We introduce graphical complexes of groups, which can be thought of as a generalisation of Coxeter systems with 1-dimensional nerves. We show that these complexes are strictly developable, and we equip the resulting Basic Construction with three structures of non-positive curvature: piecewise linear CAT(0), C(6) graphical small cancellation, and a systolic one. We then use these structures to establish various properties of the fundamental groups of these complexes, such as biautomaticity and Tits Alternative. We isolate an easily checkable condition implying hyperbolicity of the fundamental groups, and we construct some non-hyperbolic examples. We also briefly discuss a parallel theory of C(4)-T(4) graphical complexes of groups and outline their basic properties.
We prove the Haagerup property (= Gromov's a-T-menability) for finitely generated groups defined by infinite presentations satisfying the graphical C'(lambda)-small cancellation condition with respect to graphs endowed with a compatible wall structure. We deduce that these groups are coarsely embeddable into a Hilbert space and that the strong Baum-Connes conjecture and, hence, the Baum-Connes conjecture with arbitrary coefficients hold for them. As the main step we show that C'(lambda)-complexes satisfy the linear separation property. Our result provides many new examples and a general techni…
We construct torsion-free hyperbolic groups without unique product whose subgroups up to some given finite index are themselves non-unique product groups. This is achieved by generalising a construction of Comerford to graphical small cancellation presentations, showing that for every subgroup $H$ of a graphical small cancellation group there exists a free group $F$ such that $H*F$ admits a graphical small cancellation presentation.
We prove the Tits Alternative for groups acting on $2$-dimensional "recurrent" complexes with uniformly bounded cell stabilisers. This class of complexes includes, among others: $2$-dimensional Euclidean buildings, $2$-dimensional systolic complexes, $B(6)$-small cancellation complexes, and standard Cayley complexes for Artin groups of extra-large type. In the appendix written jointly with Jon McCammond we extend the result to a class of $2$-dimensional Artin groups containing all large-type Artin groups.
We develop an explicit covering theory for complexes of groups, parallel to that developed for graphs of groups by Bass. Given a covering of developable complexes of groups, we construct the induced monomorphism of fundamental groups and isometry of universal covers. We characterize faithful complexes of groups and prove a conjugacy theorem for groups acting freely on polyhedral complexes. We also define an equivalence relation on coverings of complexes of groups, which allows us to construct a bijection between such equivalence classes, and subgroups or overgroups of a fixed lattice $Γ$ in th…
We extend fundamental results of small cancellation theory to groups whose presentations satisfy the generalizations of the classical C(6) and C(7) conditions in graphical small cancellation theory. Using these graphical small cancellation conditions, we construct lacunary hyperbolic groups and groups that coarsely contain prescribed infinite sequences of finite graphs. We prove that groups given by (possibly infinite) graphical C(7) presentations contain non-abelian free subgroups.
We prove that infinitely presented graphical $Gr(7)$ small cancellation groups are acylindrically hyperbolic. In particular, infinitely presented classical $C(7)$-groups and, hence, classical $C'(\frac{1}{6})$-groups are acylindrically hyperbolic. We also prove the analogous statements for the larger class of graphical small cancellation presentations over free products. We construct infinitely presented classical $C'(\frac{1}{6})$-groups that provide new examples of divergence functions of groups.
We introduce the notion of strictly systolic angled complexes. They generalize Januszkiewickz and Świątkowski's $7$-systolic simplicial complexes and also their metric counterparts, which appear as natural analogues to Huang and Osajda's metrically systolic simplicial complexes in the context of negative curvature. We prove that strictly systolic angled complexes and the groups that act on them geometrically, together with their finitely presented subgroups, are hyperbolic. We use these complexes to study the geometry of one-relator groups without torsion, and prove hyperbolicity of such group…
We prove a combination theorem for hyperbolic groups, in the case of groups acting on complexes displaying combinatorial features reminiscent of non-positive curvature. Such complexes include for instance weakly systolic complexes and C'(1/6) small cancellation polygonal complexes. Our proof involves constructing a potential Gromov boundary for the resulting groups and analyzing the dynamics of the action on the boundary in order to use Bowditch's characterization of hyperbolicity. A key ingredient is the introduction of a combinatorial property that implies a weak form of non-positive curvatu…
We generalize ideas of Jahncke from trees to square complexes. We introduce the notion of progression in $\mathrm{CAT}(0)$ square complexes. Using progression, we are able to build on the proof strategy of Dahmani-Guirardel-Przytycki to show any action of a random group with seven or more generators on a $\mathrm{CAT}(0)$ square complex has a global fixed point.
