The effects of the cosmological constant on the static equilibrium configurations and stability against small radial perturbations of relativistic polytropic spheres are investigated. This study numerically solves the hydrostatic equilibrium equation and the radial stability equation, both of which are modified from their standard form to introduce the cosmological constant. For the fluid, we consider a pressure $p$ and an energy density $ρ$, which are connected through the equation of state $p=κδ^Γ$ with $δ=ρ-p/(Γ-1)$, where $κ$, $Γ$ and $δ$ represent the polytropic constant, adiabatic index and rest mass density of the fluid, respectively. The dependencies of the mass, radius and eigenfrequency of oscillations on both the cosmological constant and the adiabatic index are analyzed. For ranges of both the central rest mass density $δ_c$ and the adiabatic index $Γ$, we show that the stars have a larger (lower) mass and radius and a diminished (enhanced) stability when the cosmological constant $Λ>0$ ($Λ<0$) is increased (decreased). In addition, in a sequence of compact objects with fixed $Γ$ and $Λ$, the regions constructed by stable and unstable static equilibrium configurations are recognized by the conditions $dM/dδ_c>0$ and $dM/dδ_c<0$, respectively.
We present a simple, analytic and straightforward method to elucidate the effects produced by polytropic fluids on any other gravitational source, no matter its nature, for static and spherically symmetric spacetimes. As a direct application, we study the interaction between polytropes and perfect fluids coexisting inside a self-gravitating stellar object
Two general-relativistic hydrodynamical models are considered: a model of self-gravitating static configurations of perfect fluid and a model of steady accretion of fluid onto a black hole. We generalise analytic results obtained for the original polytropic versions of these models onto a wider class of barotropic equations of state. The knowledge about the polytropic solutions is used to establish bounds on certain characteristic quantities appearing in both cases.
We consider the Einstein-Maxwell system of equations in the context of isotropic coordinates for matter distributions with anisotropy in the presence of an electric field. We assume a polytropic equation of state for the matter configuration. New classes of exact solutions are generated for different polytropic indices. The model is well behaved and we can regain masses of several observed objects, in particular we obtain the mass of the star PSR J1903+327.
We study the static stellar equilibrium configurations ofuncharged and charged spheres composed by a relativistic polytropic fluid, and compare with those of spheres composed by a non-relativistic polytropic fluid, the later case already being studied in a previous work [J. D. Arbañil, P. S. Lemos, V. T. Zanchin, Phys. Rev. D \textbf{88}, 084023 (2013)]. In the relativistic fluid case, a relativistic polytropic equation of state, $p=ωδ^γ$, is assumedd. Here, $δ=ρ-p/(γ-1)$, with $δ$ and $ρ$ being the rest mass density and the energy density, respectively, and $ω$ and $γ$ are respectively the po…
We use two large collections of observational data of supernovae type Ia (SNe Ia) to investigate the polytropic Universe including the situation with a varying cosmological constant; details of our new derivations are presented. We examine the fitness of our new models of a polytropic Universe with two sets of SNe Ia data to test if these are better descriptions than the current standard model of cosmology. Beginning with the established relationships for polytropic matter we derive new equations describing the influence of polytropic matter on the expanding Universe including the situation wi…
We develop a "hybrid approximative scheme" in the framework of the post-Newtonian approximation for computing general-relativistic polytropic models simulating neutron stars in critical rigid rotation. We treat the differential equations governing such a model as a "complex initial value problem", and we solve it by using the so-called "complex-plane strategy". We incorporate into the computations the complete solution for the relativistic effects, this issue representing a significant improvement with regard to the classical post-Newtonian approximation, as verified by extended comparisons of…
In this work we evaluate the physical acceptability of relativistic anisotropic spheres modeled by two polytropic equations of state -- with the same newtonian limit -- commonly used to describe compact objects in General Relativity. We integrate numerically the corresponding Lane-Emden equation in order to get density, mass and pressure profiles. An ansatz is used for the anisotropic pressure allowing us to have material configurations slightly deviated from isotropic condition. Numerical models are classified in a parameter space according to the number of physical acceptability conditions t…
In this work we study steady and spherical relativistic dust accretion onto a static and spherically symmetric scale--dependent black hole. In particular we consider a polytropic scale--dependent black hole as a central object and obtain that the radial velocity profile and the energy density are affected when scale--dependence of the central object is taken into account and such a deviation is controlled by the so called running parameters of the scale--dependence models.
The polytropic gas model is investigated as an interacting dark energy scenario. The cosmological implications of the model including the evolution of EoS parameter $w_Λ$, energy density $Ω_Λ$ and deceleration parameter $q$ are investigated. We show that, depending on the parameter of model, the interacting polytropic gas can behave as a quintessence or phantom dark energy. In this model, the phantom divide is crossed from below to up. The evolution of $q$ in the context of polytropic gas dark energy model represents the decelerated phase at the early time and accelerated phase later. The sing…
We consider the conformal Einstein equations for polytropic perfect fluid cosmologies which admit an isotropic singularity. For the polytropic index gamma strictly greater than 1 and less than or equal to 2 it is shown that the Cauchy problem for these equations is well-posed, that is to say that solutions exist, are unique and depend smoothly on the data, with data consisting of simply the 3-metric of the singularity. The analogous result for gamma=1 (dust) is obtained when Bianchi type symmetry is assumed.
In this paper we compute general-relativistic polytropic models simulating rigidly rotating, pulsating neutron stars. These relativistic compact objects, with a radius of $\sim 10 \, \mathrm{km}$ and mass between $\sim 1.4$ and $3.2$ solar masses, are closely related to pulsars. We emphasize on computing the change in the pulsation eigenfrequencies owing to a rigid rotation, which, in turn, is a decisive issue for studying stability of such objects. In our computations, we keep rotational perturbation terms of up to second order in the angular velocity.
