We utilize mid-infrared multi-epoch data from Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) over a $\sim10$-year period in W1 (3.4$μ$m) and W2 (4.6$μ$m) bands to investigate the structure of dusty torus in low-redshift ($0.15<z\le 0.4$) active galactic nuclei (AGN). We calculate a Spearman correlation coefficient ($r_{12}$) between W1 magnitude and W1$-$W2 color based on the light curve in individual objects. Interestingly, $r_{12}$ spans a broad range from $-1$ to $1$, and is detected to be correlated with mean W1$-$W2 color and AGN bolometric luminosity, in the sense that objects with blue W1$-$W2 color and low AGN luminosity tend to become redder (bluer) with increasing (decreasing) W1 brightness in the light curve (i.e. $r_{12} < 0$), although the correlation of $r_{12}$ with the bolometric luminosity is relatively weak. The fit for the spectral energy distribution reveals a significant contribution from the host galaxy in the W1 and W2 bands. However, the dependencies of $r_{12}$ on W1$-$W2 color and AGN luminosity still persist even after careful elimination of the host light contribution. We propose that this result can be explained if covering factor of the hot dust component decreases as AGN luminosity increases.
Using 8.4 years of photometry from the AllWISE/NEOWISE multi-epoch catalogs, we compare the mid-infrared variability properties of a sample of 2197 dwarf galaxies (M_stellar < 2 x 10^9 h^-2 M_sun) to a sample of 6591 more massive galaxies (M_stellar >= 10^10 h^-2 M_sun) matched in mid-infrared apparent magnitude. We find only 2 dwarf galaxies with mid-infrared variability, a factor of ~10 less frequent than the more massive galaxies (p = 6 x 10^-6), consistent with previous findings of optical variability in low-mass and dwarf galaxies using data with a similar baseline and cadence. Within the…
Recent mid-infrared observations of young stellar objects have found significant variations possibly indicative of changes in the structure of the circumstellar disk. Previous models of this variability have been restricted to axisymmetric perturbations in the disk. We consider simple models of a non-axisymmetric variation in the inner disk, such as a warp or a spiral wave. We find that the precession of these non-axisymmetric structures produce negligible flux variations but a change in the height of these structures can lead to significant changes in the mid-infrared flux. Applying these mod…
It is known that some active galactic nuclei (AGNs) transited from type 1 to type 2 or vice versa. There are two explanations for the so-called changing look AGNs: one is the dramatic change of the obscuration along the line-of-sight, the other is the variation of accretion rate. In this paper, we report the detection of large amplitude variations in the mid-infrared luminosity during the transitions in 10 changing look AGNs using WISE and newly released NEOWISE-R data. The mid-infrared light curves of 10 objects echoes the variability in the optical band with a time lag expected for dust repr…
The Decadal IRAC Bootes Survey is a mid-IR variability survey of the ~9 sq. deg. of the NDWFS Bootes Field and extends the time baseline of its predecessor, the Spitzer Deep, Wide-Field Survey (SDWFS), from 4 to 10 years. The Spitzer Space Telescope visited the field five times between 2004 and 2014 at 3.6 and 4.5 microns. We provide the difference image analysis photometry for a half a million mostly extragalactic sources. In mid-IR color-color plane, sources with quasar colors constitute the largest variability class (75%), 16% of the variable objects have stellar colors and the remaining 9%…
Identifying Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) through their X-ray emission is efficient, but necessarily biased against X-ray-faint objects. We aim to characterize this bias by comparing X-ray-selected AGNs to the ones identified through optical variability and mid-IR colours. We present a catalogue of AGNs selected through optical variability using all publicly available z-band Hubble Space Telescope images in the GOODS-South field. For all objects in the catalogue, we compute X-ray upper limits or discuss detections in the deepest available 7 Ms Chandra Deep Field South images and present the Sp…
