High-dimensional entanglement promises to greatly enhance the performance of quantum communication and enable quantum advantages unreachable by qubit entanglement. One of the great challenges, however, is the reliable production, distribution and local certification of high-dimensional sources of entanglement. In this article, we present an optical setup capable of producing quantum states with an exceptionally high-level of scalability, control and quality, that, together with novel certification techniques, achieve the highest amount of entanglement recorded so far. We showcase entanglement in $32$-spatial dimensions with record fidelity to the maximally entangled state ($F=0.933\pm0.001$) and introduce measurement efficient schemes to certify entanglement of formation ($E_{oF}=3.728\pm0.006$). Combined with the existing multi-core fibre technology, our results will lay a solid foundation for the construction of high-dimensional quantum networks.
We address parametric-downconversion seeded by multimode pseudo-thermal fields. We show that this process may be used to generate multimode pairwise correlated states with entanglement properties that can be tuned by controlling the seed intensities. Multimode pseudo-thermal fields seeded parametric-downconversion represents a novel source of correlated states, which allows one to explore the classical-quantum transition in pairwise correlations and to realize ghost imaging and ghost diffraction in regimes not yet explored by experiments.
We present a simple treatment for the phenomenon of parametric downconversion considering the coherent scattering of one pump photon into a photon pair by a nonlinear crystal. The energy and momentum entanglement of the quantum state of the generated twin photons are seen as a consequence of the fundamental indistinguishability of the time and the position in which the photon pair is created inside the crystal. We also discuss some consequences of the system entanglement.
We investigate an intra-cavity coupled down-conversion scheme to generate quadripartite entanglement using concurrently resonant nonlinearities. We verify that quadripartite entanglement is present in this system by calculating the output fluctuation spectra and then considering violations of optimized inequalities of the van Loock-Furusawa type. The entanglement characteristics both above and below the oscillation threshold are considered. We also present analytic solutions for the quadrature operators and the van Loock-Furusawa correlations in the undepleted pump approximation.
The process of cascaded downconversion and sum-frequency generation inside an optical cavity has been predicted to be a potential source of three-mode continuous-variable entanglement. When the cavity is pumped by two fields, the threshold properties have been analysed, showing that these are more complicated than in well-known processes such as optical parametric oscillation. When there is only a single pumping field, the entanglement properties have been calculated using a linearised fluctuation analysis, but without any consideration of the threshold properties or critical operating points …
We show that the states generated by a three-mode spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) interaction Hamiltonian possess tripartite entanglement of a different nature to other paradigmatic three-mode entangled states generated by the combination of two-mode SPDCs interactions. While two-mode SPDC generates gaussian states whose entanglement can be characterized by standard criteria based on two-mode quantum correlations, these criteria fail to capture the entanglement generated by three-mode SPDC. We use criteria built from three-mode correlation functions to show that the class of state…
Stable sources of entangled photons are important requirements for quantum communications. In recent years, cascaded downconversion has been demonstrated as an effective method of directly producing three-photon entanglement. However, to produce polarization entanglement these sources have until now relied on intricate active phase stabilization schemes, thus limiting their robustness and usability. In this work, we present a completely phase-stable source of three-photon entanglement in the polarization degree of freedom. With this source, which is based on a cascade of two pair sources based…
Pulsed parametric downconversion (PDC) processes generate photon pairs with a rich spectral-temporal structure, which offer an attractive potential for quantum information and communication applications. In this paper, we investigate the four-dimensional chronocyclic Wigner function of the PDC state, which naturally lends itself to the pulsed characteristics of these states. From this function we derive the conditioned time-bandwidth product of one of the pair photons, a quantity which is not only a valid measure of entanglement between the PDC photons but also allows to highlight a remarkable…
We present a study of the effects of dispersion on the properties of photon pairs generated by type-II, collinear spontaneous parametric downconversion. Specifically, we take into consideration the effects of a chirped pump, as well as of dispersive propagation of the photon pairs. We present expressions for the joint amplitude both in the spectral and temporal domains, as well as for the chronocyclic Wigner function of heralded single photons, which fully characterizes the single photon spectral (temporal) properties. On the one hand, we show that unwanted effects of pump chirp in terms of th…
Device-independent quantum key distribution (DIQKD) guarantees unconditional security of secret key without making assumptions about the internal workings of the devices used. It does so using the loophole-free violation of a Bell's inequality. The primary challenge in realizing DIQKD in practice is the detection loophole problem that is inherent to photonic tests of Bell's inequalities over lossy channels. We revisit the proposal of Curty and Moroder [Phys. Rev. A 84, 010304(R) (2011)] to use a linear optics-based entanglement-swapping relay (ESR) to counter this problem. We consider realisti…
We study the properties of bi-squeezed tripartite Gaussian states created by two spontaneous parametric down-conversion processes that share a common idler. We give a complete description of the quantum correlations across of all partitions, as well as of the genuine multipartite entanglement, obtaining analytical expressions for most of the quantities of interest. We find that the state contains genuine tripartite entanglement, in addition to the bipartite entanglement among the modes that are directly squeezed. We also investigate the effect of homodyne detection of the photons in the common…
We suggest and demonstrate a scheme to compensate spatial and spectral decoherence effects in the generation of polarization entangled states by type-I parametric downconversion. In our device a programmable spatial light modulator imposes a polarization dependent phase-shift on different spatial sections of the overall downconversion output and this effect is exploited to realize an effective purification technique for polarization entanglement.
