Three-flavor neutrino oscillations in matter can be described by three effective neutrino masses $\widetilde{m}^{}_i$ (for $i = 1, 2, 3$) and the effective mixing matrix $V^{}_{αi}$ (for $α= e, μ, τ$ and $i = 1, 2, 3$). When the matter parameter $a \equiv 2\sqrt{2} G^{}_{\rm F} N^{}_e E$ is taken as an independent variable, a complete set of first-order ordinary differential equations for $\widetilde{m}^2_i$ and $|V^{}_{αi}|^2$ have been derived in the previous works. In the present paper, we point out that such a system of differential equations possesses both the continuous symmetries characterized by one-parameter Lie groups and the discrete symmetry associated with the permutations of three neutrino mass eigenstates. The implications of these symmetries for solving the differential equations and looking for differential invariants are discussed.
We investigated the chiral symmetry and U_A(1) anomaly at finite temperature by applying the functional renormalization group to the SU(3) linear sigma model. Expanding the local potential around the classical fields, we derived the flow equations for the renormalization parameters. In chiral limit, the flow equation for the chiral condensate is decoupled from the others and can be analytically solved. The Goldstone theorem is guaranteed in vacuum and at finite temperature, and the two phase transitions for the chiral and U_A(1) symmetry restoration happen at the same critical temperature. In …
Inspired by the tachyon-free non-supersymmetric heterotic SO(16)xSO(16) string we consider a special class of non-supersymmetric field theories: Those that can be obtained from supersymmetric field theories by supersymmetry breaking twists. We argue that such theories, like their supersymmetric counter parts, may still possess some fermionic symmetries as left-overs of the super gauge transformations and have special one-loop non-renormalization properties due to holomorphicity. In addition, we extend the supergraph techniques to these theories to calculate some explicit supersymmetry-breaking…
We consider a class of $\text{SO}(10)$ models with flavor symmetries in the Yukawa sector and investigate their viability by performing numerical fits to the fermion masses and mixing parameters. The fitting procedure involves a top-down approach in which we solve the renormalization group equations from the scale of grand unification down to the electroweak scale. This allows the intermediate scale right-handed neutrinos and scalar triplet, involved in the type I and II seesaw mechanisms, to be integrated out at their corresponding mass scales, leading to a correct renormalization group runni…
We review the role played by long-distance symmetries within the context of the similarity renormalization group approach. This is based on phase-shift-preserving continuous unitary transformations that evolve Hamiltonians with a cutoff on energy differences. We find that there is a similarity cutoff of 3/fm for which almost perfect fulfillment of Wigner SU(4) symmetry is found at the two body level. This suggests to look for similar symmetry patterns for three- and four-body forces. We also analyze the impact of potentials based on Chiral Perturbation Theory in Nuclear Structure calculations.
Expressions for neutrino oscillations contain a high degree of symmetry, but typical forms for the oscillation probabilities mask these symmetries of the oscillation parameters. We elucidate the $2^7$ parameter symmetries of the vacuum parameters and draw connections to the choice of definitions of the parameters as well as interesting degeneracies. We also show that in the presence of matter an \emph{additional} set of $2^7$ parameter symmetries exist of the matter parameters. Due to the complexity of the exact expressions for neutrino oscillations in matter, numerous approximations have been…
A semi-analytic approach to the computation of the non-linear power-spectrum of dark matter density fluctuations is proposed. The method is based on the Renormalization Group technique and can be applied to any underlying cosmological model. Our prediction on the baryonic acoustic oscillations in a LambdaCDM model accurately fits the results of N-body simulations down to zero redshift, where perturbation theory fails.
