The fully-differential beam function (dBF) is a universal ingredient in resummed predictions of hadron collider observables that probe the full kinematics of the incoming parton from each colliding proton -- the virtuality and transverse momentum as well as the light-cone momentum fraction $x$. In this paper we compute the matching coefficients between the unpolarized gluon dBF and the usual parton distribution functions (PDFs) at the two-loop order. For observables probing both the virtuality and transverse momentum of incoming gluons, our results provide the part of the NNLO singular cross section related to collinear initial-state radiation, and are required for the resummation of large logarithms through N$^3$LL. Further to this, the dBF is closely linked to the beam function appearing in a generalized version of threshold factorization, via a simple integration. By performing this integration for the two-loop gluon matching coefficients, we also obtain the corresponding quantities for the generalized threshold beam function.
We discuss how the UN2LOPS scheme for matching NNLO calculations to parton showers can be applied to processes with large higher-order perturbative QCD corrections. We focus on Higgs-boson production through gluon fusion as an example. We also present an NNLO fixed-order event generator for this reaction.
We present results for the $Z$-boson and $W$-boson transverse momentum ($p_T$) distributions for large $p_T$ at LHC and Tevatron energies. We calculate complete next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD corrections as well as soft-gluon corrections at next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO) to the differential cross section. The NNLO soft-gluon contributions are derived from next-to-next-to-leading-logarithm (NNLL) resummation at two loops. We find enhancements of the $p_T$ distributions and reductions of the scale dependence when the NNLO corrections are included.
We present the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections to dijet production in the purely gluonic channel retaining the full dependence on the number of colours. The sub-leading colour contribution in this channel first appears at NNLO and, as expected, increases the NNLO correction by around 10% and exhibits a pT dependence, rising from 8% at low pT to 15% at high pT . The present calculation demonstrates the utility of the antenna subtraction method for computing the full colour NNLO corrections to dijet production at the Large Hadron Collider.
A next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD calculation of gluon distribution function at small-x is presented. The gluon distribution function is explored analytically in the DGLAP approach by a Taylor expansion at small x as two first order partial differential equations in two variables : Bjorken x and t (t = ln(Q2/Λ2) ). We have solved the system of equations at LO, NLO and NNLO respectively by the La- granges method. The resulting analytical expressions are compared with the available global PDF sets as well as with the results of the BDM model. We have further performed a \c{hi}2 test to …
We consider the effect of exact gluon kinematics in the virtual photon-gluon impact factor at small x. By comparing with fixed order DIS scheme splitting and coefficient functions, we show that the exact kinematics results match the fixed order results well at each order, which suggests that they allow for an accurate NLL analysis of proton structure functions. We also present, available for the first time, x-space parameterisations of the NNLO DGLAP splitting functions in the DIS scheme, and also the longitudinal coefficients for neutral current scattering.
We use the antenna subtraction method to isolate the double real radiation infrared singularities present in the six-gluon tree-level process at next-to-next-to-leading order. We show numerically that the subtraction term correctly approximates the matrix elements in the various single and double unresolved configurations.
We present an analytic three-loop result for the leading color contribution to the Higgs-gluon form factor in QCD. The leading color contribution is given at next-to-next-to-leading order by the $N_c^2$-term in QCD with $N_c$ colors. The main focus of this article lies on the evaluation of the relevant Feynman integrals with a special emphasis on the elliptic sector.
We compute the one-loop QCD amplitude for the process gg-->Q\bar{Q} in dimensional regularization through order ε^2 in the dimensional regulator and for arbitrary quark mass values. This result is an ingredient of the NNLO cross-section for heavy quark production at hadron colliders. The calculation is performed in conventional dimensional regularization, using well known reduction techniques as well as a method based on recent ideas for the functional form of one-loop integrands in four dimensions.
