Kerr soliton microcombs have recently emerged as a prominent topic in integrated photonics and enabled new horizons for optical frequency metrology. Kerr soliton microcombs, as its name suggests, are based on the high-order cubic optical nonlinearity. It is desirable to exploit quadratic photonic materials, namely Pockels materials, for soliton generation and on-chip implementation of 1f-2f comb self-referencing. Such quadratically-driven solitons have been theoretically proposed, but have not yet been observed in a nanophotonic platform despite of recent progresses in quadratic comb generation in free-space and crystalline resonators. Here we report photonic chip-based Pockels microcomb solitons driven by three-wave mixing in an aluminum nitride microring resonator. In contrast to typical Kerr solitons, our Pockels soliton features unity soliton generation fidelity, two-by-two annihilation of multi-soliton states, favorable tuning dynamics, and high pump-to-soliton conversion efficiency.
Optical frequency combs enable state-of-the-art applications including frequency metrology, optical clocks, astronomical measurements, and sensing. Recent demonstrations of microresonator-based Kerr frequency combs or microcombs pave the way to scalable and stable comb sources on a photonic chip. Generating microcombs in the visible wavelength range, however, has been limited by large material dispersion and optical loss. Here we demonstrate a scheme for efficiently generating visible microcomb in a high Q aluminum nitride microring resonator. Enhanced Pockels effect strongly couples infrared …
We study the conditions for soliton-like wave propagation in the Photorefractive (PR) and electro-optic (i.e., Pockels) material, by using Nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation. The complete NLS equation is solved analytically and numerically by transforming it into the phase space. Our results clearly show the existence of both the dark and bright solitary solutions for the PR medium. Interestingly, however, we find only one bright solitary solution in the Pockels case and there is no evidence of any dark solitary solution.
Soliton microcombs provide a versatile platform for realizing fundamental studies and technological applications. To be utilized as frequency rulers for precision metrology, soliton microcombs must display broadband phase coherence, a parameter characterized by the optical phase or frequency noise of the comb lines and their corresponding optical linewidths. Here, we analyse the optical phase-noise dynamics in soliton microcombs generated in silicon nitride high-Q microresonators and show that, because of the Raman self-frequency shift or dispersive-wave recoil, the Lorentzian linewidth of som…
In this Letter, we investigate the feasibility and performance of wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) optical communications using an integrated dissipative Kerr soliton micro-comb as the multi-channel laser source. First, we confirm that soliton microcomb pumped directly by a DFB laser self-injection locked to the host micro-cavity has sufficiently low frequency and amplitude noises to encode advanced data formats. Second, perfect soliton crystals are exploited to boost the power level of each microcomb line, so that they can be directly used for data modulation excluding pre-amplification.…
The emerging microresonator-based frequency combs revolutionize a broad range of applications from optical communications to astronomical calibration. Despite of their significant merits, low energy efficiency and the lack of all-optical dynamical control severely hinder the transfer of microcomb system to real-world applications. Here, by introducing active lasing medium into the soliton microcomb, for the first time, we experimentally achieve the chiral soliton with agile on-off switch and tunable dual-comb generation in a packaged microresonator. It is found that such a microresonator enabl…
Thermal noise usually dominates the low-frequency region of the optical phase noise of soliton microcombs, leading to decoherence and limiting many aspects of applications. In this work, we demonstrate a simple and reliable way to mitigate this noise by laser cooling with the pump laser. The key is rendering the pump laser to simultaneously excite two neighboring cavity modes from different families that are respectively red and blue detuned, one for soliton generation and the other one for laser cooling.
