The studies of the associated production processes of a top-quark pair with a colour-singlet boson, e.g. Higgs, W or Z, are among the highest priorities of the LHC programme. Correspondingly, improvements in precision of theoretical predictions for these processes are of central importance. In this talk, we review our latest results on resummation of soft gluon corrections. The resummation is carried out using the direct QCD Mellin space technique in three-particle invariant mass kinematics. We discuss the impact of the soft gluon corrections on predictions for total cross sections and differential distributions.
After motivation and short presentation of the minimal supersymmetric model with R-symmetry (MRSSM), we address the question of accomodating the measured Higgs boson mass in accordance with electroweak precision observables and LHC constraints.
With an eye toward LHC processes in which theoretical precisions of 1 percent are desired, we introduce the theory of the simultaneous YFS resummation of QED and QCD to compute the size of the expected resummed soft radiative threshold effects in precision studies of heavy particle production at the LHC. Our results show that both QED and QCD soft threshold effects must be controlled to be on the conservative side to achieve such precision goals.
The search for electroweak superpartners has recently moved to the centre of interest at the LHC. We provide the currently most precise theoretical predictions for these particles, use them to assess the precision of parton shower simulations, and reanalyse public experimental results assuming more general decompositions of gauginos and sleptons.
A precision measurement of the LHC luminosity is a key ingredient for its physics program. In this contribution first of all we review the theoretical accuracy in the computation of LHC benchmark processes. Then we discuss the impact of available and future LHC data in global analysis of parton distributions, with emphasis on the treatment of normalization uncertainties. Finally we present some suggestions for the physics opportunities that can become available by measuring ratios of cross sections between the 8 TeV and 7 TeV runs.
IR-improvement based on amplitude-level resummation allows one to control unintegrable results in quantum field theory with arbitrary precision in principle. We illustrate such resummation in specific examples in precision LHC and FCC physics and in quantum gravity.
This paper discusses some aspects of the estimates of Higgs boson coupling sensitivities for LHC and ILC presented at the Snowmass 2013 meeting. I estimate the measurement accuracies underlying the CMS presentation to Snowmass. I present new fits for the ILC capabilities. I present some joints fits to prospective LHC and ILC data that demonstrates the synergy of the High-Luminosity LHC and ILC programs. Contributed to the proceedings of the Snowmass 2013 Community Summer Study.
NNLO QCD corrections to the production and decay of top-quark pairs allow performing precision phenomenology in inclusive and fiducial phase spaces. State-of-the-art predictions for top-quark pair production and their comparison to recent collider data are discussed.
We present the recent developments in exact amplitude-based resummation methods for non-Abelian gauge theories as they relate to precision LHC physics. We discuss QEDXQCD exponentiation, shower/ME matching, IR-improved DGLAP-CS theory and implications, as developed by one of us (BFLW), for a UV finite theory of quantum general relativity.
We summarize the recent progress in a new approach to precision LHC physics based on the IR-improved DGLAP-CS theory as it relates to a new MC friendly exponentiated scheme for precision calculation of higher order corrections to LHC physics in which IR singularities from both QED and QCD are canceled to all orders in αand in α_s simultaneously in the presence of rigorous shower/ME matching. We present the first MC data comparing the implied new showers themselves with the standard ones using the HERWIG6.5 MC event generator as a test case at LHC energies.
We discuss the current status of LHC physics from the perspective of precision theory predictions for the attendant QCD and EW higher order corrections. We focus on the interplay between the available data and the predictions for these data viewed in the context of the establishment of baselines for what is needed to exploit fully the discovery potential of the existing LHC data and the data expected by the end of the second LHC run (i.e., 300fb$^{-1}$). We conclude that significant improvement in the currently used theoretical predictions will be mandatory. Possible strategies to achieve such…
We present an overview of the use of IR-improvement of unintegrable singularities in the infrared regime via amplitude-based resummation in $\mathrm{QED} \times \mathrm{QCD}$ $\subset$ $\mathrm{SU}(2)_L \times \mathrm{U}_1 \times \mathrm{SU}(3)^c$. We work in the context of precision LHC/FCC physics. While illustrating such IR-improvement in specific examples, we discuss new results and new issues.
Now that the mass limits for gluinos have been pushed to the few-TeV range, they might only be visible at the LHC in associated production with lighter gauginos. We compute the corresponding cross section at next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) and next-to-leading order (NLO) precision in the QCD coupling constant. The resulting expressions are implemented in the public code RESUMMINO and can be directly used in the corresponding experimental searches.
