Cold atom experiments can now realize mixtures where different components move in different spatial dimensions. We investigate a fermion mixture where one species is constrained to move along a one-dimensional lattice embedded in a two-dimensional lattice populated by another species of fermions, and where all bare interactions are contact interactions. By focusing on the one-dimensional fermions, we map this problem onto a model of fermions with non-local interactions on a chain. The effective interaction is mediated by the two-dimensional fermions and is both attractive and retarded, the form of which can be varied by changing the density of the two-dimensional fermions. By using the functional renormalization group in the weak-coupling and adiabatic limit, we show that the one-dimensional fermions can be controlled to be in various density-wave, or spin-singlet or triplet superconducting phases.
We study a two-leg fermionic Hubbard ladder model with a state-dependent hopping. We find that, contrary to the case without a state-dependent hopping, for which the system has a superfluid nature regardless of the sign of the interaction at incommensurate filling, in the presence of such a hopping a spin-triplet superfluid, spin- density wave and charge-density wave phases emerge. We examine our results in the light of recent experiments on periodically-driven optical lattices in cold atoms. We give protocols allowing us to realize the spin-triplet superfluid elusive in the cold atoms.
Elementary particles such as the electron carry several quantum numbers, for example, charge and spin. However, in an ensemble of strongly interacting particles, the emerging degrees of freedom can fundamentally differ from those of the individual constituents. Paradigmatic examples of this phenomenon are one-dimensional systems described by independent quasiparticles carrying either spin (spinon) or charge (holon). Here we report on the dynamical deconfinement of spin and charge excitations in real space following the removal of a particle in Fermi-Hubbard chains of ultracold atoms. Using spa…
We study a system with competing short- and global-range interactions in the framework of the Bose-Hubbard model. Using a mean-field approximation we obtain the phase diagram of the system and observe four different phases: a superfluid, a supersolid, a Mott insulator and a charge density wave, where the transitions between the various phases can be either of first or second order. We qualitatively support these results using Monte-Carlo simulations. An analysis of the low-energy excitations shows that the second-order phase transition from the charge density wave to the supersolid is associat…
We investigate long-range pairing interactions between ultracold fermionic atoms confined in an optical lattice which are mediated by the coupling to a cavity. In the absence of other perturbations, we find three degenerate pairing symmetries for a two-dimensional square lattice. By tuning a weak local atomic interaction via a Feshbach resonance or by tuning a weak magnetic field, the superfluid system can be driven from a topologically trivial s-wave to topologically ordered, chiral superfluids containing Majorana edge states. Our work points out a novel path towards the creation of exotic su…
We study fermionic superfluidity in strongly anisotropic optical lattices with attractive interactions utilizing the cluster DMFT method, and focusing in particular on the role of non-local quantum fluctuations. We show that non-local quantum fluctuations impact the BCS superfluid transition dramatically. Moreover, we show that exotic superfluid states with delicate order parameter structure, such as the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase driven by spin population imbalance, can emerge even in the presence of such strong fluctuations.
In the present article, we discuss the role played by the interaction in the Anderson localization problem, for a system of interacting fermions in a one-dimensional disordered lattice, described by the Fermi Hubbard Hamiltonian, in presence of an on-site random potential. We show that, given the proper identification of the elementary excitations of the system described in terms of doublons and unpaired particles, the Anderson localization picture survives. Ensuing a "global quench", we show that the system exhibits a rich localization scenario, which can be ascribed to the nearly-free dynami…
We study strongly correlated Hubbard systems extended to symmetric $N$-component fermions. We focus on the intermediate-temperature regime between magnetic superexchange and interaction energy, which is relevant to current ultracold fermionic atom experiments. The $N$-component fermions are represented by slave particles, and, by using a diagrammatic technique based on the atomic limit, spectral functions are analytically obtained as a function of temperature, filling factor and the component number $N$. We also apply this analytical technique to the calculation of lattice modulation experimen…
Recently, it has been shown that the momentum distribution of a metallic state of fermionic atoms in a lattice Fermi-Bose mixture exhibits coherent oscillations after a global quench that suppresses tunneling. The oscillation period is determined by the Fermi-Bose interaction strength. Here we show that similar dynamics occurs in the fermionic Hubbard model when we quench a noninteracting metallic state by introducing a Hubbard interaction and suppressing tunneling. The period is determined primarily by the interaction strength. Conversely, we show that one can accurately determine the Hubbard…
A Thouless pump transports an integer amount of charge when pumping adiabatically around a singularity. We study the splitting of such a critical point into two separate critical points by adding a Hubbard interaction. Furthermore, we consider extensions to a spinful Rice-Mele model, namely a staggered magnetic field or an Ising-type spin coupling, further reducing the spin symmetry. The resulting models additionally allow for the transport of a single charge in a two-component system of spinful fermions, whereas in the absence of interactions, zero or two charges are pumped. In the SU(2)-symm…
