In this work, dissipative quantum backflow is studied for a superposition of two stretched Gaussian wave packets and two identical spinless particles within the Caldirola-Kanai framework. Backflow is mainly an interference process and dissipation is not able to suppress it in the first case. For two identical spinless particles, apart from interference terms, the symmetry of the wave function seems to be crucial in this dynamics. The combined properties make bosons display this effect, even for the dissipative regime but, for fermions, backflow is not exhibited in any regime, dissipative and nodissipative. The anti-symmetric character of the corresponding wave function seems to be strong enough to prevent it. For bosons, backflow is also analyzed in terms of fidelity of one-particle states which is a well-known property of two quantum states. At very small values of fidelity, this effect is not seen even for bosons.
Dissipative backflow is studied in the context of open quantum systems. This theoretical analysis is carried out within two frameworks, the effective time-dependent Hamiltonian due to Caldirola-Kanai (CK) and the Caldeira-Leggett (CL) one where a master equation is used to describe the reduced density matrix in presence of dissipation and temperature of the environment. Two examples are considered, the free evolution of one and two Gaussian wave packets as well as the time evolution under a constant field. Backflow is shown to be reduced with dissipation and temperature but never suppressed. I…
Quantum backflow is the classically-forbidden effect pertaining to the fact that a particle with a positive momentum may exhibit a negative probability current at some space-time point. We investigate how this peculiar phenomenon extends to many-particle systems. We give a general formulation of quantum backflow for systems formed of $N$ free nonrelativistic structureless particles, either identical or distinguishable. Restricting our attention to bosonic systems where the $N$ identical bosons are in the same one-particle state allows us in particular to analytically show that the maximum achi…
Decoherence is a well established process for the emergence of classical mechanics in open quantum systems. However, it can have two different origins or mechanisms depending on the dynamics one is considering, speaking then about intrinsic decoherence for isolated systems and environmental decoherence due to dissipation/fluctuations for open systems. This second mechanism can not be considered for backflow since no thermal fluctuation terms can be added in the formalism in order to keep an important requirement for the occurrence of this effect: only contributions of positive momenta along ti…
The phase synchronization of a single qubit in a dissipative bath in the absence of driving field is demonstrated. Using the Husimi $Q$-function we show that the phase preference is present in the long time limit only during non-Markovian evolution with a finite detuning. This happens due to the information backflow signifying that non-Markovianity is a resource for quantum synchronization. To quantify synchronization we use the shifted phase distribution as well as its maximal value. From the maximal value of the shifted phase distribution we observe the signatures of quantum synchronization …
The degree of non-Markovianity allows to characterizing quantum evolutions that depart from a Markovian regime in a similar way as Schmidt number measures the degree of entanglement of pure states. Maximally non-Markovian dynamics are the analogous of maximally entangled states [D. Chruściński and S. Maniscalco, Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 120404 (2014)]. Here, we demonstrate that there exists a class of maximally non-Markovian quantum evolutions where the associated environment (degrees of freedom not belonging to the system) obeys a Markovian (memoryless) dynamics, which in turn is unperturbed by …
Any realistic quantum system is inevitably subject to an external environment. This environment makes the open-system dynamics significant for many quantum tech-nologies, such as entangled-state engineering, quantum simulation, and quantum sensing. The information flow of a system to its environment usually induces a Markovian process, while the backflow of information from the environment exhibits non-Markovianity. The practical environment, usually consisting of a large number of degrees of freedom, is hard to control, despite some attempts on controllable transitions from Markovian to non-M…

Detuned systems can spontaneously achieve a synchronous dynamics and display robust quantum correlations in different local and global dissipation regimes. Beyond the Markovian limit, information backflow from the environment becomes a crucial mechanism whose interplay with spontaneous synchronization is unknown. Considering a model of two coupled qubits, one of which interacts with a dissipative environment, we show that non-Markovianity is highly detrimental for the emergence of synchronization, for the latter can be delayed and hindered because of the presence of information backflow. The r…
