We used molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate the mechanical properties of cubic zinc blende (ZB) Si0.5Ge0.5 alloy nanowire (NW). Tersoff potential is employed to elucidate the effect of nanowire size, crystal orientations, and temperature on the material properties. We found that the reduction in the cross-sectional area results in lower ultimate tensile strength and Youngs modulus of this alloy which can be attributed to the increased surface to volume ratio. The [111] oriented Si0.5Ge0.5 NW exhibits the highest fracture strength compared to other crystal orientations but [110] orientation possesses the highest fracture toughness. The effect of temperature depicts an inverse relationship with the ultimate tensile strength and Youngs modulus. The increased temperature facilitates the failure of the material, thus degrades the materials strength. Our study reveals that the vacancy defects introduced via removal of either Si or Ge atoms exhibit similar behavior, and with the increase in vacancy concentration, both ultimate tensile strength and Youngs modulus reduces linearly. We further illustrate the failure characteristics of Si0.5Ge0.5 NW at two extremely low and high temperatures. The intrinsic failure characteristics of Si0.5Ge0.5 alloy is found to be insensitive to the temperature. Interestingly, at both temperatures, with the increasing strain, the cross-section of Si0.5Ge0.5 eventually resembles a neck as typically observed in ductile materials, although the NW failure is brittle in nature. Overall, this work offers a new perspective on understanding material properties and failure characteristics of ZB Si0.5Ge0.5 NW that will be a guide for designing Si-Ge based nanodevices.
We present ab initio calculations of the electronic and optical properties of hexagonal SiGe alloys in the lonsdaleite structure. Lattice constants and electronic band structures in excellent agreement with experiment are obtained using density-functional theory. Hexagonal Si has an indirect band gap, while hexagonal Ge has a pseudo-direct gap, i.e. the optical transitions at the minimum direct band gap are very weak. The pseudo-direct character of pure hexagonal Ge is efficiently lifted by alloying. Already for a small admixture of Si, symmetry reduction enhances the oscillator strength of th…
We discuss a model for the on-site matrix elements of the sp3d5s* tight-binding hamiltonian of a strained diamond or zinc-blende crystal or nanostructure. This model features on-site, off-diagonal couplings between the s, p and d orbitals, and is able to reproduce the effects of arbitrary strains on the band energies and effective masses in the full Brillouin zone. It introduces only a few additional parameters and is free from any ambiguities that might arise from the definition of the macroscopic strains as a function of the atomic positions. We apply this model to silicon, germanium and the…
Theoretical studies have shown that new physical properties such as tunable gap openings or quantum spinHall effects could be expected from group-IV graphene analogs (silicene, germanene, stanene). While therehave been numerous studies of growth of such Si, Ge, Sn monolayers, the demonstration of their hexagonalorganization has been often based on postgrowth characterization, and their analogy to graphene has remainedcontroversial. Our real-time scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) observation during Ge deposition on Ag(111)in the 380--430 K temperature range reveals that Ag atoms are involved …
Enhancement of the electronic thermoelectric properties of bulk strained silicon-germanium alloys using the scattering relaxation times from first principles
The atomic distribution in amorphous FeZr alloys is found to be close to random, nevertheless, the composition can not be viewed as being homogenous at the nm-scale. The spatial variation of the local composition is identified as the root of the unusual magnetic properties in amorphous Fe$_{1-x}$Zr$_{x}$ alloys. The findings are discussed and generalised with respect to the physical properties of amorphous and crystalline materials.