We present the O(alphas^4) virtual QCD corrections to gluon-gluon scattering due to the self-interference of the one-loop amplitude. We give analytic expressions renormalised in the MSbar scheme and work in conventional dimensional regularisation. We write the structure of the infrared divergences from direct Feynman diagram evaluation in terms of the Catani formalism for infrared divergences. Formulae for the finite remainder are given in terms of logarithms that are real in the physical region. These results, together with those previously obtained for quark-quark and quark-gluon scattering …
We consider QCD corrections to Higgs boson production through gluon-gluon fusion in hadron collisions. Using the recently evaluated two-loop amplitude for this process and the corresponding factorization formulae for soft-gluon bremsstrahlung at O(alpha_s^2), we compute the soft and virtual contributions to the NNLO cross section. We also discuss soft-gluon resummation at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. Numerical results for Higgs boson production at the LHC are presented.
We calculate the contribution of the partonic processes gg->WZ q\bar{q} and gg -> W gamma q\bar{q} to WZ and W gamma pair production at hadron colliders, including anomalous triple gauge-boson couplings. We use the helicity method and include the decay of the W and Z-boson into leptons in the narrow-width approximation. In order to integrate over the q\bar{q} final state phase space we use an extended version of the subtraction method to NNLO and remove collinear singularities explicitly. Due to the large gluon density at low x, the gluon induced terms of vector-boson pair production are expec…
Calculations of deep inelastic processes (DIS) to next-to-next to leading order are discussed. Fitting $ep$ experiment in the range $2.5\leq Q^2\leq 230 GeV^2$, we find the coupling $α_s(M_Z^2)=0.1163\pm0.0023$. We also get the gluon density $xG(x,Q^2\simeq 10 GeV^2)=0.51 x^{-0.44}(1-x)^{8.1}$, and negative evidence for the existence of light gluinos
We consider an extension of the Standard Model with an arbitrary number of heavy quarks having general couplings to the Higgs boson. We construct an effective Lagrangian integrating out quarks that are heavier than half the mass of the Higgs boson and compute the Wilson coefficient for the effective gluon-Higgs vertex through NNLO. We apply our result to a composite Higgs model with vector-like quarks coupling to the third generation quarks. In the heavy quark-mass approximation, we show that the suppression of the leading-order cross section with respect to the Standard Model does not depend …
In this talk we describe a procedure for isolating the infrared singularities present in gluonic scattering amplitudes at next-to-next-to-leading order. We use the antenna subtraction framework which has been successfully applied to the calculation of NNLO corrections to the 3-jet cross section and related event shape distributions in electron-positron annihilation. Here we consider processes with coloured particles in the initial state, and in particular two-jet production at hadron colliders such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We construct a subtraction term that describes the single an…
We calculate in this paper the perturbative gluon transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs) and fragmentation functions (TMDFFs) using the exponential regulator for rapidity divergences. We obtain results for both unpolarized and linearly polarized distributions through next-to-next-to leading order in strong coupling constant, and through ${\cal O}(ε^2)$ in dimensional regulator (finding discrepancy for the linearly polarized gluon TMDPDFs with a previous result in the literature). We find a nontrivial momentum conservation sum rule for the linearly polarized compo…
We use the antenna subtraction method to isolate the double real radiation infrared singularities present in gluonic scattering amplitudes at next-to-next-to-leading order. The antenna subtraction framework has been successfully applied to the calculation of NNLO corrections to the 3-jet cross section and related event shape distributions in electron-positron annihilation. Here we consider processes with two coloured particles in the initial state, and in particular two-jet production at hadron colliders such as the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We construct a subtraction term that describes th…
The evaluation of the top quark mass suppressed terms to the Higgs production cross section in gluon fusion at next-to-next-to-leading order is reported on. In the region below threshold, the Feynman diagrams are evaluated using asymptotic expansions. The result is then matched to the high-energy limit derived from kT factorization. The result shows that the heavy-top limit used so far approximates the full result to better than 1%.