We extend Ballmann and Swiatkowski's work on $L^2$-cohomology of groups acting on simplicial complexes and provide further vanishing results of $L^2$-cohomologies. In particular, we give a new criterion for property (T) for groups acting on an n-dimensional simplcial complex.
Group presentations are implicit descriptions of 2-dimensional cell complexes with only one vertex. While such complexes are usually sufficient for topological investigations of groups, multi-vertex complexes are often preferable when the focus shifts to geometric considerations. In this article, I show how to quickly describe the most important multi-vertex 2-complexes using a slight variation of the traditional group presentation. As an illustration I describe multi-vertex 2-complexes for torus knot groups and one-relator Artin groups from which their elementary properties are easily derived…
In Shephard-Todd classification of finite (complex) reflection groups, the group $G_{31}$ appears to be the unique one in rank 4 of order 46080. We provide here an elementary construction starting from the Weyl group of type $B_6$.
We give a geometric description of a certain class of epimorphisms between complex reflection groups. We classify these epimorphisms, which can be interpreted as ``morphisms'' between the diagrams symbolizing standard presentations by generators and relations for complex reflection groups and their braid groups.
A group $G$ has a Frobenius graphical representation (GFR) if there is a simple graph $\varGamma$ whose full automorphism group is isomorphic to $G$ and it acts on vertices as a Frobenius group. In particular, any group $G$ with GFR is a Frobenius group and $\varGamma$ is a Cayley graph. The existence of an infinite family of groups with GFR whose Frobenius kernel is a non-abelian $2$-group has been an open question. In this paper, we give a positive answer by showing that the Higman group $A(f,q_0)$ has a GFR for an infinite sequence of $f$ and $q_0$.
This is an announcement of some of the results obtained as a part of the second author's Ph.D. thesis. In the first part, we prove that the fundamental group of an acylindrical complex of hyperbolic groups with finite edge groups is hyperbolic in which the vertex groups are quasiconvex. In the second part of the article, we prove the existence of Cannon-Thurston maps for certain subcomplexes of groups in acylindrical complexes of hyperbolic groups (see Theorem 0.4).
We define the notion of a sheaf over a complex of groups. As an application, we give a criterion for the developability of a complex of groups. When the developability is witnessed by a morphism to $\mathrm{GL}(V)$ for some $V$, our criterion is a characterization of developability.
The notions of nonpositive curved spaces and biautomatic groups are generalizations of the geometric properties of hyperbolic spaces and computational properties of their fundamental groups. Given the mutual origins of these conditions, one might conjecture that groups acting on nonpositive curved spaces are biautomatic. While the conventional wisdom is that counterexamples should exist, some groups acting on nonpositively curved spaces have been shown to be biautomatic. This article adds to the list of positive examples by proving that groups acting on CAT(0) simplicial 3-complexes are biauto…
We extend previous results by Cumplido, Martin and Vaskou on parabolic subgroups of large-type Artin groups to a broader family of two-dimensional Artin groups. In particular, we prove that an arbitrary intersection of parabolic subgroups of a $(2,2)$-free two-dimensional Artin group is itself a parabolic subgroup. An Artin group is $(2,2)$-free if its defining graph does not have two consecutive edges labeled by $2$. As a consequence of this result, we solve the conjugacy stability problem for this family by applying an algorithm introduced by Cumplido. All of this is accomplished by consider…
We present a simple construction which associates to every Garside group a metric space, called the additional length complex, on which the group acts. These spaces share important features with curve complexes: they are $δ$-hyperbolic, infinite, and typically locally infinite graphs. We conjecture that, apart from obvious counterexamples, additional length complexes are always of infinite diameter. We prove this conjecture for the classical example of braid groups $(B_n,Δ)$; moreover, in this framework, reducible and periodic braids act elliptically, and at least some pseudo-Anosov braids act…
We give conditions on a presentation of a group, which imply that its Cayley complex is simplicial and the flag complex of the Cayley complex is systolic. We then apply this to Garside groups and Artin groups. We give a classification of the Garside groups whose presentation using the simple elements as generators satisfy our conditions. We then also give a dual presentation for Artin groups and identify in which cases the flag complex of the Cayley complex is systolic.