Motivated by the possibility that new (gauge) symmetries which are broken at the grand- (string-) unification scale give rise to texture zeros in the fermion mass matrices which are at the origin of the hierarchy of masses and mixings we explore the effect of such zeros on the neutrino spectrum of SUSY-GUT models. We find that the quadratic-seesaw spectrum on which most expectations are focused is neither the only nor the most interesting possibility. Cases of strong $ν_μ - ν_τ$ or $ν_e - ν_τ$ mixing are present for a specific texture structure of the Yukawa matrices and experimental evidence …
Spontaneous collapse models aim at solving the measurement problem of quantum mechanics by introducing collapse of wave function as an ontologically objective mechanism that suppresses macroscopic superpositions. In particular, the strength of collapse depends on the mass of the system. Flavor oscillating systems such as neutral mesons feature superpositions of states of different masses and, hence, could be used to test the validity of spontaneous collapse models. Recently, it has been shown that the mass-proportional CSL model causes exponential damping of the neutral meson oscillations whic…
We discuss the relationship between a symmetry in the neutrino flavour evolution equations and neutrino flavour oscillations in the collective precession mode. This collective precession mode can give rise to spectral swaps (splits) when conditions can be approximated as homogeneous and isotropic. Multi-angle numerical simulations of supernova neutrino flavour transformation show that when this approximation breaks down, non-collective neutrino oscillation modes decohere kinematically, but the collective precession mode still is expected to stand out. We provide a criterion for significant fla…
We analyze status of ${\bf C}$, ${\bf P}$ and ${\bf T}$ discrete symmetries in application to neutron-antineutron transitions breaking conservation of baryon charge ${\cal B}$ by two units. At the level of free particles all these symmetries are preserved. This includes ${\bf P}$ reflection in spite of the opposite internal parities usually ascribed to neutron and antineutron. Explanation, which goes back to the 1937 papers by E. Majorana and by G. Racah, is based on a definition of parity satisfying ${\bf P}^{2}=-1$, instead of ${\bf P}^{2}=1$, and ascribing $ {\bf P}=i$ to both, neutron and …

It is shown that the neutron-antineutron oscillation per se does not necessarily imply CP violation in an effective local Lorentz invariant description of the neutron which preserves CPT, contrary to a recent analysis in the literature. A CP- and baryon number-violating term can be transformed into a CP conserving one, thus rendering the CP violation spurious and unusable in the analysis of baryogenesis, for example. It is also shown that the neutron-antineutron oscillation in a $ΔB=2$, Lorentz and CPT invariant interaction can occur only when parity is violated, irrespective of the CP propert…
In this article, we point out that the effective Hamiltonian for neutrino oscillations in matter is invariant under the transformation of the mixing angle $θ^{}_{12} \to θ^{}_{12} - π/2$ and the exchange of first two neutrino masses $m^{}_1 \leftrightarrow m^{}_2$, if the standard parametrization of lepton flavor mixing matrix is adopted. To maintain this symmetry in perturbative calculations, we present a symmetric formulation of the effective Hamiltonian by introducing an $η$-gauge neutrino mass-squared difference $Δ^{}_* \equiv ηΔ^{}_{31} + (1-η)Δ^{}_{32}$ for $0 \leq η\leq 1$, where $Δ^{}_…
I discuss a SUSY-GUT model with a non-Abelian discrete family symmetry that explains the observed hierarchical pattern of quark and lepton masses. This $SO(10) \times Δ(75)$ model predicts modified quadratic seesaw neutrino masses and mixing angles which are interesting for three reasons: i.) they offer a solution to the solar neutrino problem, ii.) the tau neutrino has the right mass for a cosmologically interesting hot dark matter candidate, and iii.) they suggest a positive result for the $ν_μ\rightarrow ν_τ$ oscillation searches by the CHORUS and NOMAD collaborations. However, the model sh…
We investigate the symmetry properties for Baym's $Φ$-derivable schemes. We show that in general the solutions of the dynamical equations of motion, derived from approximations of the $Φ$-functional, do not fulfill the Ward-Takahashi identities of the symmetry of the underlying classical action, although the conservation laws for the expectation values of the corresponding Noether currents are fulfilled exactly for the approximation. Further we prove that one can define an effective action functional in terms of the self-consistent propagators which is invariant under the operation of the same…
Neutrino oscillations in a hot and dense astrophysical environment such as a core-collapse supernova pose a challenging, seven-dimensional flavor transport problem. To make the problem even more difficult (and interesting), neutrinos can experience collective oscillations through nonlinear refraction in the dense neutrino medium in this environment. Significant progress has been made in the last decade towards the understanding of collective neutrino oscillations in various simplified neutrino gas models with imposed symmetries and reduced dimensions. However, a series of recent studies seem t…
