We present evidence for a simple linear relationship between the orbital period and super-orbital period in ultra-luminous X-ray (ULX) pulsars, akin to what is seen in the population of disc-fed neutron star super-giant X-ray binary and Be/X-ray binary systems. We argue that the most likely cause of this relationship is the modulation of precessing hot spots or density waves in an accretion or circumstellar disc by the binary motion of the system, implying a physical link between ULX pulsars and high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) pulsars. This hypothesis is supported by recent studies of Galactic and Magellanic Cloud HMXBs accreting at super-Eddington rates, and the position of ULX pulsars on the spin period--orbital period diagram of HMXBs. An interesting secondary relationship discovered in this work is the apparent connection between disc-fed HMXBs, ULXs and a seemingly unrelated group of early-type binaries showing so-called "double-periodic" variability. We suggest that these systems are good candidates to be the direct progenitors of Be/X-ray binaries.
Since the detection of X-ray pulses from ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) in 2014, neutron stars have been considered as their central objects. However, it remains unclear how neutron stars can be brighter than the Eddington luminosity, and no unified view exists on the magnetic field of neutron stars and the degree of beaming. Recent observations suggest that some X-ray pulsating ULXs have Be-type donors, and some of them occupy the same region as Be-type high-mass X-ray binaries (Be-HMXBs) on the Corbet diagram, which reveals the relation between spin and orbital periods. This suggests tha…
Wind-fed high-mass X-ray binaries are powered by accretion of the radiatively driven wind on the compact star. Accretion-generated X-rays alter the ionization state of the wind. Because higher ionization states drive the wind less effectively, X-ray ionization may brake acceleration of the wind. This causes a decrease in the wind terminal velocity and mass flux in the direction toward the X-ray source. We study the effect of X-ray ionization on the stellar wind of B supergiants. We determine the binary parameters for which the X-ray irradiation significantly influences the stellar wind. This c…
In the local Universe, integrated X-ray emission from high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) is dominated by the brightest ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) with luminosity >10^40 erg/s. Such rare objects probably also dominated the production of X-rays in the early Universe. We demonstrate that a ULX with Lx~10^40-10^41 erg/s (isotropic-equivalent luminosity in the 0.1-10 keV energy band) shining for ~10^5 years (the expected duration of a supercritically accreting phase in HMXBs) can significantly ionise the ISM in its host dwarf galaxy of total mass M~10^7-10^8 Msun and thereby reduce its opacit…
Different accretion regimes onto magnetized NSs in HMXBs are considered: wind-fed supersonic (Bondi) regime at high accretion rates $\dot M\gtrsim 4\times 10^{16}$~[g s$^{-1}$] , subsonic settling regime at lower $\dot M$ and supercritical disc accretion during Roche lobe overflow. In wind-fed stage, NSs in HMXBs reach equilibrium spin periods $P^*$ proportional to binary orbital period $P_b$. At supercritical accretion stage, the system may appear as a pulsating ULX. Population synthesis of Galactic HMXBs using standard assumptions on the binary evolution and NS formation is presented. Compar…
Ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are off-nuclear point sources in nearby galaxies with luminosities well exceeding the Eddington limit for stellar-mass objects. It has been recognized after the discovery of pulsating ULXs (PULXs) that a fraction of these sources could be accreting neutron stars in high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) though the majority of ULXs are lacking in coherent pulsations. The earliest stage of some HMXBs may harbor rapidly rotating neutron stars propelling out the matter transferred by the massive companion. The spin-down power transferred by the neutron-star magnetosph…
High-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) are exceptional astrophysical laboratories that offer a rare glimpse into the physical processes that govern accretion on compact objects, massive-star winds, and stellar evolution. In a subset of the HMXBs, the compact objects accrete matter solely from winds of massive donor stars. These so-called wind-fed HMXBs are divided in persistent HMXBs and supergiant fast X-ray transients (SFXTs) according to their X-ray properties. While it has been suggested that this dichotomy depends on the characteristics of stellar winds, they have been poorly studied. With this…