Quantifying the population of nanoscale defects that are formed in metals and alloys exposed to extreme radiation environments remains a pressing challenge in materials science. These defects both fundamentally alter material properties and seed long-timescale performance degradation, which often limits the lifespan of engineering systems. Unlike ceramic and semiconducting materials, these defects in metals and alloys are not spectroscopically active, forcing characterization to rely on indirect measurements from which the distribution of nanoscale defects may be inferred. In this mini-review,…
Nanoindentation is a powerful tool capable of providing fundamental insights of material elastic and plastic response at the nanoscale. Alloys at nanoscale are particularly interesting as the local heterogeneity and deformation mechanism revealed by atomistic study offers a better way to understand hardening mechanism to build a stronger material. In this work, nanoindentation in Al-Cu alloys are studied using atomistic simulations to investigate the effects of loading direction, alloying percentages of Cu via dislocation-driven mechanisms. Also, a low-fidelity finite element (FE) model has be…
Damage-tolerance can be an elusive characteristic of structural materials requiring both high strength and ductility, properties that are often mutually exclusive. High-entropy alloys are of interest in this regard. Specifically, the single-phase CrMnFeCoNi alloy displays tensile strength levels of ~1 GPa, excellent ductility (~60-70%) and exceptional fracture toughness (KJIc > 200 MPa/m). Here, through the use of in-situ straining in an aberration-corrected transmission electron microscope, we report on the salient atomistic to micro-scale mechanisms underlying the origin of these properties.…
The non-reversing enthalpy near Tg, DHnr, in bulk GexAsxS1-2x glasses is found to display a global minimum (~0) in the 0.11 < x < 0.15 range, the reversibility window. Furthermore, the DHnr term is found to age for glass compositions both below (x < 0.11) and above (x > 0.15) the window but not in the window. Glass compositions in the window are rigid but stress-free, those below the window are floppy, and those above the window are stressed-rigid. Raman scattering shows floppy and stressed rigid networks to consist in part of monomers. The latter aspect of structure narrows the width of the r…
Ultrafine-grained aluminum alloys offer interesting multifunctional properties with a combination of high strength, low electrical resistivity, and low density. However, due to thermally induced grain coarsening, they typically suffer from an intrinsic poor thermal stability. To overcome this drawback, an Al-2%Fe alloy has been selected because of the low solubility of Fe in Al and their highly positive enthalpy of mixing leading to the formation of stable intermetallic particles. The two-phase alloy has been processed by severe plastic deformation to achieve simultaneously submicrometer Al gr…
We report here sign reversal and tunability of exchange bias in AuFe cosputtered films of thickness about 63 nm. As deposited film exhibits exchange bias effect at room temperature without external triggering field and its magnitude increases gradually with decrease in temperature down to 5 K. Upon irradiation with 100 MeV Au9+ ions at a fluence of 5*1013 ions/cm2, hysteresis loop shifts completely from origin towards positive field side at room temperature and reverses sign when temperature is reduced to 5 K as studied by SQUID magnetometry. A well defined uniaxial magnetic anisotropy has bee…
High strength 7xxx Al-alloys are currently commonly used in aerospace and are expected to be increasingly employed in the automotive sector for weight reduction purposes. These alloys can however be sensitive to stress-corrosion cracking (SCC) depending on temper and loading conditions. Both the alloy's grain structure and composition are believed to play a key role in determining sensitivity to SCC. Here, we study at the nanometer scale the evolution of the microstructure near stress corrosion cracks on two different model variants of the 7140 aluminum alloy. We performed double cantilever be…
Germanium-Tin is emerging as a material exhibiting excellent photonic properties. Here we demonstrate optical initialization and readout of spins in this intriguing group IV semiconductor alloy and report on spin quantum beats between Zeeman-split levels under an external magnetic field. Our optical experiments reveal robust spin orientation in a wide temperature range and a persistent spin lifetime that approaches the ns regime at room temperature. Besides important insights into nonradiative recombination pathways, our findings disclose a rich spin physics in novel epitaxial structures direc…
