This review summarizes progress on structural composites with carbon nanotube fibres. It starts by analyzing their development towards a macroscopic ensemble of elongated and aligned crystalline domains, alongside the evolution of the structure of traditional high-performance fibres. Literature on tensile properties suggests that there are two emerging grades: highly aligned fibres spun from liquid crystalline solutions, with high modulus and strength, and spun from aerogels of ultra long-nanotubes, combining high strength and fracture energy. The fabrication of large unidirectional fabrics with similar properties as the fibres is presently a challenge, which CNT alignment remaining a key factor. A promising approach is to produce fabrics directly from aerogel filaments without having to densify and handle individual CNT fibres. Structural composites of CNT fibres have reached high longitudinal properties, however, on relatively small samples. In general, there is need to demonstrate fabrication of large CNT fibre laminate composites using standard fabrication routes and to study longitudinal and transverse mechanical properties in tension and compression. Complementary areas of development are interlaminar reinforcement with CNT fabric interleaves, and multifunctional structural composites with energy storage or harvesting functions.
Fibres of ultralong and aligned carbon nanotubes (CNT) have axial properties above reference engineering materials, proving to be exceptional materials for application in structural composites, energy storage and other devices. For CNT fibres produced by direct spinning from floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition (FCCVD), a scaled-up method, the challenge is to simultaneously achieve high process conversion and high-performance properties. This work presents a parametric study of the CNT fibre spinning process by establishing the relation between synthesis conditions, molecular compositio…
Carbon nanotube (CNT) fibres are firmly established as a new high-performance fibre, but their tensile mechanical properties remain a relatively small fraction of those of the constituent CNTs. Clear structure-property relations and accurate mechanical models are pressing requirements to bridge this gap. In this work we analyse the structural evolution and molecular stress transfer in CNT fibres by performing in-situ synchrotron wide- and small-angle X-ray scattering and Raman spectroscopy during tensile deformation. The results show that CNT fibres can be accurately described as network of bu…
Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs) of sufficiently large diameter and a few layers self-collapse into flat ribbons at atmospheric pressure, forming bundles of stacked CNTs that maximize packing and thus CNT interaction. Their improved stress transfer by shear makes collapsed CNTs ideal building blocks in macroscopic fibers of CNTs with high-performance longitudinal properties, particularly high tensile properties as reinforcing fibres. This work introduces cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy of FIB-milled samples as a way to univocally identify collapsed CNTs and to determine the full popula…
Macroscopic ensembles of nanocarbons, such as fibres of carbon nanotubes (CNT), are characterised by a complex hierarchical structure combining coherent crystalline regions with a large porosity arising from imperfect packing of the large rigid building blocks. Such structure is at the centre of a wide range of charge storage and transfer processes when CNT fibres are used as electrodes and/or current collectors. This work introduces a method based on wide and small-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS/SAXS) to obtain structural descriptors of CNT fibres and which enables in situ characterisation duri…
Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs)-polymer composites are promising candidates for a myriad of applications. Ad-hoc CNTs-polymer composite fabrication techniques inherently pose roadblock to optimized processing resulting in microstructural defects i.e., void formation, poor interfacial adhesion, wettability, and agglomeration of CNTs inside the polymer matrix. Although improvement in the microstructures can be achieved via additional processing steps such as-mechanical methods and/or chemical functionalization, the resulting composites are somewhat limited in structural and functional performances. Here…
Corrosion is an inevitable phenomenon that is inherent in metals and even though there has been significant research on this subject, no ideal protection has been discovered to fully prevent corrosion. However, methods such as using protective coatings, and modifying the structure or composition of the material have been used to slow down gradual corrosion and fortunately they proved to be quite beneficial. The research focus has shifted to integrating novel materials and structures to improve the corrosion resistance of composites. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are an attractive and promising fille…
The susceptibility to delamination is one of the main concerns in fiber reinforced polymer composites (FRPs). This work demonstrates improvements of 60% in Mode-I fracture toughness after integration of thin (~30 micron), continuous veils of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) directly deposited onto carbon fiber fabric as the CNT are drawn from the gas-phase using a semi-industrial process. A combination of optical imaging, scanning electron microscopy and a Raman spectroscopy provide a new rapid tool to unambiguously determine the crack propagation path by simple visual inspection of fracture surface. The incorporation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) within polymer hosts offers a great platform for the development of advanced thermoelectric (TE) composite materials. Over the years, several CNT/polymer composite formulations have been investigated on an effort to maximize the TE performance. Meanwhile, several studies focused on the decay dynamics of the charged excitons within CNTs itself and therefrom derived structures, aiming to investigate the lifetimes and the corresponding recombination processes of free charge carriers. The latter physical phenomena play a crucial role in the performance …