We present a global analysis of the Higgs and electroweak sector based on LHC Run II and electroweak precision observables. We show which measurements provide the leading constraints on Higgs-related operators, and how the achieved LHC precision makes it necessary to combine rate measurements with electroweak precision observables. The SFitter framework allows us to include kinematic distributions beyond pre-defined ATLAS and CMS observables, independently study correlations, and avoid Gaussian assumptions for theory uncertainties. These Run II results are a step towards a precision physics pr…
Searches for new physics at the LHC will increasingly depend on identifying deviations from precision Standard Model (SM) predictions. At the higher energy scales involved for the LHC Run 2, the heavy quarks play a more prominent role than at the Tevatron. Recent theoretical developments improve our ability to address multi-scale problems and properly incorporate heavy quark masses across the full kinematic range. These developments are incorporated into the new nCTEQ15 PDFs, and we review these developments with respect to sample Run 2 measurements, and identify areas where additional effort …
We describe the program KKMC-hh, which calculates Z boson processes in hadronic collisions using coherent exclusive exponentiation (CEEX) with exact second-order photonic corrections at next-to-leading log and first-order weak vertex corrections, including initial and final state photonic radiation and initial-final interference. We describe current applications to precision forward-backward asymmetry calculations for the measurement of the electroweak mixing angle at the LHC.
We study the forward-backward asymmetry $A_{FB}$ in $pp \to \ell^+\ell^-$ at the Z peak within the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT). We find that this observable provides per mille level constraints on the vertex corrections of the Z boson to quarks, which close a flat direction in the electroweak precision SMEFT fit. Moreover, we show that current $A_{FB}$ data is precise enough so that its inclusion in the fit improves significantly LEP bounds even in simple New Physics setups. This demonstrates that the LHC can compete with and complement LEP when it comes to precision measureme…
After a brief introduction to the state of the art of theoretical predictions for electroweak vector-boson production with both top and bottom quarks at the LHC, we review the case of Z-boson production with b jets, and discuss the impact of NLO QCD+EW corrections and finite b-quark mass effects on the theoretical prediction for Z+b jet production.
Challenges for precision measurements at the LHC are discussed and a proposal how to move forward to overcome the LHC-specific precision brick-walls is presented.
If supersymmetry exists at the electroweak scale, then it should be discovered at the LHC. Determining masses, of supersymmetric particles however, is more difficult. In this paper, methods are discussed to determine combinations of masses and of branching ratios precisely from experimentally observable distributions. In many cases such measurements alone can greatly constrain the particular supersymmetric model and determine its parameters with an accuracy of a few percent. Most of the results shown correspond to one year of running at LHC at ``low luminosity'.
We discuss the recent derivation of the two loop virtual QCD corrections to the W boson pair production in the quark-anti-quark-annihilation channel in the limit where all kinematical invariants are large compared to the mass of the W boson. In particular, we describe the use of the PSLQ algorithm on an example integral.
We find new limits on the $λ'_{3jk}$ R-parity violating (RPV) couplings of the minimal supersymmetric standard model, using Drell-Yan differential cross sections at the LHC and electroweak precision measurements from LEP and SLC. Specifically, limits on six out of the nine $λ'_{3jk}$-couplings, with $j=1\text{ or }2$, are obtained using Drell-Yan data, with the remaining three (for $j=3$) bounded by precision electroweak data. We also update the limits on all $λ'_{ijk}$-couplings using electroweak data and find new bounds on $λ'_{132}$ and $λ'_{232}$ that are stronger than obtained elsewhere. …
We present precision predictions for scalar leptoquark pair production at the LHC. Apart from QCD contributions, included are the lepton $t$-channel exchange diagrams relevant in the light of the recent $B$-flavour anomalies. All contributions are evaluated at next-to-leading order in QCD and improved by resummation, in the threshold regime, of the corrections from soft-gluon radiation at the next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy. All corrections are found equally relevant. Furthermore, the impact of different sets of parton distribution functions is discussed. These predictions constit…
We use comparison with recent LHCb data on single Z/γ^* production and decay to lepton pairs as a vehicle to study the current status of the application of our approach of {\it exact} amplitude-based resummation in quantum field theory to precision QCD calculations, by realistic MC event generator methods, as needed for precision LHC physics. This represents an extension of the phase space of our previous studies based on comparison with CMS and ATLAS data, as the pseudo-rapidity range measured by the LHCb for leptons in the data we study is 2.0<η< 4.5 to be compared with |η|<4.6(2.4) in our p…
In some processes at the LHC, theoretical precisions of 1 percent are desired. With an eye toward such precisions, we introduce the theory of the simultaneous YFS resummation of QED and QCD to compute the size of the expected resummed soft radiative threshold effects in precision studies of heavy particle production at the LHC. Our results, that the soft QED threshold effects are at the level of 0.3 percent whereas the soft QCD threshold effects enter at the level of 20 percent, show that both must be controlled to be on the conservative side to achieve such precision goals.
