In this paper, we study the maximum degree in non-empty induced subgraphs of the Kneser graph $KG(n,k)$. One of the main results asserts that, for $k>k_0$ and $n>64k^2$, whenever a non-empty subgraph has $m\ge k{n-2\choose k-2}$ vertices, its maximum degree is at least $\frac 12(1-\frac {k^2}n) m - {n-2\choose k-2}\ge 0.49 m$. This bound is essentially best possible. One of the intermediate steps is to obtain structural results on non-empty subgraphs with small maximum degree.
A Kneser graph $KG_{n,k}$ is a graph whose vertices are in one-to-one correspondence with $k$-element subsets of $[n],$ with two vertices connected if and only if the corresponding sets do not intersect. A famous result due to Lovász states that the chromatic number of a Kneser graph $KG_{n,k}$ is equal to $n-2k+2$. In this paper we study the chromatic number of a random subgraph of a Kneser graph $KG_{n,k}$ as $n$ grows. A random subgraph $KG_{n,k}(p)$ is obtained by including each edge of $KG_{n,k}$ with probability $p$. For a wide range of parameters $k = k(n), p = p(n)$ we show that $χ(KG_…
Investigating the equality of the chromatic number and the circular chromatic number of graphs has been an active stream of research for last decades. In this regard, Habolhassan and Zhu [Circular chromatic number of Kneser graphs, Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series B, 2003] proved that if $n$ is sufficiently large with respect to $k$, then the Schrijver graph ${\rm SG}(n,k)$ has the same chromatic and circular chromatic number. Later, Meunier [A topological lower bound for the circular chromatic number of Schrijver graphs, Journal of Graph Theory, 2005] and independently, Simonyi and Tard…
Combining Ky Fan's theorem with ideas of Greene and Matousek we prove a generalization of Dol'nikov's theorem. Using another variant of the Borsuk-Ulam theorem due to Bacon and Tucker, we also prove the presence of all possible completely multicolored t-vertex complete bipartite graphs in t-colored t-chromatic Kneser graphs and in several of their relatives. In particular, this implies a generalization of a recent result of G. Spencer and F. E. Su.
Schrijver identified a family of vertex critical subgraphs of the Kneser graphs called the stable Kneser graphs $SG_{n,k}$. Björner and de Longueville proved that the neighborhood complex of the stable Kneser graph $SG_{n,k}$ is homotopy equivalent to a $k-$sphere. In this article, we prove that the homotopy type of the neighborhood complex of the Kneser graph $KG_{2,k}$ is a wedge of $(k+4)(k+1)+1$ spheres of dimension $k$. We construct a maximal subgraph $S_{2,k}$ of $KG_{2,k}$, whose neighborhood complex is homotopy equivalent to the neighborhood complex of $SG_{2,k}$. Further, we prove tha…
The Kneser graph ${\rm KG}_{n,k}$ is a graph whose vertex set is the family of all $k$-subsets of $[n]$ and two vertices are adjacent if their corresponding subsets are disjoint. The classical Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem determines the cardinality and structure of a maximum induced $K_2$-free subgraph in ${\rm KG}_{n,k}$. As a generalization of the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem, Erdős proposed a conjecture about the maximum order of an induced $K_{s+1}$-free subgraph of ${\rm KG}_{n,k}$. As the best known result concerning this conjecture, Frankl [Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 2013], when $n\ge…
For $q>27$ we determine the independence number $α(Γ)$ of the Kneser graph $Γ$ on plane-solid flags in $PG(6,q)$. More precisely we describe all maximal independent sets of size at least $q^{11}$ and show that every other maximal example has cardinality at most a constant times $q^{10}$.
Lionel Levine's hat challenge has $t$ players, each with a (very large, or infinite) stack of hats on their head, each hat independently colored at random black or white. The players are allowed to coordinate before the random colors are chosen, but not after. Each player sees all hats except for those on her own head. They then proceed to simultaneously try and each pick a black hat from their respective stacks. They are proclaimed successful only if they are all correct. Levine's conjecture was the success probability tends to zero when the number of players grows. We prove that this success…
Let $n,k,r$ be positive integers with $n \geq rk$ and $r \geq 2$. Consider a circle $C$ with~$n$ points~$1,\ldots,n$ in clockwise order. The $r$-stable \emph{interlacing graph} $\text{IG}_{n,k}^{(r)}$ is the graph with vertices corresponding to $k$-subsets $S$ of $\{1,...,n\}$ such that any two distinct points in~$S$ have distance at least~$r$ around the circle, and edges between~$k$-subsets $P$ and $Q$ if they \emph{interlace}: after removing the points in~$P$ from $C$, the points in~$Q$ are in different connected components. In this paper we prove that the circular chromatic number of $\text…
In this article, we prove that the neighborhood complex of the Kneser graph $KG_{3,k}$ is of the same homotopy type as that of a wedge of $\frac{(k+1)(k+3)(k+4)(k+6)}{4}+1$ spheres of dimension $k$. We construct a maximal subgraph $S_{3,k}$ of $KG_{3,k}$, whose neighborhood complex deformation retracts onto the neighborhood complex of $SG_{3,k}$.
