We systematically calculate the structure, formation enthalpy, formation free energy, elastic constants and electronic structure of Ti$_{0.98}$X$_{0.02}$ system by density functional theory (DFT) simulations to explore the effect of transition metal X (X=Ag, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Nb, Ni, Pd, Rh, Ru, Tc, and Zn) on the stability mechanism of $β$-titanium. Based on our calculations, the results of formation enthalpy and free energy show that adding trace X is beneficial to the thermodynamic stability of $β$-titanium. This behavior is well explained by the density of state (DOS). However, the tetragonal shear moduli of Ti$_{0.98}$X$_{0.02}$ systems are negative, indicating that $β$-titanium doping with a low concentration of X is still elastically unstable at 0 K. Therefore, we theoretically explain that $β$-titanium doping with trace transition metal X is unstable in the ground state.
This study reports on the properties of nitrogen doped titanium dioxide $TiO_2$ thin films considering the application as transparent conducting oxide (TCO). Sets of thin films were prepared by sputtering a titanium target under oxygen atmosphere on a quartz substrate at 400 or 500°C. Films were then doped at the same temperature by 150 eV nitrogen ions. The films were prepared in Anatase phase which was maintained after doping. Up to 30at% nitrogen concentration was obtained at the surface, as determined by in situ x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Such high nitrogen concentration at th…
Titanium-based oxides are abundant, chemically stable, non-toxic, and highly versatile materials, with applications ranging from photovoltaics to catalysis. For rutile and anatase phases of Titanium dioxide (TiO2), the bandgap ranges from 3.0-3.2 eV, which are too large to absorb in the visible range (400 nm - 700 nm), resulting in poor photo-catalytic efficiency. Nitrogen doping into TiO2 has been able to narrow its bandgap, forming an absorption tail in the visible-light region. However, TiO2 has limits to which it can be doped, suggesting investigations of the oxygen-deficient Ti203. Using …
Self-doping effect and possible antiferromagnetism at titanium-layers in the iron-based superconductor Ba$_2$Ti$_2$Fe$_2$As$_4$O
Empowering conventional materials with unexpected magnetoelectric properties is appealing to the multi-functionalization of existing devices and the exploration of future electronics. Recently, owing to its unique effect in modulating a matter's properties, ultra-small dopants, e.g. H, D, and Li, attract enormous attention in creating emergent functionalities, such as superconductivity, and metal-insulator transition. Here, we report an observation of bipolar conduction accompanied by a giant positive magnetoresistance in D-doped metallic Ti oxide (TiOxDy) films. To overcome the challenges in …
Copper dopants are varyingly reported to enhance photocatalytic activity at titanium dioxide surfaces through uncertain mechanisms. In order to interpret how copper doping might alter the performance of titanium dioxide photocatalysts in aqueous media we applied density functional theory methods to simulate surface units of doped anatase (101) planes. By including van der Waals interactions, we consider the energetics of adsorbed water at anatase surfaces in pristine and copper doped systems. Simulation results indicate that copper dopant at anatase (101) surfaces is most stable in a 2+ oxidat…
Effect of severe plastic deformation realized by rotary swaging on the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of near-a-titanium alloy Ti-2.5Al-2.6Zr
The corrosion potential of commercially pure titanium in NaCl solutions is dramatically affected by trace Fe additions, which cause the appearance of submicron pockets of \b{eta} phase at grain boundary triple points. Furthermore, the low solubility of hydrogen in hexagonal close-packed α-Ti makes titanium alloys prone to subsequent hydride-associated failures due to stress corrosion cracking. We analyzed α-α and α-\b{eta} sections of the abutting grain boundary of a \b{eta} pocket in a Grade 2 CP-Ti, and the α-\b{eta} phase boundary. Fe and H partition to \b{eta} and segregate at the grain bo…
Substrate engineering provides an opportunity to modulate the physical properties of quantum materials in thin film form. Here we report that TiSe$_2$ thin films grown on TiO$_2$ have unexpectedly large electron doping that suppresses the charge density wave (CDW) order. This is dramatically different from either bulk single crystal TiSe$_2$ or TiSe$_2$ thin films on graphene. The epitaxial TiSe$_2$ thin films can be prepared on TiO$_2$ via molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) in two ways: by conventional co-deposition using selenium and titanium sources, and by evaporating only selenium on reconstruc…
