We present the combination of fully differential cross sections for colour-singlet production processes at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD obtained with MATRIX and all-order resummation through RadISH. This interface allows us to achieve unprecedented accuracy for various transverse observables in $2 \rightarrow 2$ production processes. As an important application we consider $W^+ W^-$ production at the LHC, more precisely the full leptonic process $pp\to \ell^+\ell^{\prime\, -}ν_{\ell}{\barν}_{\ell^\prime}+X$ with $\ell'\neq\ell$, and we present resummed predictions for differential distributions in presence of fiducial selection cuts. In particular, we resum the transverse-momentum spectrum of the $W^+ W^-$ pair at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (N$^3$LL) accuracy and match it to the integrated NNLO cross section. The transverse-momentum spectrum of the leading jet in $W^+ W^-$ production is calculated at NNLO+NNLL accuracy. Finally, the joint resummation for the transverse-momentum spectrum of the $W^+ W^-$ pair in the presence of a jet veto is performed at NNLO+NNLL. Our phenomenological study highlights the importance of higher-order perturbative and logarithmic corrections for precision phenomenology at the LHC.
We present state-of-the-art predictions for transverse observables relevant to colour-singlet production at the LHC, in particular the transverse momentum of the colour singlet in gluon-fusion Higgs production and in neutral Drell-Yan lepton-pair production, as well as the $ϕ^*_η$ observable in Drell Yan. We perform a next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (N$^3$LL) resummation of such observables in momentum space according to the RadISH formalism, consistently including in our prediction all constant terms of relative order $α_s^3$ with respect to the Born, thereby achieving N$^3$LL$^\p…
We consider the resummation of soft and Coulomb gluons for pair-production processes of heavy coloured particles at hadron colliders, and discuss recent results on the construction of a basis in colour space that diagonalizes the soft function to all orders in perturbation theory and the determination of the two-loop soft anomalous dimension needed for NNLL resummations. We present results for the combined NLL resummation of soft gluon and Coulomb-gluon effects for squark-antisquark production at the LHC.
We present first results of resumming soft gluon effects in a simulation of high energy collisions beyond the leading-colour approximation. We work to all orders in QCD perturbation theory using a new parton branching algorithm. This amplitude evolution algorithm resembles a parton shower that is able to systematically include colour-suppressed terms. We find that colour suppressed terms can significantly contribute to jet veto cross sections.
We derive a factorization formula for the production of pairs of heavy coloured particles in hadronic collisions near the production threshold that establishes factorization of soft and Coulomb effects. This forms the basis for a combined resummation of Coulomb and soft corrections, including the non-trivial interference of the two effects. We develop a resummation formalism valid at NNLL accuracy using the momentum-space approach to soft gluon resummation. We present numerical results for the NLL resummed squark-antisquark production cross section at the LHC and Tevatron, including also the c…
We perform resummation of soft gluon corrections to the total cross section for the process $pp \to t\bar{t}H$. The resummation is carried out at next-to-leading-logarithmic (NLL) accuracy using the Mellin space technique, extending its application to the class of $2 \to 3$ processes. We present an analytical result for the soft anomalous dimension for a hadronic production of two coloured massive particles in association with a colour singlet. We discuss the impact of resummation on the numerical prediction for the associated Higgs boson production with top quarks at the LHC.
We present state-of-the art predictions for the production of supersymmetric squarks and gluinos at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), including soft-gluon resummation up to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy, the resummation of Coulomb corrections and the contribution from bound states. The NNLL corrections enhance the cross-section predictions and reduce the scale uncertainty to a level of 5-10%. The NNLL resummed cross-section predictions can be obtained from the computer code NNLL-fast, which also provides the scale uncertainty and the pdf and alpha_s error.
We consider the factorization and resummation of soft and Coulomb gluons for pair-production processes of heavy coloured particles at hadron colliders, and discuss: the construction of a colour basis that diagonalizes the leading soft function to all orders in perturbation theory; the determination of the two-loop soft anomalous dimension needed for NNLL resummations; and a general formula that provides all logarithmically enhanced O(alpha_s^2) correction requiring as process-independent input only the one-loop hard matching coefficients.
We consider the production of a pair of heavy quarks ($Q{\bar Q}$) in hadronic collisions. When the transverse momentum $q_T$ of the heavy-quark pair is much smaller than its invariant mass, the QCD perturbative expansion is affected by large logarithmic terms that must be resummed to all-orders. This behavior is well known from the simpler case of hadroproduction of colourless high-mass systems, such as vector or Higgs boson(s). In the case of $Q{\bar Q}$ production, the final-state heavy quarks carry colour charge and are responsible for additional soft radiation (through direct emission and…
We consider the transverse-momentum distribution of colourless high-mass systems (lepton pairs, vector bosons, Higgs particles...) produced in hadronic collisions. We briefly review a formalism for the all-order resummation of the logarithmically-enhanced contributions at small transverse momenta, and we present an illustrative selection of numerical results obtained by using our method.