Periodic pulsations have been found in emission from the ultra-luminous X-ray source (ULX) M82 X-2, strongly suggesting that the emitter is a rotating neutron star rather than a black hole. However, the radiation mechanisms and accretion mode involved have not yet been clearly established. In this paper, we examine the applicability to this object of standard accretion modes for high mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs). We find that spherical wind accretion, which drives OB-type HMXBs, cannot apply here but that there is a natural explanation in terms of an extension of the picture for standard Be-typ…
We introduce a method for obtaining the X-ray luminosity function (XLF) and the binary-period distribution of populations of high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) in the stellar fields (i.e. outside globular clusters) of normal galaxies. We start from standard distributions of the parameters of those primordial binaries which are the progenitors of HMXBs, and follow the transformation of these ditributions with the aid of a Jacobian formalism as the former evolve into the latter through the processes of the first mass transfer and the supernova (SN) that follows. We discuss the distributions of the…
Theoretical population number studies of binaries with at least one black hole (BH) component are obviously depending on whether or not BHs receive a (natal) kick during their formation. Several observational facts seem to indicate that indeed BHs receive a kick during their formation. In the present paper we discuss additional evidence. The progenitors of wind fed high mass X-ray binaries (HMXB) with a BH component (BH HMXB) are WR+OB binaries where the Wolf-Rayet (WR) star will finally collapse and form the BH. Starting from the observed population of WR+OB binaries in the Solar Neighborhood…
We present the first \textit{Chandra} and \textit{Swift} X-ray study of the spiral galaxy NGC\,4088 and its ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX N4088--X1). We also report very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations at 1.6 and 5 GHz performed quasi-simultaneously with the \textit{Swift} and \textit{Chandra} observations, respectively. Fifteen X-ray sources are detected by \textit{Chandra} within the D25 ellipse of NGC\,4088, from which we derive the X-ray luminosity function (XLF) of this galaxy. We find the XLF is very similar to those of star-forming galaxies and estimate a star-formati…
Neutron stars in high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) generally accrete from the wind matter of their massive companion stars. Recently Shakura et al. (2012) suggested a subsonic accretion model for low-luminosity ($<4\times 10^{36}$ ergs$^{-1}$), wind-fed X-ray pulsars. To test the feasibility of this model, we investigate the spin period distribution of wind-fed X-ray pulsars with a supergiant companion star, using a population synthesis method. We find that the modeled distribution of supergiant HMXBs in the spin period - orbital period diagram is consistent with observations provided that the …
Although ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULX) are important for astrophysics due to their extreme apparent super-Eddington luminosities, their nature is still poorly known. Theoretical and observational studies suggest that ULXs could be a diversified group of objects composed of low-mass X-ray binaries, high-mass X-ray binaries and marginally also systems containing intermediate-mass black holes, which is supported by their presence in a variety of environments. Observational data on the ULX donors could significantly boost our understanding of these systems, but only a few were detected. There…
If the ultraluminous source (ULX) M82 X-2 sustains its measured spin-up value of $\dot ν= 10^{-10}\,{\rm s^{-2}}$, it will become a millisecond pulsar in less than $10^5\,$ years. The observed (isotropic) luminosity of $10^{40}\,$ erg/s also supports the notion that the neutron star will spin up to a millisecond period upon accreting about $0.1\,{\rm M_\odot}$---the reported hard X-ray luminosity of this ULX, together with the spin-up value, implies torques consistent with the accretion disk extending down to the vicinity of the stellar surface, as expected for low values of the stellar dipole…
Features and applications of quasi-spherical settling accretion onto rotating magnetized neutron stars in high-mass X-ray binaries are discussed. The settling accretion occurs in wind-fed HMXBs when the plasma cooling time is longer than the free-fall time from the gravitational capture radius, which can take place in low-luminosity HMXBs with $L_x\lesssim 4\times 10^{36}$ erg/s. We briefly review the implications of the settling accretion, focusing on the SFXT phenomenon, which can be related to instability of the quasi-spherical convective shell above the neutron star magnetosphere due to ma…
We use the evolutionary population synthesis method to investigate the statistical properties of the wind-fed neutron star (NS) compact ($P_{\rm orb}<10$ days) high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) in our Galaxy, based on different spin-down models. We find that the spin-down rate in the supersonic propeller phase given \textbf{by assuming that the surrounding material is treated as forming a quasi-static atmosphere} or \textbf{by assuming that the characteristic velocity of matter and the typical Alfv$\acute{e}$n velocity of material in the magnetospheric boundary layer are comparable to the sound…
