The paper is dedicated to the study of strong duality for a problem of linear copositive programming.
Based on the recently introduced concept of the set of normalized immobile indices, an extended dual problem is deduced. The dual problem satisfies the strong duality relations and does not require any additional regularity assumptions such as constraint qualifications. The main difference with the previously obtained results consists in the fact that now the extended dual problem uses neither the immobile indices themselves nor the explicit information about the convex hull of these indices.
The strong duality formulations presented in the paper have similar structure and properties as that proposed in the works of M. Ramana, L. Tuncel, and H. Wolkovicz, for semidefinite programming, but are obtained using different techniques.
An uniform LP duality is an useful property of conic matrix systems. A consistent linear conic optimization problem yields uniform LP duality if for any linear cost function, for which the primal problem has finite optimal value, the corresponding Lagrange dual problem is attainable and the duality gap vanishes. In this paper, we establish new necessary and sufficient conditions guaranteing the uniform LP duality for linear problems of Copositive Programming and formulate these conditions in different equivalent forms. The main results are obtained using an approach developed in previous paper…
The paper is devoted to the regularization of linear Copositive Programming problems which consists of transforming a problem to an equivalent form, where the Slater condition is satisfied and the strong duality holds. We describe here two regularization algorithms based on the concept of immobile indices and an understanding of the important role these indices play in the feasible sets' characterization. These algorithms are compared to some regularization procedures developed for a more general case of convex problems and based on a facial reduction approach. We show that the immobile-index-…
We give a rigorous complexity analysis of the simulated annealing algorithm by Kalai and Vempala [Math of OR 31.2 (2006): 253-266] using the type of temperature update suggested by Abernethy and Hazan [arXiv 1507.02528v2, 2015]. The algorithm only assumes a membership oracle of the feasible set, and we prove that it returns a solution in polynomial time which is near-optimal with high probability. Moreover, we propose a number of modifications to improve the practical performance of this method, and present some numerical results for test problems from copositive programming.
We study decision rule approximations for generic multi-stage robust linear optimization problems. We consider linear decision rules for the case when the objective coefficients, the recourse matrices, and the right-hand sides are uncertain, and consider quadratic decision rules for the case when only the right-hand sides are uncertain. The resulting optimization problems are NP-hard but amenable to copositive programming reformulations that give rise to tight conservative approximations. We further enhance these approximations through new piecewise decision rule schemes. Finally, we prove tha…
We study the problem of finding the Lowner-John ellipsoid, i.e., an ellipsoid with minimum volume that contains a given convex set. We reformulate the problem as a generalized copositive program, and use that reformulation to derive tractable semidefinite programming approximations for instances where the set is defined by affine and quadratic inequalities. We prove that, when the underlying set is a polytope, our method never provides an ellipsoid of higher volume than the one obtained by scaling the maximum volume inscribed ellipsoid. We empirically demonstrate that our proposed method gener…
Optimization problems with discrete decisions are nonconvex and thus lack strong duality, which limits the usefulness of tools such as shadow prices and the KKT conditions. It was shown in Burer(2009) that mixed-binary quadratic programs can be written as completely positive programs, which are convex. Completely positive reformulations of discrete optimization problems therefore have strong duality if a constraint qualification is satisfied. We apply this perspective in two ways. First, we write unit commitment in power systems as a completely positive program, and use the dual copositive pro…
This paper presents a first continuous, linear, conic formulation for the Discrete Ordered Median Problem (DOMP). Starting from a binary, quadratic formulation in the original space of location and allocation variables that are common in Location Analysis (L.A.), we prove that there exists a transformation of that formulation, using the same space of variables, that allows us to cast DOMP as a continuous linear problem in the space of completely positive matrices. This is the first positive result that states equivalence between the family of continuous convex problems and some hard problems i…
We establish a geometric condition guaranteeing exact copositive relaxation for the nonconvex quadratic optimization problem under two quadratic and several linear constraints, and present sufficient conditions for global optimality in terms of generalized Karush-Kuhn-Tucker multipliers. The copositive relaxation is tighter than the usual Lagrangian relaxation. We illustrate this by providing a whole class of quadratic optimization problems that enjoys exactness of copositive relaxation while the usual Lagrangian duality gap is infinite. Finally, we also provide verifiable conditions under whi…
We consider the problem of approximately solving a standard bi-quadratic programming (StBQP), which is NP-hard. After reformulating the original problem as an equivalent copositive tensor programming, we show how to approximate the optimal solution by approximating the cone of copositive tensors via a serial polyhedral cones. The established quality of approximation shows that, a polynomial time approximation scheme (PTAS) for solving StBQP exists and can be extended to solving standard multi-quadratic programming. Some numerical examples are provided to illustrate our approach.