Changing look active-galatic-nuclei (CL AGNs) can yield considerable insight into accretion physics as well as the co-evolution of black holes and their host galaxies. A large sample of these CL AGNs is essential to achieve the latter goal. We propose an effective method to select CL candidates from spectroscopic quasar catalogs using the mid-infrared (MIR) variability information derived from ALL-WISE/NEOWISE data releases. Our primary selection criteria include both a large amplitude flux variation and a transition of MIR color from an AGN to a normal galaxy. A pilot spectroscopic follow-up …
We present a survey of the Orion A and B molecular clouds undertaken with the IRAC and MIPS instruments onboard Spitzer. In total, five distinct fields were mapped covering 9 sq. degrees in five mid-IR bands spanning 3-24 microns. The survey includes the Orion Nebula Cluster, the Lynds 1641, 1630 and 1622 dark clouds, and the NGC 2023, 2024, 2068 and 2071 nebulae. These data are merged with the 2MASS point source catalog to generate a catalog of eight band photometry. We identify 3479 dusty young stellar objects (YSOs) in the Orion molecular clouds by searching for point sources with mid-IR co…
We study the relationship between the mid-infrared and sub-mm variability of deeply embedded protostars using the multi-epoch data from the Wide Infrared Survey Explorer ($WISE$/NEOWISE) and the ongoing James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) transient survey. Our search for signs of stochastic (random) and/or secular (roughly monotonic in time) variability in a sample of 59 young stellar objects (YSOs) revealed that 35 are variable in at least one of the two surveys. This variability is dominated by secular changes. Of those objects with secular variability, 14 objects ($22\%$ of the sample) sho…
We report on the first detection of extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) absorption variability in the NeVIII 770,780 mini-broad absorption line (mini-BAL) in the spectrum of the quasar (QSO) PG 1206+459. The observed equivalent width (EW) of the NeVIII doublet show a ~4 sigma variation over a timescale of 2.8 months in the QSO's rest-frame. Both members of the NeVIII doublet exhibit non-black saturation, indicating partial coverage of the continuum source. An increase in the NeVIII covering fraction from f_c = 0.59\pm0.05 to 0.72\pm0.03 is observed over the same period. The NeVIII profiles are too highl…

Variability in young stellar objects (YSOs) can be caused by various time-dependent phenomena associated with star formation, including accretion rates, geometric changes in the circumstellar disks, stochastic hydromagnetic interactions between stellar surfaces and inner disk edges, reconnections within the stellar magnetosphere, and hot/cold spots on stellar surfaces. We uncover and characterize $\sim$1700 variables from a sample of $\sim$5400 YSOs in nearby low-mass star-forming regions using mid-IR light curves obtained from the 6.5-years NEOWISE All Sky Survey. The mid-IR variability trace…
The IceCube instrument detected a high-energy cosmic neutrino event on 2017 September 22 (IceCube_170922A, IceCube Collaboration 2018), which the electromagnetic follow-up campaigns associated with the flaring $γ$-ray blazar TXS 0506$+$056 (e.g., Padovani et al., 2018). We investigated the mid-infrared variability of the source by using the available single exposure data of the WISE satellite at $3.4$ and $4.6μ$m. TXS 0506$+$056 experienced a $\sim 30$% brightening in both of these bands a few days prior to the neutrino event. Additional intraday infrared variability can be detected in 2010. S…
Context. Recent NuSTAR observations revealed a somewhat unexpected increase in the X-ray flux of the nucleus of NGC 1068. We expect the infrared emission of the dusty torus to react on the intrinsic changes of the accretion disk. Aims. We aim to investigate the origin of the X-ray variation by investigating the response of the mid-infrared environment. Methods. We obtained single-aperture and interferometric mid-infrared measurements and directly compared the measurements observed before and immediately after the X-ray variations. The average correlated and single-aperture fluxes as well as th…
Using data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer we studied the mid infrared 3.4 $μ$m (W1-band) and 4.6 $μ$m (W2-band) flux variability of $γ$-ray emitting blazars. Our sample consists of 460 flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and 575 BL Lacertae (BL Lac) objects. On intra-day timescales, the median amplitude of variability ($σ_{m}$) for FSRQs is 0.04$^{+0.03}_{-0.02}$ mag and 0.05$^{+0.03}_{-0.02}$ mag in W1 and W2 bands. For BL Lacs we found median $σ_{m}$ in W1(W2) bands of 0.04$^{+0.01}_{-0.02}$ (0.04$^{+0.02}_{-0.02}$) mag. On long timescales, for FSRQs we found a median $σ_{m}$ o…