Interference and diffraction of two-identical-particles are considered in the context of open quantum systems. This theoretical study is carried out within two approaches, the effective time-dependent Hamiltonian due to Caldirola-Kanai (CK) and the Caldeira-Leggett (CL) one where a master equation for the reduced density matrix is used under the presence of dissipation and temperature of the environment. Two simple but very illustrative examples are considered, diffraction by a single and two Gaussian slits by analyzing the mean square separation between particles, single-particle probability …
Generation of squeezed light and optomechanical instability for dissipative type of opto- mechanical coupling is theoretically addressed for a cavity with the input mirror, serving as a mechanical oscillator, or an equivalent system. The problem is treated analytically for the case of resonance excitation or small detunings, mainly focusing on the bad cavity limit. A qualitative difference between the dissipative and purely dispersive coupling is reported. In particular, it is shown that, for the purely dissipative coupling in the bad cavity regime, the backaction is strongly reduced and the s…
To understand the dynamical origin of the measurement in quantum mechanics, several models have been put forward which have a quantum system coupled to an apparatus. The system and the apparatus evolve in time and the Born rule for the system to be in various eigenstates of the observable is naturally obtained. In this work, we show that the effect of the drive-induced dissipation in such a system can lead to the Born rule, even if there is no separate apparatus. The applied drive needs to be much stronger than the system-environment coupling. In this condition, we show that the dynamics of a …
Post-Markovian quantum master equations from classical environment fluctuations
在本文中,我们证明了两个常用的唯象后马尔可夫量子主方程可以推导出没有使用任何微扰近似。一个系统耦合到一个环境的特点是自经典的组态波动,后者服从马尔可夫动力学,定义了底层的物理模型。Shabani-Lidar方程[A. Shabani和D. A. Lidar,Phys. Mazzola,E. M. Laine,H. P. Breuer,S. Maniscalco和J. Piilo,Phys.Rev.A81,062120(2010)],我们还证明了这些主方程,即使具有指数记忆函数,也可能导致非马尔可夫效应,例如如果哈密顿系统不与耗散动力学耦合,则信息的环境到系统回流。
We study quantum dynamics of many-qubit systems strongly coupled to a quantized electromagnetic cavity mode, in the presence of decoherence and dissipation for both fermions and cavity photons. The analytic solutions are derived for a broad class of open quantum systems in Lindblad approximation. They include identical qubits, an ensemble of qubits with a broad distribution of transition frequencies, and multi-level electron systems. Compact analytic solutions for time-dependent quantum state amplitudes and observables become possible with the use of the stochastic equation of evolution for th…
Trapped ions are among the most promising candidates for performing quantum information processing tasks. Recently, it was demonstrated how the properties of geometric phases can be used to implement an entangling two qubit phase gate with significantly reduced operation time while having a built-in resistance against certain types of errors (Palmero et. al., Phys. Rev. A 95, 022328 (2017)). In this article, we investigate the influence of both quantum and thermal fluctuations on the geometric phase in the Markov regime. We show that additional environmentally induced phases as well as a loss …
The hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM) for a generalized quantum dissipative system is rigorously constructed in the frameworks of two different stochastic dynamical descriptions, i.e., the non-Markovian quantum state diffusion approach as well as the stochastic decoupling scheme. We demonstrated that the HEOMs obtained by these two different stochastic dynamical methods are identical. Moreover, we present some numerical examples to verify the feasibility of our formalism.

We derive a Born-Markov master equation describing the dissipation induced by a bath of lossy but coherently driven two-level systems (TLS) coupled to a bosonic system via Jaynes-Cummings interaction. We analytically derive all the master equation rates. We characterize these rates for the particular case of a single-mode system coupled to identical TLS. We study the steady state of the system and its exotic properties stemming from the non-thermal stationary state of the driven TLS bath. These properties include dissipative amplification, bath-induced linear instability, and both coherent and…
We analyze the origin and properties of the chaotic dynamics of two atomic ensembles in a driven-dissipative experimental setup, where they are collectively damped by a bad cavity mode and incoherently pumped by a Raman laser. Starting from the mean-field equations, we explain the emergence of chaos by way of quasiperiodicity -- presence of two or more incommensurate frequencies. This is known as the Ruelle-Takens-Newhouse route to chaos. The equations of motion have a $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$-symmetry with respect to the interchange of the two ensembles. However, some of the attractors of these equat…
