Excitation of the anomalously low lying nuclear isomer $^{229m}$Th$(3/2^+, 8.28 \pm 0.17$ eV) in the process of inelastic electron scattering is studied theoretically in the framework of the perturbation theory for the quantum electrodynamics. The calculated cross sections of $^{229m}$Th by the extremely low energy electrons in the range 9 eV--12 eV for the Th atom and Th$^{1+,4+}$ ions lie in the range $10^{-25}$--$10^{-26}$ cm$^2$. Being so large, the cross section opens up new possibilities for the effective non-resonant excitation of $^{229m}$Th in experiments with an electron beam or electron (electric) current. This can be crucial, since the energy of the isomeric state is currently known with an accuracy insufficient for the resonant excitation by photons. In addition, the cross section of the time reversed process is also large, and as a consequence, the probability of the non-radiative $^{229m}$Th decay via the conduction electrons in metal is $\approx10^{6}$ s$^{-1}$, that is, close to the internal conversion probability in the Th atom.
Nuclear excitation cross section of $^{229}$Th from the ground state to the low-lying isomeric state via inelastic electron scattering is calculated, on the level of Dirac distorted wave Born approximation. With electron energies below 100 eV, inelastic scattering is very efficient in the isomeric excitation, yielding excitation cross sections on the order of 10$^{-27}$ to 10$^{-26}$ cm$^2$. Systematic analyses are presented on elements affecting the excitation cross section, including the ion-core potential, the relativistic effect, the knowledge of the reduced nuclear transition probabilitie…
The microscopic coupled-channel calculation of inelastic proton scattering is performed for the study of neutron excitations in $2^+_1$ states of $^{18}$O, $^{10}$Be, $^{12}$Be, and $^{16}$C. Proton-nucleus potentials in the coupled-channel calculation are microscopically derived by folding the Melbourne $g$-matrix $NN$ interaction with matter and transition densities of target nuclei obtained by the structure model calculation of antisymmetrized molecular dynamics. The calculated result reasonably reproduces the elastic and inelastic proton scattering cross sections, and supports the dominant…
We summarize the discussion on the possibilities of doing inclusive and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering experiments at CEBAF with beam energy of the order of 10 GeV.
The effect of inelastic excitation of exotic light projectiles (proton- as well as neutron-rich) $^{17}$F and $^{11}$Be on fusion with heavy target has been studied at near-barrier energies. The calculations have been performed in the coupled channels approach where, in addition to the normal coupling of the ground state of the projectile to the continuum, inelastic excitation of the projectile to the bound excited state and its coupling to the continuum have also been taken into consideration. The inclusion of these additional couplings has been found to have significant effect on the fusion …
We study the influence of the strong nuclear vector potential, treated using the mean-field approximation, in deep inelastic scattering. A consistent treatment of the electromagnetic current operator, combined with the use of the operator product expansion is presented and discussed.
Four-body distorted wave theory appropriate for nucleon-nucleus reactions leading to 3-body continuum excitations of two-neutron Borromean halo nuclei is developed. The peculiarities of the halo bound state and 3-body continuum are fully taken into account by using the method of hyperspherical harmonics. The procedure is applied for A=6 test-bench nuclei; thus we report detailed studies of inclusive cross sections for inelastic $^6$He(p,p')$^6$He$^*$ and charge-exchange $^6$Li(n,p)$^6$He$^*$ reactions at nucleon energy 50 MeV. The theoretical low-energy spectra exhibit two resonance-like struc…
In this paper we reconcile two contradictory statements about deep inelastic scattering (DIS) in manifestly covariant theories: (i) the scattering must be gauge invariant, even in the deep inelastic limit, and (ii) the pole term (which is not gauge invariant in a covariant theory) dominates the scattering amplitude in the deep inelastic limit. An ``intermediate'' answer is found to be true. We show that, at all energies, the gauge dependent part of the pole term cancels the gauge dependent part of the rescattering term, so that both the pole and rescattering terms can be separately redefined i…
Compton scattering data are sensitive to the existence of low-mass resonances reported by Tatischeff et al. We show that such states, with their reported properties, are excluded by previous Compton scattering experiments.
For the first time an analytic expression was obtained for the inelastic neutron scattering law with an isotropic neutron source within the gas model, considering moderating medium temperature as a parameter. The inelastic scattering law is obtained, based on the solution of the kinematic problem of neutron inelastic scattering on a nucleus in laboratory coordinate system (L-system) in general case. I.e. in case not only a neutron but also a nucleus have arbitrary velocity vector in L-system. Analytic expressions are found for the neutron flux density and moderation spectrum in reactor fissile…
The role of relativistic off-mass-shell kinematics in the deep inelastic scattering on deuteron is analyzed. It is shown that the relativistic impulse approximation reproduces effects from the binding, Fermi motion, and two-nucleon contribution. The nonrelativistic limit of the deuteron structure function is in agreement with the nonrelativistic calculations.