Transport properties are among the defining characteristics of many important phases in condensed matter physics. In the presence of strong correlations they are difficult to predict even for model systems like the Hubbard model. In real materials they are in general obscured by additional complications including impurities, lattice defects or multi-band effects. Ultracold atoms in contrast offer the possibility to study transport and out-of-equilibrium phenomena in a clean and well-controlled environment and can therefore act as a quantum simulator for condensed matter systems. Here we studie…

In a recent work, Murmann {\it et. al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf114}, 080402 (2015)] have experimentally prepared and manipulated a double-well optical potential containing a pair of Fermi atoms as a possible building block of Hubbard model. Here, we carry out a detailed theoretical study on the properties of both fermionic and bosonic two-site Hubbard models with a pair of interacting atoms in a trap with a double-well structure along z-axis and a 2D harmonic confinement along the transverse directions. We consider fermions as of two-component type and bosons as of spinless as well as of two sp…
The Fermi-Hubbard model is a key concept in condensed matter physics and provides crucial insights into electronic and magnetic properties of materials. Yet, the intricate nature of Fermi systems poses a barrier to answer important questions concerning d-wave superconductivity and quantum magnetism. Recently, it has become possible to experimentally realize the Fermi-Hubbard model using a fermionic quantum gas loaded into an optical lattice. In this atomic approach to the Fermi-Hubbard model the Hamiltonian is a direct result of the optical lattice potential created by interfering laser fields…
We propose a novel possibility of dynamically changing the pairing of superconductors from $s$ wave to $η$ pairing (where the pairs condense at the Brillouin-zone corner momenta) by driving the system with ac fields. We consider a periodically-driven attractive Hubbard model in the strong-coupling regime, and show that the pair-hopping and pair-repulsion terms in the effective Hamiltonian in the Floquet formalism are drastically renormalized in different manners between the two terms, which can change the ground states from an $s$-wave superconductivity to an $η$-pairing superconductivity or a…
We study the Renyi entropy in the finite temperature crossover regime of a Hubbard chain using quantum Monte Carlo. The ground state entropy has characteristic features such as a logarithmic divergence with block size and $2\kF$ oscillations that are a hallmark of its Luttinger liquid nature. The interplay between the (extensive) thermal entropy and the ground state features is studied and we analyze the temperature induced decay of the amplitude of the oscillations as well as the scaling of the purity. Furthermore, we show how the spin and charge velocities can be extracted from the temperatu…
We scrutinize the real-frequency structure of the self-energy in the superconducting state of the attractive Hubbard model within the dynamical mean-field theory. Within the strong-coupling superconducting phase which has been understood in terms of the Bose-Einstein condensation in the literature, we find two qualitatively different regions crossing over each other. In one region close to zero temperature, the self-energy depends on the frequency only weakly at low energy. On the other hand, in the region close to the critical temperature, the self-energy shows a pole structure. The latter re…
We study the out of equilibrium dynamics of the Fermionic Hubbard Model induced by a linear ramp of the repulsive interaction $U$ from the metallic state through the Mott transition. To this extent we use a time dependent Gutzwiller variational method and complement this analysis with the inclusion of quantum fluctuations at the leading order, in the framework of a $Z_2$ slave spin theory. We discuss the dynamics during the ramp and the issue of adiabaticity through the scaling of the excitation energy with the ramp duration $τ$. In addition, we study the dynamics for times scales longer than …
We study the dynamics of magnetic correlations in the half-filled fermionic Hubbard model following a fast ramp of the repulsive interaction. We use Schwinger-Keldysh self-consistent second-order perturbation theory to investigate the evolution of single-particle Green's functions and solve the non-equilibrium Bethe-Salpeter equation to study the dynamics of magnetic correlations. This approach gives us new insights into the interplay between single-particle relaxation dynamics and the growth of antiferromagnetic correlations. Depending on the ramping time and the final value of the interactio…
We study two identical fermions, or two hard-core bosons, in an infinite chain and coupled to phonons by interactions that modulate their hopping as described by the Peierls/Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. We show that exchange of phonons generates effective nearest-neighbor repulsion between particles and also gives rise to interactions that move the pair as a whole. The two-polaron phase diagram exhibits two sharp transitions, leading to light dimers at strong coupling and the flattening of the dimer dispersion at some critical values of the parameters. This dimer (quasi)self-trapping occu…
We investigate the attractive Hubbard model in infinite spatial dimensions at quarter filling. By combining dynamical mean-field theory with continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo simulations in the Nambu formalism, we directly deal with the superfluid phase in the population imbalanced system. We discuss the low energy properties in the polarized superfluid state and the pseudogap behavior in the vicinity of the critical temperature.
