Motivated by future automotive applications, we study the joint target detection and parameter estimation problem using orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS), a digital modulation format robust to time-frequency selective channels. Assuming the transmitter is equipped with a mono-static MIMO radar, we propose an efficient maximum likelihood based approach to detect targets and estimate the corresponding delay, Doppler, and angle-of-arrival parameters. In order to reduce the computational complexity associated to the high-dimensional search, our scheme proceeds in two steps, i.e., target detection and coarse parameter estimation followed by refined parameter estimation. Interestingly, our numerical results demonstrate that the proposed scheme is able to identify multiple targets if they are separated in at least one domain out of three (delay, Doppler, and angle), while achieving the Cramér-Rao lower bound for the parameter estimation.
Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) is a promising alternative to orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in high-mobility beyond 5G communications. In this paper, we consider the problem of radar sensing with OTFS joint radar-communications waveform and derive a novel OTFS radar signal model by explicitly taking into account the intersymbol interference (ISI) and inter-carrier interference (ICI) effects. On the basis of the new model, we show how ISI and ICI phenomena can be turned into an advantage to surpass the maximum unambiguous detection limits in range and velocity, arisin…
In this paper, we present a unique word (UW)-based channel estimation approach for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems under doubly dispersive channels, which is applied to orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) with space time coding (STC). The OTFS modulation has been recently proposed as a robust technique under time varying channels due to its property of spreading the data symbols over time and frequency. Yet another relevant aspect is the employment of multiple antennas at the transmitter and receiver. Therefore, we consider an STC MIMO system with cyclic delay diversity at the…
This paper presents a low complexity detector for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems based on the recently proposed orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation. In the proposed detector, the copies of the transmitted symbol-vectors received through the different diversity branches (propagation paths and receive antennas) are linearly combined using the maximum ratio combining (MRC) technique to iteratively improve the signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) at the output of the combiner. To alleviate the performance degradation due to spatial correlation at the receiver…
Although it is often used in the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, application of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) over the orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation could suffer from enormous training overhead in high mobility scenarios. In this paper, we propose one uplink-aided high mobility downlink channel estimation scheme for the massive MIMO-OTFS networks. Specifically, we firstly formulate the time domain massive MIMO-OTFS signal model along the uplink and adopt the expectation maximization based variational Bayesian (EM-VB) framework to r…

We consider two distinct modes of operation. In Discovery mode, a single common data stream is broadcast over a wide angular sector. The radar receiver must detect the presence of not yet acquired targets and perform coarse estimation of their parameters (angle of arrival, range, and …

We consider a joint radar estimation and communication system using orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation. The scenario is motivated by vehicular applications where a vehicle equipped with a mono-static radar wishes to communicate data to its target receiver, while estimating parameters of interest related to this receiver. In a point-to-point communication setting over multi-path time-frequency selective channels, we study the joint radar and communication system from two perspectives, i.e., the radar estimation at the transmitter as well as the symbol detection at the receiver. Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation has the potential to enable robust communications in highly-mobile scenarios. Estimating the channels for OTFS systems, however, is associated with high pilot signaling overhead that scales with the maximum delay and Doppler spreads. This becomes particularly challenging for massive MIMO systems where the overhead also scales with the number of antennas. An important observation however is that the delay, Doppler, and angle of departure/arrival information are directly related to the distance, velocity, and direction information of the mobile u…
This paper focuses on a new path division multiple access (PDMA) for both uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) massive multiple-input multiple-output network over a high mobility scenario, where the orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) is adopted. First, the 3D UL channel model and the received signal model in the angle-delay-Doppler domain are studied. Secondly, the 3D-Newtonized orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm is utilized for the extraction of the UL channel parameters, including channel gains, directions of arrival, delays, and Doppler frequencies, over the antenna-time-frequency domain. T…
Orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS) scheme, which transforms a time and frequency selective channel into an almost non-selective channel in the delay-Doppler domain, establishes reliable wireless communication for high-speed moving devices. This work designs and analyzes low-complexity zero-forcing (LZ) and minimum mean square error (LM) receivers for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)-OTFS systems with perfect and imperfect receive channel state information (CSI). The proposed receivers provide exactly the same solution as that of the conventional counterparts, and reduce the complexity…
Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation has recently emerged as an effective waveform to tackle the linear time-varying channels. In OTFS literature, approximately constant channel gains for every group of samples within each OTFS block are assumed. This leads to limitations for OTFS on the maximum Doppler frequency that it can tolerate. Additionally, presence of cyclic prefix (CP) in OTFS signal limits the flexibility in adjusting its parameters to improve its robustness against channel time variations. Therefore, in this paper, we study the possibility of removing the CP overhead f…
Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) is a framework for communication and active sensing that processes signals in the delay-Doppler (DD) domain. This paper explores three key features of the OTFS framework, and explains their value to applications. The first feature is a compact and sparse DD domain parameterization of the wireless channel, where the parameters map directly to physical attributes of the reflectors that comprise the scattering environment, and as a consequence these parameters evolve predictably. The second feature is a novel waveform / modulation technique, matched to the D…
This paper considers the joint channel estimation and device activity detection in the grant-free random access systems, where a large number of Internet-of-Things devices intend to communicate with a low-earth orbit satellite in a sporadic way. In addition, the massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) with orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS) modulation is adopted to combat the dynamics of the terrestrial-satellite link. We first analyze the input-output relationship of the single-input single-output OTFS when the large delay and Doppler shift both exist, and then extend it to the gran…
Motivated by future automotive applications, we study some joint radar target detection and parameter estimation problems where the transmitter, equipped with a mono-static MIMO radar, wishes to detect multiple targets and then estimate their respective parameters, while simultaneously communicating information data using orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation. Assuming that the number of radio frequency chains is smaller than the number of antennas over the mmWave frequency band, we design hybrid digital-analog beamforming at the radar transmitter adapted to different operating pha…
Distributed MIMO radar is known to achieve superior sensing performance by employing widely separated antennas. However, it is challenging to implement a low-complexity distributed MIMO radar due to the complex operations at both the receivers and the fusion center. This work proposed a low-bit quantized distributed MIMO (LiQuiD-MIMO) radar to significantly reduce the burden of signal acquisition and data transmission. In the LiQuiD-MIMO radar, the widely-separated receivers are restricted to operating with low-resolution ADCs and deliver the low-bit quantized data to the fusion center. At the…
This paper investigates joint channel estimation and device activity detection in the LEO satellite-enabled grant-free random access systems with large differential delay and Doppler shift. In addition, the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) with orthogonal time-frequency space modulation (OTFS) is utilized to combat the dynamics of the terrestrial-satellite link. To simplify the computation process, we estimate the channel tensor in parallel along the delay dimension. Then, the deep learning and expectation-maximization approach are integrated into the generalized approximate message passi…

