The Electric Field Integral Equation (EFIE) is notorious for its ill-conditioning both in frequency and h-refinement. Several techniques exist for fixing the equation conditioning problems based on hierarchical strategies, Calderon techniques, and related technologies. This work leverages on a new approach, based on the construction of tailored spectral filters for the EFIE components which allow the block renormalization of the EFIE spectrum resulting in a provably constant condition number for the equation. This is achieved without the need for a barycentric refinement and with low computational overhead compared with other schemes. In particular, only sparse matrices are required in addition to the EFIE original matrix. Numerical results will show the robustness of our scheme and its application to the solution of realistic problems.
The Electric Field Integral Equation (EFIE) is a well-established tool to solve electromagnetic scattering problems. However, the development of efficient and easy to implement preconditioners remains an active research area. In recent years, operator preconditioning approaches have become popular for the EFIE, where the electric field boundary integral operator is regularised by multiplication with another convenient operator. A particularly intriguing choice is the exact Magnetic-to-Electric (MtE) operator as regulariser. But, evaluating this operator is as expensive as solving the original …
In this work, we propose simple and efficient tridiagonal computed sparse preconditioners for improving the condition number for large compressed Electric Field Integral Equation (EFIE) Method of Moment (MoM) matrix. The preconditioner computation is based on the triangle and block triangle interaction and filled tridiagonally. The computed preconditioner is highly sparse and retains the O(N) complexity of computation and preconditioner matrix solution time. Numerical results show the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed preconditioner.
This paper introduces a hierarchical interpolative decomposition butterfly-LU factorization (H-IDBF-LU) preconditioner for solving two-dimensional electric-field integral equations (EFIEs) in electromagnetic scattering problems of perfect electrically conducting objects with open surfaces. H-IDBF-LU leverages the interpolative decomposition butterfly factorization (IDBF) to compress dense blocks of the discretized EFIE operator to expedite its application; this compressed operator also serves as an approximate LU factorization of the EFIE operator leading to an efficient preconditioner in iter…
In this paper, a robust and effective preconditioner for the fast Method of Moments(MoM) based Hierarchal Electric Field Integral Equation(EFIE) solver is proposed using symmetric near-field Schur's complement method. In this preconditioner, near-field blocks are scaled to a diagonal block matrix and these near-field blocks are replaced with the scaled diagonal block matrix which reduces the near-field storage memory and the overall matrix vector product time. Scaled diagonal block matrix is further used as a preconditioner and due to the block diagonal form of the final preconditioner, no add…
We construct mesh-independent and parameter-robust monolithic solvers for the coupled primal Stokes-Darcy problem. Three different formulations and their discretizations in terms of conforming and non-conforming finite element methods and finite volume methods are considered. In each case, robust preconditioners are derived using a unified theoretical framework. In particular, the suggested preconditioners utilize operators in fractional Sobolev spaces. Numerical experiments demonstrate the parameter-robustness of the proposed solvers.
The coupled Darcy-Stokes problem is widely used for modeling fluid transport in physical systems consisting of a porous part and a free part. In this work we consider preconditioners for monolitic solution algorithms of the coupled Darcy-Stokes problem, where the Darcy problem is in primal form. We employ the operator preconditioning framework and utilize a fractional solver at the interface between the problems to obtain order optimal schemes that are robust with respect to the material parameters, i.e. the permeability, viscosity and Beavers-Joseph-Saffman parameter. Our approach is similar …
We are interested in a fast solver for linear systems obtained by discretizing the Stokes problem with multi-patch Isogeometric Analysis. We use Dual-Primal Isogeometric Tearing and Interconnecting (IETI-DP) methods. In resent years, IETI-DPand related methods have been studied extensively, mainly for the Poisson problem. For the Stokes equations, several challenges arise since the corresponding system is not positive definite, but has saddle point structure. Moreover, the Stokes equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions have a null-space, consisting of the constant pressure modes. This pos…
Solution methods for the nonlinear partial differential equation of the Rudin-Osher-Fatemi (ROF) and minimum-surface models are fundamental for many modern applications. Many efficient algorithms have been proposed. First order methods are common. They are popular due to their simplicity and easy implementation. Some second order Newton-type iterative methods have been proposed like Chan-Golub-Mulet method. In this paper, we propose a new Newton-Krylov solver for primal-dual finite element discretization of the ROF model. The method is so simple that we just need to use some diagonal precondit…
