We analyze the optical properties of Radio-Loud quasars along the Main Sequence (MS) of quasars. A sample of 355 quasars selected on the basis of radio detection was obtained by cross-matching the FIRST survey at 20cm and the SDSS DR12 spectroscopic survey. We consider the nature of powerful emission at the high-FeII end of the MS. At variance with the classical radio-loud sources which are located in the Population B domain of the MS optical plane, we found evidence indicating a thermal origin of the radio emission of the highly accreting quasars of Population A.
Surveys have shown radio-loud (RL) quasars constitute $10 \%$-$15 \%$ of the total quasar population. However, it is unknown if the radio-loud fraction (RL quasars/Total quasars) remains consistent among different parameter spaces. This study shows that radio-loud fraction increases for increasing full width half maximum (FWHM) velocity of the H$β$ and MgII broad emission line. Our data has been obtained from Shen et al. We have constructed a sample of radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars from the Faint Im- ages Radio Sky at Twenty-one centimetres (FIRST) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS DR7), over the H-ATLAS Phase 1 Area (9h, 12h and 14.5h). Using a stacking analysis we find a significant correlation between the far-infrared luminosity and 1.4-GHz luminosity for radio-loud quasars. Partial correlation analysis confirms the intrinsic correlation after removing the redshift contribution while for radio-quiet quasars no partial correlation is found. One of the major unsolved questions on the understanding of the AGN population is the origin of the dichotomy between radio-quiet and radio-loud quasars. The most promising explanation is provided by the spin paradigm, which suggests radio-loud quasars have higher black hole spin. However, the measurement of black hole spin remains extremely challenging. Only very few z>5 quasars discovered to date are radio-loud, with a radio-to-optical flux ratio (radio-loudness parameter) higher than 10. Here we report the discovery of an optically luminous radio-loud quasar, SDSS J013127.34-032100.1 (J0131-0321 in short), at z=5.18+-0.01 using the Lijiang 2.4m and Magellan telescopes. J0131-0321 has a spectral energy distribution consistent with that of radio-loud quasars. With an i-band magnitude of 18.47 and radio flux density of 33 mJy, its radio-loudness parameter is ~100. We present the discovery of the radio-loud quasar PSO J352.4034-15.3373 at z=5.84 pm 0.02. This quasar is the radio brightest source known, by an order of magnitude, at z~6 with a flux density in the range of 8-100 mJy from 3GHz to 230MHz and a radio loudness parameter R>~1000. This source provides an unprecedented opportunity to study powerful jets and radio-mode feedback at the highest redshifts, and presents the first real chance to probe deep into the neutral intergalactic medium by detecting 21 cm absorption at the end of cosmic reionization.
Lobe-dominated radio-loud (LD RL) quasars occupy a restricted domain in the 4D Eigenvector 1 (4DE1) parameter space which implies restricted geometry/physics/kinematics for this subclass compared to the radio-quiet (RQ) majority of quasars. We perform an analysis of the properties of radio-loud (RL) and radio-quiet (RQ) quasars with MgII broad emission line (i-band magnitude $\leq 19.1$ and z $\leq 1.9$), selected from the parent sample of SDSS DR7 catalogue. For sources with full-width half maxima (FWHM) greater than \mbox{15,000 km s$^{-1}$} (very broad line sample; VBL) we find the radio loud fraction (RLF) to be about 40\%. We present rest-frame optical spectra of 12 nitrogen-loud quasars at z ~ 2.2, whose rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) spectra show strong nitrogen broad emission lines. To investigate their narrow-line region (NLR) metallicities, we measure the equivalent width (EW) of the [OIII]5007 emission line: if the NLR metallicity is remarkably high as suggested by strong UV nitrogen lines, the [OIII]5007 line flux should be very week due to the low equilibrium temperature of the ionized gas owing to significant metal cooling. We carry out a series of deep Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) S-band observations of a sample of 21 quasars at $z\sim6$. The new observations expand the searches of radio continuum emission to the optically faint quasar population at the highest redshift with rest-frame $4400 \rm Å$ luminosities down to $3 \times10^{11} \ L_{\odot}$. We present high angular resolution imaging ($23.9 \times 11.3$ mas, $138.6 \times 65.5$ pc) of the radio-loud quasar PSO~J352.4034$-$15.3373 at $z=5.84$ with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 1.54 GHz. This quasar has the highest radio-to-optical flux density ratio at such a redshift, making it the radio-loudest source known to date at $z \sim 6$. We investigate the dichotomy in the radio loudness distribution of quasars by modelling their radio emission and various selection effects using a Monte Carlo approach. The existence of two physically distinct quasar populations, the radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars, is controversial and over the last decade a bimodal distribution of radio loudness of quasars has been both affirmed and disputed. Q0957+561 was the first discovered gravitationally lensed quasar. The mirage shows two images of a radio-loud quasar at redshift z = 1.41. The time lag between these two images is well established around one year. To better constrain the hypotheses proposed to explain why only a few quasars are radio loud (RL), we compare the characteristics of 1958 nearby $(z\le 0.3)$ SDSS quasars, covered by the FIRST and NVSS radio surveys. Only 22\% are RL with $\log(L_{1.4{\rm GHz}}) \ge 22.5$ W Hz$^{-1}$, the majority being compact (C), weak radio sources (WRS), with $\log(L_{1.4{\rm GHz}}) < 24.5$ W Hz$^{-1}$. 15\% of the RL quasars have extended radio morphologies: 3\% have a core and a jet (J), 2\% have a core with one lobe (L), and 10\% have a core with two lobes (T), the majority being powerful radio sources …

Studies of radio-loud (RL) broad absorption line (BAL) quasars indicate that popular orientation-based BAL models fail to account for all observations. We compare covering factors of circumnuclear dusty obscurers in radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars. The radio-loud quasars are represented by a sample of FR II quasars obtained by cross-matching a catalog of the FR II radio sources selected by van Velzen et al. with the SDSS DR7 catalog of quasars. We investigate the clustering properties of 45441 radio-quiet quasars (RQQs) and 3493 radio-loud quasars (RLQs) drawn from a joint use of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and Faint Images of the Radio Sky at 20 cm (FIRST) surveys in the range $0.3<z<2.3$. Radio-loud Active Galactic Nuclei at z~2-4 are typically located in dense environments and their host galaxies are among the most massive systems at those redshifts, providing key insights for galaxy evolution. We report the 888 MHz radio detection in the Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey (RACS) of VIK J2318$-$3113, a $z$=6.44 quasar. Its radio luminosity (1.2 $\times 10^{26}$ W Hz$^{-1}$ at 5 GHz) compared to the optical luminosity (1.8 $\times 10^{24}$ W Hz$^{-1}$ at 4400 A) makes it the most distant radio-loud quasar observed so far, with a radio loudness R$\sim$70 (R$=L_\mathrm{5GHz}/L_\mathrm{4400A}$). There are only five radio-loud quasars currently known within 1 Gyr from the Big Bang ($z>6$) and the properties of their host galaxies have not been explored in detail. We present a NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) survey of [CII] (158 $μ$m) and underlying continuum emission of four $z>6$ radio-loud quasars, revealing their diverse properties. We examine the distribution of radio emission from ~42,000 quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, as measured in the LOFAR Two-Metre Sky Survey (LoTSS). We present a model of the radio luminosity distribution of the quasars that assumes that every quasar displays a superposition of two sources of radio emission: active galactic nuclei (jets) and star-formation. We have performed a search over 3440 deg$^2$ of Epoch 1 (2017-2019) of the Very Large Array Sky Survey to identify unobscured quasars in the optical ($0.2 < z < 3.2$) and obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the infrared that have brightened dramatically in the radio over the past one to two decades. We present a study of a sample of 223 radio-loud quasars (up to redshift $<$0.3) in order to investigate their spectral properties. Twenty-six of these radio-loud quasars are identified as Flat Spectrum Radio Quasars (FSRQs) and fifty-four are identified as Steep Spectrum Radio Quasars (SSRQs) based on their radio spectral index. This paper reports on the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectrum of three low redshift ($z \sim 0.6$) radio loud quasars, 3C 95, 3C 57 and PKS 0405-123. The spectra were obtained with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) of the Hubble Space Telescope. The bolometric thermal emission, $L_{bol}$, associated with the accretion flow is a large fraction of the Eddington limit for all of these sources. We present Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) 323 MHz radio continuum observations toward 13 radio-loud quasars at $z>5$, sampling the low-frequency synchrotron emission from these objects. Among the 12 targets successfully observed, we detected 10 above $4σ$ significance, while 2 remain undetected. All of the detected sources appear as point sources. Combined with previous radio continuum detections from the literature, 9 quasars have power-law spectral energy distributions throughout the radio range; for some the flux density drops with increasing frequency while it increases for others.…
