The standard Ginzburg-Landau model of competing-order superconductors is studied. It is observed that this model possesses two distinct species of vortex, and consequently has two distinct integer valued topological charges. A simple point particle model of long range forces between (anti)vortices of any species is developed and compared with numerical simulations of the full field theory, excellent agreement being found. Some of the results are quite counterintuitive. For example, a parameter regime exists where vortices of one species repel both vortices and antivortices of the other.
We investigate the interaction potential of superconducting vortices at the full quantum level. We formulate the interaction potential in a constrained path integral and calculate it by the quantum Monte Carlo simulation. The vortex-vortex potential is attractive (type-I), repulsive (type-II), and flat (critical) depending on a coupling constant. The vortex-antivortex potential also depends on the coupling constant at long range but is always attractive at short range.
Superconducting materials with noncentrosymmetric lattices lacking space inversion symmetry exhibit a variety of interesting parity-breaking phenomena, including the magneto-electric effect, spin-polarized currents, helical states, and the unusual Josephson effect. We demonstrate, within a Ginzburg-Landau framework describing noncentrosymmetric superconductors with $O$ point group symmetry, that vortices can exhibit an inversion of the magnetic field at a certain distance from the vortex core. In stark contrast to conventional superconducting vortices, the magnetic-field reversal in the parity…
The magnetic field of moving vortices in anisotropic superconductors is considered in the framework of time-dependent London approach. It is found that at distances large relative to the core size, the field may change sign that alludes to a non-trivial intervortex interaction which depends on the crystal anisotropy and on the speed and direction of motion. These effects are caused to the electric fields and corresponding normal currents which appear due to the moving vortex magnetic structure. We find that the motion related part of the magnetic field attenuates at large distances as $1/r^3$ …
We study superconductors with two order components and phase separation driven by intercomponent density-density interaction, focusing on the phase where only one condensate has non-zero ground-state density and a competing order parameter exists only in vortex cores. We demonstrate there, that multi-body intervortex interactions can be strongly non-pairwise, leading to some unusual vortex patterns in an external field, such as vortex pairs and vortex chains. We demonstrate that, in external magnetic field, such a system undergoes a field-driven phase transition from (broken) $U(1)$ to (broken…
We discuss the unconventional magnetic response and vortex states arising in noncentrosymmetric superconductors with chiral octahedral and tetrahedral ($O$ or $T$) symmetry. We microscopically derive Ginzburg-Landau free energy. It is shown that due to spin-orbit and Zeeman coupling magnetic response of the system can change very significantly with temperature. For sufficiently strong coupling this leads to a crossover from type-1 superconductivity at elevated temperature to vortex states at lower temperature. The external magnetic field decay in such superconductors does not have the simple e…
In a single-component Ginzburg-Landau model which possesses thermodynamically stable vortex excitations, the zero-field superconducting phase transition is second order even when fluctuations are included. Beyond the mean-field approximation the transition is described in terms of proliferation of vortex loops. Here we determine the order of the superconducting transition in an effective 3D vortex-loop model for the recently proposed multiband type-1.5 superconductors. The vortex interaction is nonmonotonic, i.e., exponentially screened and attractive at large separations, and short-range repu…
Competing effects of mass anisotropy and spin Zeeman coupling on the upper critical field of a mixed $d$- and s-wave superconductor
Considering a $d$-wave superconductor being in proximity to a two-dimensional Weyl model, a topological superconductor with gapless edge states may be realized. We here demonstrate that the system can become topologically trivial when an additional d-density-wave order is also included. The edge states become gapped and may be detected in experiments. For this, the d-density-wave order can be detected experimentally, so that different scenarios for the pseudogap in high-T$_c$ superconductors may be distinguished. Moreover, this method may be used to detect various hidden orders through putting…
