We study numerically the thermodynamic properties of the spin nematic phases in a magnetic field in the spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic model. When the field is applied, the phase transition temperature once goes up and then decreases rapidly toward zero, which is detected by the peak-shift in the specific heat. The underlying mechanism of the reentrant behavior is the entropic effect. In a weak field the high temperature paramagnetic phase rapidly loses its entropy while the ferroquadrupolar nematic phase remains robust by modifying the shape of the ferroquadrupolar moment. This feature serves as a fingerprint of generic ferroquadrupolar phases, while it is not observed for the case of antiferroquadrupoles.
The electronic nematic phase emerging with spontaneous rotation symmetry breaking is a central issue of modern condensed matter physics. In particular, various nematic phases in iron-based superconductors and high-$T_{\rm c}$ cuprate superconductors are extensively studied recently. Electric quadrupole moments (EQMs) are one of the order parameters characterizing these nematic phases in a unified way, and elucidating EQMs is a key to understanding these nematic phases. However, the quantum-mechanical formulation of the EQMs in crystals is a nontrivial issue because the position operators are n…
In many unconventional superconductors, nematic quantum fluctuations are strongest where the critical temperature is highest, inviting the conjecture that nematicity plays an important role in the pairing mechanism. Recently, Ba$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$Ni$_2$As$_2$ has been identified as a tunable nematic system that provides an ideal testing ground for this proposition. We therefore propose several sharp empirical tests, supported by quantitative calculations in a simple model of Ba$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$Ni$_2$As$_2$. The most stringent predictions concern experiments under uniaxial strain, which has recently em…
Unconventional superconductivity is characterized by the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the macroscopic superconducting wavefunction in addition to the gauge symmetry breaking, such as rotational-symmetry breaking with respect to the underlying crystal-lattice symmetry. Particularly, superconductivity with spontaneous rotational-symmetry breaking in the wavefunction amplitude and thus in bulk properties, not yet reported previously, is intriguing and can be termed "nematic" superconductivity in analogy to nematic liquid-crystal phases. Here, based on specific-heat measurements of the single-…
We study the relationship between the nematic phases of Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ and quantum criticality. At ambient pressure, one nematic phase is associated with a metamagnetic quantum critical end point (QCEP) when the applied magnetic field is near the \textit{c}-axis. We show, however, that this metamagnetic transition does not produce the same nematic signatures when the QCEP is reached by hydrostatic pressure with the field applied in the \textit{ab}-plane. Moreover, a second nematic phase, that is seen for field applied in the \textit{ab}-plane close to, but not right at, a second metamagneti…
There is now strong theoretical evidence that a wide range of frustrated magnets should support quantum spin-nematic order in applied magnetic field. Nonetheless, the fact that spin-nematic order does not break time-reversal symmetry makes it very difficult to detect in experiment. In this article, we continue the theme begun in [Phys. Rev. B 88, 184430 (2013)], of exploring how spin-nematic order reveals itself in the spectrum of spin excitations. Building on an earlier analysis of inelastic neutron scattering [Phys. Rev. B 91, 174402 (2015)], we show how the NMR 1/T_1 relaxation rate could b…
A central issue in the quest to understand the superconductivity in cuprates is the nature and origin of the pseudogap state, which harbours anomalous electronic states such as Fermi arc, charge density wave (CDW), and $d$-wave superconductivity. A fundamentally important, but long-standing controversial problem has been whether the pseudogap state is a distinct thermodynamic phase characterized by broken symmetries below the onset temperature $T^*$. Electronic nematicity, a fourfold ($C_4$) rotational symmetry breaking, has emerged as a key feature inside the pseudogap regime, but the presenc…