Schrijver graphs are vertex-color-critical subgraphs of Kneser graphs having the same chromatic number. They also share the value of their fractional chromatic number but Schrijver graphs are not critical for that. Here we present an induced subgraph of every Schrijver graph that is vertex-critical with respect to the fractional chromatic number. These subgraphs turn out to be isomorphic with certain circular complete graphs. We also characterize the critical edges within this subgraph.
Recently, Kupavskii~[{\it On random subgraphs of {K}neser and {S}chrijver graphs. J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, {\rm 2016}.}] investigated the chromatic number of random Kneser graphs $\KG_{n,k}(ρ)$ and proved that, in many cases, the chromatic numbers of the random Kneser graph $\KG_{n,k}(ρ)$ and the Kneser graph $\KG_{n,k}$ are almost surely closed. He also marked the studying of the chromatic number of random Kneser hypergraphs $\KG^r_{n,k}(ρ)$ as a very interesting problem. With the help of $\Z_p$-Tucker lemma, a combinatorial generalization of the Borsuk-Ulam theorem, we generalize Kupavskii'…
In 2011, Meunier conjectured that for positive integers $n,k,r,s$ with $ k\geq 2$, $r\geq 2$, and $n\geq \max (\{r,s\})k$, the chromatic number of $s$ -stable $r$-uniform Kneser hypergraphs is equal to $\left\lceil \frac{n-\max (\{r,s\})(k-1)}{r-1}\right\rceil $. It is a strengthened version of the conjecture proposed by Ziegler (2002), and Alon, Drewnowski and Łuczak (2009). The problem about the chromatic number of almost $s$-stable $r$ -uniform Kneser hypergraphs has also been introduced by Meunier (2011). For the $r=2$ case of the Meunier conjecture, Jonsson (2012) provided a purely combin…
Every graph $G=(V,E)$ is an induced subgraph of some Kneser graph of rank $k$, i.e., there is an assignment of (distinct) $k$-sets $v \mapsto A_v$ to the vertices $v\in V$ such that $A_u$ and $A_v$ are disjoint if and only if $uv\in E$. The smallest such $k$ is called the Kneser rank of $G$ and denoted by $f_{\rm Kneser}(G)$. As an application of a result of Frieze and Reed concerning the clique cover number of random graphs we show that for constant $0< p< 1$ there exist constants $c_i=c_i(p)>0$, $i=1,2$ such that with high probability \[ c_1 n/(\log n)< f_{\rm Kneser}(G) < c_2 n/(\log n). \]…
A transitive graph is 2-dimensional if it can be represented as the intersection of two linear orders. Such representations make answering of reachability queries trivial, and allow many problems that are NP-hard on arbitrary graphs to be solved in polynomial time. One may therefore be interested in finding 2-dimensional graphs that closely approximate a given graph of arbitrary order dimension. In this paper we show that the maximal 2-dimensional subgraphs of a transitive graph G are induced by the optimal near-transitive orientations of the complement of G. The same characterization holds fo…
For $k\geq 1$ and $n\geq 2k$, the Kneser graph $KG(n,k)$ has all $k$-element subsets of an $n$-element set as vertices; two such subsets are adjacent if they are disjoint. It was first proved by Lovász that the chromatic number of $KG(n,k)$ is $n-2k+2$. Schrijver constructed a vertex-critical subgraph $SG(n,k)$ of $KG(n,k)$ with the same chromatic number. For the stronger notion of criticality defined in terms of removing edges, however, no analogous construction is known except in trivial cases. We provide such a construction for $k=2$ and arbitrary $n\geq 4$ by means of a nice explicit combi…
In 2002, A. Björner and M. de Longueville showed the neighborhood complex of the $2$-stable Kneser graph ${KG(n, k)}_{2-\textit{stab}}$ has the same homotopy type as the $(n-2k)$-sphere. A short time ago, an analogous result about the homotopy type of the neighborhood complex of almost $s$-stable Kneser graph has been announced by J. Osztényi. Combining this result with the famous Lovász's topological lower bound on the chromatic number of graphs has been yielded a new way for determining the chromatic number of these graphs which was determined a bit earlier by P. Chen. In this paper we prese…
Let $Γ$ be the graph whose vertices are the chambers of the finite projective space $PG(3,q)$ with two vertices being adjacent when the corresponding chambers are in general position. It is known that the independence number of this graph is $(q^2+q+1)(q+1)^2$. For $q\ge 43$ we determine the largest independent set of $Γ$ and show that every maximal independent set that is not a largest one has at most constant times $q^3$ elements. For $q\ge 47$, this information is then used to show that $Γ$ has chromatic number $q^2+q$. Furthermore, for many families of generalized quadrangles we prove simi…
In 1991, Bollobás and Frieze showed that the threshold for $G_{n,p}$ to contain a spanning maximal planar subgraph is very close to $p = n^{-1/3}$. In this paper, we compute similar threshold ranges for $G_{n,p}$ to contain a maximal bipartite planar subgraph and for $G_{n,p}$ to contain a maximal planar subgraph of fixed girth $g$.