We review the status of the calculation of the time-like splitting functions for the evolution of fragmentation functions to the next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. By employing relations between space-like and time-like deep-inelastic processes, all quark-quark and the gluon-gluon time-like splitting functions have been obtained to three loops. The corresponding quantities for the quark-gluon and gluon-quark splitting at this order are presently still unknown except for their second Mellin moments.
Effects from a finite top quark mass on the H+n-jet cross section through gluon fusion are studied for $n=0/n\ge 1$ at NNLO/NLO QCD. For this purpose, sub-leading terms in $1/m_t$ are calculated. We show that the asymptotic expansion of the jet-vetoed cross section at NNLO is very well behaved and that the heavy-top approximation is valid at the five permille level up to jet-veto cuts of 300 GeV. For the inclusive Higgs+jet rate, we introduce a matching procedure that allows for a reliable prediction of the top-mass effects using the expansion in $1/m_t$. The quality of the effective field the…
The resummation of threshold logarithms for direct photon production cross sections in hadronic collisions is presented. The resummation is based on the factorization properties of the cross section and is formulated at next-to-leading logarithmic or higher accuracy. Full analytical and numerical results for the next-to-next-to-leading order expansion of the resummed cross section are given. A substantial reduction of factorization scale dependence is observed. A comparison to experimental results from the E-706 and UA-6 experiments is presented.
We compute the soft and virtual NNLO QCD corrections to Higgs production through gluon-gluon fusion at hadron colliders. We present numerical results obtained at the LHC and at the Tevatron Run II.
We consider the Higgs boson production in the gluon-fusion channel to next-to-next-to-leading order within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. In particular, we present analytical results for the matching coefficient of the effective theory and study its influence on the total production cross section in the limit where the masses of all MSSM particles coincide. For supersymmetric masses below 500 GeV it is possible to find parameters leading to a significant enhancement of the Standard Model cross section, the $K$-factors, however, change only marginally.
We use the antenna subtraction method to isolate the infrared singularities present in QCD scattering amplitudes at next-to-next-to-leading order. In particular, infrared singularities due to double-real radiation and real-virtual radiation are subtracted from the QCD matrix elements using antenna functions which are then integrated analytically and added to the double-virtual contribution. Here we consider two-jet production at NNLO at hadron colliders and construct subtraction terms for the double-real and real-virtual channels that describe the single and double unresolved configurations of…
We consider Higgs boson production through gluon--gluon fusion in hadron collisions, when a veto is applied on the transverse momenta of the accompanying hard jets. We compute the QCD radiative corrections to this process at NLO and NNLO. The NLO calculation is complete. The NNLO calculation uses the recently evaluated NNLO soft and virtual QCD contributions to the inclusive cross section. We find that the jet veto reduces the impact of the NLO and NNLO contributions, the reduction being more sizeable at the LHC than at the Tevatron.
We construct an approximate expression for the cross section for Higgs production in gluon fusion at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) in $α_s$ with finite top mass. We argue that an accurate approximation can be constructed by exploiting the analiticity of the Mellin space cross section, and the information on its singularity structure coming from large N (soft gluon, Sudakov) and small N (high energy, BFKL) all order resummations. We support our argument with an explicit comparison of the approximate and the exact expressions up to the highest (NNLO) order at which the latter a…
In this work we have suggested a solution of the Gribov-Levin-Ryskin-Mueller-Qiu (GLR-MQ) nonlinear evolution equation at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). The range of $Q^2$ in which we have solved the GLR-MQ equation is Regge region of the range $5 GeV^2 \leq Q^2 \leq 25 GeV^2$ and so we have incorporated the Regge like behavior to obtain $Q^2$ evolution of gluon distribution function $G(x, Q^2)$. We have also checked the sensitivity of our results for different values of correlation radius (R) between two interacting gluons, viz. $R=2 GeV^{-1}$ and $R= 5 GeV^{-1}$ as well as for differe…
We present for first time the computation at large $q_T$ (or small $b_T$) matching coefficients of Transverse Momentum Dependent Parton Distribution Function (TMDPDF) for linearly polarised to the integrated gluon distribution at next-to-next-to leading order (NNLO). The computation is performed using the modified $δ$-regulator for rapidity divergences and dimensional regularization. This TMDPDF matriz element presnts phenomenological interest in two kind of processes. The factorization of the Higgs production transverse momentum ($q_T$) distribution through gluon-gluon fusion and the quarkoni…
We present the calculation of the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) zero-jettiness beam and soft functions, up to the second order in the expansion in the dimensional regularization parameter $ε$. These higher order terms are needed for the computation of the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) zero-jettiness soft and beam functions. As a byproduct, we confirm the $O(ε^0)$ results for NNLO beam and soft functions available in the literature.
