Wiltshire-Gordon has introduced a homotopy model for ordered configuration spaces on a given simplicial complex. That author asserts that, after a suitable subdivision, his model also works for unordered configuration spaces. We supply details justifying Wiltshire-Gordon's assertion and, more importantly, uncover the equivariant properties of his more-general simplicial-difference model for the complement of a subcomplex inside a larger complex. This is achieved by proving an equivariant version of the Nerve Lemma. In addition, in the case of configuration spaces, we show that a slight variation of the model has better properties: it is regular and sits inside the configuration space as a strong and equivariant deformation retract. Our variant for the configuration-space model comes from a comparison, in the equivariant setting, between Wiltshire's simplicial difference and a well known model for the complement of a full subcomplex on a simplicial complex.
In this paper we introduce a functor, called the simplicial nerve of an A-infinity category, defined on the category of (small) A-infinity categories with values in simplicial sets. We prove that the simplicial nerve of any A-infinity category is an infinity category. This construction extends functorially the nerve construction for differential graded categories proposed by J.Lurie in Higher Algebra. We prove that if a differential graded category is pretriangulated in the sense of A.I.Bondal-M.Kapranov, then its nerve is a stable infinity category in the sense of J.Lurie.
Given a simplicial group G, there are two known classifying simplicial set constructions, the Kan classifying simplicial set Wbar G and Diag N G, where N denotes the dimensionwise nerve. They are known to be weakly homotopy equivalent. We will show that Wbar G is a strong simplicial deformation retract of Diag N G. In particular, Wbar G and Diag N G are simplicially homotopy equivalent.
In this note we consider partial model categories, by which we mean relative categories that satisfy a weakened version of the model category axioms involving only the weak equivalences. More precisely, a partial model category will be a relative category that has the two out of six property and admits a 3-arrow calculus. We then show that Charles Rezk's result that the simplicial space obtained from a simplicial model category by taking a Reedy fibrant replacement of its simplicial nerve is a complete Segal space also holds for these partial model categories. We also note that conversely ever…
This paper continues the development of a simplicial theory of weak omega-categories, by studying categories which are enriched in weak complicial sets. These complicial Gray-categories generalise both the Kan complex enriched categories of homotopy theory and the Gray-categories of weak 3-category theory. We derive a simplicial nerve construction, which is closely related to Cordier and Porter's homotopy coherent nerve, and show that this faithfully represents complicial Gray-categories as weak complicial sets. The category of weak complicial sets may itself be canonically enriched to a compl…
Two of the most useful tools in topological combinatorics are the nerve lemma and discrete Morse theory. In this note we introduce a theorem that interpolates between them and allows decompositions of complexes into non-contractible pieces as long as discrete Morse theory ensures that they behave well enough. The proof is based on diagrams of spaces, but that theory is not needed for the formulation or applications of the theorem.
We relate the relative nerve $\mathrm{N}_f(\mathcal{D})$ of a diagram of simplicial sets $f \colon \mathcal{D} \to \mathsf{sSet}$ with the Grothendieck construction $\mathsf{Gr} F$ of a simplicial functor $F \colon \mathcal{D} \to \mathsf{sCat}$ in the case where $f = \mathrm{N} F$. We further show that any strict monoidal simplicial category $\mathcal{C}$ gives rise to a functor $\mathcal{C}^\bullet \colon Δ^\mathrm{op} \to \mathsf{sCat}$, and that the relative nerve of $\mathrm{N} \mathcal{C}^\bullet$ is the operadic nerve $\mathrm{N}^\otimes(\mathcal{C})$. Finally, we show that all the abov…
The most natural notion of a simplicial nerve for a (weak) bicategory was given by Duskin, who showed that a simplicial set is isomorphic to the nerve of a $(2,1)$-category (i.e. a bicategory with invertible $2$-morphisms) if and only if it is a quasicategory which has unique fillers for inner horns of dimension $3$ and greater. Using Duskin's technique, we show how his nerve applies to $(2,1)$-category functors, making it a fully faithful inclusion of $(2,1)$-categories into simplicial sets. Then we consider analogues of this extension of Duskin's result for several different two-dimensional …
We prove an extension to the simplicial Nerve Lemma which establishes isomorphism of persistent homology groups, in the case where the covering spaces are filtered. While persistent homology is now widely used in topological data analysis, the usual Nerve Lemma does not provide isomorphism of persistent homology groups. Our argument involves some homological algebra: the key point being that although the maps produced in the standard proof of the Nerve Lemma do not commute as maps of chain complexes, the maps they induce on homology do.
