In recent theoretical and experimental investigations, researchers have linked the low-energy field theory of a Weyl semimetal gapped with a charge-density wave (CDW) to high-energy theories with axion electrodynamics. However, it remains an open question whether a lattice regularization of the dynamical Weyl-CDW is in fact a single-particle axion insulator (AXI). In this Letter, we use analytic and numerical methods to study both lattice-commensurate and incommensurate minimal (magnetic) Weyl-CDW phases in the mean-field state. We observe that, as previously predicted from field theory, the two inversion- ($\mathcal{I}$-) symmetric Weyl-CDWs with $ϕ= 0,π$ differ by a topological axion angle $δθ_ϕ=π$. However, we crucially discover that $neither$ of the minimal Weyl-CDW phases at $ϕ=0,π$ is individually an AXI; they are instead quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) and "obstructed" QAH insulators that differ by a fractional translation in the modulated cell, analogous to the two phases of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model of polyacetylene. Using symmetry indicators of band topology and non-abelian Berry phase, we demonstrate that our results generalize to multi-band systems with only two Weyl fermions, establishing that minimal Weyl-CDWs unavoidably carry nontrivial Chern numbers that prevent the observation of a static magnetoelectric response. We discuss the experimental implications of our findings, and provide models and analysis generalizing our results to nonmagnetic Weyl- and Dirac-CDWs.
An axion insulator is a correlated topological phase, predicted to arise from the formation of a charge density wave in a Weyl semimetal. The accompanying sliding mode in the charge density wave phase, the phason, is an axion. It is expected to cause anomalous magneto-electric transport effects. However, this axionic charge density wave has so far eluded experimental detection. In this paper, we report the observation of a large, positive contribution to the magneto-conductance in the sliding mode of the charge density wave Weyl semimetal (TaSe4)2I for collinear electric and magnetic fields (E…
From a direct calculation of the anomalous Hall conductivity and an effective electromagnetic action obtained via Fujikawa's chiral rotation technique, we conclude that an axionic field theory with a non-quantized coefficient describes the electromagnetic response of the $(3+1)$-dimensional Weyl semi-metal. The coefficient is proportional to the momentum space separation of the Weyl nodes. Akin to the Chern-Simons field theory of quantum Hall effect, the axion field theory violates gauge invariance in the presence of the boundary, which is cured by the chiral anomaly of the surface states via …
Three-dimensional Weyl and Dirac semimetals can support a chiral-symmetry-breaking, fully gapped, charge-density-wave order even for sufficiently weak repulsive electron-electron interactions, when placed in strong magnetic fields. In the former systems, due to the natural momentum space separation of Weyl nodes the ordered phase lacks the translational symmetry and represents an axionic phase of matter, while that in a Dirac semimetal (neglecting the Zeeman coupling) is only a trivial insulator. We present the scaling of this spectral gap for a wide range of subcritical (weak) interactions as…
Charge-density waves (CDWs) in Weyl semimetals (WSMs) have been shown to induce an exotic axionic insulating phase in which the sliding mode (phason) of the CDW acts as a dynamical axion field, giving rise to a large positive magneto-conductance [Wang et al., Phys. Rev. B 87, 161107(R) (2013); Roy et al., Phys. Rev. B 92, 125141 (2015); J. Gooth et al., Nature 575, 315 (2019)]. In this work, we predict that dynamical strain can induce a bulk orbital magnetization in time-reversal- (TR-) invariant WSMs that are gapped by a CDW. We term this effect the "dynamical piezomagnetic effect" (DPME). Un…
The Weyl semimetal MoTe$_2$ offers a rare opportunity to study the interplay between Weyl physics and superconductivity. Recent studies have found that Se substitution can boost the superconductivity up to 1.5K, but suppress the Td structure phase that is essential for the emergence of Weyl state. A microscopic understanding of possible coexistence of enhanced superconductivity and the Td phase has not been established so far. Here, we use scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to study a optimally doped new superconductor MoTe$_{1.85}$Se$_{0.15}$ with bulk Tc ~ 1.5K. By means of quasiparticle in…