We propose a novel preconditioned inexact primal-dual interior point method for constrained convex quadratic programming problems. The algorithm we describe invokes the preconditioned conjugate gradient method on a new reduced Schur complement KKT system, in implicit form. In contrast to standard approaches, the Schur complement formulation we consider enables reuse of the factorization of the KKT matrix with rows and columns corresponding to inequality constraints excluded, across all interior point iterations. Further, two new preconditioners are presented for the resulting reduced system, t…
Phase-field fracture models lead to variational problems that can be written as a coupled variational equality and inequality system. Numerically, such problems can be treated with Galerkin finite elements and primal-dual active set methods. Specifically, low-order and high-order finite elements may be employed, where, for the latter, only few studies exist to date. The most time-consuming part in the discrete version of the primal-dual active set (semi-smooth Newton) algorithm consists in the solutions of changing linear systems arising at each semi-smooth Newton step. We propose a new parall…
Widely employed for the accurate solution of the electroencephalography forward problem, the symmetric formulation gives rise to a first kind, ill-conditioned operator ill-suited for complex modelling scenarios. This work presents a novel preconditioning strategy based on an accurate spectral analysis of the operators involved which, differently from other Calderón-based approaches, does not necessitate the barycentric refinement of the primal mesh (i.e., no dual matrix is required). The discretization of the new formulation gives rise to a well-conditioned, symmetric, positive-definite system…
In this work, we provide a performance comparison between the Balancing Domain Decomposition by Constraints (BDDC) and the Algebraic Multigrid (AMG) preconditioners for cardiac mechanics on both structured and unstructured finite element meshes. The mechanical behavior of myocardium can be described by the equations of three-dimensional finite elasticity, which are discretized by finite elements in space and yield the solution of a large scale nonlinear algebraic system. This problem is solved by a Newton-Krylov method, where the solution of the Jacobian linear system is accelerated by BDDC/AM…
The Virtual Element Method (VEM) is a new family of numerical methods for the approximation of partial differential equations, where the geometry of the polytopal mesh elements can be very general. The aim of this article is to extend the balancing domain decomposition by constraints (BDDC) preconditioner to the solution of the saddle-point linear system arising from a VEM discretization of the two-dimensional Stokes equations. Under suitable hypotesis on the choice of the primal unknowns, the preconditioned linear system results symmetric and positive definite, thus the preconditioned conjuga…
We consider a linear iterative solver for large scale linearly constrained quadratic minimization problems that arise, for example, in optimization with PDEs. By a primal-dual projection (PDP) iteration, which can be interpreted and analysed as a gradient method on a quotient space, the given problem can be solved by computing sulutions for a sequence of constrained surrogate problems, projections onto the feasible subspaces, and Lagrange multiplier updates. As a major application we consider a class of optimization problems with PDEs, where PDP can be applied together with a projected cg meth…
We present the lowest-order hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin schemes with numerical integration (quadrature), denoted as HDG-P0, for the reaction-diffusion equation and the generalized Stokes equations on conforming simplicial meshes in two- and three-dimensions. Here by lowest order, we mean that the (hybrid) finite element space for the global HDG facet degrees of freedom (DOFs) is the space of piecewise constants on the mesh skeleton. A discontinuous piecewise linear space is used for the approximation of the local primal unknowns. We give the optimal a priori error analysis of the propo…
We deal with the Finite Element Tearing and Interconnecting Dual Primal (FETI-DP) preconditioner for elliptic problems discretized by the virtual element method (VEM). We extend the result of [22] to the three dimensional case. We prove polylogarithmic condition number bounds, independent of the number of subdomains, the mesh size, and jumps in the diffusion coefficients. Numerical experiments validate the theory

In this work, we consider fracture propagation in nearly incompressible and (fully) incompressible materials using a phase-field formulation. We use a mixed form of the elasticity equation to overcome volume locking effects and develop a robust, nonlinear and linear solver scheme and preconditioner for the resulting system. The coupled variational inequality system, which is solved monolithically, consists of three unknowns: displacements, pressure, and phase-field. Nonlinearities due to coupling, constitutive laws, and crack irreversibility are solved using a combined Newton algorithm for the…