An orientation of a graph is semi-transitive if it is acyclic, and for any directed path $v_0\rightarrow v_1\rightarrow \cdots\rightarrow v_k$ either there is no edge between $v_0$ and $v_k$, or $v_i\rightarrow v_j$ is an edge for all $0\leq i<j\leq k$. An undirected graph is semi-transitive if it admits a semi-transitive orientation. Semi-transitive graphs include several important classes of graphs such as 3-colorable graphs, comparability graphs, and circle graphs, and they are precisely the class of word-representable graphs studied extensively in the literature. In this paper, we study se…
A Kneser representation KG(H) for a graph G is a bijective assignment of hyperedges of a hypergraph H to the vertices of G such that two vertices of G are adjacent if and only if the corresponding hyperedges are disjoint. In this paper, we introduce a colored version of the Turan number and use that to determine the chromatic number of some families of graphs in terms of the generalized Turan number of graphs. In particular, we determine the chromatic number of every Kneser multigraph KG(H), where the vertex set of H is the edge set of a multigraph G such that the multiplicity of each edge is …
In this paper, we study a certain case of a subgraph isomorphism problem. We consider the Hasse diagram of the lattice $M_{k}$ (the unique lattice with $k+2$ elements and one anti-chain of length $k$) and want to find the maximal $k$ for which it is isomorphic to a subgraph of the reduction graph of a given one-rule string rewriting system. We obtain a complete characterization for this problem and show that there is a dichotomy. There are one-rule string rewriting systems for which the maximal such $k$ is $2$ and there are cases where there is no maximum. No other intermediate option is possi…
Consider classical Kneser's graph $K(n,r)$: for two natural numbers $ r, n $ such that $r \le n / 2$, its vertices are all the subsets of $[n]=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ of size $r$, and two such vertices are adjacent if the corresponding subsets are disjoint. The Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem states that the size of the largest independent set in this graph is $\binom{n-1}{r-1}$. Now let us delete each edge of the graph $K(n,r)$ with some fixed probability $p$ independently of each other. Quite surprisingly, the independence number of such random subgraph $K_p(n,r)$ of the graph $ K(n,r) $ is, with high pro…
The orthogonality dimension of a graph $G=(V,E)$ over a field $\mathbb{F}$ is the smallest integer $t$ for which there exists an assignment of a vector $u_v \in \mathbb{F}^t$ with $\langle u_v,u_v \rangle \neq 0$ to every vertex $v \in V$, such that $\langle u_v, u_{v'} \rangle = 0$ whenever $v$ and $v'$ are adjacent vertices in $G$. The study of the orthogonality dimension of graphs is motivated by various applications in information theory and in theoretical computer science. The contribution of the present work is two-fold. First, we prove that there exists a constant $c$ such that for ever…
Motivated by the concept of well-covered graphs, we define a graph to be well-bicovered if every vertex-maximal bipartite subgraph has the same order (which we call the bipartite number). We first give examples of them, compare them with well-covered graphs, and characterize those with small or large bipartite number. We then consider graph operations including the union, join, and lexicographic and cartesian products. Thereafter we consider simplicial vertices and 3-colored graphs where every vertex is in triangle, and conclude by characterizing the maximal outerplanar graphs that are well-bi…
A graph G is well-covered if all its maximal independent sets are of the same cardinality. Assume that a weight function w is defined on its vertices. Then G is w-well-covered if all maximal independent sets are of the same weight. For every graph G, the set of weight functions w such that G is w-well-covered is a vector space, denoted WCW(G). Let B be a complete bipartite induced subgraph of G on vertex sets of bipartition B_X and B_Y. Then B is generating if there exists an independent set S such that S \cup B_X and S \cup B_Y are both maximal independent sets of G. A relating edge is a gene…

The purpose of this paper is to show that all maximally planar subgraphs of graphs in the Petersen Family have associated conflict graphs unbalanced. All but three strong conflict graphs arising from Petersen Family Graphs are unbalanced, and the three that are balanced all come from $K_{4,4}-e$.
