The goal of this paper is to present a number of problems about automorphism groups of nonpositively curved polyhedral complexes and their lattices, meant to highlight possible directions for future research.
In the early 1990s Steve Gersten and Hamish Short proved that compact nonpositively curved triangle complexes have biautomatic fundamental groups and that compact nonpositively curved square complexes have biautomatic fundamental groups. In this article we report on the extent to which results such as these extend to nonpositively curved complexes built out a mixture of triangles and squares. Since both results by Gersten and Short have been generalized to higher dimensions, this can be viewed as a first step towards unifying Januszkiewicz and {Ś}wi{ȧ}tkowski's theory of simplicial nonpositive…
We introduce the class of nonpositively curved 2-complexes with the Isolated Flats Property. These 2-complexes are, in a sense, hyperbolic relative to their flats. More precisely, we show that several important properties of Gromov-hyperbolic spaces hold `relative to flats' in nonpositively curved 2-complexes with the Isolated Flats Property. We introduce the Relatively Thin Triangle Property, which states roughly that the fat part of a geodesic triangle lies near a single flat. We also introduce the Relative Fellow Traveller Property, which states that pairs of quasigeodesics with common endp…
We prove that each nonpositively curved square VH-complex can be turned functorially into a locally 6-large simplicial complex of the same homotopy type. It follows that any group acting geometrically on a CAT(0) square VH-complex is systolic. In particular the product of two finitely generated free groups is systolic, which answers a question of Daniel Wise. On the other hand, we exhibit an example of a compact non-VH nonpositively curved square complex, whose fundamental group is neither systolic, nor even virtually systolic.
We show that the homological finiteness length of a non-uniform lattice on a locally finite CAT(0) n-dimensional polyhedral complex is less than n. As a corollary, we obtain an upper bound for the homological finiteness length of arithmetic groups over function fields. This gives an easier proof of a result of Bux and Wortman that solved a long-standing conjecture.
Let X be a polyhedral complex with finitely many isometry classes of links. We establish a restriction on the covolumes of uniform lattices acting on X. When X is two-dimensional and has all links isometric to either a complete bipartite graph or the building for a Chevalley group of rank 2 over a field of prime order, we obtain further restrictions on covolumes.
The notions of nonpositive curved spaces and biautomatic groups are generalizations of the geometric properties of hyperbolic spaces and computational properties of their fundamental groups. Given the mutual origins of these conditions, one might conjecture that groups acting on nonpositive curved spaces are biautomatic. While the conventional wisdom is that counterexamples should exist, some groups acting on nonpositively curved spaces have been shown to be biautomatic. This article adds to the list of positive examples by proving that groups acting on CAT(0) simplicial 3-complexes are biauto…
We develop an explicit covering theory for complexes of groups, parallel to that developed for graphs of groups by Bass. Given a covering of developable complexes of groups, we construct the induced monomorphism of fundamental groups and isometry of universal covers. We characterize faithful complexes of groups and prove a conjugacy theorem for groups acting freely on polyhedral complexes. We also define an equivalence relation on coverings of complexes of groups, which allows us to construct a bijection between such equivalence classes, and subgroups or overgroups of a fixed lattice $Γ$ in th…
This article presents a machinery based on polyhedral products that produces faithful representations of graph products of finite groups and direct products of finite groups into automorphisms of free groups $\rm Aut(F_n)$ and outer automorphisms of free groups $\rm Out(F_n)$, respectively, as well as faithful representations of products of finite groups into the linear groups $\rm SL(n,\mathbb Z)$ and $\rm GL(n,\mathbb Z)$. These faithful representations are realized as monodromy representations.
We prove that numerous negatively curved simply connected locally compact polyhedral complexes, admitting a discrete cocompact group of automorphisms, have automorphism groups which are locally compact, uncountable, non linear and virtually simple. Examples include hyperbolic buildings, Cayley graphs of word hyperbolic Coxeter systems, and generalizations of cubical complexes, that we call even polyhedral complexes. We use tools introduced by Tits in the case of automorphism groups of trees, and Davis-Moussong's geometric realisation of Coxeter systems.