The results previously obtained from the model-independent application of a generalized hidden horizontal $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry to the neutrino mass matrix are updated using the latest global fits for the neutrino oscillation parameters. The resulting prediction for the Dirac $CP$ phase $δ_D$ is in agreement with recent results from T2K. The distribution for the Jarlskog invariant $J_ν$ has become sharper and appears to be approaching a particular region. The approximate effects of matter on long baseline neutrino experiments are explored, and it is shown how the weak interactions between th…
We prove to all orders of the loop expansion the low energy theorems of hidden local symmetries in four-dimensional nonlinear sigma models based on the coset space $G/H$, with $G$ and $H$ being arbitrary compact groups. Although the models are non-renormalizable, the proof is done in an analogous manner to the renormalization proof of gauge theories and two-dimensional nonlinear sigma models by restricting ourselves to the operators with two derivatives (counting a hidden gauge boson field as one derivative), i.e., with dimension 2, which are the only operators relevant to the low energy limit…
In this follow up of arXiv:1812.04663 we analyze the generalized CP symmetries of the charged lepton mass matrix compatible with the complex version of the Tri-Bi-Maximal (TBM) lepton mixing pattern. These symmetries are used to `revamp' the simplest TBM \textit{Ansatz} in a systematic way. Our generalized patterns share some of the attractive features of the original TBM matrix and are consistent with current oscillation experiments. We also discuss their phenomenological implications both for upcoming neutrino oscillation and neutrinoless double beta decay experiments.
Symmetry in neutrino oscillation serves for a better understanding of the physical properties of the phenomenon. We present a systematic way of finding symmetry in neutrino oscillation, which we call Symmetry Finder (SF). By extending the known framework in vacuum into a matter environment, we derive the SF equation, a powerful machinery for identifying symmetry in the system. After learning lessons on symmetry in the Zaglauer-Schwarzer system with a matter equivalent of the vacuum symmetry, we apply the SF method to the Denton et al. (DMP) perturbation theory to first order. We show that the …
We consider collective oscillations of neutrinos, which are emergent nonlinear flavor evolution phenomena instigated by neutrino-neutrino interactions in astrophysical environments with sufficiently high neutrino densities. We investigate the symmetries of the problem in the full three flavor mixing scheme and in the exact many-body formulation by including the effects of CP violation and neutrino magnetic moment. We show that, similar to the two flavor scheme, several dynamical symmetries exist for three flavors in the single-angle approximation if the net electron background in the environme…
Models of leptonic flavour with discrete symmetries can provide an attractive explanation of the pattern of elements found in the leptonic mixing matrix. The next generation of neutrino oscillation experiments will allow the mixing parameters to be tested to a new level of precision, crucially measuring the CP violating phase δ for the first time. In this contribution, we present results of a systematic survey of the predictions of a class of models based on residual discrete symmetries and the prospects for excluding such models at medium- and long-term oscillation experiments. We place parti…
We study scalar Non-Standard Neutrino Interactions (NSI) induced by moduli or flavon exchange between electrons and neutrinos. In a region with non-vanishing electron number density, they are known to determine a shift of the neutrino mass matrix. We review and extend the relevant formalism, and we update the existing limits on electron and neutrino scalar couplings. We explore the observability of scalar NSI in models of lepton masses based on flavour symmetries. We analyze models where the scalar couplings are constrained either by abelian symmetries or by modular invariance. We highlight re…
A dense neutrino medium can experience collective flavor oscillations through nonlinear neutrino-neutrino refraction. To make this multi-dimensional flavor transport problem more tractable, all existing studies have assumed certain symmetries (e.g., the spatial homogeneity and directional isotropy in the early universe) to reduce the dimensionality of the problem. In this work we show that, if both the directional and spatial symmetries are not enforced in the neutrino line model, collective oscillations can develop in the physical regimes where the symmetry-preserving oscillation modes are st…
Symmetry properties associated with neutrino propagation with or without a background of other particles, including neutrinos, is reviewed. The utility of symmetries is illustrated with examples chosen from the see-saw mechanism and both matter-enhanced and collective neutrino oscillations. The role of symmetries in neutrino astrophysics is highlighted.