We systematically investigate the mid-infrared (MIR; $λ>3 ~μ$m) time variability of uniformly selected $\sim800$ massive young stellar objects (MYSOs) from the Red MSX Source (RMS) survey. Out of the 806 sources, we obtain reliable 9-year-long MIR magnitude variability data of 331 sources at the 3.4~$μ$m (W1) and 4.6~$μ$m (W2) bands by cross-matching the MYSO positions with ALLWISE and NEOWISE catalogs. After applying the variability selections using ALLWISE data, we identify 5 MIR-variable candidates. The light curves show various classes, with the periodic, plateau-like, and dipper features.…
We present the color and flux variability analysis at 3.4 μm (W1-band) and 4.6 μm (W 2-band) of 492 narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) galaxies using archival data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). In the WISE color-color, (W1 - W2) versus (W2 - W3) diagram, ~58% of the NLSy1 galaxies of our sample lie in the region occupied by the blazar category of active galactic nuclei (AGN). The mean W1 - W2 color of candidate variable NLSy1 galaxies is $0.99 \pm 0.18$ mag. The average amplitude of variability is $0.11 \pm 0.07$ mag in long-term (multi-year) with no difference in variability…
We present mid-infrared (IR) light curves of the Ultraluminous X-ray Source (ULX) Holmberg II X-1 from observations taken between 2014 January 13 and 2017 January 5 with the \textit{Spitzer Space Telescope} at 3.6 and 4.5 $μ$m in the \textit{Spitzer} Infrared Intensive Transients Survey (SPIRITS). The mid-IR light curves, which reveal the first detection of mid-IR variability from a ULX, is determined to arise primarily from dust emission rather than from a jet or an accretion disk outflow. We derived the evolution of the dust temperature ($T_\mathrm{d}\sim600 - 800$ K), IR luminosity ($L_\mat…
We present absorption variability results for 134 bona fide \mgii\ broad absorption line (BAL) quasars at 0.46~$\lesssim z \lesssim$~2.3 covering days to $\sim$ 10 yr in the rest frame. We use multiple-epoch spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, which has delivered the largest such BAL-variability sample ever studied. \mgii-BAL identifications and related measurements are compiled and presented in a catalog. We find a remarkable time-dependent asymmetry in EW variation from the sample, such that weakening troughs outnumber strengthening troughs, the first report of such a phenomenon in BA…
We present the discovery of the simultaneous flux variation of a massive young stellar object (MYSO) G036.70+00.09 (G036.70) both in the maser emission and mid-infrared (MIR;$λ=3$--$5$~$μ$m) bands. Utilizing the ALLWISE and NEOWISE archival databases covering a long time span of approximately 10 years with a cadence of 6 months, we confirmed that G036.70 indicates a stochastic year-long MIR variability with no signs of the WISE band color change of W1 (3.4~$μ$m) $-$W2 (4.6~$μ$m). Cross-matching the MIR data set with the high-cadence 6.7~GHz class II methanol maser flux using a Hitachi 32-m rad…
The characteristics of IR properties and MIR variability of RSGs in the LMC are analyzed based on 12 bands of NIR to MIR co-added data from 2MASS, Spitzer and WISE, and $\sim$6.6 years of MIR time-series data collected by the ALLWISE and NEOWISE-R projects. 773 RSGs candidates were compiled from the literature and verified by using the CMD, SED and MIR variability. About 15\% of valid targets in the $IRAC1-IRAC2$/$IRAC2-IRAC3$ diagram may show PAH emission. We show that arbitrary dereddening Q parameters related to the IRAC4, S9W, WISE3, WISE4, and MIPS24 bands could be constructed based on a …
The continued operation of the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) combined with several ground-based optical transient surveys (e.g., CRTS, ASAS-SN and PTF) offer an unprecedented opportunity to explore the dust structures in luminous AGNs. We use these data for a mid-IR dust reverberation mapping (RM) study of 87 archetypal Palomar-Green quasars at $z\lesssim0.5$. To cope with various contaminations of the photometry data and the sparse time sampling of the light curves, procedures to combine these datasets and retrieve the dust RM signals have been developed. We find $\sim$70% of the…