Adaptive robust optimization problems are usually solved approximately by restricting the adaptive decisions to simple parametric decision rules. However, the corresponding approximation error can be substantial. In this paper we show that two-stage robust and distributionally robust linear programs can often be reformulated exactly as conic programs that scale polynomially with the problem dimensions. Specifically, when the ambiguity set constitutes a 2-Wasserstein ball centered at a discrete distribution, then the distributionally robust linear program is equivalent to a copositive program (…
We study two-stage adjustable robust linear programming in which the right-hand sides are uncertain and belong to a convex, compact uncertainty set. This problem is NP-hard, and the affine policy is a popular, tractable approximation. We prove that under standard and simple conditions, the two-stage problem can be reformulated as a copositive optimization problem, which in turn leads to a class of tractable, semidefinite-based approximations that are at least as strong as the affine policy. We investigate several examples from the literature demonstrating that our tractable approximations sign…
In the last decade, copositive formulations have been proposed for a variety of combinatorial optimization problems, for example the stability number (independence number). In this paper, we generalize this approach to infinite graphs and show that the stability number of an infinite graph is the optimal solution of some infinite-dimensional copositive program. For this we develop a duality theory between the primal convex cone of copositive kernels and the dual convex cone of completely positive measures. We determine the extreme rays of the latter cone, and we illustrate this theory with the…
Copositive optimization is a special case of convex conic programming, and it consists of optimizing a linear function over the cone of all completely positive matrices under linear constraints. Copositive optimization provides powerful relaxations of NP-hard quadratic problems or combinatorial problems, but there are still many open problems regarding copositive or completely positive matrices. In this paper, we focus on one such problem; finding a completely positive (CP) factorization for a given completely positive matrix. We treat it as a nonsmooth Riemannian optimization problem, i.e., a…
We study robust convex quadratic programs where the uncertain problem parameters can contain both continuous and integer components. Under the natural boundedness assumption on the uncertainty set, we show that the generic problems are amenable to exact copositive programming reformulations of polynomial size. These convex optimization problems are NP-hard but admit a conservative semidefinite programming (SDP) approximation that can be solved efficiently. We prove that the popular approximate S-lemma method --- which is valid only in the case of continuous uncertainty --- is weaker than our a…
This paper studies the expected optimal value of a mixed 0-1 programming problem with uncertain objective coefficients following a joint distribution. We assume that the true distribution is not known exactly, but a set of independent samples can be observed. Using the Wasserstein metric, we construct an ambiguity set centered at the empirical distribution from the observed samples and containing the true distribution with a high statistical guarantee. The problem of interest is to investigate the bound on the expected optimal value over the Wasserstein ambiguity set. Under standard assumption…
The aim of this paper is to revisit some duality results in conic linear programming and to answer an open problem related to the duality gap function for Gale's example.
Classical primal-dual affine programming takes place over finite dimensional real vector spaces. This results in beautiful duality theory, connecting the optimal solu- tions of the primal maximization problem and the dual minimization problems. These results include the Existence Duality Theorem, which guarantees optimal solutions to any feasible bounded program; and the Strong Duality Theorem, which implies that optimal solutions for primal and dual programs must have the same objective value. In a common extension of classical affine programming, we see that the Strong Duality does not hold …
This paper is aimed to prove the strong duality theorem for continuous-time linear programming problems in which the coefficients are assumed to be piecewise continuous functions. The previous paper proved the strong duality theorem for the case of piecewise continuous functions in which the discontinuities are the left-continuities. In this paper, we propose the completely different type of discretized primal and dual problems that can be used to prove the strong duality theorem for the general situation of discontinuities.