In this short note, we show that a group acting geometrically on a CAT(0) cube complex with virtually abelian hyperplane-stabilisers must decompose virtually as a free product of free abelian groups and surface groups.
We consider L^p-cohomology of reflexive Banach spaces and give a spectral condition implying the vanishing of 1-cohomology with coefficients in uniformly bounded representations on a Hilbert space.
Quadric complexes are square complexes satisfying a certain combinatorial nonpositive curvature condition. These complexes generalize 2-dimensional CAT(0) cube complexes and are a square analog of systolic complexes. We introduce and study the basic properties of these complexes. Using a form of dismantlability for the 1-skeleta of finite quadric complexes we show that every finite group acting on a quadric complex stabilizes a complete bipartite subgraph of its 1-skeleton. Finally, we prove that C(4)-T(4) small cancellation groups act on quadric complexes.
Given a group acting cellularly and cocompactly on a simply-connected 2-complex, we provide a criterion establishing that all finitely generated subgroups have quasiconvex orbits. This work generalizes the "perimeter method". As an application, we show that high-powered one-relator products $A \ast B / \nclose{r^n}$ are coherent if $A$ and $B$ are coherent.
The goal of this paper is to present a number of problems about automorphism groups of nonpositively curved polyhedral complexes and their lattices, meant to highlight possible directions for future research.
A piece of a labelled graph $Γ$ defined by D. Gruber is a labelled path that embeds into $Γ$ in two essentially different ways. We prove that graphical $Gr'(\frac{1}{6})$ small cancellation groups whose associated pieces have uniformly bounded length are relative hyperbolic. In fact, we show that the Cayley graph of such group presentation is asymptotically tree-graded with respect to the collection of all embedded components of the defining graph $Γ$, if and only if the pieces of $Γ$ are uniformly bounded. This implies the relative hyperbolicity by a result of C. Druţu, D. Osin and M. Sapir.
We examine asymptotic dimension and property A for groups acting on complexes. In particular, we prove that the fundamental group of a finite, developable complex of groups will have finite asymptotic dimension provided the geometric realization of the development has finite asymptotic dimension and the vertex groups are finitely generated and have finite asymptotic dimension. We also prove that property A is preserved by this construction provided the geometric realization of the development has finite asymptotic dimension and the vertex groups all have property A. These results naturally ext…
This article generalizes two approaches for property (T) - the first is a generalization of Zuk's criterion for property (T) and the second is a generalization of the work of Kassabov regarding property (T) and subspace arrangements. In both cases we obtain new criteria for property (T) (and for vanishing of higher L2-cohomologies).
A combinatorial group-theoretic hypothesis is presented that serves as a necessary and sufficient condition for a union of connected Cockcroft two-complexes to be Cockcroft. This hypothesis has a component that can be expressed in terms of the second homology of groups. The hypothesis is applied to the study of the third homology of groups given by generators and relators.