High entropy alloys are generally considered to be single phase material. This state is, however, typically a non-equilibrium state after fabrication at high cooling rates. Phase constitution after fabrication or heat treatment is mostly known for isothermal annealing only and for casts as well as rapidly quenched alloys. Knowledge on early phase separation stages of high entropy alloys and their mechanisms are missing so far. Here, we present results on phase separation at intermediate cooling rates, by characterization of gas atomized powder of the AlCoCr0.75Cu0.5FeNi alloy. Although investi…
We present a comprehensive theory of the circularly polarized luminescence and its dependence on strain in spin-polarized Si and Ge. Symmetries of wavefunctions and interactions are used to derive concise ratios between intensities of the right and left circularly polarized luminescence for each of the dominant phonon-assisted optical transitions. These ratios are then used to explain the circular polarization degrees of the luminescence peaks in the spectra of biaxially-strained Si and Ge, and of relaxed ${\rm{Si}}_{1-x}{\rm{Ge}}_{x}$ alloys. The spectra are numerically calculated by a combin…
Germanium and silicon-germanium alloys have found entry into Si technology thanks to their compatibility with Si processing and their ability to tailor electronic properties by strain and band-gap engineering. Germanium's potential to extend Si functionalities, as exemplified by lasing action of strained-Ge on Si substrates, has brought the material back to attention. Yet despite these advances, non-radiative transitions, induced by crystal defects originating from the Ge/Si interface, continue to be a serious bottleneck. Here we demonstrate the drastic emission enhancement achieved via contro…
Nanostructured surfaces are known to provide excellent optical properties for various photonics devices. Fabrication of such nanoscale structures to germanium (Ge) surfaces by metal assisted chemical etching (MACE) is, however, challenging as Ge surface is highly reactive resulting often in micron-level rather than nanoscale structures. Here we show that by properly controlling the process, it is possible to confine the chemical reaction only to the vicinity of the metal nanoparticles and obtain nanostructures also in Ge. Furthermore, it is shown that controlling the density of the nanoparticl…
While achieving high Curie temperatures (above room temperature) in diluted magnetic semiconductors remains a challenge in the case of well controlled homogeneous alloys, several systems characterized by a strongly inhomogeneous incorporation of the magnetic component appear as promising. Incorporation of manganese into germanium drastically alters the growth conditions, and in certain conditions of low temperature Molecular Beam Epitaxy it leads to the formation of well organized nanocolumns of a Mn-rich material, with a crystalline structure in epitaxial relationship with the Mn-poor germani…
Using the density functional theory, we perform a full atomic relaxation of the bulk ferrite with 12.5%-concentration of monoatomic interstitial Cr periodically located at the edges of the bcc Fe$_α$ cell. We show that structural relaxation in such artificially engineered alloys leads to significant atomic displacements and results in the formation of novel highly stable configurations with parallel chains of octahedrically arranged Fe. The enhanced magnetic polarization in the low-symmetry metallic state of this type of alloys can be externally controlled by additional inclusion of nonmagneti…
High-spatial-resolution secondary ion mass spectrometry offers a method for mapping lithium at nanoscale lateral resolution. Practical implementation of this technique offers significant potential for revealing the distribution of Li in many materials with exceptional lateral resolution and elemental sensitivity. Here, two state-of-the-art methods are demonstrated on an aluminium-lithium alloy to visualise nanoscale Li-rich phases by mapping the 7Li+ secondary ion. NanoSIMS 50L analysis with a radio frequency O- plasma ion source enabled visualisation of needle-shaped T1 (Al2CuLi) phases as sm…
Designing and searching for a high thermal conductivity material in both bulk and nanoscale is highly demanding for electronics cooling. In this work, we studied the thermal conductivity of 2H-Germanium Carbide(2H-GeC) using first principles calculations. At 300 K, we are reporting a high thermal conductivity of 1350 Wm-1K-1 and 1050 Wm-1K-1 along a-axis and c-axis respectively for pure 2H-GeC. These values are 130% higher than the thermal conductivity of 2H-silicon carbide and 20% lower than cubic germanium carbide(c-GeC). We analyzed the phonon group velocities, phonon scattering rates and m…