The Airy structure of the nuclear rainbow and prerainbow in inelastic and elastic $α+^{16}$O scattering is studied with the coupled channel method using a folding potential derived from the microscopic wave functions of $^{16}$O. The theoretical calculations reproduce the characteristic energy evolution of the Airy minimum of the experimental angular distributions. The energy levels with $α$-cluster structure in $^{20}$Ne are reproduced well using the potentials determined from the analysis of scattering. It is shown that the emergence of the $K=0_3^+$ $α$-cluster band with core excitation at …
The robust (spin and isospin zero) $α$-particle remains one of the best projectiles to probe the nuclear isoscalar excitations. In the present work, a microscopic folding model analysis of the \ac inelastic scattering to the 2$^+$ (4.44 MeV), 0$^+$ (7.65 MeV), 3$^-$ (9.64 MeV), 0$^+$ (10.3 MeV) and 1$^-$ (10.84 MeV) states in $^{12}$C has been performed using the 3-$α$ resonating group method wave functions. The isoscalar transition strengths of these states were carefully studied based on the coupled-channel analysis using the microscopic folded form factors. A correlation between the weak bi…
The nuclear rainbow observed in the elastic $α$-nucleus and light heavy-ion scattering is proven to be due to the refraction of the scattering wave by a deep, attractive real optical potential. The nuclear rainbow pattern, established as a broad oscillation of the Airy minima in the elastic cross section, originates from an interference of the refracted far-side scattering amplitudes. It is natural to expect a similar rainbow pattern also in the inelastic scattering of a nucleus-nucleus system that exhibits a pronounced rainbow pattern in the elastic channel. Although some feature of the nucle…
The proton structure function is re-deduced from the data of deep inelastic electron-proton scattering after enhanced correction that is made due to the multiple scattering effect. The Glauber approach is used to account for the multiple scattering of electron with the quark constituents of the proton. The results are compared with the prediction of the parton model. Appreciable deviation is observed only at low values of the Bjorken scaling, which correspond to the extremely deep inelastic scattering.
Based on the Isospin-dependent Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (IBUU) transport model, the in-medium nucleon-nucleon inelastic scattering ( which is dominated by pion production at low and intermediate energies) is explored. It is found that the in-medium modification of nucleon-nucleon inelastic scatterings appears to reduce the neutron to proton ratio n/p at higher kinetic energies. Although the in-medium modification of nucleon-nucleon inelastic scatterings, as expected, affects the value of $π^-/π^+$ ratio, considering a series of undetermined properties of delta resonance and $π$ in medium, t…
We calculate the multiple scattering effect on single hadron production in semi-inclusive lepton-nucleus deeply inelastic scattering. We show that the quantum interference of multiple scattering amplitudes leads to suppression in hadron productions. At the leading power in medium length, the suppression can be approximately expressed in terms of a shift in $z$ of the fragmentation function $D(z)$, and could be therefore interpreted as the collisional energy loss. We compare our calculation with existing experimental data. We also discuss the effect of quark mass on the suppression. Our approac…
We review recent developments in the study of deep inelastic scattering from light nuclei, focusing in particular on deuterium, helium, and lithium. Understanding the nuclear effects in these systems is essential for the extraction of information on the neutron structure function.
Highly inelastic electron scattering is analyzed within the context of the unified relativistic approach previously considered in the case of quasielastic kinematics. Inelastic relativistic Fermi gas modeling that includes the complete inelastic spectrum - resonant, non-resonant and Deep Inelastic Scattering - is elaborated and compared with experimental data. A phenomenological extension of the model based on direct fits to data is also introduced. Within both models, cross sections and response functions are evaluated and binding energy effects are analyzed. Finally, an investigation of the …
We present a time-dependent quantum algorithm for nuclear inelastic scattering in the time-dependent basis function on qubits approach. This algorithm aims to quantum simulate a subset of the nuclear inelastic scattering problems that are of physical interest, in which the internal degrees of freedom of the reaction system are excited by time-dependent external interactions. We expect that our algorithm will enable an exponential speedup in simulating the dynamics of the subset of the inelastic scattering problems, which would also be advantageous for the applications to more complicated scatt…
We consider deep inelastic scattering (DIS) on a nucleus described using a density expansion. In leading order, the scattering is dominated by the incoherent scattering on individual nucleons distributed using the Thomas-Fermi approximation. We use the holographic structure functions for DIS scattering on single nucleons to make a non-perturbative estimate of the nuclear structure function in leading order in the density. Our results are compared to the data in the large-x regime.