The elastocaloric effect (ECE) is a thermodynamic quantity relating changes in entropy to changes in strain experienced by a material. As such, ECE measurements can provide valuable information about the entropy landscape proximate to strain-tuned phase transitions. For ordered states that break only point symmetries, bilinear coupling of the order parameter with strain implies that the ECE can also provide a window on fluctuations above the critical temperature, and hence, in principle, can also provide a thermodynamic measure of the associated susceptibility. To demonstrate this, we use the …
Electronic nematicity, proposed to exist in a number of transition metal materials, can have different microscopic origins. In particular, the anisotropic resistivity and meta-magnetic jumps observed in Sr3Ru2O7 are consistent with an earlier proposal that the isotropic-nematic transition is generically first order and accompanied by meta-magnetism when tuned by a magnetic field. However, additional striking experimental features such as a non-Fermi liquid resistivity and critical thermodynamic behavior imply the presence of an unidentified quantum critical point (QCP). Here we show that orbit…
We report a study of the magnetoresistivity of high purity Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$, in the vicinity of its electronic nematic phase. By employing a triple-axis (9/1/1T) vector magnet, we were able to precisely tune both the magnitude and direction of the in-plane component of the magnetic field (H$_\parallel$). We report the dependence of the resistively determined anisotropy on H$_\parallel$ in the phase, as well as across the wider temperature-field region. Our measurements reveal a high-temperature anisotropy which mimics the behaviour of fluctuations from the underlying quantum critical point, a…
At ambient pressure and zero field, tetragonal CeAuSb$_{2}$ hosts stripe antiferromagnetic order at $T_{N} = 6.3$ K. Here we first show via bulk thermodynamic probes and x-ray diffraction measurements that this magnetic order is connected with a structural phase transition to a superstructure which likely breaks $C_{4}$ symmetry, thus signaling nematic order. The temperature-field-pressure phase diagram of CeAuSb$_{2}$ subsequently reveals the emergence of additional ordered states under applied pressure at a multicritical point. Our phenomenological model supports the presence of a vestigial …
Motivated by the spate of recent experimental and theoretical interest in Mott insulating S=1 triangular lattice magnets, we consider a model S=1 Hamiltonian on a triangular lattice interacting with rotationally symmetric biquadratic interactions. We show that the partition function of this model can be expressed in terms of configurations of three colors of tightly-packed, closed loops with {\em non-negative} weights, which allows for efficient quantum Monte Carlo sampling on large lattices. We find the ground state has spin nematic order, i.e. it spontaneously breaks spin rotation symmetry b…
Recent Raman scattering experiments have revealed a "quasi-elastic peak" in $\mathrm{FeSe_{1-x}S_x}$ near an Ising-nematic quantum critical point (QCP) \cite{zhang17}. Notably, the peak occurs at sub-temperature frequencies, and softens as $T^α$ when temperature is decreased toward the QCP, with $α>1$. In this work, we present a theoretical analysis of the low-frequency Raman response using a memory matrix approach. We show that such a quasi-elastic peak is associated with the relaxation of an Ising-nematic deformation of the Fermi surface. Specifically, we find that the peak frequency is prop…
It is shown that metamagnetic transition in metals can occur via the formation of electronic nematic order. We consider a simple model where the spin-dependent Fermi surface instability gives rise to the formation of an electronic nematic phase upon increasing the applied Zeeman magnetic field. This leads to two consecutive metamagnetic transitions that separate the nematic phase from the low-field and high-field 'isotropic' metallic phases. Possible connection to the physics of the bilayer Ruthenate, Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$, is also discussed.