We study groups acting on CAT(0) square complexes. In particular we show if Y is a nonpositively curved (in the sense of A. D. Alexandrov) finite square complex and the vertex links of Y contain no simple loop consisting of five edges, then any subgroup of the fundamental group of Y either is virtually free abelian or contains a free group of rank two. In addition we discuss when a group generated by two hyperbolic isometries contains a free group of rank two and when two points in the ideal boundary of a CAT(0) 2-complex at Tits distance $π$ apart are the endpoints of a geodesic in the 2-comp…
Let $G$ be the fundamental group of a compact nonpositively curved cube complex $Y$. With respect to a basepoint $x$, one obtains an integer-valued length function on $G$ by counting the number of edges in a minimal length edge-path representing each group element. The growth series of $G$ with respect to $x$ is then defined to be the power series $G_x(t)=\sum_g t^{|g|}$ where $|g|$ denotes the length of $g$. Using the fact that $G$ admits a suitable automatic structure, $G_x(t)$ can be shown to be a rational function. We prove that if $Y$ is a manifold of dimension $n$, then this rational fun…
In this article we study the curvature properties of the order complex of a graded poset under a metric that we call the ``orthoscheme metric''. In addition to other results, we characterize which rank 4 posets have CAT(0) orthoscheme complexes and by applying this theorem to standard posets and complexes associated with four-generator Artin groups, we are able to show that the 5-string braid group is the fundamental group of a compact nonpositively curved space.
The "polyhedral product functor" produces a space from a simplicial complex L and a collection of pairs of spaces, {(A(i),B(i))}, where i ranges over the vertex set of L. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the resulting space to be aspherical. There are two similar constructions, each of which starts with a space X and a collection of subspaces, {X_i} and then produces a new space. We give conditions for the results of these constructions to be aspherical. All three techniques can be used to produce examples of closed aspherical manifolds. Abstract for Corrigenda: This note concer…
We consider finite 2-dimensional polyhedral complexes, equipped with piecewise non-positively curved, locally CAT(0) metrics. We give conditions on the complex X that ensure that its fundamental group contains a surface subgroup. Concrete examples covered by our methods include compact quotients of sufficiently thick Fuchsian buildings, where the lattice acts freely and the quotient has at least two vertices.
To any semigroup presentation $\mathcal{P}= \langle Σ\mid \mathcal{R} \rangle$ and base word $w \in Σ^+$ may be associated a nonpositively curved cube complex $S(\mathcal{P},w)$, called a Squier complex, whose underlying graph consists of the words of $Σ^+$ equal to $w$ modulo $\mathcal{P}$ where two such words are linked by an edge when one can be transformed into the other by applying a relation of $\mathcal{R}$. A group is a diagram group if it is the fundamental group of a Squier complex. In this paper, we describe hyperplanes in these cube complexes. As a first application, we determine e…
In this article, we study the fundamental groups of low-dimensional log canonical singularities, i.e., log canonical singularities of dimension at most $4$. In dimension $2$, we show that the fundamental group of an lc singularity is a finite extension of a solvable group of length at most $2$. In dimension $3$, we show that every surface group appears as the fundamental group of a $3$-fold log canonical singularity. In contrast, we show that for $r\geq 2$ the free group $F_r$ is not the fundamental group of a $3$-dimensional lc singularity. In dimension $4$, we show that the fundamental group…
We give several resolutions of the Steinberg representation St_n for the general linear group over a principal ideal domain, in particular over Z. We compare them, and use these results to prove that the computations in [AGM4] are definitive. In particular, in [AGM4] we use two complexes to compute certain cohomology groups of congruence subgroups of SL(4,Z). One complex is based on Voronoi's polyhedral decomposition of the symmetric space for SL(n,R), whereas the other is a larger complex that has an action of the Hecke operators. We prove that both complexes allow us to compute the relevant …
We investigate strictly developable simple complexes of groups with arbitrary local groups, or equivalently, group actions admitting a strict fundamental domain. We introduce a new method for computing the cohomology of such groups. We also generalise Bestvina's construction to obtain a polyhedral complex equivariantly homotopy equivalent to the standard development of the lowest possible dimension. As applications, for a group acting chamber transitively on a building of type $(W,S)$, we show that its Bredon cohomological dimension is equal to the virtual cohomological dimension of $W$ and gi…
Let $(W,S)$ be a Coxeter system with Davis complex $Σ$. The polyhedral automorphism group $G$ of $Σ$ is a locally compact group under the compact-open topology. If $G$ is a discrete group (as characterised by Haglund--Paulin), then the set $\mathcal V_u(G)$ of uniform lattices in $G$ is discrete. Whether the converse is true remains an open problem. Under certain assumptions on $(W,S)$, we show that $\mathcal V_u(G)$ is non-discrete and contains rationals (in lowest form) with denominators divisible by arbitrarily large powers of any prime less than a fixed integer. We explicitly construct our…