An Al-11.3Li-0.11Sc (at. %) alloy was double-aged to induce first alpha'-Al3Sc and then delta'-Al3Li precipitates. Atom-probe tomography revealed both single-phase delta'-precipitates and core-shell alpha'/delta'-precipitates (with respective average radii of 16 and 27 nm, and respective volume fractions of 12 and 9%) conferring a high strength to the alloy. Although the delta'-shells contain little Sc (~0.027 at. %), the alpha'-cores have a high Li content, with an average composition of Al0.72(Sc0.17 Li0.11). The Li concentrations within the delta'-phase and the Li interfacial excess at the …
Oxide passive films are a key for the durability of metals and alloys components as well as a central issue in corrosion science and engineering. Herein, we discuss current developments of the nanometer and sub-nanometer scale knowledge of the barrier properties and adsorption properties of passive oxide films brought by recent model experimental and theoretical investigations. The discussed aspects include (i) the chromium enrichment and its homogeneity at the nanoscale in passive films formed on Cr-bearing alloys such as stainless steel, (ii) the corrosion properties of grain boundaries in e…
Engineering materials to include nanoscale porosity or other nanoscale structures has become a well-established strategy for enhancing the thermoelectric performance of dielectrics. However, the approach is only considered beneficial for materials where the intrinsic phonon mean-free path is much longer than that of the charge carriers. As such, the approach would not be expected to provide significant performance gains in polycrystalline semiconducting alloys, such as SixGe1-x, where mass disorder and grains provide strong phonon scattering. In this manuscript, we demonstrate that the additio…
In spite of remarkable developments in the field of advanced materials, silicon remains one of the foremost semiconductors of the day. Of enduring relevance to science and technology is silicon's nanomechanical behaviour including phase transformation, amorphization and dislocations generation, particularly in the context of molecular dynamics and materials research. So far, comprehensive modelling of the whole cycle of events in silicon during nanoscale deformation has not been possible, however, due to the limitations inherent in the existing interatomic potentials. This paper examines how w…
The precise knowledge of the atomic order in monocrystalline alloys is fundamental to understand and predict their physical properties. With this perspective, we utilized laser-assisted atom probe tomography to investigate the three-dimensional distribution of atoms in non-equilibrium epitaxial Sn-rich group IV SiGeSn ternary semiconductors. Different atom probe statistical analysis tools including frequency distribution analysis, partial radial distribution functions, and nearest neighbor analysis were employed in order to evaluate and compare the behavior of the three elements to their spati…
GeSn on Si has attracted much research interest due to its tunable direct bandgap for mid-infrared applications. Recently, short-range order (SRO) in GeSn alloys has been theoretically predicted, which profoundly impacts the band structure. However, characterizing SRO in GeSn is challenging. Guided by physics-informed Poisson statistical analyses of Kth-nearest neighbors (KNN) in atom probe tomography, a new approach is demonstrated here for 3D nanoscale SRO mapping and semi-quantitative strain mapping in GeSn. For GeSn with ~14 at.% Sn, the SRO parameters of Sn-Sn 1NN in 10x10x10 nm$^{3}$ nan…
The temporal evolution of ordered gamma prime (L12)-precipitates precipitating in a disordered gamma(f.c.c.) matrix is studied in extensive detail for a Ni-12.5 Al at.% alloy aged at 823 K (550 oC), for times ranging from 0.08 to 4096 h. Three-dimensional atom-probe tomography (3-D APT) results are compared to monovacancy-mediated lattice-kinetic Monte Carlo (LKMC1) simulations, which include monovacancy-solute binding energies through 4th nearest-neighbor distances, for the same mean composition and aging temperature. The temporal evolution of the measured values of the mean radius, <R(t)>, n…
We studied solid solution effects on the mechanical properties of nanocrystalline (NC) $\mathrm{Pd}_{\mathrm{100-x}} \mathrm{Au}_{\mathrm{x}}$ alloys ($0 \leq \mathrm{x} < 50 \mathrm{at.\%}$) at the low end of the nanoscale. Concentration has been used as control parameter to tune material properties (elastic moduli, Burgers vector, stacking fault energies) at basically unaltered microstructure (grain size $D\approx 10\mathrm{ nm}$). In stark contrast to coarse grained fcc alloys, we observe solid solution softening for increasing Au-content. The available predictions from models and theories …
