The Backward Angle Neutron Detector (BAND) of CLAS12 detects neutrons emitted at backward angles of $155^\circ$ to $175^\circ$, with momenta between $200$ and $600$ MeV/c. It is positioned 3 meters upstream of the target, consists of $18$ rows and $5$ layers of $7.2$ cm by $7.2$ cm scintillator bars, and read out on both ends by PMTs to measure time and energy deposition in the scintillator layers. Between the target and BAND there is a 2 cm thick lead wall followed by a 2 cm veto layer to suppress gammas and reject charged particles. This paper discusses the component-selection tests and the detector assembly. Timing calibrations (including offsets and time-walk) were performed using a novel pulsed-laser calibration system, resulting in time resolutions better than $250$ ps (150 ps) for energy depositions above 2 MeVee (5 MeVee). Cosmic rays and a variety of radioactive sources were used to calibration the energy response of the detector. Scintillator bar attenuation lengths were measured. The time resolution results in a neutron momentum reconstruction resolution, $δp/p < 1.5$\% for neutron momentum $200\le p\le 600$ MeV/c. Final performance of the BAND with CLAS12 is shown, including electron-neutral particle timing spectra and a discussion of the off-time neutral contamination as a function of energy deposition threshold.
A new method for analyzing collimation angle of neutron Soller collimator is described. Gaussian distribution formula is used to define the angle distribution function of neutron source and neutron transmission function of Soller collimator. A relationship between FWHM of collimator rocking curve and collimation angle is derived.
Very Small Angle Neutron Scattering (VSANS) is an upgrade of the traditional Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) technique which can cover three orders of magnitude of length scale from one nanometer to one micrometer. It is a powerful tool for structure calibration in polymer science, biology, material science and condensed matter physics. Since the first VSANS instrument, D11 in Grenoble, was built in 1972, new collimation techniques, focusing optics (multi-beam converging apertures, material or magnetic lenses, and focusing mirrors) and higher resolution detectors combined with the long f…
A new Small Angle Neutron Scattering instrument is proposed for the European Spallation Source. The pulsed source requires a time-of-flight analysis of the gathered neutrons at the detector. The optimal instrument length is found to be rather large, which allows for a polarizer and a versatile collimation. The polarizer allows for studying magnetic samples and incoherent background subtraction. The wide collimation will host VSANS and SESANS options that increase the resolution of the instrument towards um and tens of um, respectively. Two 1m2 area detectors will cover a large solid angle simu…
In the present experiment we measure the forward-emitted angle-integrated neutron spectrum of the 7Li(p,n)7Be reaction via time-of-flight neutron spectrometry. The proton beam is shaped to a Gaussian-like distribution with energies close to the reaction threshold upstream the thick lithium target. The angle-integrated neutron spectrum resembles a Maxwellian or stellar neutron spectrum at kT=30 keV.
We propose and design novel axisymmetric focusing mirrors, known as Wolter optics, for small-angle neutron scattering instruments. Ray-tracing simulations show that using the mirrors can result in more than an order-of-magnitude increase in the neutron flux reaching detectors, while decreasing the minimum wave vector transfer. Such mirrors are made of Ni using a mature technology. They can be coated with neutron supermirror multilayers, and multiple mirrors can be nested to improve their flux-collection ability. Thus, these mirrors offer simple and flexible means of significantly improving exi…
Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) is an experimental technique to detect material structures in the nanometer to micrometer range. The solution of the structural model constructed from SANS strongly depends on the accuracy of the reduced data. The time-of-flight (TOF) SANS data are dependent on the wavelength of the pulsed neutron source. Therefore, data reduction must be handled very carefully to transform measured neutron events into neutron scattering intensity. In this study, reduction algorithms for TOF SANS data are developed and optimized using simulated data from a virtual neutron …
Building the European Spallation Source (ESS), the most powerful neutron source in the world, requires significant technological advances at most fronts of instrument component design. Detectors are not an exception. The existing implementations at current neutron scattering facilities are at their performance limits and sometimes barely cover the scientific needs. At full operation the ESS will yield unprecedented neutron brilliance. This means that one of the most challenging aspects for the new detector designs is the increased rate capability and in particular the peak instantaneous rate c…
The design and characteristics of the new very small angle neutron scattering spectrometer under construction at the Laboratoire Leon Brillouin is described. Its goal is to extend the range of scattering vectors magnitudes towards 2x10{-4} /A. The unique feature of this new spectrometer is a high resolution two dimensional image plate detector sensitive to neutrons. The wavelength selection is achieved by a double reflection supermirror monochromator and the collimator uses a novel multibeam design.