In this paper we propose a strategy for measuring the inclusive W-boson production processes at LHC. This strategy exploits simultaneously the unique flexibility of the LHC collider in running variable beam particle species at variable beam energies, and the configuration flexibility of the LHC detectors. We propose their concrete settings for a precision measurement of the Standard Model parameters. These dedicated settings optimise the use of the Z boson and Drell-Yan pair production processes as ``the standard reference candles''. The presented strategy allows to factorise and to directly m…
We present the elements of the IR-improved DGLAP-CS theory as it relates to the new MC friendly exponentiated scheme for precision calculation of higher order corrections to LHC physics in which IR singularities from both QED and QCD are canceled to all orders in alpha and in alpha_s simultaneously in the presence of rigorous shower/ME matching. We present the first MC data comparing the implied new showers themselves with the standard ones using the HERWIG6.5 MC event generator as a test case at LHC energies. As expected, the IR-improved shower re-populates lower values of the energy fraction…
The Standard Model extensions with vector-like states which have either zero hypercharge or zero weak isospin are rather poorly constrained by the electroweak precision measurements. Such new states would however modify the running of the gauge couplings at high energies. As a result, the Drell-Yan process $p p \to l^+ l^-$ at the LHC places useful constraints on these models. The relevant observables include both the di-lepton invariant mass distribution $M_{l l}$ and the forward-backward asymmetry $A_{FB}$. We find that the LHC Run 1 data and the initial data from Run 2 surpass the sensitivi…
We present a new approach to the realization of hard fixed-order corrections in predictions for the processes probed in high energy colliding hadron beam devices, with some emphasis on the LHC and the future FCC devices. We show that the usual unphysical divergence of such corrections as one approaches the soft limit is removed in our approach, so that we would render the standard results to be closer to the observed exclusive distributions. We use the single Z/γ* production and decay to lepton pairs as our prototypical example, but we stress that the approach has general applicability. In thi…
We reexamine the constrained version of the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with semi universal parameters at the GUT scale (CNMSSM). We include constraints from collider searches for Higgs and SUSY particles, upper bound on the relic density of dark matter, measurements of the muon anomalous magnetic moment and of B-physics observables as well as direct searches for dark matter. We then study the prospects for direct detection of dark matter in large scale detectors and comment on the prospects for discovery of heavy Higgs states at the LHC.
With an eye toward the usual unphysical divergence of hard fixed-order corrections in predictions for the processes probed in high energy colliding hadron beam devices as one approaches the soft limit, we present a new approach to the realization of such corrections, with some emphasis on the LHC and the future FCC devices. We show that the respective divergence is removed in our approach. This means that we would render the standard results to be closer to the observed exclusive distributions. While we stress that the approach has general applicability, we use the single Z and virtual gamma p…
We present precision calculations of the transverse-momentum spectrum, the invariant-mass distribution and the total cross section for Z' production at hadron colliders. We implement joint resummation at the next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy and consistently match the obtained result with the pure perturbative result at the first order in the strong coupling constant. We confront our numerical predictions with the Monte Carlo generator PYTHIA and with a new implementation of extra neutral gauge bosons in the Monte Carlo generator MC@NLO. The impact of scale dependence is also studied.
This paper is the second of the series of papers proposing dedicated strategies for precision measurements of the Standard Model parameters at the LHC. The common feature of these strategies is their robustness with respect to the systematic measurement and modeling error sources. Their impact on the precision of the measured parameters is reduced using dedicated observables and dedicated measurement procedures which exploit flexibilities of the collider and detector running modes. In the present paper we focus our attention on the measurement of the charge asymmetry of the W-boson mass. This …
The extraction of the W-boson mass, a fundamental parameter of the Standard Model, from hadron-hadron collision requires precise theory predictions. In this regard, angular coefficients are crucial to model the dynamics of W-boson production. In this work, we provide, for the first time, angular coefficients at NNLO QCD + NLO EW accuracy for finite transverse momentum W-boson at the LHC. The corrections can reach up to 10% in certain regions of phase space. They are accompanied by a significant reduction of the scale uncertainty. This work should, besides providing reference values for theory-…
The current status of electroweak precision tests after the discovery of the Higgs boson is reviewed, both from a phenomenological and from a theoretical point of view. Predictions for all Z-pole quantities are now available at the complete fermionic two-loop order within the Standard Model. The calculation of these corrections is described based on the example of the total Z-boson width. Finally, an outlook on the experimental improvements and theoretical challenges for a future high-luminosity e+e- collider is given.