Farkas' lemma is a fundamental result from linear programming providing linear certificates for infeasibility of systems of linear inequalities. In semidefinite programming, such linear certificates only exist for strongly infeasible linear matrix inequalities. We provide nonlinear algebraic certificates for all infeasible linear matrix inequalities in the spirit of real algebraic geometry: A linear matrix inequality is infeasible if and only if -1 lies in the quadratic module associated to it. We also present a new exact duality theory for semidefinite programming, motivated by the real radic…
In semidefinite programming (SDP), unlike in linear programming, Farkas' lemma may fail to prove infeasibility. Here we obtain an exact, short certificate of infeasibility in SDP by an elementary approach: we reformulate any semidefinite system of the form Ai*X = bi (i=1,...,m) (P) X >= 0 using only elementary row operations, and rotations. When (P) is infeasible, the reformulated system is trivially infeasible. When (P) is feasible, the reformulated system has strong duality with its Lagrange dual for all objective functions. As a corollary, we obtain algorithms to generate the constraints of…
Mixed integer quadratic programming (MIQP) is the problem of minimizing a convex quadratic function over mixed integer points in a rational polyhedron. This paper focuses on the augmented Lagrangian dual (ALD) for MIQP. ALD augments the usual Lagrangian dual with a weighted nonlinear penalty on the dualized constraints. We first prove that ALD will reach a zero duality gap asymptotically as the weight on the penalty goes to infinity under some mild conditions on the penalty function. We next show that a finite penalty weight is enough for a zero gap when we use any norm as the penalty function…
Fourier-Motzkin elimination is a projection algorithm for solving finite linear programs. We extend Fourier-Motzkin elimination to semi-infinite linear programs which are linear programs with finitely many variables and infinitely many constraints. Applying projection leads to new characterizations of important properties for primal-dual pairs of semi-infinite programs such as zero duality gap, feasibility, boundedness, and solvability. Extending the Fourier-Motzkin elimination procedure to semi-infinite linear programs yields a new classification of variables that is used to determine the exi…
This paper presents a linear-programming based algorithm to perform data-driven stabilizing control of linear positive systems. A set of state-input-transition observations is collected up to magnitude-bounded noise. A state feedback controller and dual linear copositive Lyapunov function are created such that the set of all data-consistent plants is contained within the set of all stabilized systems. This containment is certified through the use of the Extended Farkas Lemma and solved via Linear Programming. Sign patterns and sparsity structure for the controller may be imposed using linear c…
We propose a framework for sensitivity analysis of linear programs (LPs) in minimization form, allowing for simultaneous perturbations in the objective coefficients and right-hand sides, where the perturbations are modeled in a compact, convex uncertainty set. This framework unifies and extends multiple approaches for LP sensitivity analysis in the literature and has close ties to worst-case linear optimization and two-stage adaptive optimization. We define the minimum (best-case) and maximum (worst-case) LP optimal values, p- and p+, over the uncertainty set, and we discuss issues of finitene…
In this paper we introduce a new dual program, which is representable as a semi-definite linear programming problem, for a primal convex minimax programming model problem and show that there is no duality gap between the primal and the dual whenever the functions involved are SOS-convex polynomials. Under a suitable constraint qualification, we derive strong duality results for this class of minimax problems. Consequently, we present applications of our results to robust SOS-convex programming problems under data uncertainty and to minimax fractional programming problems with SOS-convex polyno…
In this paper, we consider the robust linear infinite programming problem $({\rm RLIP}_c) $ defined by \begin{eqnarray*} ({\rm RLIP}_c)\quad &&\inf\; \langle c,x\rangle \textrm{subject to } &&x\in X,\; \langle x^\ast,x \rangle \le r ,\;\forall (x^\ast,r)\in\mathcal{U}_t,\; \forall t\in T, \end{eqnarray*} where $X$ is a locally convex Hausdorff topological vector space, $T$ is an arbitrary (possible infinite) index set, $c\in X^*$, and $\mathcal{U}_t\subset X^*\times \mathbb{R}$, $t \in T$ are uncertainty sets. We propose an approach to duality for the robust linear problems with convex constra…
