We study a Dirichlet spectral problem for a second-order elliptic operator with locally periodic coefficients in a thin domain. The boundary of the domain is assumed to be locally periodic. When the thickness of the domain $\varepsilon$ tends to zero, the eigenvalues are of order $\varepsilon^{-2}$ and described in terms of the first eigenvalue $μ(x_1)$ of an auxiliary spectral cell problem parametrized by $x_1$, while the eigenfunctions localize with rate $\sqrt{\varepsilon}$.
In this paper, for a family of second-order elliptic equations with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients and rapidly oscillating periodic potentials, we are interested in the $H^1$ convergence rates and the Dirichlet eigenvalues and bounds of the normal derivatives of Dirichlet eigenfunctions. The $H^1$ convergence rates rely on the Dirichlet correctors and the first-order corrector for the oscillating potentials. And the bound results rely on an $O(\varepsilon)$ estimate in $H^1$ for solutions with Dirichlet condition.
We study the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of a spectral problem for the Laplacian in a domain with rapidly oscillating boundary. We consider the case where the eigenvalue of the limit problem is multiple. We construct the leading terms of the asymptotic expansions for the eigenelements and verify the asymptotics.
For a family of elliptic operators with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients, we study the convergence rates for Dirichlet eigenvalues and bounds of the normal derivatives of Dirichlet eigenfunctions. The results rely on an $O(ε)$ estimate in $H^1$ for solutions with Dirichlet condition.
The aim of this paper is to adapt the notion of two-scale convergence in $L^p$ to the case of a measure converging to a singular one. We present a specific case when a thin cylinder with locally periodic rapidly oscillating boundary shrinks to a segment, and the corresponding measure charging the cylinder converges to a one-dimensional Lebegues measure of an interval. The method is then applied to the asymptotic analysis of linear elliptic operators with locally periodic coefficients in a thin cylinder with locally periodic rapidly varying thickness.
In this article we study the homogenization rates of eigenvalues of a Steklov problem with rapidly oscillating periodic weight functions. The results are obtained via a careful study of oscillating functions on the boundary and a precise estimate of the $L^\infty$ bound of eigenfunctions. As an application we provide some estimates on the first nontrivial curve of the Dancer-{F}u{č}{\'ı}k spectrum.
This paper deals with the homogenization of a mixed boundary value problem for the Laplace operator in a domain with locally periodic oscillating boundary. The Neumann condition is prescribed on the oscillating part of the boundary, and the Dirichlet condition on a separate part. It is shown that the homogenization result holds in the sense of weak $L^2$ convergence of the solutions and their flows, under natural hypothesis on the regularity of the domain. The strong $L^2$ convergence of average preserving extensions of the solutions and their flows is also considered.
We consider the homogenization of an elliptic spectral problem with a large potential stated in a thin cylinder with a locally periodic perforation. The size of the perforation gradually varies from point to point. We impose homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions on the boundary of perforation and on the lateral boundary of the cylinder. The presence of a large parameter $1/\varepsilon$ in front of the potential and the dependence of the perforation on the slow variable give rise to the effect of localization of the eigenfunctions. We show that the $j$th eigenfunction can be approximated by a…
For a family of elliptic operators with periodically oscillating coefficients, $-\text{div}( A(\cdot/\varepsilon) \nabla) $ with tiny $\varepsilon>0$, we comprehensively study the first-order expansions of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions (eigenspaces) for both Dirichlet and Neumann problems in bounded, smooth and strictly convex domains (or more general domains of finite type). A new first-order correction term is introduced to derive the expansion of eigenfunctions in $L^2$ or $H^1_{\text{loc}}$. Our results rely on the recent progress on the homogenization of boundary layer problems.
The paper deals with a Dirichlet spectral problem for a singularly perturbed second order elliptic operator with rapidly oscillating locally periodic coefficients. We study the limit behaviour of the first eigenpair (ground state) of this problem. The main tool in deriving the limit (effective) problem is the viscosity solutions technique for Hamilton-Jacobi equations. The effective problem need not have a unique solution. We study the non-uniqueness issue in a particular case of zero potential and construct the higher order term of the ground state asymptotics.
