X-ray luminosity ($L_X$) originating from high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) is tightly correlated with the host galaxy's star-formation rate (SFR). We explore this connection at sub-galactic scales spanning ${\sim}$7 dex in SFR and ${\sim}$8 dex in specific SFR (sSFR). There is good agreement with established relations down to ${\rm SFR {\simeq} 10^{-3}\,M_\odot \, yr^{-1}}$, below which an excess of X-ray luminosity emerges. This excess likely arises from low mass X-ray binaries. The intrinsic scatter of the $L_X$-SFR relation is constant, not correlated with SFR. Different star formation indicators scale with $L_X$ in different ways, and we attribute the differences to the effect of star formation history. The SFR derived from H$α$ shows the tightest correlation with X-ray luminosity because H$α$ emission probes stellar populations with ages similar to HMXB formation timescales, but the H$α$-based SFR is reliable only for $\rm sSFR{>}10^{-12}\,M_\odot \, yr^{-1}/M_\odot$.
In 2010 Spergel introduced an alternative to the traditional Sersic form for galactic luminosity profiles based on modified Bessel functions of the second kind. His motivation was the desire for an accurate one-parameter profile form with a simple Fourier transform (in contrast to the Fourier transform of the Sersic profile which can't be written in closed form), but we have found that the Spergel profile almost universally makes integrals easier when it replaces the Sersic profile in the integrand. In the original paper on the subject Spergel noted that his profile seems to fit galaxies on av…
The luminosity of [C II] is used to probe the star formation rate in galaxies, but the correlation breaks down in some active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Models of the [C II] emission from galactic nuclei do not include the influence of X-rays on the carbon ionization balance, which may be a factor in reducing the [C II] luminosity. We calculate the [C II] luminosity in galactic nuclei under the influence of bright sources of X-rays. We solve the balance equation of the ionization states of carbon as a function of X-ray flux, electron, atomic hydrogen, and molecular hydrogen density. These are inp…
Low-luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei, i.e. L_bol/L_edd ~ 10^-6 - 10^-3, constitute the bulk population of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs). Powerful jets, common in these objects, are a crucial source of feedback energy driving mass outflows into the host galaxy and the intergalactic medium. This paper reports the first direct measurement of powerful mass outflows traced by the forbidden high ionization gas in the low luminosity AGN NGC1386 at scales of a few parsecs from the central engine. The high angular resolution of the data allows us to directly measure the location, morphology and kinema…
Most active supermassive black holes (SMBH) in present-day galaxies are underfed and consist of low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGN). They have multiwavelength broadband spectral energy distributions (SED) dominated by non-thermal processes which are quite different from those of the brighter, more distant quasars. Modelling the observed SEDs of LLAGNs is currently challenging, given the large computational expenses required. In this work, we used machine learning (ML) methods to generate model SEDs and fit sparse observations of LLAGNs. Our ML model consisted of a neural network and …
Ultraviolet (UV) and X-ray photons from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) can ionize hydrogen in the intergalactic medium (IGM). We solve radiative transfer around AGNs in high redshift to evaluate the 21-cm line emission from the neutral hydrogen in the IGM and obtain the radial profile of the brightness temperature in the epoch of reionization. The ionization profile extends over 10 [Mpc] comoving distance which can be observed in the order of 10 [arcmin]. From estimation of the radio galaxy number counts with high sensitivity observation through the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), we investigate …
We construct the rest-frame 2--10 keV intrinsic X-ray luminosity function of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) from a combination of X-ray surveys from the all-sky Swift BAT survey to the Chandra Deep Field-South. We use ~3200 AGNs in our analysis, which covers six orders of magnitude in flux. The inclusion of the XMM and Chandra COSMOS data has allowed us to investigate the detailed behavior of the XLF and evolution. In deriving our XLF, we take into account realistic AGN spectrum templates, absorption corrections, and probability density distributions in photometric redshift. We present an analy…
In this manuscript, we check the well-known correlation between \oiii luminosity and continuum luminosity (\loiiicon) for AGN by a large sample of 1982 SDSS QSOs with $z<0.8$ and with high quality spectra. The strong correlation of \loiiicon can be found, similar as previous results for AGN. Moreover, among the 1982 QSOs, there are 708 QSOs with the [O~{\sc iii}]$λ$5007Å described by two components: one core component plus one extended component. Based on the luminosity from the core components ($L_{\rm [O~\textsc{iii}],~narrow}$) and from the extended components ($L_{\rm [O~\textsc{iii}],~ext…