Kinetic small-angle neutron scattering provides access to the microscopic properties of mesoscale systems under slow, periodic perturbations. By interlocking the phases of neutron pulse, sample modulation, and detector signal, so-called Time-Involved Small Angle Neutron scattering Experiments (TISANE) allow to exploit the neutron velocity spread and record data without major sacrifice in intensity at time-scales down to micro-seconds. We review the optimization strategies of TISANE that arise from specific aspects of the process of data acquisition and data analysis starting from the basic pri…
It is generally assumed by most of the small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) user community that a neutrons energy is unchanged during SANS measurements. Here, the scattering from water, specifically light water, was measured on the EQ-SANS instrument, a time-of-flight SANS instrument located at the Spallation Neutron Source of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. A significant inelastic process was observed in the TOF spectra of neutrons scattered from water. Analysis of the TOF spectra from the sample showed that the scattered neutrons have energies consistent with room-temperature thermal energie…
The concept of the instrument with absorption gratings into small-angle neutron scattering measuring is discussed. The instrument action consists of passing direct and scattered radiation through a system of 3 absorption gratings, consisting of periodic transparent and absorbing strips. The instrument operates in a mode of geometric optics. The principle of operation of the instrument is demonstrated on a prototype created for optical radiation. For the instrument equations of the radiation transmission and the display of the sample, scattering function has been derived. The necessary paramete…
We provide the first demonstration that a neutron far-field interferometer can be employed to measure the microstructure of a sample. The interferometer is based on the moiré pattern of two phase modulating gratings which was previously realized in hard x-ray and visible light experiments. The autocorrelation length of this interferometer, and hence the microstructure length scale that is probed, is proportional to the grating spacing and the neutron wavelength, and can be varied over several orders of magnitude for one pair of gratings. We compare our measurements of the change in visibility …
Nanoscale structure determination belongs to one of the crucial tasks in materials science. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) is a highly valuable tool to investigate nanostructures. Here, we explore the possibility of a compact SANS instrument to be installed at an individual accelerator based pulsed low-flux source, and discuss applications in structural characterization, education, and training. Monte Carlo simulations of a realistic setup demonstrate the feasibility of such an instrument, with an ideal measurement taking about 7 hours. The anticipated length-scale measurement range is …
We describe theoretical and practical aspects of spin-echo modulated small-angle neutron scattering (SEMSANS) as well as the potential combination with SANS. Based on the preliminary technical designs of SKADI (a SANS instrument proposed for the European Spallation Source) and a SEMSANS add-on, we assess the practicability, feasibility and scientific merit of a combined SANS and SEMSANS setup by calculating tentative SANS and SEMSANS results for soft matter, geology and advanced material samples that have been previously studied by scattering methods. We conclude that lengths from 1 nm up to 0…
Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) is the most significant neutron technique in terms of impact on science and engineering. However, the basic concept of SANS facilities has not changed since the technique's inception about 40 years ago, as all SANS instruments, save a few, are still designed as pinhole cameras. Here we demonstrate a novel concept for a SANS instrument, based on axisymmetric focusing mirrors. We build and test a small prototype, which shows a performance comparable to that of conventional large SANS facilities. By using a detector with 50-micron pixels, we build the most co…
Magnetic small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) is ideally suited to provide direct, reciprocal-space information of long-wavelength magnetic modulations, such as helicoids, solitons, merons, or skyrmions. SANS of such structures in thin films or micro-structured bulk materials is strongly limited by the tiny scattering volume vis a vis the prohibitively large background scattering by the substrate and support structures. Considering near-surface scattering closely above the critical angle of reflection, where unwanted signal contributions due to substrate or support structures becomes very sma…
