We propose a low-scale renormalizable trinification theory that successfully explains the flavor hierarchies and neutrino puzzle in the Standard Model (SM), as well as provides a dark matter candidate and also contains the necessary means for efficient leptogenesis. The proposed theory is based on the trinification $\SU{3}{C}\times \SU{3}{L}\times \SU{3}{R}$ gauge symmetry, which is supplemented with an additional flavor symmetry $\U{X}\times Z_{2}^{(1)} \times Z_{2}^{(2)}$. In the proposed model the top quark and the exotic fermions acquire tree-level masses, whereas the lighter SM charged fermions gain masses radiatively at one-loop level. In addition, the light active neutrino masses arise from a combination of radiative and type-I seesaw mechanisms, with the Dirac neutrino mass matrix generated at one-loop level.
A unification of left-right $\rm{SU}(3)_\rm{L}\times \rm{SU}(3)_\rm{R}$, colour $\rm{SU}(3)_\rm{C}$ and family $\rm{SU}(3)_\rm{F}$ symmetries in a maximal rank-8 subgroup of ${\rm{E}}_8$ is proposed as a landmark for future explorations beyond the Standard Model (SM). We discuss the implications of this scheme in a supersymmetric (SUSY) model based on the trinification gauge $\left[\rm{SU}(3)\right]^3$ and global $\rm{SU}(3)_\rm{F}$ family symmetries. Among the key properties of this model are the unification of SM Higgs and lepton sectors, a common Yukawa coupling for chiral fermions, the abs…
Leptogenesis in a left-right symmetric model is investigated for all possible neutrino mass hierarchies. The predictions of the model for low energy parameters as measured in neutrinoless double beta decay and in oscillation experiments are compared. The preferred values of the Majorana phases and limits on the smallest mass state are given. The main observation is that for the inverse hierarchy observable CP violation in oscillation experiments as well as a sizable signal in neutrinoless double beta decay can be expected. In a degenerate scheme, one Majorana phase is bounded to be around pi/2…
The trinification grand unified theory (GUT) has gauge group SU(3)^3 and a discrete symmetry permuting the SU(3) factors. In common with other GUTs, the attractive nature of the fermionic multiplet assignments is obviated by the complicated multi-parameter Higgs potential apparently needed for phenomenological reasons, and also by vacuum expectation value (VEV) hierarchies within a given multiplet. This motivates the rigorous consideration of Higgs potentials, symmetry breaking patterns and alternative symmetry breaking mechanisms in models with this gauge group. Specifically, we study the rec…
We present a supersymmetric (SUSY) model based on trinification $[\mathrm{SU}(3)]^3$ and family $\mathrm{SU}(3)_\mathrm{F}$ symmetries embedded into a maximal subgroup of $\mathrm{E}_8$, where the sectors of light Higgs bosons and leptons are unified into a single chiral supermultiplet. The common origin of gauge trinification and of the family symmetry from $\mathrm{E}_8$ separates the model from other trinification-based GUTs, as it protects, in particular, the Standard Model fermions from gaining mass until the electroweak symmetry is broken. Furthermore, it allows us to break the trinifica…
We study a leptogenesis via decays of heavy Majorana neutrinos produced non-thermally in inflaton decays. We find that this scenario is fully consistent with existing supersymmetric inflation models such as for topological or for hybrid inflation and the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism generating hierarchies in quark and lepton mass matrices. The reheating temperature $T_R$ of inflation may be taken as low as $T_R \simeq 10^8$ GeV to avoid the cosmological gravitino problem.
We study the impact on leptogenesis of Higgs portal couplings to a new scalar singlet. These couplings open up additional $CP$-violating decay channels for the higher mass singlet neutrinos $N_2$ and $N_3$. We analyze the simplest case of two-level $N_1-N_2$ leptogenesis, including significant mass hierarchies, in which the $CP$ asymmetry is generated in part by singlet-mediated decays of $N_2$. For these models, provided the lightest singlet neutrino $N_1$ is sufficiently weakly coupled to avoid excessive washout, its mass scale is not directly constrained by the Davidson-Ibarra bound.
In SO(10) models with a vectorial fourth generation of down quarks and leptons, the structure of the neutrino Majorana and Dirac mass matrices generically coincide with those of up- and down-quarks, respectively. Then the small neutrino mass hierarchy follows from the mismatch of the up and down quark mass hierarchies and we can accommodate naturally a normal hierarchy. The effective CP violating phases in the quark sector, neutrino oscillations and leptogenesis are unrelated.