Radio core dominance measurements, an indicator of jet orientation, sometimes rely on core flux density measurements from large-area surveys like Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty cm (FIRST) that have an angular resolution of only 5''. Such low-resolution surveys often fail to resolve cores from the extended emission resulting in an erroneous measurement. We examine the fundamental plane of black hole activity for correlations with redshift and radio loudness in both radio-loud and radio-quiet quasar populations. We analyzed a large sample of radio-loud and radio-quiet quasar spectra at redshift 1.0 < z < 1.2 to compare the inferred underlying quasar continuum slopes (after removal of the host galaxy contribution) with accretion disk models. The latter predict redder (decreasing) alpha_3000 continuum slopes (L_ν~ν^alpha at 3000Ang) with increasing black hole mass, bluer alpha_3000 with increasing luminosity at 3000Ang, and bluer alpha_3000 with increasing spin of the black hole, when all other parameters are held fixed. Jansky Very Large Array of 123 radio-loud quasars with redshifts in the range $2.5 \leq z \leq 5.28$ that form a complete flux limited sample ($\geq 70$ mJy at 1.4 GHz or 5 GHz). The relativistic jets created by some active galactic nuclei are important agents of AGN feedback. In spite of this, our understanding of what produces these jets is still incomplete. We conducted the first multi-frequency polarimetric imaging of four broad absorption line (BAL) quasars using Very Long Baseline Array at milli-arcsecond resolutions to investigate the inclination of the non-thermal jet and test the hypothesis that radio sources in BAL quasars are still young. Observations have shown that UV/optical variation amplitude of quasars depend on several physi- cal parameters including luminosity, Eddington ratio, and likely also black hole mass. We present a feedback mechanism for supermassive black holes and their host bulges that operates during epochs of radio-loud quasar activity. In the radio cores of relativistic quasar jets, internal shocks convert a fraction of ordered bulk kinetic energy into randomized relativistic ions, or in other words cosmic rays. Observations of luminous quasars and their supermassive black holes at z~6 suggest that they formed at dense matter peaks in the early universe. However, few studies have found definitive evidence that the quasars lie at cosmic density peaks, in clear contrast with theory predictions. We present X-ray spectral and long-term variability analyses of an unbiased sample of 361 optically selected radio-loud quasars (RLQs) utilizing sensitive serendipitous X-ray data from the Chandra and XMM-Newton archives. The spectral and temporal properties of RLQs are compared with those of radio-quiet quasars (RQQs) matched in $L_\mathrm{2500A}$ and $z$. The median power-law photon index ($Γ$) of RLQs is $1.84^{+0.01}_{-0.01}$, which is close to that of matched RQQs ($1.90^{+0.02}_{-0.01}$). Radio-Loud narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s), especially the extremely radio-loud ones, are widely accepted as the jetted versions of NLS1s. We explore the radio-loud fraction for NLS1s with recently released LoTSS DR1 at 150 MHz. The radio detection rate is about 28\% for LoTSS DR1. The radio detected NLS1s have lower redshift than the non-detected ones. Moreover, the 150 MHz radio luminosity of NLS1s detected by LoTSS are about two orders of magnitude weaker than that of the previous samples. We present VLT/SINFONI observations of 35 quasars at 2.1 < z < 3.2, the majority of which were selected from the Clusters Around Radio-Loud AGN (CARLA) survey. CARLA quasars have large CIV-based black hole (BH) masses (M(BH) > 10^9 Msun) and powerful radio emission (P(500MHz) > 27.5 W/Hz). We estimate Ha-based M(BH), finding a scatter of 0.35 dex compared to CIV. We evaluate several recipes for correcting CIV-based masses, which reduce the scatter to 0.24 dex. High-redshift radio sources provide plentiful opportunities for studying the formation and evolution of early galaxies and supermassive black holes.