We explore intrinsic thermal noise in soliton microcombs, revealing thermodynamic correlations induced by nonlinearity and group-velocity dispersion. A suitable dispersion design gives rise to control over thermal-noise transduction from the environment to a soliton microcomb. We present simulations with the Lugiato-Lefever equation (LLE), including temperature as a stochastic variable. By systematically tuning the dispersion, we suppress repetition-rate frequency fluctuations by up to 50 decibels for different LLE soliton solutions. In an experiment, we observe a measurement-system-limited 15…
For its many useful properties, including second and third-order optical nonlinearity as well as electro-optic control, lithium niobate is considered an important potential microcomb material. Here, a soliton microcomb is demonstrated in a monolithic high-Q lithium niobate resonator. Besides the demonstration of soliton mode locking, the photorefractive effect enables mode locking to self-start and soliton switching to occur bi-directionally. Second-harmonic generation of the soliton spectrum is also observed, an essential step for comb self-referencing. The Raman shock time constant of lithiu…
Optical frequency comb, with precisely controlled spectral lines spanning a broad range, has been the key enabling technology for many scientific breakthroughs. In addition to the traditional implementation based on modelocked lasers, photonic frequency microcombs based on dissipative Kerr and quadratic cavity solitons in high-Q microresonators have become invaluable in applications requiring compact footprint, low cost, good energy efficiency, large comb spacing, and access to nonconventional spectral regions. In this review, we comprehensively examine the recent progress of photonic frequenc…
We present an explicit sech-squared-soliton solution associated with the optical Pockels effect, achieved through the generation of the frequency combs via parametric down-conversion in optical microresonators with quadratic nonlinearity. This soliton contrasts the parametric sech-soliton describing the half-harmonic field in the limit of the large index mismatch, and associated with the cascaded-Kerr effect. We predict differences in the spectral profiles and powers of the Pockels and cascaded-Kerr solitons, and report that the pump power threshold of the former agree with the recent experime…
Spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) is a widely used and minimally invaive technique for bio-medical imaging [1]. SD-OCT typically relies on the use of superluminescent diodes (SLD), which provide a low-noise and broadband optical spectrum. Recent advances in photonic chipscale frequency combs [2, 3] based on soliton formation in photonic integrated microresonators provide an chipscale alternative illumination scheme for SD-OCT. Yet to date, the use of such soliton microcombs in OCT has not yet been analyzed. Here we explore the use of soliton microcombs in spectral domain OC…
Multiple applications of relevance in photonics, such as spectrally efficient coherent communications, microwave synthesis or the calibration of astronomical spectrographs, would benefit from soliton microcombs operating at repetition rates <50GHz. However, attaining soliton microcombs with low repetition rates using photonic integration technologies represents a formidable challenge. Expanding the cavity volume results in a drop of intracavity intensity that can only be offset by an encompassing rise in quality factor. In addition, reducing the footprint of the microresonator on a planar inte…
Frequency combs have applications that extend from the ultra-violet into the mid-infrared bands. Microcombs, a miniature and often semiconductor-chip-based device, can potentially access most of these applications, but are currently more limited in spectral reach. Here, we demonstrate mode-locked silica microcombs with emission near the edge of the visible spectrum. By using both geometrical and mode-hybridization dispersion control, devices are engineered for soliton generation while also maintaining optical $Q$ factors as high as 80 million. Electronics-bandwidth-compatible (20 GHz) soliton …
The generation of dissipative Kerr solitons in optical microresonators has provided a route to compact frequency combs of high repetition rate, which have already been employed for optical frequency synthesizers, ultrafast ranging, coherent telecommunication and dual-comb spectroscopy. Silicon nitride (Si$_3$N$_4$) microresonators are promising for photonic integrated soliton microcombs. Yet to date, soliton formation in Si$_3$N$_4$ microresonators at electronically detectable repetition rates, typically less than 100 GHz, is hindered by the requirement of external power amplifiers, due to the…

Coherent laser ranging systems using dual frequency combs provide an unprecedented combination of long range, high precision and fast update rate. Here, dual-comb distance measurement using chip-based soliton microcombs is demonstrated. Moreover, the dual frequency combs are generated within a single microresonator as counter-propating solitons using a single pump laser. Time-of-flight measurement with 2…

Broad bandwidth and stable microresonator frequency combs are critical for accurate and precise optical frequency measurements in a compact and deployable format. Typically, broad bandwidths (e.g., octave spans) are achieved by tailoring the microresonator's geometric dispersion. However, geometric dispersion engineering alone may be insufficient for sustaining bandwidths well beyond an octave. Here, we introduce the novel concept of synthetic dispersion, in which a second pump laser effectively alters the dispersion landscape to create Kerr soliton microcombs that extend far beyond the anomal…
Photonic integrated microcombs have enabled advanced applications in optical communication, microwave synthesis, and optical metrology, which in nature unveil an optical dissipative soliton pattern under cavity-enhanced nonlinear processes. The most decisive factor of microcombs lies in the photonic material platforms, where materials with high nonlinearity and in capacity of high-quality chip integration are highly demanded. In this work, we present a home-developed chalcogenide glasses-Ge25Sb10S65 (GeSbS) for the nonlinear photonic integration and for the dissipative soliton microcomb genera…
Narrow linewidth lasers and optical frequency combs generated with mode-locked lasers revolutionized optical frequency metrology. The advent of soliton Kerr frequency combs in compact crystalline or integrated ring optical microresonators opens new horizons for applications. These combs, as was naturally assumed, however, require narrow-linewidth single-frequency pump lasers. We demonstrate that a regular multi-frequency Fabry-Perot laser diode self-injection locked to an optical whispering gallery mode (WGM) microresonator can be first efficiently transformed to a single-frequency ultra-narro…
