We study some maximum principle preserving and energy stable schemes for the Allen-Cahn-Ohta-Kawasaki model with fixed volume constraint. With the inclusion of a nonlinear term in the Ohta-Kawasaki free energy functional, we show that the Allen-Cahn-Ohta-Kawasaki dynamics is maximum principle preserving. We further design some first order energy stable numerical schemes which inherit the maximum principle preservation in both semi-discrete and fully-discrete levels. Furthermore, we apply the maximum principle preserving schemes to a general framework for binary systems with long-range interactions. We also present some numerical results to support our theoretical findings.
We develop efficient asymptotic-preserving time discretization schemes to solve the disparate mass kinetic system of a binary gas or plasma in the "relaxation time scale" relevant to the epochal relaxation phenomenon. Since the resulting model is associated to a parameter given by the square of the mass ratio between the light and heavy particles, we develop an asymptotic-preserving scheme in a novel decomposition strategy using the penalization method for multiscale collisional kinetic equations. Both the Boltzmann and Fokker-Planck-Landau (FPL) binary collision operators will be considered. …
We provide a framework for high-order discretizations of nonlinear scalar convection-diffusion equations that satisfy a discrete maximum principle. The resulting schemes can have arbitrarily high order accuracy in time and space, and can be stable and maximum-principle-preserving (MPP) with no step size restriction. The schemes are based on a two-tiered limiting strategy, starting with a high-order limiter-based method that may have small oscillations or maximum-principle violations, followed by an additional limiting step that removes these violations while preserving high order accuracy. The…
In this paper, we develop a first order (in time) numerical scheme for the binary fluid surfactant phase field model. The free energy contains a double-well potential, a nonlinear coupling entropy and a Flory-Huggins potential. The resulting coupled system consists of two Cahn-Hilliard type equations. This system is solved numerically by finite difference spatial approximation, in combination with convex splitting temporal discretization. We prove the proposed scheme is unique solvable, positivity-preserving and unconditionally energy stable. In addition, an optimal rate convergence analysis i…
It is difficult to design high order numerical schemes which could preserve both the maximum bound property (MBP) and energy dissipation law for certain phase field equations. Strong stability preserving (SSP) Runge-Kutta methods have been developed for numerical solution of hyperbolic partial differential equations in the past few decades, where strong stability means the non-increasing of the maximum bound of the underlying solutions. However, existing framework of SSP RK methods can not handle nonlinear stabilities like energy dissipation law. The aim of this work is to extend this SSP theo…
In this work, we present a second-order nonuniform time-stepping scheme for the time-fractional Allen-Cahn equation. We show that the proposed scheme preserves the discrete maximum principle, and by using the convolution structure of consistency error, we present sharp maximum-norm error estimates which reflect the temporal regularity. As our analysis is built on nonuniform time steps, we may resolve the intrinsic initial singularity by using the graded meshes. Moreover, we propose an adaptive time-stepping strategy for large time simulations. Numerical experiments are presented to show the ef…
In this paper, we study diagonal dominance of the stiffness matrix resulted from the piecewise linear finite element discretisation of the integral fractional Laplacian under global homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition in one spatial dimension. We first derive the exact form of this matrix in the frequency space which is extendable to multi-dimensional rectangular elements. Then we give the complete answer when the stiffness matrix can be strictly diagonally dominant. As one application, we apply this notion to the construction of maximum principle preserving schemes for the fractional-in-…
We develop and analyze a class of maximum bound preserving schemes for approximately solving Allen--Cahn equations. We apply a $k$th-order single-step scheme in time (where the nonlinear term is linearized by multi-step extrapolation), and a lumped mass finite element method in space with piecewise $r$th-order polynomials and Gauss--Lobatto quadrature. At each time level, a cut-off post-processing is proposed to eliminate extra values violating the maximum bound principle at the finite element nodal points. As a result, the numerical solution satisfies the maximum bound principle (at all nodal…
A new class of high-order maximum principle preserving numerical methods is proposed for solving parabolic equations, with application to the semilinear Allen--Cahn equation. The proposed method consists of a $k$th-order multistep exponential integrator in time, and a lumped mass finite element method in space with piecewise $r$th-order polynomials and Gauss--Lobatto quadrature. At every time level, the extra values violating the maximum principle are eliminated at the finite element nodal points by a cut-off operation. The remaining values at the nodal points satisfy the maximum principle and…
A large class of semilinear parabolic equations satisfy the maximum bound principle (MBP) in the sense that the time-dependent solution preserves for any time a uniform pointwise bound imposed by its initial and boundary conditions. Investigation on numerical schemes of these equations with preservation of the MBP has attracted increasingly attentions in recent years, especially for the temporal discretizations. In this paper, we study high-order MBP-preserving time integration schemes by means of the integrating factor Runge-Kutta (IFRK) method. Beginning with the space-discrete system of sem…
The shifted fractional trapezoidal rule (SFTR) with a special shift is adopted to construct a finite difference scheme for the time-fractional Allen-Cahn (tFAC) equation. Some essential key properties of the weights of SFTR are explored for the first time. Based on these properties, we rigorously demonstrate the discrete energy decay property and maximum-principle preservation for the scheme. Numerical investigations show that the scheme can resolve the intrinsic initial singularity of such nonlinear fractional equations as tFAC equation on uniform meshes without any correction. Comparison wit…