Two-dimensional (2D) Janus transitional metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have great potential for photocatalytic water splitting due to their novel properties induced by the unique out-of-plane asymmetric structures. Here, we systematically investigate the geometric, electronic and optical properties of 2D Janus MoSSe with titanium doping and vacancies to explore their synergistic effects on photocatalytic activity. We find that there are effective attractions between the substituted or adsorbed Ti atoms and S/Se vacancies. The Ti adatoms dramatically extend the light absorption range to infrared…
We synthesized the pure and co-doped titanium dioxide (TiO$_2$) electrodes via spin coating. We examined the optical and electronic properties of as-prepared thin film electrodes with co-doping of transition metals and non-metals. The co-doping of Cu, Zn, and N increase the absorption of the radiation in the visible region. The doping leads to the formation of defect states in the electrodes. In this article, we have studied the carrier kinetics in pristine and co-doped TiO2 electrodes. To study the role of dopants in carrier transport of the synthesized TiO2 based electrodes, the electrochemi…
This paper presents the standardization of Proton Induced X-rays Emission (PIXE) technique for the trace element analysis of thick standard samples. Three standard reference materials (SRMs) viz-à-vis titanium, copper and iron base alloys were used for the study due to their availability. The protons beam was accelerated up to 2.57 MeV energy by 5UDH-II tandem Pelletron accelerator and samples were irradiated at different geometry and durations. Spectrum was acquired using a multi-channel spectrum analyzer while spectrum analysis was done using a GUPIXWIN model for determination of elemental c…
The incorporation of impurities during the chemical synthesis of nanomaterials is usually uncontrolled and rarely reported because of the formidable challenge that constitutes measuring trace amounts of often light elements with sub nanometre spatial resolution. Yet these foreign elements influence functional properties, by e.g. doping. Here we demonstrate how the synthesis and partial reduction reaction on hollow TiO2 nanowires leads to the introduction of parts-per-millions of boron, sodium, and nitrogen from the reduction reaction with sodium borohydride at the surface of the TiO2 nanowire.…

Substitutionally-doped 2D transition metal dichalcogenides are primed for next-generation device applications such as field effect transistors (FET), sensors, and optoelectronic circuits. In this work, we demonstrate substitutional Rhenium (Re) doping of MoS2 monolayers with controllable concentrations down to 500 parts-per-million (ppm) by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). Surprisingly, we discover that even trace amounts of Re lead to a reduction in sulfur site defect density by 5-10x. Ab initio models indicate the free-energy of sulfur-vacancy formation is increased along the…
Strongly correlated materials often undergo a Mott metal-insulator transition, which is tipically first-order, as a function of control parameters like pressure. Upon doping, rich phase diagrams with competing instabilities are found. Yet, the conceptual link between the interaction-driven Mott transition and the finite-doping behavior lacks a clear connection with the theory of critical phenomena. In a prototypical case of a first-order Mott transition the surface associated with the equation of state for the homogeneous system is "folded" so that in a range of parameters stable metallic and …
Bandgap engineering has attracted increasing interest in the field of semiconductive materials with specific electrical and optical characteristics for various applications, such as solar energy harvesting, energy-related applications, and photocatalysts. Here, we propose a novel and facile method to obtain a combination of type-II structure and Ohmic contact by the fabrication of WO3/Ti-WOx/TiHyOz homo/heterojunction on a WO3 photocatalyst using ball milling. The morphology and structural characterizations of the material are obtained using UV-vis, SEM/EDS, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, and XPS. I…
Understanding the controlling principles of band gaps trends in d electron perovskites is needed both for gauging metal-insulator transitions, as well as their application in catalysis and doping. The magnitude of this band gap is rather different for different magnetic spin configurations. We find via electronic structure theory that the factors that connect gapping magnitudes to magnetism depend on the nature of the band edge orbital character (BEOC) and surprisingly scale with the number of antiferromagnetic contacts z$_i$ between neighboring transition metal ions. The dependence is weak wh…