We report the first quantum frequency downconversion experiment. Using the difference frequency generation process in a periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide, we successfully observed the phase-preserved frequency downconversion of a coherent pulse train with an average photon number per pulse of $<$1, from the 0.7-$μ$m visible wavelength band to the 1.3-$μ$m telecom band. We expect this technology to become an important tool for flexible photonic quantum networking, including the realization of quantum repeater systems over optical fiber using atom-photon entanglement sources for the v…
We report a simple scheme for direct generation of frequency-bin entangled photon pairs via spontaneous parametric downconversion. Our fabricated nonlinear optical crystal with two different poling periods can simultaneously satisfy two different, spectrally symmetric nondegenerate quasi-phase-matching conditions, enabling the direct generation of entanglement in two discrete frequency-bin modes. Our produced photon pairs exhibited Hong-Ou-Mandel interference with high-visibility beating oscillations, a signature of two-mode frequency-bin entanglement. Moreover, we demonstrate deterministic en…
We report spontaneous parametric downconversion having an unusually wide spectral bandwidth. A collinear type-1 phase-matching configuration is employed with degeneracy near the zero group velocity dispersion frequency. With a spectral width of 1080 nm and degenerate wavelength 1885 nm, the source also emits a high flux of photon pairs constrained to a cone of only 2 degree half-angle. A rigorous theoretical approach is developed that confirms the experimental observations. The source properties are consistent with an ultra-short photon-pair correlation time and, for a narrowband pump, extreme…
We address the pair of conjugated field modes obtained from parametric-downconversion as a convenient system to analyze the quantum-classical transition in the continuous variable regime. We explicitly evaluate intensity correlations, negativity and entanglement for the system in a thermal state and show that a hierarchy of nonclassicality thresholds naturally emerges in terms of thermal and downconversion photon number. We show that the transition from quantum to classical regime may be tuned by controlling the intensities of the seeds and detected by intensity measurements. Besides, we show …
We address the intrinsic multimode nature of the quantum state of light obtained by pulsed spontaneous parametric downconversion and develop a theoretical model based only on experimentally accessible quantities. We exploit the pairwise entanglement as a resource for conditional multimode measurements and derive closed formulas for the detection probability and the density matrix of the conditional states. We present a set of experiments performed to validate our model in different conditions that are in excellent agreement with experimental data. Finally, we evaluate nonGaussianity of the con…
Spontaneous parametric downconversion is an essential technique in quantum optics experiments. In this paper, various quasi-phase-matching processes in several typical periodically polarized nonlinear materials are analyzed and calculated. Furthermore, a general method for realizing multiple types of quasi-phase-matching in a monolithic material is presented. Finally, a novel design to prepare multiple entangled photon pairs based on the Sagnac interferometer is discussed. This technology can be applied to tiny optical paths in the telecom C band, saving both cost and space.
We investigate a compact source of entanglement. This device is composed of a pair of linearly coupled nonlinear waveguides operating by means of degenerate parametric downconversion. For the vacuum state at the input the generalized squeeze variance and logarithmic negativity are used to quantify the amount of nonclassicality and entanglement of output beams. Squeezing and entanglement generation for various dynamical regimes of the device are discussed.
Optical downconversion is a key resource for generating nonclassical states. Very recently, direct nondegenerate triple-photon spontaneous downconversion (NTPSD) with bright photon triplets and strong third-order correlations has been demonstrated in a superconducting device (2020 Phys. Rev. X 10 011011). Besides, linear and nonlinear tripartite entanglement in this process have also been predicted (2018 Phys. Rev. Lett. 120 043601; 2020 Phys. Rev. Lett. 125 020502). In this paper, we consider the generation of nonclassical optical quantum superpositions and investigate nonlinear quantum steer…
Using a spontaneous parametric-downconversion source of photon pairs, we are working towards the creation of arbitrary 2-qubit quantum states with high fidelity. Currently, all physically allowable combinations of polarization entanglement and mixture can be produced, including maximally-entangled mixed states. The states are experimentally measured and refined via computer-automated quantum-state tomography, and this system has also been used to perform single-qubit and ancilla-assisted quantum process tomography.