We study a Josephson junction involving an inversion-asymmetric Weyl semimetal in presence of time-reversal symmetric (TRS) or time-reversal symmetry broken tilt in the Weyl spectra. We reveal that both types of tilts in the Weyl nodes lead to a Josephson $0$-$π$ transition and a zero bias valley/chiral supercurrent. Strikingly, the TRS tilt gives rise to a pure valley Josephson current (VJC) and TRS broken tilt induces a pure chirality Josephson current (CJC) in this system. The VJC and CJC are the manifestation of valley symmetry broken and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry broken by the respective ti…
Second harmonic generation (SHG) is a fundamental nonlinear optical phenomenon widely used both for experimental probes of materials and for application to optical devices. Even-order nonlinear optical responses including SHG generally require breaking of inversion symmetry, and thus have been utilized to study noncentrosymmetric materials. Here, we study theoretically the SHG in inversion-symmetric Dirac and Weyl semimetals under a DC current which breaks the inversion symmetry by creating a nonequilibrium steady state. Based on analytic and numerical calculations, we find that Dirac and Weyl…
We show that compounds in a family that possess time-reversal symmetry and share a non-centrosymmetric cubic structure with the space group F-43m (No. 216) host robust ideal Weyl semi-metal fermions with desirable topologically protected features. The candidates in this family are compounds with different chemical formulas AB2, ABC, ABC2, and ABCD and their Fermi levels are predominantly populated by nontrivial Weyl fermions. Symmetry of the system requires that the Weyl nodes with opposite chirality are well separated in momentum space. Adjacent Weyl points have the same chirality, thus these…
We consider a Weyl semimetal (WSM) with finite doping and tilt within a continuum model Hamiltonian with both broken time reversal and inversion symmetry. We calculate the absorptive part of the anomalous AC Hall conductivity as a function of photon energy ($Ω$) for both type I and type II Weyl semimetal. For a given Weyl node, changing the sign of its chirality or of its tilt changes the sign of its contribution to the absorptive Hall conductivity with no change in magnitude. For a noncentrosymmetric system we find that there are ranges of photon energies for which only the positive or only t…
The recent explosion of research interest in Weyl semimetals has led to many proposed Weyl semimetal candidates and a few experimental observations of a Weyl semimetal in real materials. Through this experience, we have come to appreciate that typical Weyl semimetals host many Weyl points. For instance, the first Weyl semimetal observed in experiment, TaAs, hosts 24 Weyl points. Similarly, the Mo$_x$W$_{1-x}$Te$_2$ series, recently under study as the first Type II Weyl semimetal, has eight Weyl points. However, it is well-understood that for a Weyl semimetal without inversion symmetry but with…
Weyl fermions can be created in materials with both time reversal and inversion symmetry by applying a magnetic field, as evidenced by recent measurements of anomalous negative magnetoresistance. Here, we do a thorough analysis of the Weyl points in these materials: by enforcing crystal symmetries, we classify the location and monopole charges of Weyl points created by fields aligned with high-symmetry axes. The analysis applies generally to materials with band inversion in the $T_d$, $D_{4h}$ and $D_{6h}$ point groups. For the $T_d$ point group, we find that Weyl nodes persist for all directi…
Band inversions are key to stabilising a variety of novel electronic states in solids, from topological surface states in inverted bulk band gaps of topological insulators to the formation of symmetry-protected three-dimensional Dirac and Weyl points and nodal-line semimetals. Here, we create a band inversion not of bulk states, but rather between manifolds of surface states. We realise this by aliovalent substitution of Nb for Zr and Sb for S in the ZrSiS family of nonsymmorphic semimetals. Using angle-resolved photoemission and density-functional theory, we show how two pairs of surface stat…
Weyl semimetal TaAs, a congenial host to the massless Weyl fermions, spontaneously lacks the time-reversal and the inversion symmetry and thus effectuates topologically stable Weyl nodes, resembling magnetic monopoles in momentum space. Former experimental analysis had revealed that the near-zero spin-polarization of bulk TaAs experiences a boost in presence of point-contacts of non-magnetic metals along with the associated phenomena of tip-induced superconductivity, providing the impetus to study the large-area stacked interfaces of TaAs with Noble metals like Au and Ag. First-principles calc…
