Symmetries and the corresponding fields of differential invariants of the inviscid flows on a curve are given. Their dependence on thermodynamic states of media is studied, and a classification of thermodynamic states is given.
An explicit determination of all local conservation laws of kinematic type on moving domains and moving surfaces is presented for the Euler equations of inviscid compressible fluid flow on curved Riemannian manifolds in n>1 dimensions. All corresponding kinematic constants of motion are also determined, along with all Hamiltonian kinematic symmetries and kinematic Casimirs which arise from the Hamiltonian structure of the inviscid compressible fluid equations.
A recent paper considered symmetries and conservation laws of the plane one-dimensional flows for magnetohydrodynamics in the mass Lagrangian coordinates. This paper analyses the one-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics flows with cylindrical symmetry in the mass Lagrangian coordinates. The medium is assumed inviscid and thermally non-conducting. It is modeled by a polytropic gas. Symmetries and conservation laws are found. The cases of finite and infinite electric conductivity need to be analyzed separately. For finite electric conductivity $σ(ρ,p)$ we perform Lie group classification, which iden…
In this paper, we study Schrödinger equations on elliptic curves called generalized Lamé equations. We suggest a method of finding integrable potentials for Schrödinger type equations. We apply this method to the Lamé equations and provide a sequence of integrable potentials for which the eigenvalue problem is solved explicitly.
The paper considers the plane one-dimensional flows for magnetohydrodynamics in the mass Lagrangian coordinates. The inviscid, thermally non-conducting medium is modeled by a polytropic gas. The equations are examined for symmetries and conservation laws. For the case of the finite electric conductivity we establish Lie group classification, i.e. we describe all cases of the conductivity $ σ( ρ, p)$ for which there are symmetry extensions. The conservation laws are derived by the direct computation. For the case of the infinite electrical conductivity the equations can be brought into a variat…
Assume that arc length is measured with the flat spacetime metric. Then, for the most general Poincare group representation for translating 4-vectors, curves with parallel translated tangent vectors must have accelerations that are the scalar product of the tangent vector with an antisymmetric tensor. Such curves are the paths of charged particles in an electromagnetic field.
We study the stability of two-dimensional inviscid flows in an annulus between two porous cylinders with respect to three-dimensional perturbations. The basic flow is irrotational, and both radial and azimuthal components of the velocity are non-zero. The direction of the radial flow can be from the inner cylinder to the outer one (the diverging flow) or from the outer cylinder to the inner one (the converging flow). It had been shown earlier in Ref. \cite{IM2013a} that, independent of the direction of the radial flow, the basic flow can be unstable to small two-dimensional perturbations. In t…
We prove the existence of a subsonic axisymmetric weak solution $({\bf u},ρ,p)$ with ${\bf u}=u_x{\bf e}_x+u_r{\bf e}_r+u_θ{\bf e}_θ$ to steady Euler system in a three-dimensional infinitely long cylinder $\mathcal{N}$ when prescribing the values of the entropy $(=\frac{p}{ρ^γ})$ and angular momentum density $(=ru_θ)$ at the entrance by piecewise $C^2$ functions with a discontinuity on a curve on the entrance of $\mathcal{N}$. Due to the variable entropy and angular momentum density (=swirl) conditions with a discontinuity at the entrance, the corresponding solution has a nonzero vorticity, no…
We show that Novikov-Veselov hierarchy provides a complete family of commuting symmetries of two-dimensional $O(N)$ sigma model. In the first part of the paper we use these symmetries to prove that the Fermi spectral curve for the double-periodic sigma model is algebraic. Thus, our previous construction of the complexified harmonic maps in the case of irreducible Fermi curves is complete. In the second part of the paper we generalize our construction to the case of reducible Fermi curves and show that it gives the conformal harmonic maps to even-dimensional spheres. Remarkably, the solutions a…
Symmetries and differential invariants of viscid flows with viscosity depending on temperature on a space curve are given. Their dependence on thermodynamic states of media is studied, and a classification of thermodynamic states is given.
It has been shown that, for all dimensions and signatures, the most general first-order linear symmetry operators for the Dirac equation including interaction with Maxwell field in curved background are given in terms of Killing-Yano (KY) forms. As a general gauge invariant condition it is found that among all KY-forms of the underlying (pseudo) Riemannian manifold, only those which Clifford commute with the Maxwell field take part in the symmetry operator. It is also proved that associated with each KY-form taking part in the symmetry operator, one can define a quadratic function of velocitie…
A {\it Lie system} is a nonautonomous system of first-order differential equations admitting a {\it superposition rule}, i.e., a map expressing its general solution in terms of a generic family of particular solutions and some constants. Using that a Lie system can be considered as a curve in a finite-dimensional Lie algebra of vector fields, a so-called {\it Vessiot--Guldberg Lie algebra}, we associate every Lie system with a Lie algebra of Lie point symmetries induced by the Vessiot--Guldberg Lie algebra. This enables us to derive Lie symmetries of relevant physical systems described by firs…
In four spacetime dimensions, all ${\cal N} =1$ supergravity-matter systems can be formulated in the so-called $\mathsf{U}(1)$ superspace proposed by Howe in 1981. This paper is devoted to the study of those geometric structures which characterise a background $\mathsf{U}(1)$ superspace and are important in the context of supersymmetric field theory in curved space. We introduce (conformal) Killing tensor superfields $\ell_{(α_1 \dots α_m) ({\dot α}_1 \dots {\dot α}_n)}$, with $m$ and $n$ non-negative integers, $m+n>0$, and elaborate on their significance in the following cases: (i) $m=n=1$; (…
By giving an homology basis well adapted to the symmetries of Klein's curve, presented as a plane curve, we derive a new expression for its period matrix. This is explicitly related to the hyperbolic model and results of Rauch and Lewittes.
We study differential operators on an elliptic curve of order higher than 2 which are algebraically integrable (i.e., finite gap). We discuss classification of such operators of order 3 with one pole, discovering exotic operators on special elliptic curves defined over ${\mathbb Q}$ which do not deform to generic elliptic curves. We also study algebraically integrable operators of higher order with several poles and with symmetries, and (conjecturally) relate them to crystallographic elliptic Calogero-Moser systems (which is a generalization of the results of Airault, McKean, and Moser).
The Coleman-Mandula (CM) theorem states that the Poincaré and internal symmetries of a Minkowski spacetime quantum field theory cannot combine nontrivially in an extended symmetry group. We establish an analogous result for quantum field theory in curved spacetimes, assuming local covariance, the timeslice property, a local dynamical form of Lorentz invariance, and additivity. Unlike the CM theorem, our result is valid in dimensions $n\ge 2$ and for free or interacting theories. It is formulated for theories defined on a category of all globally hyperbolic spacetimes equipped with a global cof…
The mathematical structure of the Born-Infeld field equations was analyzed from the point of view of the symmetries. To this end, the field equations were written in the most compact form by means of quaternionic operators constructed according to all the symmetries of the theory, including the extension to a non-commutative structure. The quaternionic structure of the phase space was explicitly derived and described from the Hamiltonian point of view, and the analogy between the BI theory and the Maxwell (linear) electrodynamics in curved space-time was explicitly shown. Our results agree wit…