We consider semi-infinite linear programs with countably many constraints indexed by the natural numbers. When the constraint space is the vector space of all real valued sequences, we show the finite support (Haar) dual is equivalent to the algebraic Lagrangian dual of the linear program. This settles a question left open by Anderson and Nash [Linear programming in infinite dimensional spaces : theory and applications, Wiley 1987]. This result implies that if there is a duality gap between the primal linear program and its finite support dual, then this duality gap cannot be closed by conside…
Gauge duality theory was originated by Freund [Math. Programming, 38(1):47-67, 1987] and was recently further investigated by Friedlander, Mac{ê}do and Pong [SIAM J. Optm., 24(4):1999-2022, 2014]. When solving some matrix optimization problems via gauge dual, one is usually able to avoid full matrix decompositions such as singular value and/or eigenvalue decompositions. In such an approach, a gauge dual problem is solved in the first stage, and then an optimal solution to the primal problem can be recovered from the dual optimal solution obtained in the first stage. Recently, this theory has b…
A new approach to linear programming duality is proposed which relies on quadratic penalization, so that the relation between solutions to the penalized primal and dual problems becomes affine. This yields a new proof of Levin's duality theorem for capacity-constrained optimal transport as an infinite-dimensional application.
We study a pessimistic stochastic bilevel program in the context of sequential two-player games, where the leader makes a binary here-and-now decision, and the follower responds a continuous wait-and-see decision after observing the leader's action and revelation of uncertainty. Only the information of the mean, covariance, and support is known. We formulate the problem as a distributionally robust (DR) two-stage problem. The pessimistic DR bilevel program is shown to be equivalent to a generic two-stage distributionally robust stochastic (nonlinear) program with both a random objective and ra…
Geometric duality theory for multiple objective linear programming problems turned out to be very useful for the development of efficient algorithms to generate or approximate the whole set of nondominated points in the outcome space. This article extends the geometric duality theory to convex vector optimization problems.
We study the ideal generated by polynomials vanishing on a semialgebraic set and propose an algorithm to calculate the generators, which is based on some techniques of the cylindrical algebraic decomposition. By applying these, polynomial optimization problems with polynomial equality constraints can be modified equivalently so that the associated semidefinite programming relaxation problems have no duality gap. Elementary proofs for some criteria on reality of ideals are also given.
We present a novel analysis of semidefinite programs (SDPs) with positive duality gaps, i.e. different optimal values in the primal and dual problems. These SDPs are extremely pathological, often unsolvable, and also serve as models of more general pathological convex programs. However, despite their allure, they are not well understood even when they have just two variables. We first completely characterize two variable SDPs with positive gaps; in particular, we transform them into a standard form that makes the positive gap trivial to recognize. The transformation is very simple, as it mostl…
This paper proposes a general duality framework for the problem of minimizing a convex integral functional over a space of stochastic processes adapted to a given filtration. The framework unifies many well-known duality frameworks from operations research and mathematical finance. The unification allows the extension of some useful techniques from these two fields to a much wider class of problems. In particular, combining certain finite-dimensional techniques from convex analysis with measure theoretic techniques from mathematical finance, we are able to close the duality gap in some situati…
The most important ingredient for solving mixed-integer nonlinear programs (MINLPs) to global epsilon-optimality with spatial branch and bound is a tight, computationally tractable relaxation. Due to both theoretical and practical considerations, relaxations of MINLPs are usually required to be convex. Nonetheless, current optimization solver can often successfully handle a moderate presence of nonconvexities, which opens the door for the use of potentially tighter nonconvex relaxations. In this work, we exploit this fact and make use of a nonconvex relaxation obtained via aggregation of const…
We introduce and study a new dual condition which characterizes zero duality gap in nonsmooth convex optimization. We prove that our condition is weaker than all existing constraint qualifications, including the closed epigraph condition. Our dual condition was inspired by, and is weaker than, the so-called Bertsekas' condition for monotropic programming problems. We give several corollaries of our result and special cases as applications. We pay special attention to the polyhedral and sublinear cases, and their implications in convex optimization.