We have examined resolved stellar photometry from HST imaging surrounding 18 high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) candidates in NGC 300 and NGC 2403 as determined from combined Chandra/HST analysis. We have fit the color-magnitude distribution of the surrounding stars with stellar evolution models. All but one region in NGC 300 and two in NGC 2403 contain a population with an age between 20 and 70 Myr. One of the candidates is the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) in NGC 2403, which we associate with a 60 Myr old population. These age distributions provide additional evidence that 16 of these 18 candi…
The observed X-ray pulse period of OB-type high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) pulsars are typically longer than 100 seconds. It is considered that the interaction between the strong magnetic field of neutron star and the wind matter could cause such a long pulse period. In this study, we follow the spin evolution of NS, taking into account the interaction between the magnetic field and wind matter. In this line, as new challenges, we solve the evolution of the magnetic field of the neutron star at the same time, and additionally we focus on the effects of wind properties of the donor. As the result…
Recent X-ray observations have revealed the complexity and diversity of high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs). This diversity challenges a classical understanding of the accretion process onto the compact objects. In this study, we reinforce the conventional concept of the nature of wind-fed accretion onto a neutron star considering the geometrical effect of radiatively accelerated wind, and re-evaluate the transported angular momentum by using a simple wind model. Our results suggest that even in an OB-type HMXB fed by stellar wind, a large amount of angular momentum could be transported to form a…
We investigate systematically whether accreting black hole systems are likely to reach global alignment of the black hole spin and its accretion disc with the binary plane. In low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) there is only a modest tendency to reach such global alignment, and it is difficult to achieve fully: except for special initial conditions we expect misalignment of the spin and orbital planes by ~1 radian for most of the LMXB lifetime. The same is expected in high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs). A fairly close approach to global alignment is likely in most stellar-mass ultraluminous X-ray b…
We take advantage of more than 10 years of monitoring of the eclipsing HMXB systems LMC X-4, Cen X-3, 4U 1700-377, 4U 1538-522, SMC X-1, IGR J18027-2016, Vela X-1, IGR J17252-3616, XTE J1855-026, and OAO 1657-415 with the ASM on-board RXTE and ISGRI on-board INTEGRAL to update their ephemeris. These results are used to refine previous measurements of the orbital period decay of all sources (where available) and provide the first accurate values of the apsidal advance in Vela X-1 and 4U 1538-522. Updated values for the masses of the neutron stars hosted in the ten HMXBs are also provided, as we…
IGR J16493-4348 is a supergiant high mass X-ray binary discovered by INTEGRAL in 2004. The source is detected at a significance level of $\sim21$ standard deviations in the Swift-BAT survey data collected during the first 54 months of the Swift mission. The timing analysis reveals an orbital period of $\sim$6.78 days and the presence of a full eclipse of the compact ob\ ject. The dynamical range (variability up to a factor $\sim$20) observed during the BAT monitoring suggests that IGR J16493-4348 is a wind-fed system. The derived semi-major axis of the binary system is $\sim55 R_{\sun}$ with a…
It has been proposed multiple times to use the neutron star (NS) in high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) as an orbiting X-ray probe embedded in the wind-fed of its supergiant (SG) companion in order to constrain the stellar line-driven wind from the SG. We demonstrate how to combine various observables of HMXBs from the X-ray accretion luminosity produced by the wind-fed NS, in order to estimate and constrain the age of the donors. This would help us to study the stellar evolution track for each donor model. Since the evolution of massive stars is essentially determined by mass loss, and direct me…
Using an updated population synthesis code initially developed by Hurley et al. we modeled the synthetic X-ray binary (XRB) populations for direct comparison with the universal, featureless X-ray luminosity function (XLF) of high mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) in star-forming galaxies. Our main goal is to use the universal XLF to constrain the model parameters, given the current knowledge of binary evolution. We find that the one-dimensional (1D) Maxwellian velocity dispersion of the natal kick can be constrained to be of the order of ~150km/s, supporting earlier findings that neutron stars (NSs)…