Nanoscale L12-type ordered structures are widely used in face-centred cubic (FCC) alloys to exploit their hardening capacity and thereby improve mechanical properties. These fine-scale particles are typically fully coherent with matrix with the same atomic configuration disregarding chemical species, which makes them challenging to be characterized. Spatial distribution maps (SDMs) are used to probe local order by interrogating the three-dimensional (3D) distribution of atoms within reconstructed atom probe tomography (APT) data. However, it is almost impossible to manually analyse the complet…
Precious metal alloys enables new possibilities to tailor materials for specific optical functions. Here we present a systematic study of the effects of a nanoscale alloying on the permittivity of Au-Ag-Cu metals at 38 different atomic mixing ratios. The permittivity was measured and analyzed numerically by applying the Drude model. X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed the face centered cubic lattice of the alloys. Both, optical spectra and XRD results point towards an equivalent composition-dependent electron scattering behavior. Correlation between the fundamental structural parameters of alloys…
A detailed understanding of the relation between microscopic structure and phonon propagation at the nan oscale is essential to design materials with desired phononic and thermal properties. Here we uncover a new mechanism of phonon interaction in surface oxidized membranes, i.e., native oxide layers interact with phonons in ultra-thin silicon membranes through local resonances. The local resonances reduce the low frequency phonon group velocities and shorten their mean free path. This effect opens up a new strategy for ultralow thermal conductivity design as it complements the scattering mecha…
The Ni-based superalloy Alloy 718 is used in aircraft engines as high-pressure turbine discs and must endure challenging demands on high-temperature yield strength, creep-, and oxidation-resistance. Nanoscale $γ^{\prime}$- and $γ^{\prime \prime}$-precipitates commonly found in duplet and triplet co-precipitate morphologies provide high-temperature strength under these harsh operating conditions. Direct ageing of Alloy 718 is an attractive alternative manufacturing route known to increase the yield strength at 650 $^°$C by at least +10 $\%$, by both retaining high dislocation densities and chan…
Atom probe tomography (APT), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and nanoindentation were used to characterise the oxygen-rich layer on an in-service jet engine compressor disc, manufactured from the titanium alloy TIMETAL 834. Oxygen ingress was quantified and related to changes in mechanical properties through nanoindentation studies. The relationship between oxygen concentration, microstructure, crystal orientation and hardness has been explored through correlative hardness mapping, EPMA and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The role of microstructure on oxygen ingress has been studi…

Nanoscale inhomogeneities are typical for numerous metallic alloys and crucially important for their practical applications. At the same time, stabilization mechanisms of such a state are poorly understood. We present a general overview of the problem, together with a more detailed discussion of the prototype example, namely, Guinier-Preston zones in Al-based alloys. It is shown that coherent strain due to a misfit between inclusion and host crystal lattices plays a decisive role in the emergence of the inhomogeneous state. We suggest a model explaining formation of ultrathin plates (with the …
Layered chalcogenides including Bi2Te3, Sb2Te3, Bi-Sb-Te ternary alloys and heterostructures are known as great thermoelectric, topological insulators and recently highlighted as plasmonic building blocks beyond noble metals. Here, we conduct a joint in situ transmission electron microscopy (in situ TEM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the temperature dependent nanoscale dynamics, interfacial properties and further identifying the role of native defects and edge configurations in anisotropic sublimations of Bi2Te3-Sb2Te3 in-plane heterostructure and Sb2-xBixTe3 …
Electrical and thermal transport properties of disordered materials have long been of both theoretical interest and engineering importance. As a new class of materials with an intrinsic compositional disorder, high/medium-entropy alloys (HEAs/MEAs) are being immensely studied mainly for their excellent mechanical properties. By contrast, electrical and thermal transport properties of HEAs/MEAs are less well studied. Here we investigate these two properties of silicon (Si)-germanium (Ge)-tin (Sn) MEAs, where we keep the same content of Si and Ge while increasing the content of Sn from 0 to 1/3 …