Motivated by the recent experimentally observed manifestations of the quantum critical point fluctuations in the thermodynamic properties of multiband superconductors, we derive a general expression for the Josephson current of various junctions between two superconductors in the phase of superconductivity coexistence with the spin-density-wave. We demonstrate that the critical current peaks at the quantum critical point that separates pure and mixed superconducting phases. We argue that our results are generic and, in particular, can be adopted to explain the recent observations of a nonmonot…
Experimental evidence for the existence of a fluctuating charge-density wave order in the pseudogap regime of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ has renewed interest in its interplay with superconductivity. Here, we consider the problem within a nonlinear sigma model, which was recently proposed to describe the apparent competition between the two order parameters. In particular, we use a saddle-point approximation to calculate the properties of superconducting vortex excitations within such a model. In addition, we analytically calculate a collection of experimentally observable quantities, which probe b…
We study the nonequilibrium dynamics of an electronic model with competing spin-density-wave and unconventional superconductivity in the context of iron pnictides. Focusing on the collisionless regime, we find that magnetic and superconducting order parameters may coexist dynamically after a sudden quench, even though the equilibrium thermodynamic state supports only one order parameter. We consider various initial conditions concomitant with the phase diagram and in a certain regime identify different oscillatory amplitude modes with incommensurate frequencies for magnetic and superconducting…
Disorder in two-band superconductors with repulsive interband interaction induces a frustrated competition between the phase-locking preferences of the various potential and kinetic terms. This frustrated interaction can result in the formation of an $s+is$ superconducting state, that breaks the time-reversal symmetry. In this paper we study the normal modes and their associated coherence lengths in such materials. We especially focus on the consequences of the soft modes stemming from the frustration and time-reversal-symmetry breakdown. We find that two-bands superconductors with such impuri…
In the iron pnictide superconductors, theoretical calculations have consistently shown enhancements of the static magnetic susceptibility at both the stripe-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) and in-plane ferromagnetic (FM) wavevectors. However, the possible existence of FM fluctuations has not yet been examined from a microscopic point of view. Here, using $^{75}$As NMR data, we provide clear evidence for the existence of FM spin correlations in both the hole- and electron-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ families of iron-pnictide superconductors. These FM fluctuations appear to compete with superconductivity …
Vortex cores in a superconductor can develop structure and manifest competing orders. In strong magnetic fields, the inter-vortex distance can become short enough for vortex cores to overlap, giving rise to long ranged textures. We show that spin orbit coupling (SOC) can modify the interaction between vortex cores to give rise to undulating competing order fields. We illustrate this using the SO(3) theory of competing orders, wherein superconductivity and a scalar order form a three-component vector field. We consider a spherical surface with a radial magnetic flux that creates two vortices. W…

Superconductors can support large dissipation-free electrical currents only if vortex lines are effectively immobilized by material defects. Macroscopic critical currents depend on elemental interactions of vortices with individual pinning centers. Pinning mechanisms are nontrivial for large-size defects such as self-assembled nanoparticles. We investigate the problem of a vortex system interacting with an isolated defect using time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau simulations. In particular, we study the instability-limited depinning process and extract the dependence of the pin-breaking force on in…
A gel consists of a network of particles or molecules formed for example using the sol-gel process, by which a solution transforms into a porous solid. Particles or molecules in a gel are mainly organized on a scaffold that makes up a porous system. Quantized vortices in type II superconductors mostly form spatially homogeneous ordered or amorphous solids. Here we present high-resolution imaging of the vortex lattice displaying dense vortex clusters separated by sparse or entirely vortex-free regions in $β$-Bi$_2$Pd superconductor. We find that the intervortex distance diverges upon decreasing…