The Mapper algorithm does not include a check for whether the cover produced conforms to the requirements of the nerve lemma. To perform a check for obstructions to the nerve lemma, statistical considerations of multiple testing quickly arise. In this paper, we propose several statistical approaches to finding obstructions: through a persistent nerve lemma, through simulation testing, and using a parametric refinement of simulation tests. We suggest Certified Mapper -- a method built from these approaches to generate certificates of non-obstruction, or identify specific obstructions to the ner…
Any tricategory characteristically has associated various simplicial or pseudo-simplicial objects. This paper explores the relationship amongst three of them: the pseudo-simplicial bicategory so-called Grothendieck nerve of the tricategory, the simplicial bicategory termed its Segal nerve, and the simplicial set called its Street geometric nerve, and it proves the fact that the geometric realizations of all of these possible candidate 'nerves of the tricategory' are homotopy equivalent. Our results provide coherence for all reasonable extensions to tricategories of Quillen's definition of the …
We introduce, for \(\C\) a regular Cartesian Reedy category a model category whose fibrant objects are an analogue of quasicategories enriched in simplicial presheaves on \(C\). We then develop a coherent realization and nerve for this model structure and demonstrate using an enriched version of the necklaces of Dugger and Spivak that our model category is Quillen-equivalent to the category of categories enriched in simplicial presheaves on \(\C\). We then show that for any Cartesian-closed left-Bousfield localization of the category of simplicial presheaves on \(\C\), the coherent nerve and r…
We propose a categorification of the Dowker duality theorem for relations. Dowker's theorem states that the Dowker complex of a relation $R \subseteq X \times Y$ of sets $X$ and $Y$ is homotopy equivalent to the Dowker complex of the transpose relation $R^T \subseteq Y \times X$. Given a relation $R$ of small categories $\mathcal{C}$ and $\mathcal{D}$, that is, a functor of the form $R \colon \mathcal{R} \to \mathcal{C} \times \mathcal{D}$, we define the bisimplicial rectangle nerve $ER$ and the Dowker nerve $DR$. The diagonal $d(ER)$ of the bisimplicial set $ER$ maps to the simplicial set $DR…
We introduce the theory of strong homotopy types of simplicial complexes. Similarly to classical simple homotopy theory, the strong homotopy types can be described by elementary moves. An elementary move in this setting is called a strong collapse and it is a particular kind of simplicial collapse. The advantage of using strong collapses is the existence and uniqueness of cores and their relationship with the nerves of the complexes. From this theory we derive new results for studying simplicial collapsibility with a different point of view. We analyze vertex-transitive simplicial $G$-actions …
We propose sparse versions of filtered simplicial complexes used to compte persistent homology of point clouds and of networks. In particular we extend a slight variation of the Sparse Čech Complex of Cavanna, Jahanseir and Sheehy from point clouds in Cartesian space to point clouds in arbitrary metric spaces. Along the way we formulate interleaving in terms of strict $2$-categories, and we introduce the concept of Dowker dissimilarities that can be considered as a common generalization of metric spaces and networks.
In this paper a parameterized generalization of a good cover filtration is introduced called an ε-good cover, defined as a cover filtration in which the reduced homology groups of the image of the inclusions between the intersections of the cover filtration at two scales ε apart are trivial. Assuming that one has an ε-good cover filtration of a finite simplicial filtration, we prove a tight bound on the bottleneck distance between the persistence diagrams of the nerve filtration and the simplicial filtration that is linear with respect to ε and the homology dimension. This bound is the result …
Given a point cloud $P$ in Euclidean space and a positive parameter $t$ we can consider the $t$-neighborhood $P^{t}$ of $P$ consisting of points at distance less than $t$ to $P$. Homology of $P^{t}$ gives information about components, holes, voids etc. in $P^{t}$. The idea of persistent homology is that it may happen that we are interested in some of holes in the spaces $P^t$ that are not detected simultaneously in homology for a single value of $t$, but where each of these holes is detected for $t$ in a wide range. When the dimension of the ambient Euclidean space is small, persistent homolog…
We establish a Quillen equivalence between the homotopy theories of equivariant Segal operads and equivariant simplicial operads with norm maps. Together with previous work, we further conclude that the homotopy coherent nerve is a right-Quillen equivalence from the model category of equivariant simplicial operads with norm maps to the model category structure for equivariant-$\infty$-operads in equivariant dendroidal sets.