We study a topological phase transition between a normal insulator and a quantum spin Hall insulator in two-dimensional (2D) systems with time-reversal and two-fold rotation symmetries. Contrary to the case of ordinary time-reversal invariant systems where a direct transition between two insulators is generally predicted, we find that the topological phase transition in systems with an additional two-fold rotation symmetry is mediated by an emergent stable two-dimensional Weyl semimetal phase between two insulators. Here the central role is played by the so-called space-time inversion symmetry…
Three-dimensional topological gapless phases have attracted significant attention due to their unique electronic properties. A flagship example are Weyl semimetals, which require breaking time-reversal or inversion symmetry. In two dimensions, the dimensionality reduction requires imposing an additional symmetry, thereby weakening the phase. Like its three-dimensional counterpart, these two-dimensional Weyl semimetals present edge states directly related to Weyl nodes. The direct comparison with the edge states in zigzag-like terminated graphene ribbons is unavoidable, offering the question of…
We study the stability of gap-closing (Weyl or Dirac) points in the three-dimensional Brillouin zone of semimetals using Clifford algebras and their representation theory. We show that a pair of Weyl points with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological charge are stable in a semimetal with time-reversal and reflection symmetries when the square of the product of the two symmetry transformations equals minus identity. We present toy models of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ Weyl semimetals which have surface modes forming helical Fermi arcs. We also show that Dirac points with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological charge are stable in …
We study the electronic properties of strongly spin-orbit coupled electrons on the elastic pyrochlore lattice. Akin to the Peierls transition in one-dimensional systems, the coupling of the lattice to the electronic degrees of freedom can stabilize a spontaneous deformation of the crystal. This deformation corresponds to a breathing mode, which breaks the inversion symmetry. We find that for intermediate values of the staggered strain, the inversion-symmetry broken phase realizes a topological Weyl semimetal. In the temperature-elasticity phase diagram, the Weyl semimetal shows a reentrant pha…
Weyl semimetal is a new topological state of matter, characterized by the presence of nondegenerate band-touching nodes, separated in momentum space, in its bandstructure. Here we discuss a particular realization of a Weyl semimetal: a superlattice heterostructure, made of alternating layers of topological insulator (TI) and normal insulator (NI) material, introduced by one of us before. The Weyl node splitting is achieved most easily in this system by breaking time-reversal (TR) symmetry, for example by magnetic doping. If, however, spatial inversion (I) symmetry remains, the Weyl nodes will …
Weyl semimetals are gapless topological states of matter with broken inversion and/or time reversal symmetry, which can support unconventional responses to externally applied electrical, optical and magnetic fields. Here we report a new photogalvanic effect in type-II WSMs, MoTe2 and Mo0.9W0.1Te2, which are observed to support a circulating photocurrent when illuminated by circularly polarized light at normal incidence. This effect occurs exclusively in the inversion broken phase, where crucially we find that it is associated with a spatially varying beam profile via a new dispersive contribut…
We study theoretically the superconductivity in doped Weyl semimetals with an inversion symmetry based on the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. In principle, the two superconducting states, i.e., the zero momentum BCS-like pairing and the finite momentum Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) pairing are competing in this kind of systems. Our self-consistent calculation indicates that the BCS-type state may be the ground state. The competition between these two pairing states is studied in detail through normal state Fermi surface and the finite energy spectral functions. Generally, the Fermi s…