LHC collisions can act as a source of photons in the initial state. This mechanism plays an important role in the production of particles with electroweak couplings, and a precise account of photon-initiated (PI) production at the LHC is a key ingredient in the LHC precision physics programme. I will discuss the possibility of modelling PI processes directly via the structure function approach. This can provide percent level precision in the production cross sections, and is therefore well positioned to account for LHC precision requirements. This formalism in addition allows one to make use o…
One may use amplitude-based resummation in QED $\otimes$ QCD to achieve IR-improvement of unintegrable singularities in the infrared regime to arbitrary precision in principle. We illustrate such improvement in specific examples in precision LHC/FCC physics.
This thesis discusses recent advances in precision calculations of quantum chromodynamics and their application to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) physics program and beyond.
We compare the sensitivity of precision measurements of lepton flavour observables to the reach of the LHC in a case study of lepton-flavour violating operators of dimension six with two leptons and two quarks. For light quarks precision measurements always yield the more stringent constraints. The LHC complements precision measurements for operators with heavier quarks. Competitive limits can already be set on the cutoff scale $Λ$ > 600 - 800 GeV for operators with right-handed $τ$ leptons using the LHC run 1 data.
The potential of the LHeC, a future electron-proton collider, for precision Deep Inelastic Scattering measurements is reviewed with particular emphasis on the reduction of uncertainties on the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton. The interpretation of possible Beyond Standard Model (BSM) signals at the LHC is crucially dependent on precise knowledge of the predictions of the Standard Model (SM) and the uncertainties on PDFs are a limiting factor. The LHeC project, running in parallel with later stages of LHC running, would provide much improved precision on the PDFs as compared …
Precision measurements of the Drell-Yan (DY) cross section at the LHC constrain new physics scenarios that involve new states with electroweak (EW) charges. We analyze these constraints and apply them to models that can address the LHC diphoton excess at 750 GeV. We confront these findings with LEP EW precision tests and show that DY provides stronger constraints than the LEP data. While 8 TeV data can already probe some parts of the interesting region of parameter space, LHC14 results are expected to cover a substantial part of the relevant terrain. We derive the bounds from the existing data…
The complete next-to-next-to leading order (NNLO) QCD correction matched with next-to-next-to leading logarithm (NNLL) has been studied for Drell-Yan production through spin-2 particle at the Large hadron collider (LHC). We consider generic spin-2 particle which couples differently to the quarks and the gluons (non-universal scenario). The threshold enhanced analytical coefficient has been obtained up to third order exploiting the universality of the soft function as well as the process dependent form factors at the same order. We performed a detailed phenomenological analysis and give predict…
We show two types of bounds on five- and six-demensional universal extra dimension (UED) models from the latest results of the Higgs search at the LHC and of the electroweak precision data for the S and T parameters. The UED models on which we put lower bounds are the minimal UED model in five dimensions and the six dimensional ones. The highest possible ultraviolet cutoff scale for each UED model is evaluated from the vacuum stability of the Higgs potential by solving the renormalization group equation of the Higgs self coupling. The bounds on the KK scale in the minimal UED model is 650 GeV …
We summarize the theoretical approach to the solution of the NNLO DGLAP equations using methods based on the logarithmic expansions in x-space and their implementation into the C program Candia 1.0. We present the various options implemented in the program and discuss the different solutions. The user can choose the order of the evolution, the type of the solution, which can be either exact or truncated, and the evolution either with a fixed or a varying flavor number, implemented in the varying-flavour-number scheme (VFNS). The renormalization and factorization scale dependences are treated s…
With an eye toward the precision physics of the LHC, such as the recent measurement of $M_W$ by the ATLAS Collaboration, we present here systematic studies relevant to the assessment of the expected size of multiple photon radiative effects in heavy gauge boson production with decay to charged lepton pairs. We use the new version 4.22 of ${\cal KK}$MC-hh so that we have CEEX EW exact ${\cal O}(α^2 L)$ corrections in a hadronic MC and control over the corresponding EW initial-final interference (IFI) effects as well. In this way, we illustrate the interplay between cuts of the type used in the …
Precision measurements at the LHC can provide probes of new physics, and they are complementary to direct searches. The high energy distribution of di-boson processes ($WW,WZ,Vh$) is a promising place, with the possibility of significant improvement in sensitivity as the data accumulates. We focus on the semi-leptonic final states, and make projections of the reach for future runs of the LHC with integrated luminosities of 300 fb$^{-1}$ and 3 ab$^{-1}$. We emphasize the importance of tagging the polarization of the vector bosons, in particular for the $WW$ and $WZ$ channels. We employ a combin…
A NNLO analysis of certain logarithmic expansions, developed for precision studies of the evolution of the QCD parton distributions (pdf) at the Large Hadron Collider, is presented. We elaborate on their relations to all the solutions of the DGLAP equations that have been hitherto obtained from Mellin space, to which are equivalent. Exact expansions, equivalent to exact solutions of the equations, are constructed in the non-singlet sector. The algorithmic features of our approach are also emphasized, since this method allows to obtain numerical solutions of the evolution equations with the sam…
Future high precision electroweak measurements require understanding of Standard Model expectations to multi-loop accuracy, both, for the predictions of production cross-sections of signal and background, as well as for pseudo-observables. I review recent results from precision calculations and summarize projections and implications for the Tevatron, the LHC, CEBAF, and the ILC.