Composites of direct-spun carbon nanotube (CNT) mats and epoxy are manufactured and tested in order to determine their mechanical and electrical properties. The mats are spun directly from a floating catalyst, chemical vapour deposition reactor. The volume fraction of epoxy is varied widely by suitable dilution of the epoxy resin with acetone. Subsequent evaporation of the acetone, followed by a cure cycle, leads to composites of varying volume fraction of CNT, epoxy and air. The modulus, strength, electrical conductivity and piezoresistivity of the composites are measured. The CNT mats and th…
In the quest to increase battery performance, nanostructuring battery electrodes gives access to architectures with electrical conductivity and solid-state diffusion regimes not accessible with traditional electrodes based on aggregated spherical microparticles, while often also contributing to the cyclability of otherwise unstable active materials. This work describes electrodes where active material and current collector are formed as a single nanostructured composite network, consisting of macroscopic fabrics of carbon nanotube fibers covered with conformal MoS2 grown preferentially aligned…
This paper presents a new concept to place continuous curved fibres for CFRP composites, which can be fulfilled by potential additive or hybrid manufacturing technology. Based on the loading condition, principal stress trajectories are generated through finite element analysis (FEA) and used as the guidance of the placement paths for carbon fibres. Three numerical cases, an open-hole single ply lamina under uniaxial tension and an open-hole cross-ply laminate under biaxial tension and normal pressure, are studied and compared with traditional reinforced composites with unidirectional fibres. We present a novel computational framework to simulate the electromechanical response of self-sensing carbon nanotube (CNT)-based composites experiencing fracture. The computational framework combines electrical-deformation-fracture finite element modelling with a mixed micromechanics formulation. The latter is used to estimate the constitutive properties of CNT-based composites, including the elastic tensor, fracture energy, electrical conductivity, and linear piezoresistive coefficients. These properties are inputted into a coupled electro-structural finite element model, which simulates the…

This work presents a scalable method to produce robust all-solid electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs), compatible with roll-to-roll processes and structural laminate composite fabrication. It consists in sandwiching and pressing an ionic liquid (IL) based polymer electrolyte membrane between two CNT fiber sheet electrodes at room temperature, and laminating with ordinary plastic film. This fabrication method is demonstrated by assembling large area devices of up to 100 cm2 with electrodes fabricated in-house, as well as with commercial CNT fiber sheets. As far as the tensile properties of natural fibres as reinforcements for composites are concerned, flax fibres will stay at the top-end. However, an efficient conversion of fibre properties into their corresponding composite properties has been a challenge, due to the fibre damages done through the conventional textile methods utilised to process flax. These techniques impart disadvantageous features onto fibres at both micro, and mesolevel, which degrade the mechanical performances of flax fibre reinforced composites, FFRC. Undulation of fibre is one of those detrimental features that occur d…
Short-fiber-reinforced polymer composites are increasingly used in engineering applications and industrial products owing to their unique combination of superior mechanical properties, and relatively easy and low cost manufacturing process. The mechanical behavior of short carbon nanotube (CNT) polymer composites, however, remains poorly understood due to size and time limitations of experiments and atomistic simulations. To address this issue, the tensile fracture behavior of short CNT reinforced poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix composites is investigated using a coarse-grained (CG) m…
The damage mechanisms and load redistribution of high strength TC17 titanium alloy/unidirectional SiC fibre composite (fibre diameter = 100 $μ$m) under high temperature (350 °C) fatigue cycling have been investigated in situ using synchrotron X-ray computed tomography (CT) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) for high cycle fatigue (HCF) under different stress amplitudes. The three-dimensional morphology of the crack and fibre fractures has been mapped by CT. During stable growth, matrix cracking dominates with the crack deflecting (by 50-100 $μ$m in height) when bypassing bridging fibres. A small numb…
We present a computational framework to explore the effect of microstructure and constituent properties upon the fracture toughness of fibre-reinforced polymer composites. To capture microscopic matrix cracking and fibre-matrix debonding, the framework couples the phase field fracture method and a cohesive zone model in the context of the finite element method. Virtual single-notched three point bending tests are conducted. The actual microstructure of the composite is simulated by an embedded cell in the fracture process zone, while the remaining area is homogenised to be an anisotropic elast…
Human transport to Mars and deep space explorations demand the development of new materials with extraordinary high performance-to-mass ratios. Promising candidates to fulfill these requirements are ultrahigh strength lightweight (UHSL) materials, which consist of polymer matrices fortified by pristine carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Previous investigations have showed that with an increase in CNT diameter, its preferred configuration changes from a circular form to a flattened shape that can be obtained in high pressure or tension conditions. The ReaxFF reactive force field can reveal detailed chemi…
Flax fibre reinforced composites are becoming popular in the automotive and civil industries due to their environmentally friendly nature in terms of production and recycling and for their good specific strength. Textile structures undergo transverse compaction during composite manufacturing which changes the fabric thickness and ultimately fibre volume fraction of composites. Here, different flax fibre structures were investigated for compaction behaviour during composite forming to study the thickness changes of these fabrics under pressures between 1 and 10 bars. A range of composite manufa…