We consider the formalism of small-x effective action for reggeized gluons, Gribov (Sov Phys JETP 26:414, 1968), Lipatov (Nucl Phys B 452:369, 1995; Phys Rep 286:131, 1997; Subnucl Ser 49:131, 2013, Int J Mod Phys Conf Ser 39:1560082, 2015; Int J Mod Phys A 31(28/29):1645011, 2016; EPJ Web Conf 125:01010, 2016) and Lipatov et al. (Sov J Nucl Phys 23:338, 1976; Sov Phys JETP 45:199, 1977; Sov J Nucl Phys 28:822, 1978), and, following to the approach developed in Bondarenko et al. (Eur Phys J C 77(8):527, 2017, Eur Phys J C 77(9):630, 2017), calculate the classical gluon field to NNLO precision …
We present an analytical calculation of the next-to-next-to-leading order corrections to the partial decay width $H\to gg$ for a Higgs boson in the intermediate mass range. We apply an asymptotic expansion for $M_H\ll 2M_t$ and compute three terms in the expansion. The leading term confirms the results present in the literature. It is argued that our result is equivalent to an exact calculation up to $M_H\approx M_t$. For a Higgs boson mass of 120 GeV the power-suppressed terms lead to corrections of about 9% in the next-to-next-to-leading order coefficient.
When an energetic parton propagates in a hot and dense QCD medium it loses energy by elastic scatterings or by medium-induced gluon radiation. The gluon radiation spectrum is suppressed at high frequency due to the LPM effect and encompasses two regimes that are known analytically: at high frequencies $ω>ω_c = \hat q L^2$, where $\hat q $ is the jet quenching transport coefficient and $L$ the length of the medium, the spectrum is dominated by a single hard scattering, whereas the regime $ω<ω_c$ is dominated by multiple low momentum transfers. In this paper, we extend a recent approach (dubbed …
We use the antenna subtraction method to isolate the double virtual infrared singularities present in gluonic scattering amplitudes at next-to-next-to-leading order. In previous papers, we derived the subtraction terms that rendered (a) the double real radiation tree-level process finite in the single and double unresolved regions of phase space and (b) the mixed single real radiation one-loop process both finite and well behaved in the unresolved regions of phase space. Here, we show how to construct the double virtual subtraction term using antenna functions with both initial- and final-stat…
We present a novel framework to streamline the calculation of jet and beam functions to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in perturbation theory. By exploiting the infrared behaviour of the collinear splitting functions, we factorise the singularities with suitable phase-space parametrisations and perform the observable-dependent integrations numerically. We have implemented our approach in the publicly available code {\tt pySecDec} and present first results for sample jet and beam functions.
We study in details the parameterizations of the nuclear parton distributions at the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) of $α_s$. In low $x$ and $Q_0^2$, we observe negative gluon distribution at this order which signals the saturation condition or the quark-gluon plasma condition. Our study also shows the gluon distribution at (NNLO) is less than next-to-leading order (NLO) of $α_s$, and the sea quark distribution at (NNLO) is larger than (NLO).