From temperature and magnetic field dependent point-contact spectroscopy on the ferromagnetic superconductor Sr$_{0.5}$Ce$_{0.5}$FBiS$_2$ (bulk superconducting $T_c$ = 2.5 K) we observe (a) a pseudogap in the normal state that sustains to a remarkably high temperature of 40 K and (b) two-fold enhancement of $T_c$ upto 5 K in the point-contact geometry. In addition, Andreev reflection spectroscopy reveals a superconducting gap of 6 meV for certain point-contacts suggesting that the mean field $T_c$ of this system could be approximately 40 K, the onset temperature of pseudo-gap. Our results sugg…
The upper critical field of multiband superconductors is an important quantity that can reveal the details about the nature of the superconducting pairing. Here we experimentally map out the complete upper critical field phase diagram of a stoichiometric superconductor, CaKFe$_4$As$_4$, up to 90T for different orientations of the magnetic field and at temperatures down to 4.2K. The upper critical fields are extremely large, reaching values close to ~3$T_c$ at the lowest temperature, and the anisotropy decreases dramatically with temperature leading to essentially isotropic superconductivity at…
Motivated by the recent development of terahertz pump-probe experiments, we investigate the short-time dynamics in superconductors with multiple attractive pairing channels. Studying a single-band square lattice model with spin-spin interaction as an example, we find the signatures of collective excitations of the pairing symmetries (known as Bardasis-Schrieffer modes) as well as the order parameter amplitude (Higgs mode) in the short-time dynamics of the spectral gap and quasiparticle distribution after an excitation by a pump pulse. We show that the polarization and intensity of the pulse ca…
To understand the origin of unconventional charge-density-wave (CDW) states in cuprate superconductors, we establish the self-consistent CDW equation, and analyze the CDW instabilities based on the realistic Hubbard model, without assuming any $q$-dependence and the form factor. Many higher-order many-body processes, which are called the vertex corrections, are systematically generated by solving the CDW equation. When the spin fluctuations are strong, the uniform $q=0$ nematic CDW with $d$-form factor shows the leading instability. The axial nematic CDW instability at $q = Q_a = (δ,0)$ ($δ\ap…
We introduce a two-dimensional Chern insulator in proximity to a $d$-wave pseudogap state of the high-T$_c$ superconducting material as an effective platform to realize the higher order topological system. The proximity-induced $d$-density-wave (DDW) order in the Chern insulator layer serves as an effective mass. The edge states will be fully gapped by this DDW order. In the real space, the sign of the DDW order parameter changes at the system corners due to the $d$-wave factor, leading to the gapless corner states, indicating that this system may be in a higher order topological state. The hi…
Muon Spin Rotation ($μ$SR) and $^{19}$F Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) measurements were performed to investigate the effect of Mn for Fe substitutions in La$_{1-y}$Y$_{y}$Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$AsO$_{0.89}$F$_{0.11}$ superconductors. While for $y = 0$ a very low critical concentration of Mn ($x = 0.2$%) is needed to quench superconductivity, as $y$ increases the negative chemical pressure introduced by Y for La substitution stabilizes superconductivity and for $y= 20$% it is suppressed at Mn contents an order of magnitude larger. A magnetic phase arises once superconductivity is suppressed both fo…
We calculate the collective mode spectrum in models of superconductors with attractive interactions in s-and d channels as a function of their relative strength, across a phase diagram that includes transition between s, s+id, and d-wave ground states. For one-band systems, we recover the largely known results for the phase, amplitude, and Bardasis-Schrieffer modes of pure s or d-states, and show how the well-defined Bardasis-Schrieffer mode softens near the s + id phase boundary and evolves in a characteristic manner through the s + id phase as a mixed symmetry mode. For two-band systems, we …
We report the low-energy electrodynamics of a moderately clean A15 superconductor (SC) following ultrafast excitation to understand and manipulate terahertz (THz) quasi--particle (QP) transport by tuning pump photoexcitation of from competing orders. Using 35-fs optical pulses, we observe a non-thermal enhancement in the low frequency conductivity, opposite to that observed for THz pump, which persists up to an additional critical temperature, above the SC one, from an electronic order in the Martensitic normal state. In the SC state, the fluence dependence of pair breaking kinetics together w…