This paper addresses the numerical simulation of self-piercing rivetting processes to join fibre reinforced polymers and sheet metals. Special emphasis is placed on the modelling of the deformation and failure behaviour of the composite material. Different from the simulation of rivetting processes in metals, which requires the modelling of large plastic deformations, the mechanical response of composites is typically governed by intra- and interlaminar damage phenomena. Depending on the polymeric matrix, viscoelastic effects can interfere particularly with the long-term behaviour of the joint…

A structural composite with integrated electric double layer capacitive storage is produced by resin infusion of a lay up including woven glass fabric used as mechanical reinforcement, carbon nanotube non-woven fabrics as electrodes/current collectors and a polymer electrolyte. The energy-storing layer is patterned with holes, which after integration form r…
We investigate the role of microstructural bridging on the fracture toughness of composite materials. To achieve this, a new computational framework is presented that integrates phase field fracture and cohesive zone models to simulate fibre breakage, matrix cracking and fibre-matrix debonding. The composite microstructure is represented by an embedded cell at the vicinity of the crack tip, whilst the rest of the sample is modelled as an anisotropic elastic solid. The model is first validated against experimental data of transverse matrix cracking from single-notched three-point bending tests.…
In this paper, the impact behaviour of composite laminates is investigated, and their potential for ballistic protection assessed, as a function of the reinforcing materials and structures for three representative fibre-reinforced epoxy systems involving carbon, glass, or para-aramid fibre reinforcements, respectively. A multiscale coupled experimental/numerical study on the composite material properties is performed, starting from single fibre, to fibre bundles (yarns), to single composite ply, and finally at laminate level. Uniaxial tensile tests on single fibres and fibre bundles are perfor…

The creep behaviour of a creep-resistant AE42 magnesium alloy reinforced with Saffil short fibres and SiC particulates in various combinations has been examined in the longitudinal direction, i.e., the plane containing random fibre orientation was parallel to the loading direction, in the temperature range of 175-300 C at the stress levels ranging from 60 to 140 MPa using impression creep test technique. At 175 C, normal creep behaviour, i.e., strain rate decreasing with strain and then reaching a steady state, is observed at all the stresses employed. At 240 C, normal creep behaviour is obser…
In this work, a coarse-grained (CG) model of carbon nanotube (CNT) reinforced polymer matrix composites is developed. A distinguishing feature of the CG model is the ability to capture interactions between polymer chains and nanotubes. The CG potentials for nanotubes and polymer chains are calibrated using the strain energy conservation between CG models and full atomistic systems. The applicability and efficiency of the CG model in predicting the elastic properties of CNT/polymer composites are evaluated through verification processes with molecular simulations. The simulation results reveal …
The measured capacitance, modulus and strength of carbon nanotube-polyaniline (CNT-PANI) composite electrodes render them promising candidates for structural energy storage devices. Here, CNT-PANI composite electrodes are manufactured with electrodeposition of PANI onto the bundle network of CNT mats produced via a floating catalyst chemical vapour deposition process. PANI comprises 0% to 30% by volume of the electrode. The composition, modulus, strength and capacitance of the electrodes is measured in the initial state, after the first charge, and after 1000 charge/discharge cycles. Electrode…
The mechanical performance of reinforced composites is strongly influenced at different scales by the stress transferred at the matrix-fibre interfaces and at any surface where material discontinuity occurs. In particular, the mechanical response of elastomeric composites where the reinforcement is composed by cords with helically wound fibres is heavily compromised by fatigue and delamination phenomena occurring at cord-rubber as well as at the ply interfaces, since rubber and polymeric matrices are mainly vulnerable to the accumulation of deviatoric energy due to the shear stresses transferr…
Maintaining the correct fibre orientations and stacking sequence in carbon-fibre reinforced polymers (CFRP) during manufacture is essential for achieving the required mechanical properties of a component. This paper presents and evaluates a method for the rapid characterisation of the fibre orientations present in CFRP structures, and the differentiation of different stacking sequences, through the Radon-transform analysis of complex-valued eddy-current testing (ECT) inspection data. A high-frequency (20 MHz) eddy-current inspection system was used to obtain 2D scans of a range of CFRP samples…

Combined with 97 % capacity retention after 1500 cycles at a current density of 5 A/g, both capacity and stability are significantly above literature data. Detailed investigations invol…
The creation and ultrastructure of kink-bands in flax fibres are key issues for developing more and more performing biobased composite materials. Nevertheless, despite many hypotheses and structural characterization, the exact origin of kink-bands and the moment they appear remain unexplained. Here, by using cutting-edge techniques such as microtomography, a range of flax stems and fibres, from the green stem to stretched fibres, were morphologically explored. The study shows that all the extracted fibres, whether scutched, combed or stretched, contain significant amounts of kink-bands, which …
Living systems are built of multiscale-composites: materials formed of components with different properties that are assembled in complex micro- and nano-structures. Such biological multiscale-composites often show outstanding physical properties that are unachieved by artificial materials. A major scientific goal is thus to understand the assembly processes and the relationship between structure and function in order to reproduce them in a new generation of biomimetic high-performance materials. Here, we tested how the assembly of spider silk nano-fibres (i.e. glue coated 0.5 micron thick fib…