We consider QCD radiative corrections to the production of colourless high-mass systems in hadron collisions. We show that the recent computation of the soft-virtual corrections to Higgs boson production at N$^3$LO [1] together with the universality structure of soft-gluon emission can be exploited to extract the general expression of the hard-virtual coefficient that contributes to threshold resummation at N$^3$LL accuracy. The hard-virtual coefficient is directly related to the process-dependent virtual amplitude through a universal (process-independent) factorization formula that we explici…
In this PhD thesis, we analyze and generalize the renormalization group approach to the resummation of large logarithms in the perturbative expansion due to soft and collinear multiparton emissions. In particular, we present a generalization of this approach to prompt photon production. It is interesting to see that also with the more intricate two-scale kinematics that characterizes prompt photon production in the soft limit, it remains true that resummation simply follows from general kinematic properties of the phase space. Also, this approach does not require a separate treatment of indivi…
We present the general expressions for the resummation, up to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, of Sudakov-type logarithms in processes with an arbirtrary number of hard-scattering partons. These results document the formulae used by the authors in several previous phenomenological studies. The resummation formulae presented here, which are valid for phase-space factorizable observables, determine the resummation correction in a process-independent fashion. All process dependence is encoded in the colour and flavour structure of the leading order and virtual one-loop amplitudes, and in Sud…
We study the effect of soft gluon emission in the hadroproduction of gluino-gluino and squark-antisquark pairs at the next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy within the framework of the minimal supersymmetric model. We present the calculation of the one-loop soft anomalous dimension matrices controlling the colour evolution of the underlying hard-scattering processes. The numerical results for resummed cross sections for proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider are discussed in detail.

We calculate the two-loop and one-loop/one-emission contributions required for soft gluon evolution at the next-to-leading order. The colour structures are expressed in the colour flow basis, and the kinematic dependence and loop integrals are expressed in terms of multiple cuts and phase-space-like integrals. This directly allows to use them in the resummation of non-global observables and improved parton shower algorithms beyond the leading order and beyond the leading colour limit. Within the colour flow basis it becomes apparent that correlations beyond a dipole picture emerge even in colo…
We present a more reliable approach to approximate the unknown next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N3LO) transverse momentum distribution of colourless final states, namely the Higgs boson produced via gluon fusion and the lepton pair produced via Drell--Yan (DY) mechanism. The approximation we construct relies on the combination of various resummation formalisms -- namely threshold, small-pt and high energy resummations -- by exploiting the singularity structure of the large logarithms in Mellin space. We show that for the case of Higgs boson production, the approximate N3LO transverse mom…
We study the effect of soft gluon emission in the hadroproduction of squark-antisquark and gluino-gluino pairs at the next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy within the framework of the minimal supersymmetric model. The one-loop soft anomalous dimension matrices controlling the colour evolution of the underlying hard-scattering processes are calculated. We present the resummed total cross sections and show numerical results for proton-proton collisions at 14 TeV. The size of the NLL contribution to the cross section and the reduction of the scale dependence of the theoretical predictions du…
We present the explicit expressions for the resummation of large-x Sudakov effects in the transverse-energy distribution of prompt-photons produced in hadronic collisions, to next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy. Fragmentation processes do not contribute to the Sudakov resummation at NLL level. In Mellin space, the resummed radiative factor factorizes in the product of independent radiators for the two initial and the one final coloured partons appearing in the Born process, times a simple factor describing the soft-gluon interferences between initial and final states. The formulae are g…
We present a factorization formula for the production of pairs of heavy coloured particles in hadronic collisions at the production threshold, which forms the basis for the resummation of soft gluons and Coulomb gluons. We construct a basis in colour space that diagonalizes the soft function appearing in the factorization formula to all orders in perturbation theory. This extends recent results on the structure of soft anomalous dimensions and allows us to determine an analytic expression for the two-loop soft anomalous dimension at threshold for all production processes of interest.