A graph is $1$-planar if it has a drawing in the plane such that each edge is crossed at most once by another edge. Moreover, if this drawing has the additional property that for each crossing of two edges the end vertices of these edges induce a complete subgraph, then the graph is locally maximal $1$-planar. For a $3$-connected locally maximal $1$-planar graph $G$, we show the existence of a spanning $3$-connected planar subgraph and prove that $G$ is hamiltonian if $G$ has at most three $3$-vertex-cuts, and that $G$ is traceable if $G$ has at most four $3$-vertex-cuts. Moreover, infinitely …
A graph $G$ is well-covered if all its maximal independent sets are of the same cardinality. Assume that a weight function $w$ is defined on its vertices. Then $G$ is $w$-well-covered if all maximal independent sets are of the same weight. For every graph $G$, the set of weight functions $w$ such that $G$ is $w$-well-covered is a vector space, denoted as $WCW(G).$ Deciding whether an input graph $G$ is well-covered is co-NP-complete. Therefore, finding $WCW(G)$ is co-NP-hard. A generating subgraph of a graph $G$ is an induced complete bipartite subgraph $B$ of $G$ on vertex sets of bipartition…

Induced bipartite subgraphs of maximal vertex cardinality are an essential concept for the analysis of graphs. Yet, discovering them in large graphs is known to be computationally hard. Therefore, we consider in this work a weaker notion of this problem, where we discard the maximality constraint in favor of inclusion maximality. Thus, we aim to discover locally maximal bipartite subgraphs. For this, we present three heuristic approaches to extract such subgraphs and compare their results to the solutions of the global problem. For the latter, we employ the algorithmic strength of fast SAT-sol…
A chordal graph is a graph with no induced cycles of length at least $4$. Let $f(n,m)$ be the maximal integer such that every graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges has a chordal subgraph with at least $f(n,m)$ edges. In 1985 Erdős and Laskar posed the problem of estimating $f(n,m)$. In the late '80s, Erdős, Gyárfás, Ordman and Zalcstein determined the value of $f(n,n^2/4+1)$ and made a conjecture on the value of $f(n,n^2/3+1)$. In this paper we prove this conjecture and answer the question of Erdős and Laskar, determining $f(n,m)$ asymptotically for all $m$ and exactly for $m \leq n^2/3+1$.
We give an elementary proof for the non-$3$-colorability of $4$-chromatic Schrijver graphs thus providing such a proof also for $4$-chromatic Kneser graphs. To this end we use a complete description of the structure of $4$-chromatic Schrijver graphs that was already given by Braun and even earlier in an unpublished manuscript by Li. We also address connections to surface quadrangulations. In particular, we show that a spanning subgraph of $4$-chromatic Schrijver graphs quadrangulates the Klein bottle, while another spanning subgraph quadrangulates the projective plane. The latter is a special …
We prove that if $M$ is a maximal $k$-edge-colorable subgraph of a multigraph $G$ and if $F = \{v \in V(G) : d_M(v) \leq k-μ(v)\}$, then $d_F(v) \leq d_M(v)$ for all $v \in F$. (When $G$ is a simple graph, the set $F$ is just the set of vertices having degree less than $k$ in $M$.) This implies Vizing's Theorem as well as a special case of Tuza's Conjecture on packing and covering of triangles. A more detailed version of our result also implies Vizing's Adjacency Lemma for simple graphs.
For a countable ultrahomogeneous graph G let P(G) denote the collection of domains of subgraphs of G isomorphic to G. The order types of maximal chains in the set P(G) U ø ordered by the inclusion are characterized as: (I) the order types of compact sets of reals having the minimum non-isolated, if G is the Rado graph or the Henson graph H_n, for some n>2; (II) the order types of compact nowhere dense sets of reals having the minimum non-isolated, if G is the union of μdisjoint complete graphs of size ν, where μν=ω.