We present a scheme, based only on linear optics and standard photon detection, that allows to generate heralded multiphoton entangled states of arbitrary photon number from spontaneous parametric downconversion (PDC) in the weak interaction regime. The scheme also works in the strong interaction regime, i.e., for the production of large photon numbers, when photon-number resolving detectors with nearly perfect quantum efficiency are used. In addition, the same setup can be used for quantum metrology as multiphoton interferometer with sensitivity at the Heisenberg limit.
We implement a double-pixel, compressive sensing camera to efficiently characterize, at high resolution, the spatially entangled fields produced by spontaneous parametric downconversion. This technique leverages sparsity in spatial correlations between entangled photons to improve acquisition times over raster-scanning by a scaling factor up to n^2/log(n) for n-dimensional images. We image at resolutions up to 1024 dimensions per detector and demonstrate a channel capacity of 8.4 bits per photon. By comparing the classical mutual information in conjugate bases, we violate an entropic Einstein-…
We report the creation of a wide range of quantum states with controllable degrees of entanglement and entropy using an optical two-qubit source based on spontaneous parametric downconversion. The states are characterised using measures of entanglement and entropy determined from tomographically determined density matrices. The Tangle-Entropy plane is introduced as a graphical representation of these states, and the theoretic upper bound for the maximum amount of entanglement possible for a given entropy is presented. Such a combination of general quantum state creation and accurate characteri…
We demonstrate a general method of engineering the joint quantum state of photon pairs produced in spontaneous parametric downconversion (PDC). The method makes use of a superlattice structure of nonlinear and linear materials, in conjunction with a broadband pump, to manipulate the group delays of the signal and idler photons relative to the pump pulse, and realizes a joint spectral amplitude with arbitrary degree of entanglement for the generated pairs. This method of group delay engineering has the potential of synthesizing a broad range of states including factorizable states crucial for q…
The utilization and control of nonlocal quantum interactions is an area of active investigation. This is not limited to subatomic structures but extends to the macroscopic level. Nonlocal interactions can be from either entanglement or path indistinguishability (the path integral for larger systems), with the latter being further subdivided as discussed. These two distinct phenomenon have recently been treated often in the literature as essentially identical, which is problematic when utilizing them for practical applications. The confusion may lie in misunderstanding the physics of the type I…
Hamiltonian daemons have recently been defined classically as small, closed Hamiltonian systems which can exhibit secular energy transfer from high-frequency to low-frequency degrees of freedom (steady downconversion), analogous to the steady transfer of energy in a combustion engine from the high Terahertz frequencies of molecular excitations to the low kilohertz frequencies of piston motion. Classical daemons achieve downconversion within a small, closed system by exploiting nonlinear resonances; the adiabatic theorem permits their operation but imposes non-trivial limitations on their effic…
The existence of non-local quantum correlations is certainly the most important specific property of the quantum world. However, it is a challenging task to distinguish correlations of classical origin from genuine quantum correlations, especially when the system involves more than two parties, for which different partitions must be simultaneously considered. In the case of mixed states, intermediate levels of correlations must be introduced, coined by the name inseparability. In this work, we revisit in more detail such a concept in the context of continuous-variable quantum optics. We consid…
In single-qubit quantum secret sharing, a secret is shared between N parties via manipulation and measurement of one qubit at a time. Each qubit is sent to all N parties in sequence; the secret is encoded in the first participant's preparation of the qubit state and the subsequent participants' choices of state rotation or measurement basis. We present a protocol for single-qubit quantum secret sharing using polarization entanglement of photon pairs produced in type-I spontaneous parametric downconversion. We investigate the protocol's security against eavesdropping attack under common experim…
We present a detailed numerical investigation of five nonlinear materials and their properties regarding photon-pair creation using parametric downconversion. Periodic poling of ferroelectric nonlinear materials is a convenient way to generate collinearly propagating photon pairs. Most applications and experiments use the well-known potassium titanyl phosphate (KTiOPO4, ppKTP) and lithium niobate (LiNbO3, ppLN) crystals for this purpose. In this article we provide a profound discussion on the family of KTP-isomorphic nonlinear materials, including KTP itself but also the much less common CTA (…
Classical, interferometric, optical lithography is diffraction limited to writing features of a size lambda/2 or greater, where lambda is the optical wavelength. Using nonclassical photon number states, entangled N at a time, we show that it is possible to write features of minimum size lambda/(2N) in an N-photon absorbing substrate. This result surpasses the usual classical diffraction limit by a factor of N. Since the number of features that can be etched on a two-dimensional surface scales inversely as the square of the feature size, this allows one to write a factor of N^2 more elements on…
High-dimensional quantum key distribution (HDQKD) offers the possibility of high secure-key rate with high photon-information efficiency. We consider HDQKD based on the time-energy entanglement produced by spontaneous parametric downconversion, and show that it is secure against collective attacks. Its security rests upon visibility data -- obtained from Franson and conjugate-Franson interferometers -- that probe photon-pair frequency correlations and arrival-time correlations. From these measurements an upper bound can be established on the eavesdropper's Holevo information by translating the…