We propose and theoretically investigate a dispersion-engineered Si3N4 microring resonator, based on a cross-section containing a partially-etched trench, that supports phase-locked, two-color soliton microcomb states. These soliton states consist of a single circulating intracavity pulse with a modulated envelope that sits on a continuous wave background. Such temporal waveforms produce a frequency comb whose spectrum is spread over two widely-spaced spectral windows, each exhibiting a squared hyperbolic secant envelope, with the two windows phase-locked to each other via Cherenkov radiation.…
We demonstrate that the optical spectrum of a soliton microcomb generated in a microresonator can be coherently extended by using bichromatic pumping: one pump with a frequency in the anomalous dispersion regime of the microresonator is used to generate a bright soliton microcomb while a second pump in the normal dispersion regime both compensates the thermal effect of the microresonator and generates a second frequency comb via cross-phase modulation with the bright soliton, thus extending the spectrum of the microcomb. Experimental results for different microresonators show that the mode spa…
Soliton microcombs -- phase-locked microcavity frequency combs -- have become the foundation of several classical technologies in integrated photonics, including spectroscopy, LiDAR, and optical computing. Despite the predicted multimode entanglement across the comb, experimental study of the quantum optics of the soliton microcomb has been elusive. In this work, we use second-order photon correlations to study the underlying quantum processes of soliton microcombs in an integrated silicon carbide microresonator. We show that a stable temporal lattice of solitons can isolate a multimode below-…
Dissipative Kerr solitons are self-sustaining optical wavepackets in resonators. They use the Kerr nonlinearity to both compensate dispersion and to offset optical loss. Besides providing insights into nonlinear resonator physics, they can be applied in frequency metrology, precision clocks, and spectroscopy. Like other optical solitons, the dissipative Kerr soliton can radiate power in the form of a dispersive wave through a process that is the optical analogue of Cherenkov radiation. Dispersive waves typically consist of an ensemble of optical modes. A limiting case is demonstrated in which …
Acquisition of laser frequency with high resolution under continuous and abrupt tuning conditions is important for sensing, spectroscopy and communications. Here, a single microresonator provides rapid and broad-band measurement of frequencies across the optical C-band with a relative frequency precision comparable to conventional dual frequency comb systems. Dual-locked counter-propagating solitons having slightly different repetition rates are used to implement a Vernier spectrometer. Laser tuning rates as high as 10 THz/s, broadly step-tuned lasers, multi-line laser spectra and also molecul…
The frequency and orbital angular momentum (OAM) are independent physical properties of light that both offer unbounded degrees of freedom. However, creating, processing, and detecting high-dimensional OAM states have been a pivot and long-lasting task, as the complexity of the required optical systems scales up drastically with the OAM dimension. On the other hand, mature toolboxes -- such as optical frequency combs -- have been developed in the frequency domain for parallel measurements with excellent fidelity. Here we correlate the two dimensions into an equidistant comb structure on a phot…
We demonstrate polarization multiplexed dissipative Kerr solitons in an on-chip silicon nitride micro-resonator. In our experiment, TE- and TM-polarized soliton can be individually generated and controlled, thanks to their weak mutual interaction as the result of sufficiently different repetition rates and orthogonal polarization states. Furthermore, we find that TE- and TM-polarized solitons usually exhibit uncorrelated time jitters, therefore the frequency and phase coherence between the polarization multiplexed soliton microcombs change dramatically as a function of pump laser parameters, b…

Photonic chip-based soliton microcombs have shown rapid progress and have already been used in many system-level applications, including coherent communications, astrophysical spectrometer calibration and ultrafast ranging. While there has been substantial progress in realizing soliton microcombs that rely on compact laser diodes, culminating in devices that only utilize a semiconductor amplifier or a self-injection-locked laser as a pump source, accessing and generating single soliton states with electronically detectable line rates from a compact laser module has remained challenging. Here w…
The rapidly maturing integrated Kerr microcombs show significant potential for microwave photonics. Yet, state-of-the-art microcomb based radiofrequency (RF) filters have required programmable pulse shapers, which inevitably increase the system cost, footprint, and complexity. Here, by leveraging the smooth spectral envelope of single solitons, we demonstrate for the first time microcomb based RF filters free from any additional pulse shaping. More importantly, we achieve all-optical reconfiguration of the RF filters by exploiting the intrinsically rich soliton configurations. Specifically, we…
Dissipative Kerr soliton microcomb has been recognized as a promising on-chip multi-wavelength laser source for fiber optical communications, as its comb lines possess frequency and phase stability far beyond independent lasers. In the scenarios of coherent optical transmission and interconnect, a highly beneficial but rarely explored target is to re-generate a Kerr soliton microcomb at the receiver side as local oscillators that conserve the frequency and phase property of the incoming data carriers, so that to enable coherent detection with minimized optical and electrical compensations. We theoretically and experimentally investigate the formation of dissipative coherent structures in Kerr nonlinear optical microresonators, whose integrated dispersion exceeds the free-spectral range. We demonstrate that the presence of any periodic modulation along the resonator's circumference, such as periodically varying dispersion, can excite higher-order comb structures. We explore the outcomes of coherent microcomb generation in both cases of anomalous and normal dispersion. We are able to access this regime in microresonators via the high peak power of synchronous pulse-driving. For so…