Let $B$ be an induced complete bipartite subgraph of $G$ on vertex sets of bipartition $B_{X}$ and $B_{Y}$. The subgraph $B$ is {\it generating} if there exists an independent set $S$ such that each of $S \cup B_{X}$ and $S \cup B_{Y}$ is a maximal independent set in the graph. If $B$ is generating, it \textit{produces} the restriction $w(B_{X})=w(B_{Y})$. Let $w:V(G) \longrightarrow\mathbb{R}$ be a weight function. We say that $G$ is $w$-well-covered if all maximal independent sets are of the same weight. The graph $G$ is $w$-well-covered if and only if $w$ satisfies all restrictions produced…
Cut vertices are often used as a measure of nodes' importance within a network. They are those nodes whose failure disconnects a graph. Let N(G) be the number of connected induced subgraphs of a graph $G$. In this work, we investigate the maximum of N(G) where $G$ is a unicyclic graph with $n$ nodes of which $c$ are cut vertices. For all valid $n,c$, we give a full description of those maximal (that maximise N(.)) unicyclic graphs. It is found that there are generally two maximal unicyclic graphs. For infinitely many values of $n,c$, however, there is a unique maximal unicyclic graph with $n$ …
Let $Γ$ be a distance-regular graph with diameter $d$ and Kneser graph $K=Γ_d$, the distance-$d$ graph of $Γ$. We say that $Γ$ is partially antipodal when $K$ has fewer distinct eigenvalues than $Γ$. In particular, this is the case of antipodal distance-regular graphs ($K$ with only two distinct eigenvalues), and the so-called half-antipodal distance-regular graphs ($K$ with only one negative eigenvalue). We provide a characterization of partially antipodal distance-regular graphs (among regular graphs with $d$ distinct eigenvalues) in terms of the spectrum and the mean number of vertices at m…
A tree-coloring of a maximal planar graph is a proper vertex $4$-coloring such that every bichromatic subgraph, induced by this coloring, is a tree. A maximal planar graph $G$ is tree-colorable if $G$ has a tree-coloring. In this article, we prove that a tree-colorable maximal planar graph $G$ with $δ(G)\geq 4$ contains at least four odd-vertices. Moreover, for a tree-colorable maximal planar graph of minimum degree 4 that contains exactly four odd-vertices, we show that the subgraph induced by its four odd-vertices is not a claw and contains no triangles.
Let the Kneser graph $K$ of a distance-regular graph $Γ$ be the graph on the same vertex set as $Γ$, where two vertices are adjacent when they have maximal distance in $Γ$. We study the situation where the Bose-Mesner algebra of $Γ$ is not generated by the adjacency matrix of $K$. In particular, we obtain strong results in the so-called `half antipodal' case.
A graph G is well-covered if all its maximal independent sets are of the same cardinality. Assume that a weight function w is defined on its vertices. Then G is w-well-covered if all maximal independent sets are of the same weight. For every graph G, the set of weight functions w such that G is w-well-covered is a vector space. Given an input graph G without cycles of length 4, 5, and 6, we characterize polynomially the vector space of weight functions w for which G is w-well-covered. Let B be an induced complete bipartite subgraph of G on vertex sets of bipartition B_{X} and B_{Y}. Assume tha…
A biclique of a graph $G$ is an induced complete bipartite subgraph of $G$ such that neither part is empty. A star is a biclique of $G$ such that one part has exactly one vertex. The star graph of $G$ is the intersection graph of the maximal stars of $G$. A graph $H$ is star-critical if its star graph is different from the star graph of any of its proper induced subgraphs. We begin by presenting a bound on the size of star-critical pre-images by a quadratic function on the number of vertices of the star graph, then proceed to describe a Krausz-type characterization for this graph class; we com…
Tutte showed that a graph $G$ is planar if and only if the conflict graph associated to every cycle of $G$ is bipartite. We define a (not necessarily unique) signed conflict graph associated to a maximally planar subgraph of a nonplanar graph such that if $G$ has a flat embedding, every possible conflict graph associated to every maximally planar subgraph of $G$ is balanced. In doing this, we show that for every graph $G$ with flat embedding, and a planar subgraph $P$ of $G$, $P$ lies on a sphere that intersects $G$ only in $P$. We conjecture that $G$ is intrinsically linked if and only if eve…