We present a method to find the number of real and imaginary observable parameters coming from the Yukawa sector in an arbitrary gauge theory. The method leads naturally to a classification of Yukawa couplings according to their symmetries and suggests a new parametrization of masses and mixings that is useful to study the behaviour of Yukawa couplings under the renormalization group. We apply it to some examples based on the Standard Model with Yukawa couplings obeying various chiral symmetries. We also show how our method of parameter counting can be used in some models with an enlarged lept…
The one-loop renormalization of the action for a set Dirac fermions and a set of scalars spanning an arbitrary manifold coupled via Yukawa-like and gauge interactions is presented. The computation is performed with functional methods and in a geometric formalism that preserves at all stages the symmetries of the action. The result is then applied to Higgs effective field theory to obtain the renormalization group evolution. In the Standard Model limit of this EFT the RGE equations collapse into a smaller linearly independent set; this allows to probe the dynamics of the scalar discovered at LH…
Potential non-relativistic QCD provides a convenient framework to study the three heavy-quark system. We have studied its symmetries under exchange of the heavy quarks and determined the leading ultrasoft contributions to the singlet static potential and to the singlet static energy. Specializing to an equilateral geometry, we have solved the renormalization group equations in order to resum the leading ultrasoft logarithms for the singlet static potential, which is thus known at NNLL accuracy.
A new version of differential renormalization is presented. It is based on pulling out certain differential operators and introducing a logarithmic dependence into diagrams. It can be defined either in coordinate or momentum space, the latter being more flexible for treating tadpoles and diagrams where insertion of counterterms generates tadpoles. Within this version, gauge invariance is automatically preserved to all orders in Abelian case. Since differential renormalization is a strictly four-dimensional renormalization scheme it looks preferable for application in each situation when dimens…
We compute the renormalization group flow of O(N) scalar field theories in de Sitter space using nonperturbative renormalization group techniques in the local potential approximation. We obtain the flow of the effective potential on superhorizon scales for arbitrary space-time dimension D=d+1. We show that, due to strong infrared fluctuations, the latter is qualitatively similar to the corresponding one in Euclidean space with D=0. It follows that spontaneously broken symmetries are radiatively restored in any space-time dimension and for any value of N.
Symmetries of the Two-Higgs-Doublet Model (2HDM) potential that can be extended to the whole Lagrangian, i.e. the CP-symmetries CP1, CP2, CP3 and the Higgs-family symmetries Z2, U(1) and SO(3) are discussed. Sufficient and necessary conditions in terms of constraints on masses and physical couplings for the potential to respect each of these symmetries are found. Each symmetry can be realized through several alternative cases, each case being a set of relations among physical parameters. We will show that some of those relations are invariant under the renormalization group, but others are not…
Functional renormalization group equations are analytically continued from imaginary Matsubara frequencies to the real frequency axis. On the example of a scalar field with O(N) symmetry we discuss the analytic structure of the flowing action and show how it is possible to derive and solve flow equations for real-time properties such as propagator residues and particle decay widths. The formalism conserves space-time symmetries such as Lorentz or Galilei invariance and allows for improved, self-consistent approximations in terms of derivative expansions in Minkowski space.
In this contribution to the proceedings of a conference honoring the career of Francesco Iachello, two applications of symmetry principles to neutrino physics are described. These applications are the connection between fermion pairing in many-body physics and the neutrino mass as well as collective neutrino oscillations
Neutrinoless double beta decay ($β\beta0ν$) is among the only realistic probes of Majorana neutrinos. In the standard scenario, dominated by light neutrino exchange, the process amplitude is proportional to $m_{ee}$, the $e-e$ element of the Majorana mass matrix. Naively, current data allows for vanishing $m_{ee}$, but this should be protected by an appropriate flavor symmetry. All such symmetries lead to mass matrices inconsistent with oscillation phenomenology. I perform a spurion analysis to break all possible Abelian symmetries that guarantee vanishing $β\beta0ν$ rates and search for minim…
We present a minimal version for the renormalization of softly broken Super-Yang-Mills theories using the extended model with a local gauge coupling. It is shown that the non-renormalization theorems of the case with unbroken supersymmetry are valid without modifications and that the renormalization of soft-breaking parameters is completely governed by the renormalization of the supersymmetric parameters. The symmetry identities in the present context are peculiar, since the extended model contains two anomalies: the Adler-Bardeen anomaly of the axial current and an anomaly of supersymmetry in…
Tri-bimaximal mixing is a specific lepton mixing ansatz, which has been shown to account very successfully for the established neutrino oscillation data. Working in a particular basis (the `circulant basis'), we identify three independent symmetries of tri-bimaximal mixing, which we exploit to set the tri-bimaximal hypothesis in context, alongside some simple, phenomenologically interesting CP-conserving and CP-violating generalisations.