Continuous-variable encoding of quantum information in the optical domain has recently yielded large temporal and spectral entangled states instrumental for quantum computing and quantum communication. We introduce a protocol for the generation of spatial multipartite entanglement based on phase-matching of a propagation eigenmode in a monolithic photonic device: the array of quadratic nonlinear waveguides. We theoretically demonstrate in the spontaneous parametric downconversion regime the generation of large multipartite entangled states useful for multimode quantum networks. Our protocol is…
Photonic quantum technology increasingly uses frequency encoding to enable higher quantum information density and noise resilience. Pulsed time-frequency modes (TFM) represent a unique class of spectrally encoded quantum states of light that enable a complete framework for quantum information processing. Here, we demonstrate a technique for direct generation of entangled TFM-encoded states in single-pass, tailored downconversion processes. We achieve unprecedented quality in state generation---high rates, heralding efficiency and state fidelity---as characterised via highly resolved time-of-fl…
Non-classical states of light are of fundamental importance for emerging quantum technologies. All optics experiments producing multi-qubit entangled states have until now relied on outcome post-selection, a procedure where only the measurement results corresponding to the desired state are considered. This method severely limits the usefulness of the resulting entangled states. Here, we show the direct production of polarization-entangled photon triplets by cascading two entangled downconversion processes. Detecting the triplets with high efficiency superconducting nanowire single-photon dete…
Highly entangled quantum networks cluster states lie at the heart of recent approaches to quantum computing \cite{Nielsen2006,Lloyd2012}. Yet, the current approach for constructing optical quantum networks does so one node at a time \cite{Furusawa2008,Furusawa2009,Peng2012}, which lacks scalability. Here we demonstrate the \emph{single-step} fabrication of a multimode quantum network from the parametric downconversion of femtosecond frequency combs. Ultrafast pulse shaping \cite{weiner2000} is employed to characterize the comb's spectral entanglement \cite{vanLoock2003}. Each of the 511 possib…
Quantum entanglement shared between more than two particles is essential to foundational questions in quantum mechanics, and upcoming quantum information technologies. So far, up to 14 two-dimensional qubits have been entangled, and an open question remains if one can also demonstrate entanglement of higher-dimensional discrete properties of more than two particles. A promising route is the use of the photon orbital angular momentum (OAM), which enables implementation of novel quantum information protocols, and the study of fundamentally new quantum states. To date, only two of such multidimen…

We report new results regarding a source of polarization entangled photon-pairs created by the process of spontaneous parametric downconversion in two orthogonally oriented, periodically poled, bulk KTiOPO4 crystals (PPKTP). The source emits light colinearly at the non-degenerate wavelengths of 810 nm and 1550 nm, and is optimized for single-mode optical fiber collection and long-distance quantum communication. The configuration favors long crystals, which promote a high photon-pair production rate at a narrow bandwidth, together with a high pair-probability in fibers. The quality of entanglem…
Doubly-parametric quantum transducers, such as electro-opto-mechanical devices, are quickly approaching quantum operation as decoherence mechanisms such as thermal noise, loss, and limited cooperativities are improved. These devices show potential as the critical link between quantum information contained at frequencies as disparate as those in the optical and microwave domains, thus enabling applications such as long distance networking of superconducting quantum computers. However, the requirements on the operating parameters of the transducers necessary to achieve quantum operation have yet…
We address joint photodetection as a method to discriminate between the classical correlations of a thermal beam divided by a beam splitter and the quantum entanglement of a twin-beam obtained by parametric downconversion. We show that for intense beams of light the detection of the difference photocurrent may be used, in principle, in order to reveal entanglement, while the simple measurement of the correlation coefficient is not sufficient. We have experimentally measured the correlation coefficient and the variance of the difference photocurrent on several classical and quantum states. Resu…
We experimentally demonstrate the first quantum system entangled in every degree of freedom (hyperentangled). Using pairs of photons produced in spontaneous parametric downconversion, we verify entanglement by observing a Bell-type inequality violation in each degree of freedom: polarization, spatial mode and time-energy. We also produce and characterize maximally hyperentangled states and novel states simultaneously exhibiting both quantum and classical correlations. Finally, we report the tomography of a 2x2x3x3 system (36-dimensional Hilbert space), which we believe is the first reported ph…
The experimental realization of multidimensional quantum states may lead to unexplored and interesting physics, as well as advanced quantum communication protocols. The orbital angular momentum of photons is a well suitable discrete degree of freedom for implementing high-dimensional quantum systems. The standard method to generate and manipulate such photon modes is to use bulk and fixed optics. Here the authors demonstrate the utilization of a spatial light modulator to manipulate the orbital angular momentum of entangled photons generated in spontaneous parametric downconversion. They show …
Entanglement in multipartite systems can be achieved by the coherent superposition of product states, generated through a universal unitary transformation, followed by spontaneous parametric down-conversions and path identification.