We synthesized distorted octahedral(T') molybdenum ditelluride (MoTe2) and investigated its vibrational properties with Raman spectroscopy, density functional theory and symmetry analysis. Compared to the results from high temperature centrosymmetric monoclinic (T'mo) phase, four new Raman bands emerge in the low temperature orthorhombic (T'or) phase, which was recently predicted to be a type II Weyl semimetal. Crystal-angle-dependent, light-polarization-resolved measurements indicate that all the observed Raman peaks belong to two categories: those vibrating along the zigzag Mo atomic chain (…
We propose that the noncentrosymmetric LiGaGe-type hexagonal $ABC$ crystal SrHgPb realizes a new type of topological semimetal that hosts both Dirac and Weyl points in momentum space. The symmetry-protected Dirac points arise due to a band inversion and are located on the sixfold rotation $z$-axis, whereas the six pairs of Weyl points related by sixfold symmetry are located on the perpendicular $k_z=0$ plane. By studying the electronic structure as a function of the buckling of the HgPb layer, which is the origin of inversion symmetry breaking, we establish that the coexistence of Dirac and We…
We study the dynamic chiral magnetic conductivity (DCMC) and natural optical activity in an inversion-broken tilted Weyl semimetal (WSM). Starting from the Kubo formula, we derive the analytical expressions for the DCMC for two different directions of the incident electromagnetic wave. We show that the angle of rotation of the plane of polarization of the transmitted wave exhibits remarkable anisotropic behavior and is larger along the tilt direction. This striking anisotropy of DCMC which results in anisotropic optical activity and rotary power, can be experimentally observed as a topological…
The topological nature of the band structure of a Weyl semimetal leads to a number of unique transport and optical properties. For example, the description of the propagation of an electromagnetic wave in a Weyl semimetal with broken time-reversal and inversion symmetry, for example, requires a modification of the Maxwell equations by the axion field $θ\left( \mathbf{r},t\right) =2\mathbf{b}\cdot \mathbf{r}-2b_{0}t,$ where $2% \mathbf{b}$ is the separation in wave vector space between two Weyl nodes of opposite chiralities and $2\hslash b_{0}$ is their separation in energy. In this paper, we s…
The generation of photocurrent in an ideal two-dimensional Dirac spectrum is symmetry-forbidden. In sharp contrast, we show that three-dimensional Weyl semimetals can generically support significant photocurrent generations due to the combination of inversion symmetry breaking and finite tilts of the Weyl spectra. Symmetry properties, chirality relations and various dependences on the system and light sources are explored in details. Our results suggest that noncentrosymmetric Weyl materials can be advantageously applied to room temperature detections of mid- and far-infrared radiations.
A developing frontier in condensed matter physics is the emergence of novel electromagnetic responses, such as topological and anomalous Hall effect (AHE), in ferromagnetic Weyl semimetals (FM-WSMs). Candidates of FM-WSM are limited to materials that preserve inversion symmetry and generate Weyl crossings by breaking time-reversal symmetry. These materials share three common features: a centrosymmetric lattice, a collinear FM ordering, and a large AHE observed when the field is parallel to the magnetic easy-axis. Here, we present CeAlSi as a new type of FM-WSM, where the Weyl nodes are stabili…
We develop a theory for the nonlinear time domain response of a Weyl semimetal driven by an ultrafast optical pulse. At quadratic order in the driving field we find that the response near a band inversion transition contains a coherent oscillating component proportional field intensity and with a frequency that can be tuned over a wide range (from THz to the near IR) selected by the chemical potential. We illustrate the effect by calculating the induced current as a function of time for a model of a parity broken Weyl semimetal where large Berry curvature near the band inversion transition pro…
We theoretically analyze the effect of the inversion symmetry breaking on the structure of the impurity molecular states in Weyl metals. We show that for the case of a highly noncentrosymmetric Weyl metallic host, the standard picture of the alternating bonding and antibonding orbitals breaks down, and a qualitatively different frustrated atomic state emerges. This is a consequence of the pseudogap closing and related delicate Fano interplay between intra- and inter-impurity scattering channels.