We present the first calculation of a fully-unintegrated parton distribution (beam function) at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). We obtain the fully-differential beam function for quark-initiated processes by matching it onto standard parton distribution functions (PDFs) at two loops. The fully-differential beam function is a universal ingredient in resummed predictions of observables probing both the virtuality as well as the transverse momentum of the incoming quark in addition to its usual longitudinal momentum fraction. For such double-differential observables our result provides the …
We report the calculation of next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections in the purely gluonic channel to dijet production and related observables at hadron colliders. Our result represents the first NNLO calculation of a massless jet observable at hadron colliders, and opens the path towards precision QCD phenomenology with the LHC.
We propose a more physical parameterization of the gluon distribution for global parton analyses of deep inelastic and related hard scattering data. In the new parameterization the gluon distribution at large x in the MSbar-scheme is driven by the valence quarks, which naturally produces a shoulder-like form at high x, and hence produces a better description of the Tevatron inclusive jet data. We perform the new analysis at both NLO and NNLO. The improvement is found to be even better at NNLO than at NLO. We make available the new sets of NLO and NNLO partons, which we denote by MRST2004.
We use the antenna subtraction method to isolate the mixed real-virtual infrared singularities present in gluonic scattering amplitudes at next-to-next-to-leading order. In a previous paper, we derived the subtraction term that rendered the double real radiation tree-level process finite in the single and double unresolved regions of phase space. Here, we show how to construct the real-virtual subtraction term using antenna functions with both initial- and final-state partons which removes the explicit infrared poles present in the one-loop amplitude, as well as the implicit singularities that…
The virtuality-dependent beam function is a universal ingredient in the resummation for observables probing the virtuality of incoming partons, including N-jettiness and beam thrust. We compute the gluon beam function at two-loop order. Together with our previous results for the two-loop quark beam function, this completes the full set of virtuality-dependent beam functions at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). Our results are required to account for all collinear ISR effects to the N-jettiness event shape through N^3LL order. We present numerical results for both the quark and gluon beam f…
We consider the quark beam function that describes collinear initial-state radiation that is constrained by a veto on reconstructed jets. As the veto is imposed on the transverse momenta of the jets, the beam function is subject to rapidity divergences, and we use the collinear-anomaly framework to extract the perturbative matching kernels to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in the strong-coupling expansion. Our calculation is based on a novel framework that automates the computation of beam functions in Mellin space and it provides the ingredients to extend jet-veto resummations for quark…
We present a set of formulas to extract two second-order independent differential equations for the gluon and singlet distribution functions. Our results extend from the LO up to NNLO DGLAP evolution equations with respect to the hard-Pomeron behavior at low-x. In this approach, both singlet quarks and gluons have the same high-energy behavior at low-x. We solve the independent DGLAP evolution equations for the functions $F^{s}_{2}(x,Q^{2})$ and $G(x,Q^{2})$ as a function of their initial parameterization at the starting scale $Q^{2}_{0}$ . The results not only give striking support to the har…
We consider extensions of the Standard Model with a number of additional heavy quarks which couple to the Higgs boson via top-like Yukawa interactions. We construct an effective theory valid for a Higgs boson mass which is lighter than twice the lightest heavy quark mass and compute the corresponding Wilson coefficient through NNLO. We present numerical results for the gluon fusion cross-section at the Tevatron for an extension of the Standard Model with a fourth generation of heavy quarks. The gluon fusion cross-section is enhanced by a factor of roughly 9 with respect to the Standard Model v…