This paper is dedicated to the spectral optimization problem \begin{equation*} \min \big\{ λ_1(Ω)+\cdots+λ_k(Ω) + Λ|Ω| \ : \ Ω\subset D \text{ quasi-open} \big\} \end{equation*} where $D\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ is a bounded open set and $0<λ_1(Ω)\leq\cdots\leqλ_k(Ω)$ are the first $k$ eigenvalues on $Ω$ of an operator in divergence form with Dirichlet boundary condition and Hölder continuous coefficients. We prove that the first $k$ eigenfunctions on an optimal set for this problem are locally Lipschtiz continuous in $D$ and, as a consequence, that the optimal sets are open sets. We also prove the…
In this paper we generalize the periodic unfolding method and the notion of two-scale convergence on surfaces of periodic microstructures to locally periodic situations. The methods that we introduce allow us to consider a wide range of non-periodic microstructures, especially to derive macroscopic equations for problems posed in domains with perforations distributed non-periodically. Using the methods of locally periodic two-scale convergence (l-t-s) on oscillating surfaces and the locally periodic (l-p) boundary unfolding operator, we are able to analyze differential equations defined on bou…
This paper is concerned with the intrinsic geometric structures of conductive transmission eigenfunctions. The geometric properties of interior transmission eigenfunctions were first studied in [9]. It is shown in two scenarios that the interior transmission eigenfunction must be locally vanishing near a corner of the domain with an interior angle less than $π$. We significantly extend and generalize those results in several aspects. First, we consider the conductive transmission eigenfunctions which include the interior transmission eigenfunctions as a special case. The geometric structures e…
We consider the homogenization of a singularly perturbed self-adjoint fourth order elliptic equation with locally periodic coefficients, stated in a bounded domain. We impose Dirichlet boundary conditions on the boundary of the domain. The presence of large parameters in the lower order terms and the dependence of the coefficients on the slow variable give rise to the effect of localization of the eigenfunctions. We show that the $j$th eigenfunction can be approximated by a rescaled function that is constructed in terms of the $j$th eigenfunction of fourth or second order order effective opera…
We consider a singularly perturbed Dirichlet spectral problem for an elliptic operator of second order. The coefficients of the operator are assumed to be locally periodic and oscillating in the scale $\varepsilon$. We describe the leading terms of the asymptotics of the eigenvalues and the eigenfunctions to the problem, as the parameter $\varepsilon$ tends to zero, under structural assumptions on the potential. More precisely, we assume that the local average of the potential has a unique global minimum point in the interior of the domain and its Hessian is non-degenerate at this point.
In this paper a microscopic model for a signalling process in the cardiac muscle tissue of the left ventricular wall, comprising non-periodic fibrous microstructure is considered. To derive the macroscopic equations we approximate the non-periodic microstructure by the corresponding locally-periodic microstructure. Then applying the methods of the locally-periodic (l-p) unfolding operator, locally-periodic two-scale (l-t-s) convergence on oscillating surfaces and l-p boundary unfolding operator we obtain the macroscopic problem for a signalling process in the heart muscle tissue.
We prove analytic-type estimates in weighted Sobolev spaces on the eigenfunctions of a class of elliptic and nonlinear eigenvalue problems with singular potentials, which includes the Hartree-Fock equations. Going beyond classical results on the analyticity of the wavefunctions away from the nuclei, we prove weighted estimates locally at each singular point, with precise control of the derivatives of all orders. Our estimates have far-reaching consequences for the approximation of the eigenfunctions of the problems considered, and they can be used to prove a priori estimates on the numerical s…
Consider the nonlinear and completely continuous scattering map \[ \mathcal{S}\big((Ω; λ, μ, V), \mathbf{u}^i\big)=\mathbf{u}_t^\infty(\hat{\mathbf{x}}), \quad \hat{\mathbf{x}}\in\mathbb{S}^{n-1}, \] which sends an inhomogeneous elastic scatterer $(Ω; λ, μ, V)$ to its far-field pattern $\mathbf{u}_t^\infty$ due to an incident wave field $\mathbf{u}^i$ via the Lamé system. Here, $(λ, μ, V)$ signifies the medium configuration of an elastic scatterer that is compactly supported in $Ω$. In this paper, we are concerned with the intrinsic geometric structure of the kernel space of $\mathcal{S}$, whi…