We propose a scenario of realizing the toric code phase, which can be potentially utilized for fault-tolerant quantum computation, in candidate materials of Kitaev magnets. It is demonstrated that four-body interactions among Majorana fermions in the Kitaev spin liquid state, which are induced by applied magnetic fields as well as non-Kitaev-type exchange interactions, trigger a nematic phase transition of Majorana bonds without magnetic orders, accompanying the change of the Chern number from $\pm 1$ to zero. This gapful spin liquid state with zero Chern number is nothing but the toric code p…
We report high-resolution measurements of the in-plane thermal expansion anisotropy in the vicinity of the electronic nematic phase in Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ down to very low temperatures and in varying magnetic field orientation. For fields applied along the c-direction, a clear second-order phase transition is found at the nematic phase, with critical behavior compatible with the two-dimensional Ising universality class (although this is not fully conclusive). Measurements in a slightly tilted magnetic field reveal a broken four-fold in-plane rotational symmetry, not only within the nematic phase…
By exploiting density-matrix renormalization group techniques, we investigate the dynamical spin structure factor of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions in an applied magnetic field. In a field-induced spin nematic regime, we find gapless longitudinal and gapped transverse spin excitation spectra, in accordance with quasi-long-ranged longitudinal and short-ranged transverse spin correlations, respectively. The gapless point coincides with the dominant longitudinal spin correlation, whereas the gap pos…
The exotic normal state of iron chalcogenide superconductor FeSe, which exhibits vanishing magnetic order and possesses an electronic nematic order, triggered extensive explorations of its magnetic ground state. To understand its novel properties, we study the ground state of a highly frustrated spin-$1$ system with bilinear-biquadratic interactions using unbiased large-scale density matrix renormalization group. Remarkably, with increasing biquadratic interactions, we find a paramagnetic phase between Néel and stripe magnetic ordered phases. We identify this phase as a candidate of nematic qu…
Motivated by recent observation of a new high field phase near saturation in chromium spinels $A$Cr$_2$O$_4$ ($A=$ Zn, Cd, Hg), we study the $S = 3/2$ pyrochlore Heisenberg antiferromagnet with biquadratic interactions. Magnon instability analysis at the saturation field reveals that a very small biquadratic interaction can induce magnon pairing in pyrochlore antiferromagnets, which leads to the emergence of a ferro-quadrupolar phase, or equivalently a spin nematic phase, below the saturation field. We present the magnetic phase diagram in an applied field, studying both $S=3/2$ and $S=1$ spin…
The mechanism behind the nematicity of FeSe is not known. Through elastoresitivity measurements it has been shown to be an electronic instability. However, so far measurements have extended only to small strains, where the response is linear. Here, we apply large elastic strains to FeSe, and perform two types of measurements. (1) Using applied strain to control twinning, the nematic resistive anisotropy at temperatures below the nematic transition temperature Ts is determined. (2) Resistive anisotropy is measured as nematicity is induced through applied strain at fixed temperature above Ts. In…
The classical bilinear-biquadratic nearest-neighbor Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice does not exhibit conventional Neel-type magnetic order at any temperature or magnetic field. Instead spin correlations decay algebraically over length scales r ~ \sqrt{T}, behavior characteristic of a Coulomb phase arising from a strong local constraint. Despite this, its thermodynamic properties remain largely unchanged if Neel order is restored by the addition of a degeneracy-lifting perturbation, e.g., further neighbor interactions. Here we show how these apparent contradictions can be r…
Investigating exotic magnetic materials with spintronic techniques is effective at advancing magnetism as well as spintronics. In this work, we report unusual field-induced suppression of the spin-Seebeck effect (SSE) in a quasi one-dimensional frustrated spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ magnet LiCuVO$_4$, known to exhibit spin-nematic correlation in a wide range of external magnetic field $B$. The suppression takes place above $|B| > 2$ T in spite of the $B$-linear isothermal magnetization curves in the same $B$ range. The result can be attributed to the growth of the spin-nematic correlation while increas…
Sr3Ru2O7 belongs to the family of layered strontium ruthenates and exhibits a range of unusual emergent properties, such as electron nematic behavior and metamagnetism. Here, we show that epitaxial film strain significantly modifies these phenomena. In particular, we observe enhanced magnetic interactions and an electron nematic phase that extends to much higher temperatures and over a larger magnetic field range than in bulk single crystals. Furthermore, the films show an unusual anisotropic non-Fermi liquid behavior that is controlled by the direction of the applied magnetic field. At high m…
Higher-rank electric/magnetic multipole moments are attracting attention these days as candidate order parameters for exotic material phases. However, quantum-mechanical formulation of those multipole moments is still an ongoing issue. In this paper, we propose a thermodynamic definition of electric quadrupole moments as a measure of symmetry breaking, following previous studies of orbital magnetic dipole moments and magnetic quadrupole moments. The obtained formulas are illustrated with a model of orbital-ordered nematic phases of iron-based superconductors.