We present microwave experiments on the symmetry reduced 5-disk billiard studying the transition from a closed to an open system. The measured microwave reflection signal is analyzed by means of the harmonic inversion and the counting function of the resulting resonances is studied. For the closed system this counting function shows the Weyl asymptotic with a leading exponent equal to 2. By opening the system successively this exponent decreases smoothly to an non-integer value. For the open systems the extraction of resonances by the harmonic inversion becomes more challenging and the arising…
Unconventional superconductivity has been predicted to arise in the topologically non-trivial Fermi surface of doped inversion symmetric Weyl semimetals (WSM). In particular, Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) and nodal BCS states are theoretically predicted to be possible superconductor pairing states in inversion symmetric doped WSM. In an effort to resolve preferred pairing state, we theoretically study two separate four terminal quantum transport methods that each exhibit a unique electrical signature in the presence of FFLO and nodal BCS states in doped WSMs. We first introduce a Jos…
Type-II Weyl fermion nodes, located at the touching points between electron and hole pockets, have been recently predicted to occur in distorted octahedral ($T'$) transition metal dichalcogenide semimetals, contingent upon the condition that the layered crystal has the noncentrosymmetric orthorhombic ($T'_{or}$) stacking. Here, we report on the emergence of two shear Raman bands activated by inversion symmetry breaking in $T'$-MoTe$_2$ due to sample cooling. Polarization and crystal orientation resolved measurements further point to a phase transition from the monoclinic ($T'_{mo}$) structure …
We study superconducting states of doped inversion-symmetric Weyl semimetals. Specifically, we consider a lattice model realizing a Weyl semimetal with an inversion symmetry and study the superconducting instability in the presence of a short-ranged attractive interaction. With a phonon-mediated attractive interaction, we find two competing states: a fully gapped finite-momentum (FFLO) pairing state and a nodal even-parity pairing state. We show that, in a BCS-type approximation, the finite-momentum pairing state is energetically favored over the usual even-parity paired state and is robust ag…
Topological band theory has revolutionized our understanding of electronic structure of materials, in particular, a novel state - Weyl semimetal - has been predicted for systems with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Here, a new class of Weyl semimetals, solely made of light elements with negligible SOC, is proposed. Our first-principles calculations show that conjugated p orbital interactions in a three-dimensional pure carbon network, termed interpenetrated graphene network, is sufficient to produce the same Weyl physics. This carbon allotrope has an exceptionally good structural stability. …
The Luttinger model of a quadratic-node semimetal for electrons with the $j=\frac32$ angular momentum under cubic symmetry is the parent, highest-symmetry low-energy model for a variety of topological and strongly correlated materials, such as HgTe, $α$-Sn, and iridate compounds. Previously, we have theoretically demonstrated that the Luttinger semimetal exhibits surface states. In the present work, we theoretically study the evolution of these surface states under symmetry-lowering perturbations: compressive strain and bulk-inversion asymmetry (BIA). This system is quite special in that each …
We study theoretically the electron correlation effect in a three-dimensional Dirac fermion system which describes a topologically nontrivial state. It is shown within the mean-field approximation that time-reversal and inversion symmetries of the system are spontaneously broken in the region where both spin-orbit coupling and electron correlation are strong. This phase is considered as an analog of that in the lattice quantum chromodynamics. It is also shown that in the presence of magnetic impurities, electron correlation enhances the appearance of the Weyl semimetal phase between the topolo…
Topological Weyl semimetals (TWS) can be classified as type-I TWS, in which the density of states vanishes at the Weyl nodes, and type-II TWS where an electron and a hole pocket meet with finite density of states at the nodal energy. The dispersions of type-II Weyl nodes are tilted and break Lorentz invariance, allowing for physical properties distinct from those in a type-I TWS. We present minimal lattice models for both time-reversal-breaking and inversion-breaking type-II Weyl semimetals, and investigate their bulk properties and topological surface states. These lattice models capture the …