The facial reduction algorithm of Borwein and Wolkowicz and the extended dual of Ramana provide a strong dual for the conic linear program $$ (P) \sup {<c, x> | Ax \leq_K b} $$ in the absence of any constraint qualification. The facial reduction algorithm solves a sequence of auxiliary optimization problems to obtain such a dual. Ramana's dual is applicable when (P) is a semidefinite program (SDP) and is an explicit SDP itself. Ramana, Tuncel, and Wolkowicz showed that these approaches are closely related; in particular, they proved the correctness of Ramana's dual using certificates from a fa…
We present simple compact proofs of the strong and weak duality theorems of tropical linear programming. It follows that there is no duality gap for a pair of tropical primal-dual problems. This result together with known properties of subeigenvectors enables us to directly solve a special tropical linear program with two-sided constraints. We also study the duality gap in tropical integer linear programming. A direct solution is available for the primal problem. An algorithm of quadratic complexity is presented for the dual problem. A direct solution is available provided that all coefficient…
We study the stochastic control problem of maximizing expected utility from terminal wealth under a non-bankruptcy constraint. The wealth process is subject to shocks produced by a general marked point process. The problem of the agent is to derive the optimal insurance strategy which allows "lowering" the level of the shocks. This optimization problem is related to a suitable dual stochastic control problem in which the delicate boundary constraints disappear. We characterize the dual value function as the unique viscosity solution of the corresponding a Hamilton Jacobi Bellman Variational In…
We present a new duality theory for non-convex variational problems, under possibly mixed Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. The dual problem reads nicely as a linear programming problem, and our main result states that there is no duality gap. Further, we provide necessary and sufficient optimality conditions, and we show that our duality principle can be reformulated as a min-max result which is quite useful for numerical implementations. As an example, we illustrate the application of our method to a celebrated free boundary problem. The results were announced in \cite{BoFr}.
This note establishes a limiting formula for the conic Lagrangian dual of a convex infinite optimization problem, correcting the classical version of Karney [Math. Programming 27 (1983) 75-82] for convex semi-infinite programs. A reformulation of the convex infinite optimization problem with a single constraint leads to a limiting formula for the corresponding Lagrangian dual, called sup-dual, and also for the primal problem in the case when strong Slater condition holds, which also entails strong sup-duality.
For a primal-dual pair of conic linear problems that are described by convex cones $S\subset X$, $T\subset Y$, bilinear symmetric objective functions $\langle\cdot,\cdot\rangle_X$, $\langle\cdot,\cdot\rangle_Y$ and a linear operator $A:X\rightarrow Y$, we show that the existence of optimal solutions $x^*\in S$, $y^*\in T$ that satisfy $Ax^*=b$ and $A^Ty^*=c$ eventually comes down to the consistency and solvability of the problems $min\langle z,z\rangle_Y,\;z\in\{Ax-b:x\in S\}$ and $ min\langle w,w\rangle_X,\; w\in\{A^Ty-c:y\in T\}$. Assuming that these two problems are consistent and solvable,…
Dantzig and Eaves claimed that fundamental duality theorems of linear programming were a trivial consequence of Fourier elimination. Another property of Fourier elimination is considered here, regarding the existence of implicit equalities rather than solvability. This leads to a different interpretation of duality theory which allows us to use Gaussian elimination to decide solvability of systems of linear inequalities, for bounded systems.