Using recent compilations of detailed X-ray observations and spectral models of exceptional quality, we record the electron cyclotron resonance absorption (ECRA) features that have been detected in 45 pulsating high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) and ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) sources harboring neutron stars, although seven of these detections are still questionable and another 21 are single and/or not independently confirmed. From the comprehensive catalogs of Jaisawal \& Naik and Staubert et al. and from several additional recent observations, we produce two lists of HMXB ECRA sources: a list of…
We present results from a 90 ks Chandra ACIS-S observation of the X-ray luminous interacting galaxy system Arp 299 (NGC 3690/IC 694). We detect 25 discrete X-ray sources with luminosities above 4.0x10^38 erg s^-1 covering the entire Ultra Luminous X-ray source (ULX) regime. Based on the hard X-ray spectra of the non-nuclear discrete sources identified in Arp 299, and their association with young, actively star-forming region of Arp 299 we identify them as HMXBs. We find in total 20 off-nuclear sources with luminosities above the ULX limit, 14 of which are point-like sources. Furthermore we obs…
The recent detection of pulsations from the ultra luminous X-ray source (ULX) NuSTAR J095551+6940.8 in M82 by Bachetti et al. indicates that the object is an accreting neutron star in a high mass X-ray binary (HMXB) system. The super-Eddington luminosity of the object implies that the magnetic field is sufficiently strong to suppress the scattering cross-section unless its beam is viewed at a favourable angle. We show that the torque equilibrium condition for the pulsar indicates the dipole magnetic field of the neutron star is $6.7 \times 10^{13}$ G, two orders of magnitude higher than that e…
We present results of the study of persistent high mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) in the Milky Way, obtained from the deep INTEGRAL Galactic plane survey. This survey provides us a new insight into the population of high mass X-ray binaries because almost half of the whole sample consists of sources discovered with INTEGRAL. It is demonstrated for the first time that the majority of persistent HMXBs have supergiant companions and their luminosity function steepens somewhere around ~2x10^{36} erg/s. We show that the spatial density distribution of HMXBs correlates well with the star formation rate…

A new class of high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) --- supergiant fast X-ray transients (SFXTs) --- are discovered by INTEGRAL, which are associated with OB supergiants and present long spin periods. Observational evidence indicates that some accreting neutron stars in HMXBs display accretion reversals. It has been suggested that the inverted torque can lead to a very slow rotator. According to three characteristic radii in wind-fed accretion, we developed a retrograde accretion scenario and divided the accretion phase into three regimes, to interpret the formation of the long spin period of SFXT…
We investigated for a possible connection between the types of X-ray binaries (XRBs) and the properties of compact star clusters in the nearby galaxy NGC 628. Using {\it Chandra} archival data covering the years 2001-2018, 75 X-ray sources were detected within the field of view of observations. A total of 69 XRBs, one of which is an ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX), were found to be in the luminosity range of 3$\times10^{36}\leq L_{X}$ $\leq $ 2$\times10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$. We identified the optical counterpart(s) of 15 of the 42 XRBs that coincide with the {\it HST} field of view via improved…
We report on the discovery of mHz quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) from the high mass X-ray binary (HMXB) IGRJ19140+0951, during a 40 ks XMM-Newton observation performed in 201 5, which caught the source in its faintest state ever observed. At the start of the observation, IGRJ19140+0951 was at a low flux of 2$\times$10$^{-12}$~erg~cm$^{-2}$~s$^{-1}$ ( 2-10 keV; L$_{\rm X}$=3$\times$10$^{33}$~erg~s$^{-1}$ at 3.6 kpc), then its emission rised reaching a flux 10 times higher, in a flare-like activity. The investigation of the pow er spectrum reveals the presence of QPOs, detected only in the s…
In this proof-of-concept study we demonstrate that in a binary system mass can be transferred toward an accreting compact object at extremely high rate. If the transferred mass is efficiently converted to X-ray luminosity (with disregard of the classical Eddington limit) or if the X-rays are focused into a narrow beam then binaries can form extreme ULX sources with the X-ray luminosity of Lx>10^42 erg/s. For example, Lasota & King argued that the brightest known ULX (HLX-1) is a regular binary system with a rather low-mass compact object (a stellar-origin black hole or a neutron star). The pre…