We sum the leading logarithms $α_s^n \ln^{2 n-1}(1-z)$, n=1,2,... near the kinematic threshold $z=m_H^2/\hat{s}\to 1$ at next-to-leading power in the expansion in (1-z) for Higgs production in gluon fusion. We highlight the new contributions compared to Drell-Yan production in quark-antiquark annihilation and show that the final result can be obtained to all orders by the substitution of the colour factor $C_F\to C_A$, confirming previous fixed-order results and conjectures. We also provide a numerical analysis of the next-to-leading power leading logarithms, which indicates that they are nume…
In Z^0 decay into prompt charmonium, ie. charmonium not originating from B-meson decays, the most important contribution is expected to come from colour-octet mechanisms. However, previous fixed-order calculations of the colour-octet contribution contain large logarithms which, in a more complete treatment, should be resummed to all orders. We study this resummation by using a Monte Carlo QCD cascade model and find that the fixed-order colour-octet result is diminished by 15%. We compare the Monte Carlo calculations with results obtained by using analytical evolution equations.
We consider QCD radiative corrections to the production of colourless high-mass systems in hadron collisions. The logarithmically-enhanced contributions at small transverse momentum are treated to all perturbative orders by a universal resummation formula that depends on a single process-dependent hard factor. We show that the hard factor is directly related to the all-order virtual amplitude of the corresponding partonic process. The direct relation is universal (process independent), and it is expressed by an all-order factorization formula that we explicitly evaluate up to the next-to-next-…
It was shown recently that standard resummation of logarithms of $Q/p_T$ can be supplemented with the resummation of logarithmic contributions at large $x=Q^2/s$ in the case of a colourless final state such as Higgs produced via gluon fusion or the production of a lepton pair via Drell--Yan mechanism. Such an improved transverse momentum resummation takes into account soft emissions that are emitted at very small angles. We report on recent phenomenological studies of a combined threshold-improved $p_T$ and threshold resummation formalism to the Higgs boson produced at the LHC where small-$p_T…
In this proceeding we consider QCD radiative corrections to the production of colourless high-mass systems in hadron collisions. At small transverse momentum the logarithmically-enhanced contributions can be organized to all perturbative orders by a universal resummation formula that depends on a single process-dependent hard factor. We show that the hard factor is directly related to the all-order virtual amplitude of the corresponding partonic process by a universal (process independent) formula, which we explicitly evaluate up to two-loop level. Once the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO)…
We present an approach to the momentum-space resummation of global, recursive infrared and collinear safe observables featuring kinematic zeros away from the Sudakov limit. In the hadro-production of a generic colour singlet, we consider the family of inclusive observables which do not depend on the rapidity of the radiation, prime examples being the transverse momentum of the singlet, and $ϕ^*$ in Drell-Yan pair production. We derive a resummation formula valid up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-logaritmic accuracy for the considered observables. This formula reduces exactly to the customa…
We propose a new approach to the resummation of the transverse-momentum distribution of a high-mass colour-singlet system in hadronic collisions. The resummation is performed in momentum space and is free of kinematic singularities at small transverse momentum. We derive a formula accurate at the next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic level, and present the first matched predictions to next-to-next-to-leading order for Higgs-boson production in gluon fusion at the LHC. This method can be adapted to all observables featuring kinematic cancellations in the infrared region.
We study next-to-leading-power (NLP) threshold corrections in colour-singlet production processes, with particular emphasis on Drell-Yan (DY) and single-Higgs production. We assess the quality of the partonic and hadronic threshold expansions for each process up to NNLO. We determine numerically the NLP leading-logarithmic (LL) resummed contribution in addition to the leading-power next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (LP NNLL) resummed DY and Higgs cross sections, matched to NNLO. We find that the inclusion of NLP logarithms is numerically more relevant than increasing the precision to N$^3$LL…
We give a description of double parton scattering with measured transverse momenta in the final state, extending the formalism for factorisation and resummation developed by Collins, Soper and Sterman for the production of colourless particles. After a detailed analysis of their colour structure, we derive and solve evolution equations in rapidity and renormalisation scale for the relevant soft factors and double parton distributions. We show how in the perturbative regime, transverse momentum dependent double parton distributions can be expressed in terms of simpler nonperturbative quantities…
The studies of the associated production processes of a top-quark pair with a colour-singlet boson, e.g. Higgs, W or Z, are among the highest priorities of the LHC programme. Correspondingly, improvements in precision of theoretical predictions for these processes are of central importance. In this talk, we review our latest results on resummation of soft gluon corrections. The resummation is carried out using the direct QCD Mellin space technique in three-particle invariant mass kinematics. We discuss the impact of the soft gluon corrections on predictions for total cross sections and differe…