We assemble a catalogue of 488 spectroscopically confirmed very high ($z\geq5.00$) redshift quasars and report their near- ($ZYJHK_{s}/K$) and mid- (WISE W1234) infrared properties. 97\% of the VH$z$Q sample is detected in one or more NIR ($ZYJHK/K_{s}$) band, with lack of coverage rather than lack of depth being the reason for the non-detections. 389 (80\%) of the very high redshift quasars are detected at 3.4$μ$m in the W1 band from the unWISE catalog and all of the $z\geq7$ quasars are detected in both unWISE W1 and W2. Using archival WFCAM/UKIRT and VIRCAM/VISTA data we check for photometr…

We have conducted an extensive X-ray spectral variability study of a sample of 20 Compton-thin type II galaxies using broad band spectra from XMM-Newton, Chandra, and Suzaku. The aim is to study the variability of the neutral intrinsic X-ray obscuration along the line of sight and investigate the properties and location of the dominant component of the X-ray-obscuring gas. The observations are sensitive to absorption columns of $N_{\rm H} \sim 10^{20.5-24} {\rm cm^{-2}}$ of fully- and partially-covering neutral and/or lowly-ionized gas on timescales spanning days to well over a decade. We dete…
Weak emission-line active galactic nuclei (WLAGNs) are radio-quiet active galactic nuclei (AGNs) that have nearly featureless optical spectra. We investigate the ultraviolet to mid-infrared spectral energy distributions of 73 WLAGNs (0.4<z<3) and find that most of them are similar to normal AGNs. We also calculate the covering factor of warm dust of these 73 WLAGNs. No significant difference is indicated by a KS test between the covering factor of WLAGNs and normal AGNs in the common range of bolometric luminosity. The implication for several models of WLAGNs is discussed. The super-Eddington …
We identify 85 variable galaxies in the GOODS North and South fields using 5 epochs of HST ACS V-band (F606W) images spanning 6 months. The variables are identified through significant flux changes in the galaxy's nucleus and represent ~2% of the survey galaxies. With the aim of studying the active galaxy population in the GOODS fields, we compare the variability-selected sample with X-ray and mid-IR AGN candidates. Forty-nine percent of the variables are associated with X-ray sources identified in the 2Ms Chandra surveys. Twenty-four percent of X-ray sources likely to be AGN are optical varia…
The past decade has experienced an explosive increase of optically-discovered tidal disruption events (TDEs) with the advent of modern time-domain surveys. However, we still lack a comprehensive observational view of their infrared (IR) echoes in spite of individual detections. To this end, we have conducted a statistical study of IR variability of the 23 optical TDEs discovered between 2009 and 2018 utilizing the full public dataset of Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer. The detection of variability is performed on the difference images, yielding out 11 objects with significant (>$3σ$) varia…
While it is difficult to observe the first black hole seeds in the early Universe, we can study intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs) in local dwarf galaxies for clues about their origins. In this paper we present a sample of variability--selected AGN in dwarf galaxies using optical photometry from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) and forward--modeled mid--IR photometry of time--resolved Wide--field Infrared Survey Explorer ({\it WISE}) coadded images. We found that 44 out of 25,714 dwarf galaxies had optically variable AGN candidates, and 148 out of 79,879 dwarf galaxies had mid--IR variab…
We present our investigation into the long-term variability of the X-ray obscuration and optical-UV-X-ray continuum in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548. In 2013 and 2014, the Swift observatory monitored NGC 5548 on average every day or two, with archival observations reaching back to 2005, totalling about 670 ks of observing time. Both broadband spectral modelling and temporal rms variability analysis are applied to the Swift data. We disentangle the variability caused by absorption, due to an obscuring weakly-ionised outflow near the disk, from variability of the intrinsic continuum components (…