Millimeter-wave radars are being increasingly integrated into commercial vehicles to support advanced driver-assistance system features. A key shortcoming for present-day vehicular radar imaging is poor azimuth resolution (for side-looking operation) due to the form factor limits on antenna size and placement. In this paper, we propose a solution via a new multiple-input and multiple-output synthetic aperture radar (MIMO-SAR) imaging technique, that applies coherent SAR principles to vehicular MIMO radar to improve the side-view (angular) resolution. The proposed 2-stage hierarchical MIMO-SAR …
Dual-function radar-communication (DFRC) based on frequency hopping (FH) MIMO radar (FH-MIMO DFRC) achieves symbol rate much higher than radar pulse repetition frequency. Such DFRC, however, is prone to eavesdropping due to the spatially uniform illumination of FH-MIMO radar. How to enhance the physical layer security of FH-MIMO DFRC is vital yet unsolved. In this paper, we reveal the potential of using permutations of hopping frequencies to achieve secure and high-speed FH-MIMO DFRC. Detecting permutations at a communication user is challenging due to the dependence on spatial angle. We propo…
The impact of spatial correlation on mutual information (MI) is analyzed for MIMO radar. Unlike the work done in literature for statistical MIMO radar, we consider the spatial correlation of the target matrix elements to study the correlated MIMO radar performance. There is a trade-off between coherent processing gain in correlated MIMO radar and spatial diversity gain of target scatterers in uncorrelated MIMO radar. We address how the MI between the received signal and target channel matrix is affected by spatial correlation. Using majorization theory and the notion of Schur-convexity, we pro…
Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar has several advantages with respect to the traditional radar array systems in terms of performance and flexibility. However, in order to achieve high angular resolution, a MIMO radar requires a large number of transmit and receive antennas, which increases hardware design and computational complexities. Although spatial compressive sensing (CS) has been recently considered for a pulsed-waveform MIMO radar with sparse random arrays, such methods for the frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar remain largely unexplored. In this context, we pro…

This paper proposes compressed domain signal processing (CSP) multiple input multiple output (MIMO) radar, a MIMO radar approach that achieves substantial sample complexity reduction by exploiting the idea of CSP. CSP MIMO radar involves two levels of data compression followed by target detection at the compressed domain. First, compressive sensing is applied at the receive antennas, followed by a Capon beamformer which is designed to suppress clutter. Exploiting the sparse nature of the beamformer output, a second compression is applied to the filtered data. Target detection is subsequently c…
Joint radar and communications (JRC) can realize two radio frequency (RF) functions using one set of resources, greatly saving hardware, energy and spectrum for wireless systems needing both functions. Frequency-hopping (FH) MIMO radar is a popular candidate for JRC, as the achieved communication symbol rate can greatly exceed radar pulse repetition frequency. However, practical transceiver imperfections can fail many existing theoretical designs. In this work, we unveil for the first time the non-trivial impact of hardware imperfections on FH-MIMO JRC and analytically model the impact. We als…

Recent years have witnessed growing interest in reduced cost radar systems operating with low power. Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar technology is known to achieve high performance sensing by probing with multiple orthogonal waveforms. However, implementing a low cost low power MIMO radar is challenging. One of the reasons for this difficulty stems from the increased cost and power consumption required by analog-to-digital convertors (ADCs) in acquiring the multiple waveforms at the radar receiver. In this work we study reduced cost MIMO radar receivers restricted to operate with l…
Frequency-hopping (FH) MIMO radar-based dual-function radar communication (FH-MIMO DFRC) enables communication symbol rate to exceed radar pulse repetition frequency, which requires accurate estimations of timing offset and channel parameters. The estimations, however, are challenging due to unknown, fast-changing hopping frequencies and the multiplicative coupling between timing offset and channel parameters. In this paper, we develop accurate methods for a single-antenna communication receiver to estimate timing offset and channel for FH-MIMO DFRC. First, we design a novel FH-MIMO radar wave…