Classical Supergiant X-ray Binaries (SGXBs) and Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients (SFXTs) are two types of High-mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) that present similar donors but, at the same time, show very different behavior in the X-rays. The reason for this dichotomy of wind-fed HMXBs is still a matter of debate. Among the several explanations that have been proposed, some of them invoke specific stellar wind properties of the donor stars. Only dedicated empiric analysis of the donors' stellar wind can provide the required information to accomplish an adequate test of these theories. However, such…
We investigated the time-variability and spectral properties of the eclipsing X-ray source Circinus Galaxy X-1 (GG X-1), using Chandra, XMM-Newton and ROSAT. We phase-connected the lightcurves observed over 20 years, and obtained a best-fitting period $P = (25,970.0 \pm 0.1)$ s $\approx$7.2 hr, and a period derivative $\dot{P}/P = ( 10.2\pm4.6) \times 10^{-7}$ yr$^{-1}$. The X-ray lightcurve shows asymmetric eclipses, with sharp ingresses and slow, irregular egresses. The eclipse profile and duration vary substantially from cycle to cycle. We show that the X-ray spectra are consistent with a p…
We present a systematic study of the X-ray binaries (XRBs) containing a black hole (BH) and a non-degenerate companion, in which mass transfer takes place via either capturing the companion's wind or Roche lobe overflow (RLO). As shown in our previous work that focusing on the formation and evolution of detached BH binaries, our assumed models relevant to BH's progenitors predicted significantly different binary properties \citep{sl19}. In this paper, we further follow the evolutionary paths of the BH systems that appearing as XRBs. By use of both binary population synthesis and detailed binar…
We study the evolution of newborn neutron stars in high-mass X-ray binaries interacting with a wind-fed super-Eddington disk. The inner disk is regularized to a radiation-dominated quasi-spherical configuration for which we calculate the inner radius of the disk, the total luminosity of the system and the torque acting on the neutron star accordingly, following the evolution of the system through the ejector and early propeller stages. We find that the systems with $B \gtrsim 10^{13}$ G pass through a short ($\sim 20\,{\rm yr}$) ejector stage appearing as supernova impostors followed by a prop…

X-ray luminosity function of high-mass X-ray binaries: Studying the signatures of different physical processes using detailed binary evolution calculations
The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) is well known to harbor a large number of High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs). The identification of their optical counterparts provides information on the nature of the donor stars and can help to constrain the parameters of these systems and their evolution. We obtained optical spectra for a number of HMXBs identified in previous Chandra and XMM-Newton surveys of the SMC using the AAOmega/2dF fiber-fed spectrograph at the Anglo-Australian Telescope. We find 5 new Be/X-ray binaries (BeXRBs; including a tentative one), by identifying the spectral type of their opt…
We explore the long-term evolution of the spin period of the High Mass X-ray Binary (HMXB) pulsar Vela X-1 over a period of 46 yr. Our analysis indicates nearly periodic variations in the spin period of the pulsar on time-scales of about 5.9 yr. There is suggestion of an overall spin-down behaviour of the pulsar though it is noticed that the source appears to stay near its equilibrium period 283.4 s since MJD 51000, with rather erratic spin-up/spin-down episodes around this value. Our study suggests nearly cyclic turnover in the spin behaviour of the pulsar from spin-up to spin-down regimes on…
We analyze several outbursts of a few transient sources using Proportional Counter Array (PCA) data (2.5-25 keV) as well as All Sky Monitor (ASM) data (1.5-12 keV) of Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) satellite. We find a time delay between the arrival times of the Keplerian disc component and the halo of the Two-Component Advective Flow (TCAF) when the spectral data is fitted with TCAF solution. We compare this time delay from the spectral fits with the TCAF solution of the transient low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) e.g., GX 339-4, H 1743-322 and MAXI J1836-194 with that of the high mass X-ra…

We report a detailed modelling of soft X-ray emission lines from two stellar-wind fed Galactic high mass X-ray binary (HMXB) systems, Cyg X-3 and 4U 1538-522, and estimate physical parameters, e.g., hydrogen density, radiation field, chemical abundances, wind velocity, etc. The spectral synthesis code CLOUDY is utilized for this modelling. We model highly ionised X-ray spectral lines such as Fe XXV (6.700 keV), Fe XXVI (6.966 keV), and reproduce the observed line flux values. We find that for Cyg X--3 and 4U 1538-522, the inner radius of the ionised gas is at a distance of 10$^{12.25}$ cm and …