We consider the impact on WW production of the unique dimension-six operator coupling gluons to the Higgs field. In order to study this process, we have to appropriately model the effect of a veto on additional jets. This requires the resummation of large logarithms of the ratio of the maximum jet transverse momentum and the invariant mass of the W boson pair. We have performed such resummation at the appropriate accuracy for the Standard Model (SM) background and for a signal beyond the SM (BSM), and devised a simple method to interface jet-veto resummations with fixed-order event generators.…
We consider the transverse-momentum ($q_T$) distribution of $Z$ bosons produced in hadronic collisions. At small values of $q_T$, we perform the analytic resummation of the logarithmically enhanced QED contributions up to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, including the mixed QCD-QED contributions at leading logarithmic accuracy. Resummed results are consistently matched with the next-to-leading fixed-order results (i.e. $\mathcal{O}(α^2)$) at small, intermediate and large values of $q_T$. We combine the QED corrections with the known QCD results at next-to-next-to-leading order ($\mathcal{…
Non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) predicts colour octet contributions to be significant not only in many production processes of heavy quarkonia but also in their radiative decays. We investigate the photon energy distributions in these processes in the endpoint region. There the velocity expansion of NRQCD breaks down which requires a resummation of an infinite class of colour octet operators to so-called shape functions. We model these non-perturbative functions by the emission of a soft gluon cluster in the initial state. We found that the spectrum in the endpoint region is poorly understood if …
Perturbative cross-sections in QCD are beset by logarithms of kinematic invariants, whose arguments vanish when heavy particles are produced near threshold. Contributions of this type often need to be summed to all orders in the coupling, in order to improve the behaviour of the perturbative expansion, and it has long been known how to do this at leading power in the threshold variable, using a variety of approaches. Recently, the problem of extending this resummation to logarithms suppressed by a single power of the threshold variable has received considerable attention. In this paper, we sho…

Three-jet event-shape distributions can be exploited to investigate the dependence of hadronisation effects on the colour and the geometry of the underlying hard event. We present here the first comparison of data in e+e- annihilation and state-of-the-art theoretical predictions, including resummation of large logarithms at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy matched to exact next-to-leading order and leading non-perturbative power corrections.
We consider QCD radiative corrections to the associated production of a heavy-quark pair ($Q{\bar Q}$) with a generic colourless system $F$ at hadron colliders. We discuss the resummation formalism for the production of the $Q{\bar Q}F$ system at small values of its total transverse momentum $q_T$. The perturbative expansion of the resummation formula leads to the explicit ingredients that can be used to apply the $q_T$ subtraction formalism to fixed-order calculations for this class of processes. We use the $q_T$ subtraction formalism to perform a fully differential perturbative computation f…
It has been argued by Caron-Huot that infrared contributions to the jet quenching parameter in hot QCD, denoted by qhat, can be extracted from an analysis of a certain static-potential related observable within the dimensionally reduced effective field theory. Following this philosophy, the order of magnitude of a non-perturbative contribution to qhat from the colour-magnetic scale, g^2T/pi, is estimated. The result is small; it is probably below the parametrically perturbative but in practice slowly convergent contributions from the colour-electric scale, whose all-orders resummation therefor…
It is well known that cross-sections in perturbative QCD receive large corrections from soft and collinear radiation, whose properties must be resummed to all orders in the coupling. Whether or not the universal properties of this radiation can be extended to next-to-leading power (NLP) in the threshold expansion has been the subject of much recent study. In this paper, we consider two types of NLP effects: the interplay of next-to-soft and collinear radiation in processes with final state jets and the NLP contributions stemming from soft quarks. We derive an NLP amplitude for soft gluons and …
We present all-order expressions for the leading double-logarithmic threshold contributions to the quark-gluon coefficient functions for inclusive Higgs-boson production in the heavy top-quark limit and for Drell-Yan lepton-pair production. These results have been derived using the structure of the unfactorized cross sections in dimensional regularization and the large-x resummation of the gluon-quark and quark-gluon splitting functions. The resummed coefficient functions, which are identical up to colour factor replacements, are similar to their counterparts in deep-inelastic scattering but s…
The spectral function related to the correlator of two colour-electric fields along a Polyakov loop determines the momentum diffusion coefficient of a heavy quark near rest with respect to a heat bath. We compute this spectral function at next-to-leading order, O(alpha_s^2), in the weak-coupling expansion. The high-frequency part of our result (omega >> T), which is shown to be temperature-independent, is accurately determined thanks to asymptotic freedom; the low-frequency part of our result (omega << T), in which Hard Thermal Loop resummation is needed in order to cure infrared divergences, …