We present an automated framework for the calculation of beam functions that describe collinear initial-state radiation at hadron colliders at next-to-next-to leading order (NNLO) in perturbation theory. By exploiting the infrared behaviour of the collinear matrix elements, we factorise the phase-space singularities with suitable observable-independent parametrisations. Our numerical approach applies to a large class of collider observables, and as a check of its validity, we compute the quark beam functions for transverse-momentum resummation and N-jettiness, which are known analytically at t…
Top-quark pair production at the LHC is directly sensitive to the gluon PDF at large x. While total cross-section data is already included in several PDF determinations, differential distributions are not, because the corresponding NNLO calculations have become available only recently. In this work we study the impact on the large-x gluon of top-quark pair differential distributions measured by ATLAS and CMS at $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV. Our analysis, performed in the NNPDF3.0 framework at NNLO accuracy, allows us to identify the optimal combination of LHC top-quark pair measurements that maximize the …
We construct an accurate approximation to the exact NNLO cross section for Higgs production in gluon-gluon fusion by matching the dominant finite top mass corrections recently computed by us to the known result in the infinite mass limit. The ensuing corrections to the partonic cross section are very large when the center of mass energy of the partonic collision is much larger than the Higgs mass, but lead to a moderate correction at the percent level to the total Higgs production cross section at the LHC. Our computation thus reduces the uncertainty related to these corrections at the LHC fro…
This article describes the code SusHi (for "Supersymmetric Higgs") which calculates the cross sections $pp/p\bar{p}\rightarrowϕ+X$ in gluon fusion and bottom-quark annihilation in the SM and the MSSM, where $ϕ$ is any of the neutral Higgs bosons within these models. Apart from inclusive cross sections up to NNLO QCD, differential cross sections with respect to the Higgs' transverse momentum $p_T$ and (pseudo-)rapidity $y(η)$ can be calculated through NLO QCD. In case of gluon fusion, SusHi contains NLO QCD contributions from the third family of quarks and squarks, NNLO corrections due to top-q…
We analyze, in the antenna subtraction framework, the real radiation antenna functions for processes involving the production of a pair of heavy quarks and two gluons by an uncolored initial state at NNLO QCD. We provide explicit expressions for these functions and discuss their infrared singular behaviour. Our main results are the corresponding integrated antenna functions which are computed analytically. They are expressed in terms of harmonic polylogarithms.
We consider the production of the Standard Model Higgs boson through the gluon fusion mechanism in hadron collisions. We present the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD result of the hard-collinear coefficient function for the all-order resummation of logarithmically-enhanced contributions at small transverse momentum. The coefficient function controls NNLO contributions in resummed calculations at full next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. The same coefficient function is used in applications of the subtraction method to perform fully-exclusive perturbative calculations up to NNL…
It is shown that the previously noted extreme perturbative NNLO/NLO instability of the longitudinal structure function F_L(x,Q^2) is a mere artefact of the commonly utilized `standard' gluon distributions. In particular it is demonstrated that using the appropriate -- dynamically generated -- parton distributions at NLO and NNLO, F_L(x,Q^2) turns out to be perturbatively rather stable already for Q^2 $\geq$ O(2-3 GeV^2).
Using the recently derived NNLO cross sections \cite{Czakon:2013goa}, we provide NNLO+NNLL theoretical predictions for top quark pair production based on all the available NNLO PDF sets, and compare them with the most precise LHC and Tevatron data. In this comparison we study in detail the PDF uncertainty and the scale, $m_t$ and $α_s$ dependence of the theoretical predictions for each PDF set. Next, we observe that top quark pair production provides a powerful direct constraint on the gluon PDF at large $x$, and include Tevatron and LHC top pair data consistently into a global NNLO PDF fit. W…
We compute the next-to-next-to-leading order QCD correction to the total inclusive top pair production cross-section in the reaction qg \to t\bar t + X. We find moderate O(1%) correction to central values at both Tevatron and LHC. The scale variation of the cross-section remains unchanged at the Tevatron and is significantly reduced at the LHC. We find that recently introduced approximation based on the high-energy limit of the top pair cross-section significantly deviates from the exact result. The results derived in the present work are included in version 1.4 of the program Top++. Work towa…