We update the phenomenology of gauge singlet extensions of the Standard Model scalar sector and their implications for the electroweak phase transition. Considering the introduction of one real scalar singlet to the scalar potential, we analyze present constraints on the potential parameters from Higgs coupling measurements at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and electroweak precision observables for the kinematic regime in which no new scalar decay modes arise. We then show how future precision measurements of Higgs boson signal strengths and Higgs self-coupling could probe the scalar potentia…
Assuming that a Higgs sector is responsible for electroweak symmetry breaking, we attempt to address two important questions: How much better precision are various measurements of Higgs boson properties at a future linear collider than at the LHC? What can a future linear collider do for Higgs physics that the LHC cannot?
Little Higgs models - which can most easily be thought of as a variant of composite Higgs models - explain a light Higgs boson at 125 GeV as an pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson of a spontaneously broken global symmetry. The mechanism of collective symmetry breaking shifts the UV scale of these models to the 10 TeV scale and higher. T-parity is introduced as a discrete symmetry to remove tree-level constraints on the electroweak precision data. Still after run 1 of LHC, electroweak precision observables gave stronger constraints than Higgs data and direct searches. We present a full recast of all a…
We consider an extension of the MSSM with an added vectorlike top partner. Our aim is to revisit to what extent such an extension can raise the Higgs boson mass through radiative corrections and help ameliorate the MSSM hierarchy problem, and to specify what experimental probes at the LHC will find or exclude this possibility during the high-luminosity phase. Direct detection, precision electroweak and precision Higgs analyses are all commissioned to this end. To achieve the $ 125 \, \textrm{GeV} \ $ Higgs boson mass, we find that superpartner masses can be reduced by a factor of more than thr…
The prospects for electroweak precision physics at the LHC and the ILC are reviewed. This includes projections for measurements of the effective Z pole weak mixing angle, sin^2 theta_W (eff.), as well as top quark, W boson, and Higgs scalar properties. The upcoming years may also see very precise determinations of sin^2 theta_W (eff.) from lower energies.
We study the potential of future lepton colliders, running at the Z-pole and above, and the High-Luminosity LHC to search for the relaxion and other light scalars $ϕ$. We investigate the interplay of direct searches and precision observables for both CP-even and -odd couplings. In particular, precision measurements of exotic Z-decays, Higgs couplings, the exotic Higgs decay into a relaxion pair and associated $Zϕ$ and $γϕ$ production are promising channels to yield strong bounds.
The installation of forward proton detectors at the LHC will provide the possibility to perform new high-precision measurements, opening a novel window on physics beyond the Standard Model. We review recent simulations and theoretical developments about the measurement of anomalous light-by-light scattering. The search for this process is expected to provide bounds on a wide range of new particles. Future perspectives for precision QED at the LHC are also briefly discussed.
This review describes the current status of precision QCD studies at the LHC. We introduce the main experimental and theoretical methods, discussing also their cross-stimulated developments and recent advances. The different types of QCD observables that are measured at the LHC, including cross-sections, event- and jet-level properties, for various final states, are summarised. Their relation to fundamental QCD dynamics and their impact on Standard Model parameter determinations are discussed on specific examples. The impact of QCD-related observables on direct and indirect searches for rare p…