We compute the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) soft and virtual QCD corrections for the partonic cross section of colourless-final state processes in hadronic collisions. The results are valid to all orders in the dimensional regularization parameter $\ep$. The dependence of the results on a particular process is given through finite contributions to the one and two-loop amplitudes. To evaluate the accuracy of the soft-virtual approximation we compare it with the full NNLO result for Drell-Yan and Higgs boson production via gluon fusion. We also provide a universal expression for the hard…
Non-global logarithms arise from the sensitivity of collider observables to soft radiation in limited angular regions of phase space. Their resummation to next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) order has been a long standing problem and its solution is relevant in the context of precision all-order calculations in a wide variety of collider processes and observables. In this article, we consider observables sensitive only to soft radiation, characterised by the absence of Sudakov double logarithms, and we derive a set of integro-differential equations that describes the resummation of NLL soft corr…
We present the calculation of the two-loop soft function for the transverse momentum distribution of the leading jet produced in association with any colour-singlet system (e.g.~a Higgs or a $Z$ boson). This constitutes a central ingredient for the resummation of the above distribution as well as the jet-vetoed cross section at the next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic order, both of which play an important role in the precision physics programme at the Large Hadron Collider. The calculation is performed in soft-collinear effective theory with an appropriate regularisation of the rapidit…
We revisit the calculation of the average jet multiplicity in high-energy collisions. First, we introduce a new definition of (sub)jet multiplicity based on Lund declusterings obtained using the Cambridge jet algorithm. We develop a new systematic resummation approach. This allows us to compute both the Lund and the Cambridge average multiplicities to next-to-next-to-double (NNDL) logarithmic accuracy in electron-positron annihilation, an order higher in accuracy than previous works in the literature. We match our resummed calculation to the exact NLO ($\mathcal{O}(α_s^2)$) result, showing pre…
The longitudinal-electric oscillations of the hot gluon system are studied beyond the well known leading order term at high temperature $T$ and small coupling $g$. The coefficient $η$ in $ω^2 = m^2 \, (1+ η\, g \wu N \, )$ is calculated, where \hbox{$ω\equiv ω(\vc q =0)$} is the long-wavelength limit of the frequency spectrum, $N$ the number of colours and $m^2=g^2 N T^2/9$. In the course of this, for the real part of the gluon self-energy, the Braaten-Pisarski resummation programme is found to work well in all details. The coefficient $η$ is explicitly seen to be gauge independent within the …
We compute the energy dependence of the P_T-integrated cross section of directly produced quarkonia in pp collisions at next-to-leading order (NLO), namely up to alpha_s^3, within nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD). Our analysis is based on the idea that the P_T-integrated and the P_T-differential cross sections can be treated as two different observables. The colour-octet NRQCD parameters needed to predict the P_T-integrated yield can thus be extracted from the fits of the P_T-differential cross sections at mid and large P_T. For the first time, the total cross section is evaluated in NRQCD at full …
We present a novel method to combine QCD calculations at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) with parton shower (PS) simulations, that can be applied to the production of heavy systems in hadronic collisions, such as colour singlets or a $t\bar{t}$ pair. The NNLO corrections are included by connecting the MiNLO$^\prime$ method with transverse-momentum resummation, and they are calculated at generation time without any additional reweighting, making the algorithm considerably efficient. Moreover, the combination of different jet multiplicities does not require any unphysical merging scale, and…
The perturbative description of certain differential distributions across a wide kinematic range requires the matching of fixed-order perturbation theory with resummation of large logarithmic corrections to all orders. We present precise matched predictions for transverse-momentum distributions in Higgs boson (H) and Drell-Yan pair (DY) production as well as for the closely related ${ϕ^{*}_η}$ distribution at the LHC. The calculation is exclusive in the Born kinematics, and allows for arbitrary fiducial selection cuts on the decay products of the colour singlets, which is of primary relevance …
We construct a resummation at partial next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy for hadronic top-quark pair production near partonic threshold, including simultaneously soft-gluon and Coulomb corrections, and use this result to obtain approximate next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order predictions for the total top-quark pair-production cross section at the LHC. We generalize a required one-loop potential in non-relativistic QCD to the colour-octet case and estimate the remaining unknown two-loop potentials and three-loop anomalous dimensions. We obtain a moderate correction of $1.5\%…
We report next-to-leading order perturbative QCD predictions of 4 jet event shape variables for the process e+e- \to 4 jets obtained using the general purpose Monte Carlo EERAD2. This program is based on the known `squared' one loop matrix elements for the virtual γ^* \to 4 parton contribution and squared matrix elements for 5 parton production. To combine the two distinct final states numerically we present a hybrid of the commonly used subtraction and slicing schemes based on the colour antenna structure of the final state which can be readily applied to other processes. We have checked that…