Properties of neutrinos may be the origin of the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe. In the seesaw model for neutrino masses this leads to important constraints on the properties of light and heavy neutrinos. In particular, an upper bound on the light neutrino masses of 0.1 eV can be derived. We review the present status of thermal leptogenesis with emphasis on the theoretical uncertainties and discuss some implications for lepton and quark mass hierarchies, CP violation and dark matter. We also comment on the `leptogenesis conspiracy', the remarkable fact that neutrino masses may lie…
In this work we study examples of hierarchical neutrino mass matrices inspired by family symmetries, compatible with experiments on neutrino oscillations, and for which there is a connection among the low energy CP violation phase associated to neutrino oscillations, the phases appearing in the amplitude of neutrinoless double beta decay, and the phases relevant for leptogenesis. In particular, we determine the predictions from a texture based on an underlying SU(3) family symmetry together with a GUT symmetry, and a strong hierarchy for the masses of the heavy right handed Majorana masses. We…
We study the consequences of the $Z_2$-symmetry behind the $μ$--$τ$ universality in neutrino mass matrix. We then implement this symmetry in the type-I seesaw mechanism and show how it can accommodate all sorts of lepton mass hierarchies and generate enough lepton asymmetry to interpret the observed baryon asymmetry in the universe. We also show how a specific form of a high-scale perturbation is kept when translated via the seesaw into the low scale domain, where it can accommodate the neutrino mixing data. We finally present a realization of the high scale perturbed texture through addition …
We study how leptogenesis can be implemented in a seesaw model with $S_4$ flavor symmetry, which leads to the neutrino tri-bimaximal mixing matrix and degenerate right-handed (RH) neutrino spectrum. Introducing a tiny soft $S_4$ symmetry breaking term in the RH neutrino mass matrix, we show that the flavored resonant leptogenesis can be successfully realized, which can lower the seesaw scale much so as to make it possible to probe in colliders. Even though such a tiny soft breaking term is essential for leptogenesis, it does not significantly affect the low energy observables. We also investig…
We discuss non-perturbative corrections to the neutrino sector, in the context of a D-brane Pati-Salam-like model, that can be obtained as a simple alternative to $SO(10)$ GUT's in theories with open and unoriented strings. In such D-brane models, exotic stringy instantons can correct the right-handed neutrino mass matrix in a calculable way, thus affecting mass hierarchies and modifying the see-saw mechanism to what we name exotic see-saw. For a wide range of parameters, a compact spectrum of right-handed neutrino masses can occur that gives rise to a predictive scenario for low energy observ…
If the expectation value of the right-handed (rhd) sneutrino comes to dominate the universe, its decay naturally leads to successful leptogenesis, as well as significant dilution of dangerous inflationary relics, such as the gravitino. The resulting baryon asymmetry is independent of other cosmological initial conditions. This attractive variant of leptogenesis requires at least one of the rhd neutrinos to have small Yukawa coupling and to have mass ~ 10^6 GeV, much smaller than the grand unified (GUT) scale. We show that these features naturally arise in the context of independently motivated…
We study the connection between quark and lepton mass matrices in a supersymmetric SO(10) GUT model in six dimensions, compactified on an orbifold. The physical quarks and leptons are mixtures of brane and bulk states. This leads to a characteristic pattern of mass matrices and high-energy CP violating phases. The hierarchy of up and down quark masses determines the CKM matrix and most charged lepton and neutrino masses and mixings. The small hierarchy of neutrino masses is a consequence of the mismatch of the up and down quark mass hierarchies. The effective CP violating phases in the quark s…
We consider a model with three right-handed neutrinos in which Yukawa coupling constants and Majorana masses are obtained by requiring the modular $A_4$ symmetry. It has been shown that the model can explain mass hierarchies and mixing patterns of charged leptons and neutrinos with the seesaw mechanism. In this article we investigate the leptogenesis by decays of right-handed neutrinos in this model. It is shown that masses of right-handed neutrinos are about $10^{13}$ GeV in order to account for the observed baryon asymmetry of the universe. Furthermore, the positive sign of the baryon asymme…
The appealing feature of inverse seesaw models is that the Standard Model (SM) neutrino mass emerges from the exchange of TeV scale singlets with sizable Yukawa couplings, which can be tested at colliders. However, the tiny Majorana mass splitting between TeV singlets, introduced to accommodate small neutrino masses, is left unexplained. Moreover, we argue that these models suffer from a structural limitation that prevents a successful leptogenesis if one insists on having unsuppressed Yukawa couplings and TeV scale singlets. In this work we propose a hybrid seesaw model, where we replace the …