We determine the large scale geometry of the minimal displacement set of a hyperbolic isometry of a systolic complex. As a consequence, we describe the centraliser of such an isometry in a systolic group. Using these results, we construct a low-dimensional classifying space for the family of virtually cyclic subgroups of a group acting properly on a systolic complex. Its dimension coincides with the topological dimension of the complex if the latter is at least four. We show that graphical small cancellation complexes are classifying spaces for proper actions and that the groups acting on them…
We introduce the notion of weakly systolic complexes and groups, and initiate regular studies of them. Those are simplicial complexes with nonpositive-curvature-like properties and groups acting on them geometrically. We characterize weakly systolic complexes as simply connected simplicial complexes satisfying some local combinatorial conditions. We provide several classes of examples --- in particular systolic groups and CAT(-1) cubical groups are weakly systolic. We present applications of the theory, concerning Gromov hyperbolic groups, Coxeter groups and systolic groups.
We describe a higher dimensional analogue of the Stallings folding sequence for group actions on CAT(0) cube complexes. We use it to give a characterization of quasiconvex subgroups of hyperbolic groups which act properly co-compactly on CAT(0) cube complexes via finiteness properties of their hyperplane stabilizers.
In this article, we generalise Haglund and Wise's theory of special cube complexes to groups acting on quasi-median graphs. More precisely, we define special actions on quasi-median graphs, and we show that a group which acts specially on a quasi-median graph with finitely many orbits of vertices must embed as a virtual retract into a graph product of finite extensions of clique-stabilisers. In the second part of the article, we apply the theory to fundamental groups of some graphs of groups called right-angled graphs of groups.
A JSJ-splitting of a group $G$ over a certain class of subgroups is a graph of groups decomposition of $G$ which describes all possible decompositions of $G$ as an amalgamated product or an HNN extension over subgroups lying in the given class. Such decompositions originated in 3-manifold topology. In this paper we generalize the JSJ-splitting constructions of Sela, Rips-Sela and Dunwoody-Sageev and we construct a JSJ-splitting for any finitely presented group with respect to the class of all slender subgroups along which the group splits. Our approach relies on Haefliger's theory of group act…
Ian Leary inquires whether a class of hyperbolic finitely presented groups are residually finite. We answer in the affirmative by giving a systematic version of a construction in his paper, which shows that the standard 2-complexes of these presentations have a VH-structure. This structure induces a splitting of these groups, which together with hyperbolicity, implies that these groups are residually finite.
We show, under mild hypotheses, that if each element of a finitely generated group acting on a $2$-dimensional $\mathrm{CAT}(0)$ complex has a fixed point, then there is a global fixed point. In particular all actions of finitely generated torsion groups on such complexes have global fixed points. The proofs rely on Masur's theorem on periodic trajectories in rational billiards, and Ballmann-Brin's methods for finding closed geodesics in $2$-dimensional locally $\mathrm{CAT}(0)$ complexes. As another ingredient we prove that the image of an immersed loop in a graph of girth $2π$ with length no…
Let $Σ$ be the Davis complex for a Coxeter system (W,S). The automorphism group G of $Σ$ is naturally a locally compact group, and a simple combinatorial condition due to Haglund--Paulin determines when G is nondiscrete. The Coxeter group W may be regarded as a uniform lattice in G. We show that many such G also admit a nonuniform lattice $Γ$, and an infinite family of uniform lattices with covolumes converging to that of $Γ$. It follows that the set of covolumes of lattices in G is nondiscrete. We also show that the nonuniform lattice $Γ$ is not finitely generated. Examples of $Σ$ to which ou…
Rips and Sela introduced the notion of globally stable cylinders and asked if all Gromov hyperbolic groups admit such. We prove that hyperbolic cubulated groups admit globally stable cylinders.
