Large $N$ matrix quantum mechanics is central to holographic duality but not solvable in the most interesting cases. We show that the spectrum and simple expectation values in these theories can be obtained numerically via a `bootstrap' methodology. In this approach, operator expectation values are related by symmetries -- such as time translation and $SU(N)$ gauge invariance -- and then bounded with certain positivity constraints. We first demonstrate how this method efficiently solves the conventional quantum anharmonic oscillator. We then reproduce the known solution of large $N$ single matrix quantum mechanics. Finally, we present new results on the ground state of large $N$ two matrix quantum mechanics.
Recently, a novel bootstrap method for numerical calculations in matrix models and quantum mechanical systems is proposed. We apply the method to certain quantum mechanical systems derived from some well-known local toric Calabi-Yau geometries, where the exact quantization conditions have been conjecturally related to topological string theory. We find that the bootstrap method provides a promising alternative for the precision numerical calculations of the energy eigenvalues. An improvement in our approach is to use a larger set of two-dimensional operators instead of one-dimensional ones. We…
We point out that the bootstrap program in quantum mechanics proposed by Han et al reduces to a bootstrap study of a microcanonical ensemble of the same Hamiltonian in the $\hbar \to 0$ limit. In the limit, the quantum mechanical archipelago becomes an extremely thin line for an anharmonic oscillator. For a double-well potential, a peninsula in $E\le 0$ appears.
Bootstrapping in Quantum Mechanics uses positivity condition to derive the Eigenspectum. For non-hermitian systems usual positivity condition does not work. In this paper we define positivity condition for special class of non-hermitian hamiltonian, the PT symmetric Hamiltonian. We illustrate this modified positivity condition with several examples and obtain eigenspectrum.
S-matrix bootstrap and positivity bounds are usually viewed as constraints on low-energy theories imposed by the requirement of a standard UV completion. By considering graviton--photon scattering in the Standard Model, we argue that the low-energy theory can be used to put constraints on the UV behaviour of the gravitational scattering amplitudes.
We propose a new non-perturbative method for studying UV complete unitary quantum field theories (QFTs) with a mass gap in general number of spacetime dimensions. The method relies on unitarity formulated as positive semi-definiteness of the matrix of inner products between asymptotic states (in and out) and states created by the action of local operators on the vacuum. The corresponding matrix elements involve scattering amplitudes, form factors and spectral densities of local operators. We test this method in two-dimensional QFTs by setting up a linear optimization problem that gives a lower…

We apply the bootstrap technique to find the moments of certain multi-trace and multi-matrix random matrix models suggested by noncommutative geometry. Using bootstrapping we are able to find the relationships between the coupling constant of these models and their second moments. Using the Schwinger-Dyson equations, all other moments can be expressed in terms of the coupling constant and the second moment. Explicit relations for higher mixed moments are obtained.
We describe a new way of rewriting the partition function of scalar field theory on fuzzy complex projective spaces as a solvable multitrace matrix model. This model is given as a perturbative high-temperature expansion. At each order, we present an explicit analytic expression for most of the arising terms; the remaining terms are computed explicitly up to fourth order. The method presented here can be applied to any model of hermitian matrices. Our results confirm constraints previously derived for the multitrace matrix model by Polychronakos. A further implicit expectation about the shape o…
We combine the methods of Hamiltonian Truncation and the recently proposed generalisation of the S-matrix bootstrap that includes local operators to determine the two-particle scattering amplitude and the two-particle form factor of the stress tensor at $s>0$ in the 2d $ϕ^4$ theory. We use the form factor of the stress tensor at $s\le 0$ and its spectral density computed using Lightcone Conformal Truncation (LCT), and inject them into the generalized S-matrix bootstrap set-up. The obtained results for the scattering amplitude and the form factor are fully reliable only in the elastic regime. W…
Bootstrap is a novel and ambitious paradigm for quantum physics. It aims to solve the target problems by exploiting theoretical constraints from general physical principles and self-consistency conditions. The bootstrap philosophy dates back to the 1960s. Its real power has been recognized only recently in, e.g., conformal field theories and relativistic scattering amplitudes. Inspired by [X. Han, S. A. Hartnoll, and J. Kruthoff, Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 041601 (2020)], we report the first bootstrap results in low-energy nuclear physics, where deuteron, with its Hamiltonian given by pionless effe…
On-shell constructibility is redefining our understanding of perturbative quantum field theory. The tree-level S-matrix of constructible theories is completely determined by a set of recurrence relations and a reduced number of scattering amplitudes. In this paper, we revisit the on-shell constructibility of gravitational theories making use of new results on soft theorems and recurrence relations. We show that using a double complex shift and an all-line soft deformation allows us to relax the technical conditions for constructibility, in order to include more general propagators and higher-d…