We consider the impact of imposing generalized CP symmetries on the Higgs sector of the two-Higgs-doublet model, and identify three classes of symmetries. Two of these classes constrain the scalar potential parameters to an exceptional region of parameter space which respects either a Z_2 discrete flavor symmetry or a U(1) symmetry. We exhibit a basis-invariant quantity that distinguishes between these two possible symmetries. We also show that the consequences of imposing these two classes of CP symmetry can be achieved by combining Higgs Family symmetries, and that this is not possible for t…
It is proposed that the energy-momentum expectation values of flavor states should be identified with the missing energy-momentum of neutrino processes so that the conservation of energy-momentum can be strictly imposed. It is also observed that there is a plausible condition to express neutrino mixing angles in terms of neutrino masses without invoking symmetries.
The neutrino oscillation data are well explained by the tri-bimaximal pattern. Recently it has been shown that also the bimaximal pattern could be a very good starting point in order to describe the lepton mixing. In this paper I review both the flavour structures and then I present an explicit example.
Here we propose an $A_4$ flavour symmetry model which implies a lower bound on the neutrinoless double beta decay rate, corresponding to an effective mass parameter $M_{ee} \gsim 0.03$ eV, and a direct correlation between the expected magnitude of CP violation in neutrino oscillations and the value of $\sin^2θ_{13}$, as well as a nearly maximal CP phase $δ$.
In this paper, axion models supplemented by leptoquarks and diquarks are systematically analyzed. Turning on some couplings to and among these latter states permits to unify the Peccei-Quinn symmetry with baryon (B) and lepton (L) numbers, such that the axion becomes associated to the spontaneous breaking of the three $U(1)$ symmetries. All possible four- and six-fermion patterns of B and L violation are discussed, including those inducing proton decay, with $ΔB = 1$ and $ΔL = \pm 1, \pm 3$, neutron-antineutron oscillations with $ΔB = 2$, and Majorana neutrino masses with $ΔL = 2$. Scenarios i…
We discuss two theoretical motivations of precision measurements of oscillation parameters. One is the guidance for flavour model building with flavour symmetries, and the other is the connection with the origin of matter-antimatter asymmetry. We also present our recent progress in these aspects, a new approach of flavour model building based on cross coupling in the flavon potential and a novel mechanism of leptogenesis via phase transition.
We study the symmetries of the three heavy-quark system under exchange of the quark fields within the effective field theory framework of potential non-relativistic QCD. The symmetries constrain the form of the matching coefficients in the effective theory. We then focus on the color-singlet sector and determine the so far unknown leading ultrasoft contribution to the static potential, which is of order alpha_s^4 ln(μ), and consequently to the static energy, which is of order alpha_s^4 ln(alpha_s). Finally, in the case of an equilateral geometry, we solve the renormalization group equations an…
The Standard Model's accidental and anomaly-free currents: $B-L$, $L_e-L_μ$, $L_e-L_τ$, and $L_μ-L_τ$, could be indicative of a hidden gauge structure beyond the Standard Model. Additionally, neutrino masses can be generated by a dimension-5 operator that generically breaks all of these symmetries. It is therefore important to investigate the compatibility of a gauged $U'(1)$ and neutrino phenomenology. We consider gauging each of the symmetries above with a minimal extended matter content. This includes the $Z'$, an order parameter to break the $U'(1)$, and three right-handed neutrinos. We fi…