In this work, we investigate the two-step backward differentiation formula (BDF2) with nonuniform grids for the Allen-Cahn equation. We show that the nonuniform BDF2 scheme is energy stable under the time-step ratio restriction $r_k:=τ_k/τ_{k-1}<(3+\sqrt{17})/2\approx3.561.$ Moreover, by developing a novel kernel recombination and complementary technique, we show, for the first time, the discrete maximum principle of BDF2 scheme under the time-step ratio restriction $r_k<1+\sqrt{2}\approx 2.414$ and a practical time step constraint. The second-order rate of convergence in the maximum norm is a…
In a recent paper (see [7]), a quasi-nonlocal coupling method was introduced to seamlessly bridge a nonlocal diffusion model with the classical local diffusion counterpart in a one-dimensional space. The proposed coupling framework removes inconsistency on the interface, preserves the balance of fluxes, and satisfies the maximum principle of diffusion problem. However, the numerical scheme proposed in that paper does not maintain all of these properties on a discrete level. In this paper we resolve these issues by proposing a new finite difference scheme that ensures the balance of fluxes and …
Two fast L1 time-stepping methods, including the backward Euler and stabilized semi-implicit schemes, are suggested for the time-fractional Allen-Cahn equation with Caputo's derivative. The time mesh is refined near the initial time to resolve the intrinsically initial singularity of solution, and unequal time-steps are always incorporated into our approaches so that an adaptive time-stepping strategy can be used in long-time simulations. It is shown that the proposed schemes using the fast L1 formula preserve the discrete maximum principle. Sharp error estimates reflecting the time regularity…
It is well-known that the Allen-Cahn equation not only satisfies the energy dissipation law but also possesses the maximum bound principle (MBP) in the sense that the absolute value of its solution is pointwise bounded for all time by some specific constant under appropriate initial/boundary conditions. In recent years, the scalar auxiliary variable (SAV) method and many of its variants have attracted much attention in numerical solution for gradient flow problems due to their inherent advantage of preserving certain discrete analogues of the energy dissipation law. However, existing SAV schem…

In this paper, we propose and analyze a linear second-order numerical method for solving the Allen-Cahn equation with a general mobility. The proposed fully-discrete scheme is carefully constructed based on the combination of first and second-order backward differentiation formulas with nonuniform time steps for temporal approximation and the central finite difference for spatial discretization. The discrete maximum bound principle is proved of the proposed scheme by using the kernel recombination technique under certain mild constraints on the time steps and the ratios of adjacent time step s…
Derivation and Efficient Entropy-Production-Rate-Preserving Algorithms for a Thermodynamically Consistent Nonisothermal Model of Incompressible Binary Fluids
In this work, we propose a Crank-Nicolson-type scheme with variable steps for the time fractional Allen-Cahn equation. The proposed scheme is shown to be unconditionally stable (in a variational energy sense), and is maximum bound preserving. Interestingly, the discrete energy stability result obtained in this paper can recover the classical energy dissipation law when the fractional order $α\rightarrow 1.$ That is, our scheme can asymptotically preserve the energy dissipation law in the $α\rightarrow 1$ limit. This seems to be the first work on variable time-stepping scheme that can preserve …

We develop a set of numerical schemes for the Poisson--Nernst--Planck equations. We prove that our schemes are mass conservative, uniquely solvable and keep positivity unconditionally. Furthermore, the first-order scheme is proven to be unconditionally energy dissipative. These properties hold for various spatial discretizations. Numerical results are presented to validate these properties. Moreover, numerical results indicate that the second-order scheme is also energy dissipative, and both the first- and second-order schemes preserve the maximum principle for cases where the equation satisfi…
Maximum bound principle (MBP) is an important property for a large class of semilinear parabolic equations, in the sense that the time-dependent solution of the equation with appropriate initial and boundary conditions and nonlinear operator preserves for all time a uniform pointwise bound in absolute value. It has been a challenging problem on how to design unconditionally MBP-preserving high-order accurate time-stepping schemes for these equations. In this paper, we combine the integrating factor Runge-Kutta (IFRK) method with the linear stabilization technique to develop a stabilized IFRK (…
We develop a new finite volume method using unstructured mesh-vertex grids for coupled systems modeling shallow water flows and solute transport over complex bottom topography. Novel well-balanced positivity preserving discretization techniques are proposed for the water surface elevation and the concentration of the pollutant. For the hydrodynamic system, the proposed scheme preserves the steady state of a lake at rest and the positivity of the water depth. For the scalar transport equation, the proposed method guarantees the positivity and a perfect balance of the scalar concentration. The c…
We construct a new nonlinear finite volume (FV) scheme for highly anisotropic diffusion equations, that satisfies the discrete minimum-maximum principle. The construction relies on the linearized scheme satisfying less restrictive monotonicity conditions than those of an M-matrix, based on a weakly regular matrix splitting and using the Cartesian structure of the mesh (extension to quadrilateral meshes is also possible). The resulting scheme, obtained by expressing fluxes as nonlinear combinations of linear fluxes, has a larger stencil than other nonlinear positivity preserving or minimum-maxi…