In this paper, we consider a lopsided flavor texture compatible with thermal leptogenesis in partially composite Pati--Salam unification. The Davidson--Ibarra bound $M_{νR1} \gtrsim 10^9$ GeV for the successful thermal leptogenesis can be recast to the Froggatt--Nielsen (FN) charge of the lopsided texture. We found the FN charge $n_{\nu1}$ of the lightest right-handed neutrino $ν_{R1}$ can not be larger than a upper bound, $n_{\nu1} \lesssim 4.5$. From the viewpoint of unification, the FN charges of the neutrinos $n_{νi}$ should be the same to that of other SM fermions. Then, two cases $n_{νi}…
In this work we study a predictive model based on a partially unified theory possessing the gauge symmetry of the Pati-Salam group, $SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R\times SU(4)_C$ supplemented by a global Peccei-Quinn symmetry, $U(1)_{PQ}$. A comprehensive analysis of the Higgs potential is carried out in a minimal set-up. The assumed Peccei-Quinn symmetry along with solving the strong CP problem, can provide axion as the dark matter candidate. This minimal set-up with limited number of Yukawa parameters can successfully incorporate the hierarchies in the charged fermion masses and mixings. The automati…
We investigate the lepton flavor violating (LFV) rare decays in the supersymmetric minimal seesaw model in which the Frampton-Glashow-Yanagida ansatz is incorporated. The branching ratio of $μ\to e γ$ is calculated in terms of the Snowmass Points and Slopes (SPS). We find that the inverted mass hierarchy is disfavored by all SPS points. In addition, once the ratio of BR$(τ\to μγ)$ to BR$(μ\to e γ)$ is measured, one may distinguish the normal and inverted neutrino mass hierarchies, and confirm the masses of heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos by means of the LFV processes and the thermal lept…
The recent measurement of a non-zero neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$ requires a modification of the tri-bimaximal mixing pattern that predicts a zero value for it. We propose a new neutrino mixing pattern based on a spontaneously-broken $A_{4}$ flavor symmetry and a type-I seesaw mechanism. Our model allows for approximate tri-bimaximal mixing and non-zero $θ_{13}$, and contains a natural way to implement low and high energy CP violation in neutrino oscillations, and leptogenesis with a renormalizable Lagrangian. Both normal and inverted mass hierarchies are permitted within $3σ$ experimental b…
Given the tremendous phenomenological success of the Standard Model (SM) framework, it becomes increasingly important to understand to what extent its specific structure dynamically emerges from unification principles. In this study, we present a novel anomaly-free supersymmetric (SUSY) Grand Unification model based upon gauge trinification $[\mathrm{SU}(3)]^3$ symmetry and a local $\mathrm{SU}(2)_{\mathrm{F}} \times \mathrm{U}(1)_{\mathrm{F}}$ family symmetry, with particle spectra and gauge symmetries inspired by a possible reduction pattern $\mathrm{E}_8 \to \mathrm{E}_6\times \mathrm{SU}(2…
We propose a new mechanism in which the generation of the supersymmetric $μ$-term as well charged lepton masses is closely tied to R-parity violation involving heavy vector-like families . A realistic example based on $SU(3)_c\times SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y$, supplemented by the symmetry ${\cal R}\times {\cal U}(1)$, is presented, where ${\cal R}$ (${\cal U}(1)$) denotes a continuous $R$ (flavor) symmetry. In addition to the $μ$-term, the charged fermion mass hierarchies and mixings, as well as baryon number conservation are also nicely explained. Bilinear R-parity violating coupling involving the…
The flavour puzzle is an open problem both in the Standard Model and in its possible supersymmetric or grand unified extensions. In this thesis, we discuss possible explanations of the origin of fermion mass hierarchies and mixings by the use of non-Abelian discrete flavour symmetries. We present a T'- and an S4-based realisations in which the spontaneous breaking of the symmetry produces realistic fermion mass hierarchies, the quark mixing matrix comparable to the Wolfenstein parametrisation and the lepton mixing matrix close to the so-called tribimaximal pattern. We also present an alternati…
In view of the recent neutrino oscillation data pointing to a non-vanishing value for the smallest mixing angle ($θ_z$), we derive and find explicit realizations of the $(Z_2)^3$ flavor symmetry which characterizes, for the neutrino mass matrix, uniquely a variant of the tripartite form, originally conceived to lead to the tri-bimaximal mixing with $θ_z=0$, so that to allow now for a non-tri-bimaximal pattern with non-zero $θ_z$. We impose this flavor symmetry in a setting including the charged leptons and we see that it can make room, through higher order terms involving new SM-singlet scalar…