Motivated by the recent experiments that reported signatures of many-body localization of ultracold atoms in optical lattices [M. Schreiber {\it et al.}, Science {\bf 349}, 842 (2015)], we study dynamics of highly excited states in the strongly disordered Hubbard model in one dimension. Owing to the $SU(2)$ spin symmetry, spin degrees of freedom form a delocalized thermal bath with a narrow bandwidth. The spin bath mediates slow particle transport, eventually leading to delocalization of particles. The particle hopping rate is exponentially small in $t/W$ ($t$, $W$ being hopping and disorder s…
We investigate the Bose-Hubbard chain in the presence of nearest-neighbor pairing. The pairing term gives rise to an unusual gapped $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Ising phase that has number fluctuation but no off-diagonal long range order. This phase has a strongly correlated many-body doubly degenerate ground state which is effectively a gap-protected macroscopic qubit. In the strongly interacting limit, the system can be mapped onto an anisotropic transverse spin chain, which in turn can be mapped to the better-known fermionic sister of the paired Bose-Hubbard chain: the Kitaev chain which hosts zero-energ…
Engineering long-range interactions in cold-atom quantum simulators can lead to exotic quantum many-body behavior. Fermionic atoms in ultracold atomic mixtures can act as mediators, giving rise to long-range RKKY-type interactions characterized by the dimensionality and density of the fermionic gas. Here, we propose several tuning knobs, accessible in current experimental platforms, that allow to further control the range and shape of the mediated interactions, extending the existing quantum simulation toolbox. In particular, we include an additional optical lattice for the fermionic mediator,…
We show theoretically that the sudden application of an appropriate ac field to correlated lattice fermions flips the band structure and effectively switches the interaction from repulsive to attractive. The nonadiabatically driven system is characterized by a negative temperature with a population inversion. We numerically demonstrate the converted interaction in an ac-driven Hubbard model with the nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory solved by the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method. Based on this, we propose an efficient ramp-up protocol for ac fields that can suppress heating,…
Pairing of mobile charge carriers in doped antiferromagnets plays a key role in the emergence of unconventional superconductivity. In these strongly correlated materials, the pairing mechanism is often assumed to be mediated by magnetic correlations, in contrast to phonon-mediated interactions in conventional superconductors. A precise understanding of the underlying mechanism in real materials is, however, still lacking, and has been driving experimental and theoretical research for the past 40 years. Early theoretical studies established the emergence of binding among dopants in ladder syste…
We present a scheme to implement a Fermi-Hubbard-like model in ultracold atoms in optical lattices and analyze the topological features of its ground state. In particular, we show that the ground state for appropriate parameters has a large overlap with a lattice version of the bosonic Laughlin state at filling factor one half. The scheme utilizes laser assisted and normal tunnelling in a checkerboard optical lattice. The requirements on temperature, interactions, and hopping strengths are similar to those needed to observe the Néel antiferromagnetic ordering in the standard Fermi-Hubbard mode…
We study the off-equilibrium dynamics of the infinite dimensional Bose Hubbard Model after a quantum quench. The dynamics can be analyzed exactly by mapping it to an effective Newtonian evolution. For integer filling, we find a dynamical transition separating regimes of small and large quantum quenches starting from the superfluid state. This transition is very similar to the one found for the fermionic Hubbard model by mean field approximations.
We propose a method to directly measure the temperature of a gas of weakly interacting fermionic atoms loaded into an optical lattice. This technique relies on Raman spectroscopy and is applicable to experimentally relevant temperature regimes. Additionally, we show that a similar spectroscopy scheme can be used to obtain information on the quasiparticle properties and Hubbard bands of the metallic and Mott-insulating states of interacting fermionic spin mixtures. These two methods provide experimentalists with novel probes to accurately characterize fermionic quantum gases confined to optical…
We investigate cold bosonic impurity atoms trapped in a vortex lattice formed by condensed bosons of another species. We describe the dynamics of the impurities by a bosonic Hubbard model containing occupation-dependent parameters to capture the effects of strong impurity-impurity interactions. These include both a repulsive direct interaction and an attractive effective interaction mediated by the BEC. The occupation dependence of these two competing interactions drastically affects the Hubbard model phase diagram, including causing the disappearance of some Mott lobes
We analyze the finite-temperature phase diagram of the boson-fermion-Hubbard model with Feshbach converting interaction, using the coherent-state path-integral method. We show that depending on the position of the bosonic band, this type of interaction, even if weak, can drive the system into the resonant superfluid phase in the strong bosonic interaction limit. It turns out that this phase can exist for an arbitrary number of fermions (i.e., fermionic concentration between 0 and 2) but with the bosonic particle number very close to an integer value. We point out that the standard time-of-flig…