The focus of this paper is on a thin obstacle problem where the obstacle is defined on the intersection between a hyper-plane $Γ$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and a periodic perforation $\mathcal{T}_\varepsilon$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$, depending on a small parameter $\varepsilon>0$. As $\varepsilon\to 0$, it is crucial to estimate the frequency of intersections and to determine this number locally. This is done using strong tools from uniform distribution. By employing classical estimates for the discrepancy of sequences of type $\{kα\}_{k=1}^\infty$, $α\in\R$, we are able to extract rather precise informatio…
This paper reports some novel and intriguing discoveries about the localization and geometrization phenomenon in plasmon resonances and the intrinsic geometric structures of Neumann-Poincaré eigenfunctions. It is known that plasmon resonance generically occurs in the quasi-static regime where the size of the plasmonic inclusion is sufficiently small compared to the wavelength. In this paper, we show that the global smallness condition on the plasmonic inclusion can be replaced by a local high-curvature condition, and the plasmon resonance occurs locally near the high-curvature point of the pla…
We study the generalized eigenvalue problem in $\mathbb{R}^N$ for a general convex nonlinear elliptic operator which is locally elliptic and positively $1$-homogeneous. Generalizing article of Berestycki and Rossi in [Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 68 (2015), no. 6, 1014-1065] we consider three different notions of generalized eigenvalues and compare them. We also discuss the maximum principles and uniqueness of principal eigenfunctions.
Motivated by an eigenvalue-eigenfunction problem posed in IR^n x Ω, where Ω is a probability space, we are concerned in this paper with the Sobolev space on groups. Hence it is established an equivalence between locally compact Abelian groups and the space of solutions to the associated variational problem. Then, we study some conditions which characterize in a precisely manner the Rellich-Kondrachov Theorem, the principal ingredient to solve the variational problem.
We consider uniformly elliptic operators with Dirichlet or Neumann homogeneous boundary conditions on a domain $Ω$ in ${\mathbb{R}}^N$. We consider deformations $ϕ(Ω)$ of $Ω$ obtained by means of a locally Lipschitz homeomorphism $ϕ$ and we estimate the variation of the eigenfunctions and eigenvalues upon variation of $ϕ$. We prove general stability estimates without using uniform upper bounds for the gradients of the maps $ϕ$. As an application, we obtain estimates on the rate of convergence for eigenvalues and eigenfunctions when a domain with an outward cusp is approximated by a sequence of…
The paper is pertaining to the spectral theory of operators and boundary value problems for differential equations on manifolds. Eigenvalues of such problems are studied as functionals on the space of domains. Resolvent continuity of the corresponding operators is established under domain deformation and estimates of continuity moduli of their eigenvalues $\slash$ eigenfunctions are obtained provided the boundary of nonperturbed domain is locally represented as a graph of some continuous function and domain deformation is measured with respect to the Hausdorff--Pompeiu metric.
We prove an upper bound for the convergence rate of the homogenization limit $ε\to 0$ for a linear transmission problem for a advection-diffusion(-reaction) system posed in areas with low and high diffusivity, where $ε$ is a suitable scale parameter. On this way, we justify the formal homogenization asymptotics obtained by us earlier by proving an upper bound for the convergence rate (a corrector estimate). The main ingredients of the proof of the corrector estimate include integral estimates for rapidly oscillating functions with prescribed average, properties of the macroscopic reconstructio…
The paper deals with the homogenization of a magneto-elastodynamics equation satisfied by the displacement $u\_\varepsilon$ of an elastic body which is subjected to an oscillating magnetic field $B\_\varepsilon$ generating the Lorentz force $\partial\_t u\_\varepsilon\times B\_\varepsilon$.When the magnetic field $B\_\varepsilon$ only depends on time or on space, the oscillations of $B\_\varepsilon$ induce an increase of mass in the homogenized equation. More generally, when the magnetic field is time-space dependent through a uniformly bounded component $G\_\varepsilon(t,x)$ of $B\_\varepsilo…
We consider a homogenization of elliptic spectral problem stated in a perforated domain, Fourier boundary conditions being imposed on the boundary of perforation. The presence of a locally periodic coefficient in the boundary operator gives rise to the effect of a localization of the eigenfunctions. Moreover, the limit behaviour of the lower part of the spectrum can be described in terms of an auxiliary harmonic oscillator operator. We describe the asymptotics of the eigenpairs and derive the estimates for the rate of convergence.