Using duality in optimization theory we formulate a dual approach to the S-matrix bootstrap that provides rigorous bounds to 2D QFT observables as a consequence of unitarity, crossing symmetry and analyticity of the scattering matrix. We then explain how to optimize such bounds numerically, and prove that they provide the same bounds obtained from the usual primal formulation of the S-matrix Bootstrap, at least once convergence is attained from both perspectives. These techniques are then applied to the study of a gapped system with two stable particles of different masses, which serves as a t…
Bootstrap methods, initially developed for solving statistical and quantum field theories, have recently been shown to capture the discrete spectrum of quantum mechanical problems, such as the single particle Schrödinger equation with an anharmonic potential. The core of bootstrap methods builds on exact recursion relations of arbitrary moments of some quantum operator and the use of an adequate set of positivity criteria. We extend this methodology to models with continuous Bloch band spectra, by considering a single quantum particle in a periodic cosine potential. We find that the band struc…
We explore quantum mechanical theories whose fundamental degrees of freedom are rectangular matrices with Grassmann valued matrix elements. We study particular models where the low energy sector can be described in terms of a bosonic Hermitian matrix quantum mechanics. We describe the classical curved phase space that emerges in the low energy sector. The phase space lives on a compact Kahler manifold parameterized by a complex matrix, of the type discovered some time ago by Berezin. The emergence of a semiclassical bosonic matrix quantum mechanics at low energies requires that the original Gr…
We analyze solutions to loop-truncated Schwinger-Dyson equations in massless N=2 and N=4 Wess-Zumino matrix quantum mechanics at finite temperature, where conventional perturbation theory breaks down due to IR divergences. We find a rather intricate low temperature expansion that involves fractional power scaling in the temperature, based on a consistent "soft collinear" approximation. We conjecture that at least in the N=4 matrix quantum mechanics, such scaling behavior holds to all perturbative orders in the 1/N expansion. We discuss some preliminary results in analyzing the gauged supersymm…
We calculate the multi-instanton corrections to the ground state energy in large $N$ Matrix Quantum Mechanics. We find that they can be obtained, through a non-perturbative difference equation, from the multi-instanton series in conventional Quantum Mechanics, as determined by the exact WKB method. We test our results by verifying that the one-instanton correction controls the large order behavior of the $1/N$ expansion in the quartic potential and in the $c=1$ string.
We implement the Rayleigh-Ritz method in supersymmetric quantum mechanics with flat directions, and extract the S-matrix and metastable resonances. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated in two strongly coupled systems: an N=1 toy supermembrane model, and an N=4 model with a U(1) gauge multiplet and a charged chiral multiplet.
We revisit the old black hole S-Matrix construction and its new partial wave expansion of 't Hooft. Inspired by old ideas from non-critical string theory & $c=1$ Matrix Quantum Mechanics, we reformulate the scattering in terms of a quantum mechanical model\textemdash of waves scattering off inverted harmonic oscillator potentials\textemdash that exactly reproduces the unitary black hole S-Matrix for all spherical harmonics; each partial wave corresponds to an inverted harmonic oscillator with ground state energy that is shifted relative to the s-wave oscillator. Identifying a connection to 2d …
We present basics of the gauged superfield approach to constructing N-superconformal multi-particle Calogero-type systems developed in arXiv:0812.4276, arXiv:0905.4951 and arXiv:0912.3508. This approach is illustrated by the multi-particle systems possessing SU(1,1|1) and D(2,1;α) supersymmetries, as well as by the model of new N=4 superconformal quantum mechanics.
We consider the gauged free fermionic matrix model, for a single fermionic matrix. In the large $N$ limit this system describes a $c=1/2$ chiral fermion in $1+1$ dimensions. The Gauss' law constraint implies that to obtain a physical state, indices of the fermionic matrices must be fully contracted, to form a singlet. There are two ways in which this can be achieved: one can consider a trace basis formed from products of traces of fermionic matrices or one can consider a Schur function basis, labeled by Young diagrams. The Schur polynomials for the fermions involve a twisted character, as a co…

An all orders formula for the $S$-matrix for 2 $\rightarrow$ 2 scattering in large N Chern-Simons theory coupled to a fundamental scalar has recently been conjectured. We find a scaling limit of the theory in which the pole in this $S$-matrix is near threshold. We argue that the theory must be well described by non-relativistic quantum mechanics in this limit, and determine the relevant Schroedinger equation. We demonstrate that the $S$-matrix obtained from this Schroedinger equation agrees perfectly with this scaling limit of the relativistic $S$-matrix; in particular the pole structures matc…
We introduce a transverse field Ising model with order N^2 spins interacting via a nonlocal quartic interaction. The model has an O(N,Z), hyperoctahedral, symmetry. We show that the large N partition function admits a saddle point in which the symmetry is enhanced to O(N). We further demonstrate that this `matrix saddle' correctly computes large N observables at weak and strong coupling. The matrix saddle undergoes a continuous quantum phase transition at intermediate couplings. At the transition the matrix eigenvalue distribution becomes disconnected. The critical excitations are described by…
We study the phase diagram of scalar field theory on a three dimensional Euclidean spacetime whose spatial component is a fuzzy sphere. The corresponding model is an ordinary one-dimensional matrix model deformed by terms involving fixed external matrices. These terms can be approximated by multitrace expressions using a group theoretical method developed recently. The resulting matrix model is accessible to the standard techniques of matrix quantum mechanics.