Titanium-based shape memory alloys, such as Ti2448, have attracted enormous attention owing to their unique thermomechanical properties and potential biomedical applications. In this study, we develop a polycrystalline phase field to investigate the grain size dependence of the martensitic transformation and associated mechanical properties of nanograined Ti-Nb alloys. It is shown that a reduction of the average grain size strengthens the suppression of the martensitic transformation (MT), leading to an increase of the transformation stress, shrinkage of the stress hysteresis, and elimination …
Three novel precipitation strengthened bcc alloys which exhibit a smooth microstructural gradient with composition have been fabricated in bulk form by induction casting. All three alloys are comprised of a mixture of disordered A2-(Fe, Cr) and L2$_1$-ordered (Ni, Fe)$_{2}$AlTi type phases both as-cast and after long-term annealing at 900 $^{\circ}$C. The ratio of disordered to ordered phase, primary dendrite fraction, and overall microstructural coarseness all decrease as Cr is replaced by Al and Ti. Differences in phase composition are quantified through domain averaged principal component a…
The characteristic microstructure of Sm(Co,Fe,Cu,Zr)$_z$ alloys with SmCo$_5$ cell walls in Sm$_2$Co$_{17}$ cells, all intersected by Zr-rich platelets, makes them some of the best performing high-temperature permanent magnets. Plentiful research has been performed to tailor the microstructure at the nanoscale, but due to its complexity many questions remain unanswered about the effect of the individual phases on the magnetic performance at different temperatures. Here, we explore this mechanism effect for three different Sm(Co,Fe,Cu,Zr)$_z$ alloys by deploying high-resolution magnetic imaging…
Stimulus-responsive shape memory materials have attracted tremendous research interests recently, with much effort focused on improving their mechanical actuation. Driven by the needs of nanoelectromechnical devices, materials with large mechanical strain particularly at nanoscale are therefore desired. Here we report on the discovery of a large shape memory effect in BiFeO3 at the nanoscale. A maximum strain of up to ~14% and a large volumetric work density can be achieved in association with a martensitic-like phase transformation. With a single step, control of the phase transformation by t…
Tailoring and improving material properties by alloying is a long-known and used concept. Recent research has demonstrated the potential of ab initio calculations in understanding the material properties at the nanoscale. Here we present a systematic overview of alloying trends when early-transition metals (Y, Zr, Nb, Hf, Ta) are added in the Ti$_{1-x}$Al$_x$N system, routinely used as a protective hard coating. The alloy lattice parameters tend to be larger than the corresponding linearised Vegard's estimation, with the largest deviation more than 2.5% obtained for Y$_{0.5}$Al$_{0.5}$N. The c…
Nanostructured semiconducting alloys obtain ultra-low thermal conductivity as a result of the scattering of phonons with a wide range of mean-free-paths (MFPs). In these materials, long-MFP phonons are scattered at the nanoscale boundaries whereas short-MFP high-frequency phonons are impeded by disordered point defects introduced by alloying. While this trend has been validated by simplified analytical and numerical methods, an ab-initio space-resolved approach remains elusive. To fill this gap, we calculate the thermal conductivity reduction in porous alloys by solving the mode-resolved Boltz…
Chemically stable quantum-confined 2D metals are of interest in next-generation nanoscale quantum devices. Bottom-up design and synthesis of such metals could enable the creation of materials with tailored, on-demand, electronic and optical properties for applications that utilize tunable plasmonic coupling, optical non-linearity, epsilon-near-zero behavior, or wavelength-specific light trapping. In this work, we demonstrate that the electronic, superconducting and optical properties of air-stable two-dimensional metals can be controllably tuned by the formation of alloys. Environmentally robu…
The concept of alloying multiple principal elements at high concentrations has led to the development of High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) with exceptional mechanical properties, making them the focus of major recent scientific endeavors. Geometrically complex HEAs with tailored microstructural characteristics can be produced using additive manufacturing technologies such as powder bed fusion (PBF). However, an in-depth study on the effect of process thermal conditions during PBF is required to effectively fabricate HEAs with desirable mechanical characteristics. Thus, in our present molecular dynami…