We study the acylindrical hyperbolicity of groups acting by isometries on CAT(0) cube complexes, and obtain simple criteria formulated in terms of stabilisers for the action. Namely, we show that a group acting essentially and non-elementarily on a finite dimensional irreducible CAT(0) cube complex is acylindrically hyperbolic if there exist two hyperplanes whose stabilisers intersect along a finite subgroup. We also give further conditions on the geometry of the complex so that the result holds if we only require the existence of a single pair of points whose stabilisers intersect along a fin…
A group is SimpHAtic if it acts geometrically on a simply connected simplicially hereditarily aspherical (SimpHAtic) complex. We show that finitely presented normal subgroups of the SimpHAtic groups are either: finite, or of finite index, or virtually free. This result applies, in particular, to normal subgroups of systolic groups. We prove similar strong restrictions on group extensions for other classes of asymptotically aspherical groups. The proof relies on studying homotopy types at infinity of groups in question. We also show that nonuniform lattices in SimpHAtic complexes (and in more g…
We examine a graph $Γ$ encoding the intersection of hyperplane carriers in a CAT(0) cube complex $\widetilde X$. The main result is that $Γ$ is quasi-isometric to a tree. This implies that a group $G$ acting properly and cocompactly on $\widetilde X$ is weakly hyperbolic relative to the hyperplane stabilizers. Using disc diagram techniques and Wright's recent result on the aymptotic dimension of CAT(0) cube complexes, we give a generalization of a theorem of Bell and Dranishnikov on the finite asymptotic dimension of graphs of asymptotically finite-dimensional groups. More precisely, we prove …
For group actions on hyperbolic CAT(0) square complexes, we show that the acylindricity of the action is equivalent to a weaker form of acylindricity phrased purely in terms of stabilisers of points, which has the advantage of being much more tractable for actions on non-locally compact spaces. For group actions on general CAT(0) square complexes, we show that an analogous characterisation holds for the so-called WPD condition. As an application, we study the geometry of generalised Higman groups on at least $5$ generators, the first historical examples of finitely presented infinite groups wi…
In this article we generalize the theory of subgroup graphs of subgroups of free groups to finite index subgroups $H$ of finitely generated groups $G$. We study and prove various properties of $H$ in relation to its subgroup graph $Γ(H)$. For a finitely generated group $G$ we consider the poset $P_{\text{fi}}(G)$ of all right cosets of all proper finite index subgroups of $G$. We use the theory of subgroup graphs to prove that for many finitely generated infinite groups the order complex $ΔP_{\text{fi}} (G)$ and the corresponding nerve complex are contractible.
We investigate the representation of a symmetric group $S_n$ on the homology of its Quillen complex at a prime $p$. For homology groups in small codimension, we derive an explicit formula for this representation in terms of the representations of symmetric groups on homology groups of $p$-uniform hypergraph matching complexes. We conjecture an explicit formula for the representation of $S_n$ on the top homology group of the corresponding hypergraph matching complex when $n \equiv 1 \bmod p$. Our conjecture follows from work of Bouc when $p=2$, and we prove the conjecture when $p=3$.
Each graph and choice of a commutative ring gives rise to an associated graphical group. In this article, we introduce and investigate graph polynomials that enumerate conjugacy classes of graphical groups over finite fields according to their sizes.
We define two complexes on which the group Aut$(F_n)$ acts freely. The homotopy groups of these are studied. They map to the K-groups of Z and are themselves a sort of pre-K-theory.
Wagoner complexes are simplicial complexes associated to groups of Kac-Moody type. They admit interesting homotopy groups which are related to integral group homology if the root datum is of 2-spherical type. We give a general definition of Wagoner complexes, exhibit some simple properties and calculate low dimensional homotopy groups. In addition, we give a definition of affine Wagoner complexes related to groups admitting a root datum with valuation.
In this note, we fill in a gap in the literature by proving that the Teichmueller modular groups (mapping class groups) are not Poincare duality groups and the complexes of curves of surfaces have infinite homotopy type (i.e. are not homotopy equivalent to a finite CW-complex).
We explain and generalise a construction due to Gromov to realise geometric small cancellation groups over graphs of groups as fundamental groups of non-positively curved 2-dimensional complexes of groups. We then give conditions so that the hyperbolicity and some finiteness properties of the small cancellation quotient can be deduced from analogous properties for the local groups of the initial graph of groups.
We prove that ideal boundary of a 7-systolic group is strongly hereditarily aspherical. For some class of 7-systolic groups we show their boundaries are connected and without local cut points, thus getting some results concerning splittings of those groups.