The Barratt nerve, denoted $B$, is the endofunctor that takes a simplicial set to the nerve of the poset of its non-degenerate simplices. The ordered simplicial complex $BSd\, X$, namely the Barratt nerve of the Kan subdivision $Sd\, X$, is a triangulation of the original simplicial set $X$ in the sense that there is a natural map $BSd\, X\to X$ whose geometric realization is homotopic to some homeomorphism. This is a refinement to the result that any simplicial set can be triangulated. A simplicial set is said to be regular if each of its non-degenerate simplices is embedded along its $n$-th …
We construct a generalization of the operadic nerve, providing a translation between the equivariant simplicially enriched operadic world to the parametrized $\infty$-categorical perspective. This naturally factors through genuine equivariant operads, a model for "equivariant operads with norms up to homotopy". We introduce the notion of an op-fibration of genuine equivariant operads, extending Grothendieck op-fibrations, and characterize fibrant operads as the image of genuine equivariant symmetric monoidal categories. Moreover, we show that under the operadic nerve, this image is sent to $G$…
We study the Yoneda lemma for arbitrary simplicial spaces. We do that by introducing left fibrations of simplicial spaces and and studying its associated model structure, the covariant model structure. In particular, we prove a recognition principle for covariant equivalences over an arbitrary simplicial space and invariance of the covariant model structure with respect to complete Segal space equivalences.
This paper explores the relationship amongst the various simplicial and pseudo-simplicial objects characteristically associated to any bicategory C. It proves the fact that the geometric realizations of all of these possible candidate `nerves of C' are homotopy equivalent. Any one of these realizations could therefore be taken as the classifying space BC of the bicategory. Its other major result proves a direct extension of Thomason's `Homotopy Colimit Theorem' to bicategories: When the homotopy colimit construction is carried out on a diagram of spaces obtained by applying the classifying spa…
The homotopy coherent nerve from simplicial categories to simplicial sets and its left adjoint C are important to the study of (infinity,1)-categories because they provide a means for comparing two models of their respective homotopy theories, giving a Quillen equivalence between the model structures for quasi-categories and simplicial categories. The functor C also gives a cofibrant replacement for ordinary categories, regarded as trivial simplicial categories. However, the hom-spaces of the simplicial category CX arising from a quasi-category X are not well understood. We show that when X is…
We functorially associate to each relative $\infty$-category $(R,W)$ a simplicial space $N^R_\infty(R,W)$, called its Rezk nerve (a straightforward generalization of Rezk's "classification diagram" construction for relative categories). We prove the following local and global universal properties of this construction: (i) that the complete Segal space generated by the Rezk nerve $N^R_\infty(R,W)$ is precisely the one corresponding to the localization $R[[W^{-1}]]$; and (ii) that the Rezk nerve functor defines an equivalence $RelCat_\infty [[ W_{BK}^{-1} ]] \xrightarrow{\sim} Cat_\infty$ from a…
It is shown that the Mayer-Vietoris sequence holds for the cohomology of complexes of Lie algebroids which are defined on simplicial complexes and satisfy the compatibility condition concerning restrictions to the faces of each simplex. The Mayer-Vietoris sequence will be obtained as a consequence of the extension lemma for piecewise smooth forms defined on complexes of Lie algebroids.
For any topological bicategory B, the Duskin nerve NB of B is a simplicial space. We introduce the classifying topos BB of B as the Deligne topos of sheaves Sh(NB) on the simplicial space NB. It is shown that the category of geometric morphisms Hom(Sh(X),BB) from the topos of sheaves Sh(X) on a topological space X to the Deligne classifying topos is naturally equivalent to the category of principal B-bundles. As a simple consequence, the geometric realization |NB| of the nerve NB of a locally contractible topological bicategory B is the classifying space of principal B-bundles, giving a varian…
In the paper we treat Gale diagrams in a combinatorial way. The interpretation allows to describe simplicial complexes which are Alexander dual to boundaries of simplicial polytopes and, more generally, to nerve-complexes of general polytopes. This technique and recent results of N.Yu.Erokhovets are combined to prove the following: Buchstaber invariant $s(P)$ of a convex polytope equals 1 if and only if $P$ is a pyramid. In general, we describe a procedure to construct polytopes with $s_R(P)>k$. The construction has purely combinatorial consequences. We also apply Gale duality to the study of …
We provide new vanishing and glueing results for relative simplicial volume, following up on two current themes in bounded cohomology: The passage from amenable groups to boundedly acyclic groups and the use of equivariant topology. More precisely, we consider equivariant nerve pairs and relative classifying spaces for families of subgroups. Typically, we apply this to uniformly boundedly acyclic families of subgroups. Our methods also lead to vanishing results for $\ell^2$-Betti numbers of aspherical CW-pairs with small relative amenable category and to a relative version of a result by Drani…
For a simplicial complex K on m vertices and simplicial complexes K1,...,Km a composed simplicial complex K(K1,...,Km) is introduced. This construction generalizes an iterated simplicial wedge construction studied by A. Bahri, M. Bendersky, F. R. Cohen and S. Gitler and allows to describe the combinatorics of generalized joins of polytopes P(P1,...,Pm) defined by G. Agnarsson. The composition defines a structure of an operad on a set of finite simplicial complexes. We prove the following: (1) a composed complex K(K1,...,Km) is a simplicial sphere iff K is a simplicial sphere and Ki are the bou…
The purpose of this paper is to study the derived category of simplicial multicategories with arbitrary sets of objects (also known as, colored operads in simplicial sets). Our main result is a derived Morita theory for operads-where we describe the derived mapping spaces between two multicategories P and Q in terms of the nerve of a certain category of P-Q-bimodules. As an application, we show that the derived category possesses internal Hom-objects.