We investigate and quantify the observed scatter in the empirical relationship between the broad line region size R and the luminosity of the active galactic nucleus (AGN), in order to better understand its origin. This study is motivated by the indispensable role of this relationship in the mass estimation of cosmologically distant black holes, but may also be relevant to the recently proposed application of this relationship for measuring cosmic distances. We study six nearby reverberation-mapped AGN for which simultaneous UV and optical monitoring data exist. We also examine the long-term o…
We present single-epoch black-hole mass (\mbh) estimators based on the rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) \MgII\ 2798Å and optical \Hb\ 4861Å emission lines. To enlarge the luminosity range of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), we combine the 31 reverberation-mapped AGNs with relatively low luminosities from Bahk et al. 2019, 47 moderate-luminosity AGNs from Woo et al. 2018, and 425 high-luminosity AGNs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The combined sample has the monochromatic luminosity at 5100Å ranging $\mathrm{\log λL_{5100} \sim 41.3-46.5}$ \ergs, over the range of 5.5 $<$ $\log$\mbh\ $<$ 9.…
Low-Luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei (LLAGN) are characterized for low radiative efficiency, much less than one percent of their Eddington limit. Nevertheless, their main energy release may be mechanical, opposite to powerful AGN classes like Seyfert and Quasars. This work reports on the jet-driven mechanical energy and the corresponding mass outflow deposited by the jet in the central 170~parsecs of the nearby LLAGN ESO428-G14. The jet kinetic output is traced through the coronal line [Si vi] $λ$19641 Å. It is shown that its radial extension, up to hundreds of parsecs, requires a combination…
Low luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGN) probe accretion physics in the low Eddington regime and can provide additional clues about galaxy evolution. AGN variability is ubiquitous and thus provides a reliable tool for finding AGN. We analyze the All-Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae light curves of 1218 galaxies with $g<14$ mag and Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectra in search of AGN. We find 37 objects that are both variable and have AGN-like structure functions, which is about 3% of the sample. The majority of the variability selected AGN are LLAGN with Eddington ratios ranging from $10^…
The radius-luminosity (R-L) relationship of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) established by the reverberation mapping (RM) observations has been widely used as a single-epoch black hole mass estimator in the research of large AGN samples. However, the recent RM campaigns discovered that the AGNs with high accretion rates show shorter time lags by factors of a few comparing with the predictions from the R-L relationship. The explanation of the shortened time lags has not been finalized yet. We collect 8 different single-epoch spectral properties to investigate how the shortening of the time lags c…
Arp 187 is one of the fading active galactic nuclei (AGN), whose AGN activity is currently decreasing in luminosity. We investigate the observational signatures of AGN in Arp 187, which trace various physical scales from less than 0.1 pc to the nearly 10 kpc, to estimate the longterm luminosity change over $10^{4}$ years. The VLA 5 GHz, 8 GHz, and the ALMA 133 GHz images reveal bimodal jet lobes with $\sim$5 kpc size and the absence of the central radio-core. The 6dF optical spectrum shows that Arp 187 hosts narrow line region with the estimated size of $\sim$1 kpc, and the line strengths give…
We present optical luminosity functions (LFs) of galaxies in the $^{0.1}g$, $^{0.1}r$, and $^{0.1}i$ bands, calculated using data in $\sim 40$ $deg^{2}$ sky area of LAMOST Complete Spectroscopic Survey of Pointing Area (LaCoSSPAr) in Southern Galactic Cap. Redshifts for galaxies brighter $r = 18.1$ were obtained mainly with LAMOST. In each band, LFs derived using both parametric and non-parametric maximum likelihood methods agree well with each other. In the $^{0.1}r$ band, our fitting parameters of the Schechter function are $ϕ_{*}=(1.65\pm0.36)\times10^{-2}h^{3}Mpc^{-3}$, $M_{*}=-20.69\pm0.0…
We present the LyA emission line luminosity function (LF) of the Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in the first release of the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment Survey (HETDEX) AGN catalog (Liu et al. 2022, Paper I). The AGN are selected either by emission-line pairs characteristic of AGN or by single broad emission line, free of any photometric pre-selections (magnitude/color/morphology). The sample consists of 2,346 AGN spanning 1.88<z<3.53, covering an effective area of 30.61 deg^2. Approximately 2.6 of the HETDEX AGN are not detected at $>5σ$ confidence at r~26 in the deepest $r$-ba…
The Galactic HII region luminosity function (LF) is an important metric for understanding global star formation properties of the Milky Way, but only a few studies have been done and all use relatively small numbers of HII regions. We use a sample of 797 first Galactic quadrant HII regions compiled from the WISE Catalog of Galactic HII Regions to examine the form of the LF at multiple infrared and radio wavelengths. Our sample is statistically complete for all regions powered by single stars of type O9.5V and earlier. We fit the LF at each wavelength with single and double power laws. Averagin…