Entanglement in high-dimensional quantum systems, where one or more degrees of freedom of light are involved, offers increased information capacities and enables new quantum protocols. Here, we demonstrate a functional source of high-dimensional, noise-resilient hyperentangled states encoded in time-frequency and vector-vortex structured modes, which in turn carry single-particle entanglement between polarisation and orbital angular momentum. Pairing nonlinearity-engineered parametric downconversion in an interferometric scheme with spin-to-orbital-angular-momentum conversion, we generate high…
Pre-shared entanglement can significantly boost communication rates in the regime of high thermal noise, and a low-brightness transmitter. In this regime, the ratio between the entanglement-assisted capacity and the Holevo capacity, the maximum reliable-communication rate permitted by quantum mechanics without any pre-shared entanglement as a resource, is known to scale as $\log(1/N_S)$, where $N_S \ll 1$ is the mean transmitted photon number per mode. This is especially promising in enabling a large boost to radio-frequency communications in the weak-transmit-power regime, by exploiting pre-s…
How can one detect entanglement between multiple optical paths sharing a single photon? We address this question by proposing a scalable protocol, which only uses local measurements where single photon detection is combined with small displacement operations. The resulting entanglement witness does not require post-selection, nor assumptions about the photon number in each path. Furthermore, it guarantees that entanglement lies in a subspace with at most one photon per optical path and reveals genuinely multipartite entanglement. We demonstrate its scalability and resistance to loss by perform…
Based on a scheme that produces an entanglement between the spin and the path variables of a single spin-1/2 particle (qubit) using a beam-splitter and a spin-flipper, we formulate a procedure for transferring this intraparticle hybrid entanglement to an interparticle entanglement between the spin variables of two other spatially separated spin-1/2 particles which never interact with each other during the entire process. This procedure of entanglement swapping is accomplished by a Mach-Zehnder setup in conjunction with the Stern-Gerlach measuring device, using suitable unitary operations. The …
We demonstrate a novel approach of violating position dependent Bell inequalities by photons emitted via independent photon sources in free space. We trace this violation back to path entanglement created a posteriori by the selection of modes due to the process of detection.
Large photon-number path entanglement is an important resource for enhanced precision measurements and quantum imaging. We present a general constructive protocol to create any large photon number path-entangled state based on the conditional detection of single photons. The influence of imperfect detectors is considered and an asymptotic scaling law is derived.
We demonstrate controlled entanglement routing between bunching and antibunching path-entangled two-photon states in an unbalanced Mach-Zehnder interferometer (UMZI), in which the routing process is controlled by the relative phase difference in the UMZI. Regarding bunching and antibunching path-entangled two-photon states as two virtual ports, we can consider the UMZI as a controlled entanglement router, which bases on the coherent manipulation of entanglement. Half of the entanglement within the input two-photon state is coherently routed between the two virtual ports, while the other is los…
We report the experimental realization of heralded distribution of single-photon path entanglement at telecommunication wavelengths in a repeater-like architecture. The entanglement is established upon detection of a single photon, originating from one of two spontaneous parametric down conversion photon pair sources, after erasing the photon's which-path information. In order to certify the entanglement, we use an entanglement witness which does not rely on post-selection. We herald entanglement between two locations, separated by a total distance of 2 km of optical fiber, at a rate of 1.6 kH…
