The ionospheric critical frequency (foF2) from ionosonde measurements at geographic high, middle, and low latitudes is analyzed with the occurrence of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) in long term variability of the solar cycles. We observed trends of monthly maximum foF2 values and monthly averaged values of CME parameters such as speed, angular width, mass, and kinetic energy with respect to time. The impact of CMEs on foF2 is very high at high latitudes and low at low latitudes. The time series for monthly maximum foF2 and monthly-averaged CME speed is moderately correlated at high and middle latitudes.

Impacting the dayside Martian ionosphere from above and below: Effects of the impact of CIRs and ICMEs close to aphelion (April 2021) and during dust storms (June-July 2022) seen with MAVEN ROSE
Solar cycle 24 is one of the weakest solar cycles recorded, but surprisingly the declining phase of it had a slow CME which evolved without any low coronal signature and is classified as a stealth CME which was responsible for an intense geomagnetic storm at Earth (Dst = -176 nT). The impact of this space weather event on the terrestrial ionosphere has been reported. However, the propagation of this CME beyond 1 au and the impact of this CME on other planetary environments have not been studied so far. In this paper, we analyse the data from Sun-Earth L1 point as well as from the Martian orbit …
We investigate the Sun-Earth dynamics of a set of 38 well-observed Coronal Mass Ejections(CMEs) using data from the STEREO, SOHO missions and WIND instrument. We seek to quantify the relative contributions of Lorentz force and aerodynamic drag on their propagation. The CMEs are 3D reconstructed using the Graduated Cylindrical Shell(GCS) model to derive observed CME parameters.Using a microphysical prescription of the drag coefficient,we find that solar wind aerodynamic drag adequately accounts for the dynamics of the fastest CMEs from as low as 3.5 Rs. For relatively slower CMEs, however, we f…
Ionospheric conductance is a crucial factor in regulating the closure of magnetospheric field-aligned currents through the ionosphere as Hall and Pedersen currents. Despite its importance in predictive investigations of the magnetosphere - ionosphere coupling, the estimation of ionospheric conductance in the auroral region is precarious in most global first-principles based models. This impreciseness in estimating the auroral conductance impedes both our understanding and predictive capabilities of the magnetosphere-ionosphere system during extreme space weather events. In this article, we add…
We investigate the role of secondary electron and ion emission from impact of gas molecules on the Cassini Langmuir Probe (RPWS-LP, or LP) measurements in the ionosphere of Saturn. We add a model of the emission currents, based on laboratory measurements and data from comet 1P/Halley, to the equations used to derive plasma parameters from LP bias voltage sweeps. Reanalysing several hundred sweeps from the Cassini Grand Finale orbits, we find reasonable explanations for three open conundrums from previous LP studies of the Saturn ionosphere. We find an explanation for the observed positive char…
A sample of isolated Earth-impacting ICMEs that occurred in the period January 2008 to August 2014 is analysed in order to study in detail the ICME in situ signatures with respect to the type of filament eruption related to the corresponding CME. For Earth-directed CMEs, a kinematical study was performed using the STEREO-A, B COR1 and COR2 coronagraphs and the Heliospheric Imagers HI1. Based on the extrapolated CME kinematics, we identified interacting CMEs, which were excluded from further analysis. Applying this approach, a set of 31 isolated Earth-impacting CMEs was unambiguously identified…
Many stars of different spectral types with planets in the habitable zone are known to emit flares. Until now, studies that address the long-term impact of stellar flares and associated Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) assumed that the planet's interior remains unaffected by interplanetary CMEs, only considering the effect of plasma/UV interactions on the atmosphere of planets. Here, we show that the magnetic flux carried by flare-associated CMEs results in planetary interior heating by Ohmic dissipation and leads to a variety of interior--exterior interactions. We construct a physical model to s…
It is generally accepted that extreme space weather events tend to be related to strong flares and fast halo coronal mass ejections CMEs. In the present paper, we carefully identify the chain of events from the Sun to the Earth induced by all 12 X-class flares that occurred in 2002. In this small sample, we find an unusual high rate (58\%) of solar sources with a longitude larger than 74 degrees. Yet, all 12 X-class flares are associated with at least one CME. The fast halo CMEs (50\% ) are related to interplanetary CMEs (ICMEs) at L1 and weak Dst minimum values ($> -51\;$nT); while 5 (41\%) o…
Our knowledge of the properties of Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) in the inner heliosphere is constrained by the relative lack of plasma observations between Sun and 1 AU. In this work, we present a comprehensive catalog of 47 CMEs measured in situ measurements by two or more radially aligned spacecraft (MESSENGER, Venus Express, STEREO or Wind/ACE). We estimate the CME impact speeds at Mercury and Venus using a drag-based model and present an average propagation profile of CMEs (speed and deceleration/acceleration) in the inner heliosphere. We find that CME deceleration continues past Mercury'…
Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are the largest type of eruptions on the Sun and the main driver of severe space weather at the Earth. In this study, we implement a force-free spheromak CME description within 3-D magnetohydrodynamic simulations to parametrically evaluate successive interacting CMEs within a representative heliosphere. We explore CME-CME interactions for a range of orientations, launch time variations and CME handedness and quantify their geo-effectiveness via the primary solar wind variables and empirical measures of the disturbance storm time index and subsolar magnetopause sta…
The long term solar activity dependencies of ionospheric F$_1$ and F$_2$ regions' critical frequencies ($f_0F_1$ and $f_0F_2$) are analyzed for the last four solar cycles (1976--2015). We show that the ionospheric F$_1$ and F$_2$ regions have different solar activity dependencies in terms of the sunspot group (SG) numbers: F$_1$ region critical frequency ($f_0F_1$) peaks at the same time with the small SG numbers, while the $f_0F_2$ reaches its maximum at the same time with the large SG numbers, especially during the solar cycle 23. The observed differences in the sensitivity of ionospheric cr…

Influence of ICME-driven Magnetic Cloud-like and Sheath Region induced Geomagnetic Storms in causing anomalous responses of the Low-latitude Ionosphere: A Case Study
We analyse in this work the propagation and geoeffectiveness of four successive coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that erupted from the Sun during 21--23 May 2013 and that were detected in interplanetary space by the Wind and/or STEREO-A spacecraft. All these CMEs featured critical aspects for understanding so-called "problem space weather storms" at Earth. In the first three events a limb CMEs resulted in moderately geoeffective in-situ structures at their target location in terms of the disturbance storm time (Dst) index (either measured or estimated). The fourth CME, which also caused a moderat…
Electron impact ionization is critical in producing the ionospheres on many planetary bodies and, as discussed here, is critical for interpreting spacecraft and telescopic observations of the tenuous atmospheres of the icy Galilean satellites of Jupiter (Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto), which form an interesting planetary system. Fortunately, laboratory measurements, extrapolated by theoretical models, were developed and published over a number of years by K. Becker and colleagues (see Deutsch et al. 2009) to provide accurate electron impact ionization cross sections for atoms and molecules, w…
Geomagnetic storms are an important aspect of space weather and can result in significant impacts on space- and ground-based assets. The majority of strong storms are associated with the passage of interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) in the near-Earth environment. In many cases, these ICMEs can be traced back unambiguously to a specific coronal mass ejection (CME) and solar activity on the frontside of the Sun. Hence, predicting the arrival of ICMEs at Earth from routine observations of CMEs and solar activity currently makes a major contribution to the forecasting of geomagnetic sto…
To improve the forecasting capability of impactful solar energetic particle (SEP) events, the relation between coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and SEP events needs to be better understood. Here we present a statistical study of SEP occurrences and timescales with respect to the CME source locations and speeds, considering all 257 fast ($v_{CME}$ $\ge$ 900 km/s) and wide (angular width $\ge$ 60$^{\circ}$) CMEs that occurred between December 2006 and October 2017. We associate them with SEP events at energies above 10 MeV. Examination of the source region of each CME reveals that CMEs more often a…
High-energy stellar irradiation can photoevaporate planetary atmospheres, which can be observed in spectroscopic transits of hydrogen lines. For the exoplanet HD189733b, multiple observations in the Ly-$α$ line have shown that atmospheric evaporation is variable, going from undetected to enhanced evaporation in a $1.5$-year interval. Coincidentally or not, when HD189733b was observed to be evaporating, a stellar flare had just occurred 8h prior to the observation. This led to the question of whether this temporal variation in evaporation occurred due to the flare, an unseen associated coronal …
Space weather is a collective term for different solar or space phenomena that can detrimentally affect technology. However, current understanding of space weather hazards is still relatively embryonic in comparison to terrestrial natural hazards such as hurricanes or earthquakes. Indeed, certain types of space weather such as large Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) are an archetypal example of a low probability, high severity hazard. Few major events, short time-series data and a lack of consensus regarding the potential impacts on critical infrastructure have hampered the economic impact assessm…
We investigate the source eruption, propagation and expansion characteristics, and heliospheric impacts of the 2020 November 29 coronal mass ejection (CME) and associated shock, using remote sensing and in situ observations from multiple spacecraft. A potential--field source--surface model is employed to examine the coronal magnetic fields surrounding the source region. The CME and associated shock are tracked from the early stage to the outer corona using extreme ultraviolet and white light observations. Forward models are applied to determine the structures and kinematics of the CME and the …