We utilize mid-infrared multi-epoch data from Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) over a $\sim10$-year period in W1 (3.4$μ$m) and W2 (4.6$μ$m) bands to investigate the structure of dusty torus in low-redshift ($0.15<z\le 0.4$) active galactic nuclei (AGN). We calculate a Spearman correlation coefficient ($r_{12}$) between W1 magnitude and W1$-$W2 color based on the light curve in individual objects. Interestingly, $r_{12}$ spans a broad range from $-1$ to $1$, and is detected to be correlated with mean W1$-$W2 color and AGN bolometric luminosity, in the sense that objects with blue W1$-…
We combined mapping-mode mid-infrared Spitzer spectra with complementary infrared imaging to perform a spatially resolved study of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) emission from the central regions of 66 nearby galaxies, roughly evenly divided into star-forming systems and low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs). In conjunction with similar measurements available for quasars, we aim to understand the physical properties of PAHs across a broad range of black hole accretion power, with the goal of identifying observational diagnostics that can be used to probe the effect of AGNs on t…
Radiatively inefficient accretion flows (RIAFs) in low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs) have been suggested as cosmic-ray and neutrino sources that may largely contribute to the observed diffuse neutrino intensity. We show that this scenario naturally predicts hadronic multi-TeV gamma-ray excesses around Galactic centers. The protons accelerated in the RIAF in Sagittarius A$^*$ (Sgr A$^*$) escape and interact with dense molecular gas surrounding Sgr A$^*$, which is known as the central molecular zone (CMZ), and produce gamma rays as well as neutrinos. Based on a theoretical model tha…
Fermi Large Area Telescope data reveal an excess of GeV gamma rays from the direction of the Galactic Center and bulge. Several explanations have been proposed for this excess including an unresolved population of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) and self-annihilating dark matter. It has been claimed that a key discriminant for or against the MSP explanation can be extracted from the properties of the luminosity function describing this source population. Specifically, is the luminosity function of the putative MSPs in the Galactic Center consistent with that characterizing the resolved MSPs in the …
We present the near-infrared observations of population II Cepheids in the Galactic bulge from VVV survey. We identify 340 population II Cepheids in the Galactic bulge from VVV survey based on their match with OGLE-III Catalogue. The single-epoch $JH$ and multi-epoch $K_s$ observations complement the accurate periods and optical $(VI)$ mean-magnitudes from OGLE. The sample consisting of BL Herculis and W Virginis subtypes is used to derive period-luminosity relations after correcting mean-magnitudes for the extinction. Our $K_s$-band period-luminosity relation, $K_s = -2.189(0.056)~[\log(P) - …
We report millimeter-VLBI results of low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (M 84 and M 87) up to 88 GHz with source-frequency phase-referencing observations. We detected the weak VLBI core and obtained the first image of M 84 at 88 GHz. The derived brightness temperature of M 84 core was about 7.2$\times$10$^9$ K, which could serve as a lower limit as the core down to 30 Schwarzschild radii was still un-resolved in our 88 GHz observations. We successfully determined the core-shifts of M 87 at 22-44 GHz and 44-88 GHz through source-frequency phase-referencing technique. The jet apex of M 87 cou…

In deep X-ray surveys, active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with a broad range of luminosities have been identified. However, cosmologically distant low-luminosity AGN (LLAGN, $L_{\mathrm{X}} \lesssim 10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$) identification still poses a challenge due to significant contamination from host galaxies. Based on the 7 Ms Chandra Deep Field-South (CDF-S) survey, the longest timescale ($\sim 17$ years) deep X-ray survey to date, we utilize an X-ray variability selection technique to search for LLAGNs that remain unidentified among the CDF-S X-ray sources. We find 13 variable sources from 110…
A previous narrow-slit ($0.1$ arcsec) Hubble Space Telescope observation unveiled a broad relativistic H$α$ profile in NGC3147, a low-luminosity ($\mathrm{L_{bol}}\sim10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$), low-Eddington ratio ($\mathrm{L_{bol}/L_{Edd}}\sim10^{-4}$) active galactic nucleus (AGN), formerly believed to be a candidate true type 2 AGN intrinsically lacking the broad-line region. The new observations presented here confirm the double-peaked profile of the H$α$ line, which further shows variability both in flux and in the inner radius of the emitting disc with respect to the previous epoch. Toward the Standard Population Synthesis Model of the X-Ray Background: Evolution of X-Ray Luminosity and Absorption Functions of Active Galactic Nuclei Including Compton-Thick Populations