Type-II Weyl semimetals are characterized by the tilted linear dispersion in the low-energy excitations, mimicking Weyl fermions but with manifest violation of the Lorentz invariance, which has intriguing quantum transport properties. The magnetoconductivity of type-II Weyl semimetals is investigated numerically based on lattice models in parallel electric and magnetic field. We show that in the high-field regime, the sign of the magnetoconductivity of an inversion-symmetry-breaking type-II Weyl semimetals depends on the direction of the magnetic field, whereas in the weak field regime, positi…
We perform a systematic study of the Zitterbewegung effect of fermions, which are described by a Gaussian wave with broken spatial-inversion symmetry in a three-dimensional low-energy Weyl semimetal. Our results show that the motion of fermions near the Weyl points is characterized by rectilinear motion and Zitterbewegung oscillation. The ZB oscillation is affected by the width of the Gaussian wave packet, the position of the Weyl node, and the chirality and anisotropy of the fermions. By introducing a one-dimensional cosine potential, the new generated massless fermions have lower Fermi Veloc…
We theoretically investigate the features of Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) exchange interaction between two magnetic impurities, mediated by the interfacial bound states inside a domain wall (DW). The latter separates the two regions with oppositely signed inversion symmetry broken terms in graphene and Weyl semimetal. The DW is modelled by a smooth quantum well which hosts a number of discrete bound states including a pair of gapless, metallic zero-energy modes with opposite chiralities. We find clear signatures of these interfacial chiral bound states in spin response (RKKY exchange i…
We study the anomalous Nernst and thermal Hall effects in a linearized low-energy model of a tilted Weyl semimetal, with two Weyl nodes separated in momentum space. For inversion symmetric tilt, we give analytic expressions in two opposite limits: for a small tilt, corresponding to a type-I Weyl semimetal, the Nernst conductivity is finite and independent of the Fermi level, while for a large tilt, corresponding to a type-II Weyl semimetal, it acquires a contribution depending logarithmically on the Fermi energy. This result is in a sharp contrast to the nontilted case, where the Nernst respon…
Following the discovery of topological insulators (TIs), topological Dirac/Weyl semimetal has attracted much recent interest. A prevailing mechanism for the formation of Weyl points is by breaking time-reversal symmetry (TRS) or spatial inversion symmetry of a Dirac point. Here we demonstrate a generic formation mechanism for Weyl points by breaking TRS of a three-dimensional (3D) TI featured with highly degenerate 3D flat bands (FBs). It is in direct contrast to the conventional view that breaking TRS of a 2D/3D TI leads to a Chern insulator exhibiting quantum anomalous Hall effect. Based on …
We study two Weyl semimetal generalizations in five dimensions (5d) which have Yang monopoles and linked Weyl surfaces in the Brillouin zone, respectively, and carry the second Chern number as a topological number. In particular, we show a Yang monopole naturally reduces to a Hopf link of two Weyl surfaces when the $\mathbf{TP}$ (time-reversal combined with space-inversion) symmetry is broken. We then examine the phase transition between insulators with different topological numbers in 5d. In analogy to the 3d case, 5d Weyl semimetals emerge as intermediate phases during the topological phase …
Weyl semimetals are recently discovered materials supporting emergent relativistic fermions in the vicinity of band-crossing points known as Weyl nodes. The positions of the nodes and the low-energy spectrum depend sensitively on the time-reversal (TR) and inversion (I) symmetry breaking in the system. We introduce the concept of Weyl metamaterials where the particles experience a 3d curved geometry and gauge fields emerging from smooth spatially varying TR and I breaking fields. The Weyl metamaterials can be fabricated from semimetal or insulator parent states where the geometry can be tuned,…
Topological insulators (TIs) and Weyl semimetals (WSMs) are two realizations of topological matter usually appearing separately in nature. However, they are directly related to each other via a topological phase transition. In this paper, we investigate the question whether these two topological phases can exist together at the same time, with a combined, hybrid surface state at the joint boundaries. We analyze effective models of a 3D TI and an inversion symmetric WSM and couple them in a way that certain symmetries, like inversion, are preserved. A tunnel coupling approach enables us to obta…