Strongly interacting electrons can exhibit novel collective phases, among which the electronic nematic phases are perhaps the most surprising as they spontaneously break rotational symmetry of the underlying crystal lattice. The electron nematicity has been recently observed in the iron-pnictide and cuprate high-temperature superconductors. Whether such a tendency of electrons to self-organise unidirectionally has a common feature in these superconductors is, however, a highly controversial issue. In the cuprates, the nematicity has been suggested as a possible source of the pseudogap phase, w…
Raman scattering can detect spontaneous point-group symmetry breaking without resorting to single-domain samples. Here we use this technique to study $\mathrm{BaFe_2As_2}$, the parent compound of the "122" Fe-based superconductors. We show that an applied compression along the Fe-Fe direction, which is commonly used to produce untwinned orthorhombic samples, changes the structural phase transition at temperature $T_{\mathrm{s}}$ into a crossover that spans a considerable temperature range above $T_{\mathrm{s}}$. Even in crystals that are not subject to any applied force, a distribution of subs…
In a magnetically driven electronic nematic state, an externally applied uniaxial strain rounds the nematic transition and increases the magnetic transition temperature. We study both effects in a simple classical model of the iron-pnictides expressed in terms of local SO(N) spins (with N = 3) which we solve to leading order in 1=N. The magnetic transition temperature is shown to increase linearly in response to an external strain while a sharp crossover, which is a remnant of the nematic transition, can only be identified for extremely small strain. We show that these results can reasonably a…
The pseudogap phenomenon in cuprates is the most mysterious puzzle in the research of high-temperature superconductivity. In particular, whether the pseudogap is associated with a crossover or phase transition has been a long-standing controversial issue. The tetragonal cuprate HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$, with only one CuO$_2$ layer per primitive cell, is an ideal system to tackle this puzzle. Here, we measure the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility within the CuO$_2$ plane with exceptionally high-precision magnetic torque experiments. Our key finding is that a distinct two-fold in-plane anisotropy…
We present a model of classical hard-core dimers on the square lattice that contains an Ising nematic phase in its phase diagram. We consider a model with an attractive interaction for parallel dimers on a given plaquette of the square lattice and an attractive interaction for neighboring parallel dimers on the same row ({\it viz} column) of the lattice. By extensive Monte carlo simulations we find that with a finite density of holes the phase diagram has, with rising temperatures, a columnar crystalline phase, an Ising nematic liquid phase and a disordered fluid phase, separated by Ising cont…
We investigate the Zeeman-field-driven quantum phase transitions between singlet spin liquids and algebraically ordered O(2) nematic spin liquids of spin-one bosons in one-dimensional optical lattices. We find that the critical behavior is characterized by condensation of hardcore bosons instead of ideal magnons in high dimensional lattices. Critical exponents are strongly renormalized by hardcore interactions and critical states are equivalent to the free Fermion model up to the Friedal oscillations. We also find that the algebraically ordered nematic spin liquids close to critical points are…
We report a Raman scattering study of nematic degrees of freedom in the iron-based superconductor parent compound BaFe$_2$As$_2$ under tunable uniaxial strain. We demonstrate that the polarization resolved arsenic (As) phonon intensity can be used to monitor the nematic order parameter as a function of both temperature and strain. At low temperature in the nematic ordered phase we use it to track the continuous and reversible orientation of nematic domains under variable strain. At higher temperature, the evolution of the As phonon intensity under strain reflects an enhanced nematic susceptibi…
The concept of a vestigial nematic order emerging from a "mother" spin or charge density-wave state has been applied to describe the phase diagrams of several systems, including unconventional superconductors. In a perfectly clean system, the two orders appear simultaneously via a first-order quantum phase transition, implying the absence of quantum criticality. Here, we investigate how this behavior is affected by impurity-free droplets that are naturally present in inhomogeneous systems. Due to their quantum dynamics, finite-size droplets sustain long-range nematic order but not long-range d…
The interplay between strong correlations and non-trivial topology in twisted moiré systems can give rise to a rich landscape of ordered states that intertwine the spin, valley, and charge degrees of freedom. In this paper, we investigate the properties of a system that displays long-range valley-polarized nematic order. Besides breaking the threefold rotational symmetry of the triangular moiré superlattice, this type of order also breaks twofold rotational and time-reversal symmetries, which leads to interesting properties. First, we develop a phenomenological model to describe the onset of t…