We present the hard-band ($2-10\,\mathrm{keV}$) X-ray luminosity function (HXLF) of $0.5-2\,\mathrm{keV}$ band selected AGN at high redshift. We have assembled a sample of 141 AGN at $3<z\lesssim5$ from X-ray surveys of different size and depth, in order to sample different regions in the $ L_X - z$ plane. The HXLF is fitted in the range $\mathrm{logL_X\sim43-45}$ with standard analytical evolutionary models through a maximum likelihood procedure. The evolution of the HXLF is well described by a pure density evolution, with the AGN space density declining by a factor of $\sim10$ from $z=3$ to …
The optical Fundamental Plane of black hole activity relates radio continuum luminosity of Active Galactic Nuclei to [O III] luminosity and black hole mass. We examine the environments of low redshift ($z<0.2$) radio-selected AGN, quantified through galaxy clustering, and find that halo mass provides similar mass scalings to black hole mass in the Fundamental Plane relations. AGN properties are strongly environment-dependent: massive haloes are more likely to host radiatively inefficient (low-excitation) radio AGN, as well as a higher fraction of radio luminous, extended sources. These AGN pop…
Massive black hole binaries are naturally predicted in the context of the hierarchical model of structure formation. The binaries that manage to lose most of their angular momentum can coalesce to form a single remnant. In the last stages of this process, the holes undergo an extremely loud phase of gravitational wave emission, possibly detectable by current and future probes. The theoretical effort towards obtaining a coherent physical picture of the binary path down to coalescence is still underway. In this paper, for the first time, we take advantage of observational studies of active galac…
We present the serendipitous discovery of a low luminosity nova occurring in a symbiotic binary star system in the Milky Way. We lay out the extensive archival data alongside new follow-up observations related to the stellar object V$^*$ CN Cha in the constellation of Chamaeleon. The object had long period ($\sim\! 250\,$day), high amplitude ($\sim\! 3\,$mag) optical variability in its recent past, preceding an increase in optical brightness by $\sim\! 8\,$magnitudes and a persistence at this luminosity for about 3 years, followed by a period of $\sim\! 1.4\,{\rm mag}\,{\rm yr}^{-1}$ dimming. …
For most of their lifetime, super-massive black holes (SMBHs) commonly found in galactic nuclei obtain mass from the ambient at a rate well below the Eddington limit, which is mediated by a radiatively inefficient, hot accretion flow. Both theory and numerical simulations predict that a strong wind must exist in such hot accretion flows. The wind is of special interest not only because it is an indispensable ingredient of accretion, but perhaps more importantly, it is believed to play a crucial role in the evolution of the host galaxy via the so-called kinetic mode AGN feedback. Observational …
We perform simulations to study the effects of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) radiation and wind feedback on the properties of slowly rotating accretion flow at parsec scale. We find that when only radiative feedback is considered, outflows can be produced by the radiation pressure due to Thomson scattering. The mass flux of outflow is comparable to that of inflow. Although strong outflow is present, the luminosity of AGN can be easily super-Eddington. When wind feedback is also taken into account, the mass flux of outflow does not change much. Consequently, the luminosity of the central AGN ca…
We report the detection of a heavily obscured Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) in the luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) NGC 6286, identified in a 17.5 ks NuSTAR observation. The source is in an early merging stage, and was targeted as part of our ongoing NuSTAR campaign observing local luminous and ultra-luminous infrared galaxies in different merger stages. NGC 6286 is clearly detected above 10 keV and, by including the quasi-simultaneous Swift/XRT and archival XMM-Newton and Chandra data, we find that the source is heavily obscured [$N_{\rm\,H}\simeq (0.95-1.32)\times 10^{24}\rm\,cm^{-2}$], with …
Galactic outflows can be powered either by nuclear starbursts (SB) or active galactic nuclei (AGN). It has been argued that extreme starbursts can power extreme outflows, without the need to invoke AGN feedback. However, contributions from past and/or hidden AGN activity cannot be ruled out. Here, we constrain the potential role of the central black hole in driving powerful outflows in starburst galaxies (with no sign of ongoing AGN activity). We examine whether the galactic outflows can be explained by AGN luminosity evolution in the framework of our AGN `radiative dusty feedback' scenario. W…
We present a sub-arcsec resolution radio imaging survey of a sample of 76 low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGN) that were previously not detected with the Very Large Array at 15 GHz. Compact, parsec-scale radio emission has been detected above a flux density of 40 $μ$Jy in 60% (45 of 76) of the LLAGN sample. We detect 20 out of 31 (64%) low-ionization nuclear emission-line region (LINER) nuclei, ten out of 14 (71%) low-luminosity Seyfert galaxies, and 15 out of 31 (48%) transition objects. We use this sample to explore correlations between different emission lines and the radio luminos…
The Fermi Bubbles: Giant, Multi-Billion-Year-Old Reservoirs of Galactic Center Cosmic Rays