We show that the nerve complex of n arcs in the circle is homotopy equivalent to either a point, an odd-dimensional sphere, or a wedge sum of spheres of the same even dimension. Moreover this homotopy type can be computed in time O(n log n). For the particular case of the nerve complex of evenly-spaced arcs of the same length, we determine the dihedral group action on homology, and we relate the complex to a cyclic polytope with n vertices. We give three applications of our knowledge of the homotopy types of nerve complexes of circular arcs. First, we use the connection to cyclic polytopes to …
In this paper we consider several generalizations of the Borsuk-Ulam theorem for G-spaces and apply these results to Tucker type lemmas for G-simplicial complexes and PL-manifolds.
A good cover in R^d is a collection of open contractible sets in R^d such that the intersection of any subcollection is either contractible or empty. Motivated by an analogy with convex sets, intersection patterns of good covers were studied intensively. Our main result is that intersection patterns of good covers are algorithmically unrecognizable. More precisely, the intersection pattern of a good cover can be stored in a simplicial complex called nerve which records which subfamilies of the good cover intersect. A simplicial complex is topologically d-representable if it is isomorphic to th…
We introduce a new simplicial nerve of higher dimensional automata whose homology groups yield a new definition of the globular homology. With this new definition, the drawbacks noticed with the construction of math.CT/9902151 disappear. Moreover the important morphisms which associate to every globe its corresponding branching area and merging area of execution paths become morphisms of simplicial sets.
It is shown that if T is a connected nontrivial graph and X is an arbitrary finite simplicial complex, then there is a graph G such that the complex Hom(T,G) is homotopy equivalent to X. The proof is constructive, and uses a nerve lemma. Along the way several results regarding Hom complexes, exponentials, and subdivision are established that may be of independent interest.
Crossed complexes are shown to have an algebra sufficiently rich to model the geometric inductive definition of simplices, and so to give a purely algebraic proof of the Homotopy Addition Lemma (HAL) for the boundary of a simplex. This leads to the {\it fundamental crossed complex} of a simplicial set. The main result is a normalisation theorem for this fundamental crossed complex, analogous to the usual theorem for simplicial abelian groups, but more complicated to set up and prove, because of the complications of the HAL and of the notion of homotopies for crossed complexes. We start with so…
For a finite group $G$, we define an equivariant cobordism category $\mathcal{C}_d^G$. Objects of the category are $(d-1)$-dimensional closed smooth $G$-manifolds and morphisms are smooth $d$-dimensional equivariant cobordisms. We identify the homotopy type of its classifying space (i.e. geometric realization of its simplicial nerve) as the fixed points of the infinite loop space of an equivariant spectrum.
The category of dendroidal sets is an extension of that of simplicial sets, suitable for defining nerves of operads rather than just of categories. In this paper, we prove some basic properties of inner Kan complexes in the category of dendroidal sets. In particular, we extend fundamental results of Boardman and Vogt, of Cordier and Porter, and of Joyal to dendroidal sets.
We prove the following generalization of a classical result of Adams: for any pointed and connected topological space $(X,b)$, that is not necessarily simply connected, the cobar construction of the differential graded (dg) coalgebra of normalized singular chains in $X$ with vertices at $b$ is weakly equivalent as a differential graded associative algebra (dga) to the singular chains on the Moore based loop space of $X$ at $b$. We deduce this statement from several more general categorical results of independent interest. We construct a functor $\mathfrak{C}_{\square_c}$ from simplicial sets t…
We use the terms $\infty$-categories and $\infty$-functors to mean the objects and morphisms in an $\infty$-cosmos: a simplicially enriched category satisfying a few axioms, reminiscent of an enriched category of fibrant objects. Quasi-categories, Segal categories, complete Segal spaces, marked simplicial sets, iterated complete Segal spaces, $θ_n$-spaces, and fibered versions of each of these are all $\infty$-categories in this sense. Previous work in this series shows that the basic category theory of $\infty$-categories and $\infty$-functors can be developed only in reference to the axioms …