The dynamical instability of relativistic polytropic spheres, embedded in a spacetime with a repulsive cosmological constant, is studied in the framework of general relativity. We apply the methods used in our preceding paper to study the trapping polytropic spheres with $Λ= 0$, namely, the critical point method and the infinitesimal and adiabatic radial perturbations method developed by Chandrasekhar. We compute numerically the critical adiabatic index, as a function of the parameter $σ= p_{\mathrm{c}}/(ρ_{\mathrm{c}} c^2)$, for several values of the cosmological parameter $λ$ giving the rati…
We sketch an algorithm to generate exact anisotropic solutions starting from a barotropic EoS and setting an ansatz on the metric functions. To illustrate the method, we use a generalization of the polytropic equation of state consisting of a combination of a polytrope plus a linear term. Based on this generalization, we develop two models which are not deprived of physical meaning as well as fulfilling the stringent criteria of physical acceptability conditions. We also show that some relativistic anisotropic polytropic models may have singular tangential sound velocity for polytropic indexes…
In this paper, the gravitational field equations for static spherically symmetric perfect fluid models with a polytropic equation of state, $p=kρ^{1+1/n}$, are recast into two complementary 3-dimensional {\it regular} systems of ordinary differential equations on compact state spaces. The systems are analyzed numerically and qualitatively, using the theory of dynamical systems. Certain key solutions are shown to form building blocks which, to a large extent, determine the remaining solution structure. In one formulation, there exists a monotone function that forces the general relativistic sol…
We construct cosmological models based on a complex scalar field with a power-law potential $V=\frac{K}{γ-1}(\frac{m}{\hbar})^{2γ}|φ|^{2γ}$ associated with a polytropic equation of state $P=Kρ^γ$ (the potential associated with an isothermal equation of state $P=ρk_B T/m$ is $V=\frac{m k_B T}{\hbar^2}|φ|^2 [\ln(m^2|φ|^2/ρ_*\hbar^2)-1]$ and the potential associated with a logotropic equation of state $P=A\ln(ρ/ρ_P)$ is $V=-A[\ln(m^2|φ|^2/\hbar^2ρ_P)+1]$). We consider a fast oscillation regime of ``spintessence'' where the equations of the problem can be simplified. We study all possible cases wi…
In the present work we study the scale--dependence of polytropic non-charged black holes in (3+1)-dimensional space--times assuming a cosmological constant. We allow for scale--dependence of the gravitational and cosmological couplings, and we solve the corresponding generalized field equations imposing the null energy condition. Besides, some properties, such as horizon structure and thermodynamics, are discussed in detail.
We use standard polynomial expansion technique to show the existence of a relation between polytropic model and the description of gas spheres at finite temperature. A numerical analysis is made concerning the obtained perturbative parameters. It is shown that there is a correspondence between polytropic and gas sphere thermal models for fermions and bosons. For instance, the polytropic index $n$ displays evident correlation with temperature and chemical potential.
Spherically symmetric relativistic stars with the polytropic equation of state, which possess the local pressure anisotropy, are considered in the context of general relativity. The modified Lane-Emden equations are derived for the special ansatz for the anisotropy parameter $Δ$ in the form of the differential relation between $Δ$ and the metric function $ν$. The analytical solutions of the obtained equations are found for incompressible fluid stars. The dynamical stability of incompressible anisotropic fluid stars against radial oscillations is studied.
In this paper, we have introduced new viable solutions of Einstein-Maxwell field equations by incorporating the features of anisotropic matter distribution in the realm of General theory of Relativity ($GR$). For this procurement, we have employed a Finch-Skea spacetime along with a generalized polytropic equation of state ($EoS$). We have constructed various models of generalized polytropes by assuming the different choices of the polytropic index i.e.,$η=\frac{1}{2}, \frac{2}{3}, 1$ and $2$. The numerous physical characteristics of these considered models have been studied via graphical anal…
We complete the stability study of general relativistic spherically symmetric polytropic perfect fluid spheres, concentrating attention to the newly discovered polytropes containing region of trapped null geodesics. We compare the methods of treating the dynamical stability based on the equation governing infinitesimal radial pulsations of the polytropes and the related Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue equation for the eigenmodes governing the pulsations, to the methods of stability analysis based on the energetic considerations. Both methods are applied to determine the stability of the polytropes …
The equations of state for a characteristic spacetime are studied in the context of the spherically symmetric interior exact and analytical solutions in Horava gravity and Einstein-aether theory in which anisotropic fluids are considered. In particular, for a given anisotropic interior solution, the equations of state relating the density to the radial and tangential pressure are derived, by means of a polynomial best-fit. Moreover, the well-known relativistic polytropic equations of state are used in order to obtain the profile of the thermodynamical quantities inside the stellar object as pr…
In this paper we investigate gravitationally bound, spherically symmetric equilibrium configurations consisting of ordinary (polytropic) matter nonminimally coupled to an external chameleon scalar field. We show that this system has static, regular, asymptotically flat general relativistic solutions. The properties of these spherical configurations, such as total mass, distribution of matter, and size, depend strongly on the surrounding scalar field. The mass is found in terms of the parameter $σ$, which is proportional to the central mass density of the ordinary matter. We perform a stability…
Obtaining exact solutions of the spherically symmetric general relativistic gravitational field equations describing the interior structure of an isotropic fluid sphere is a long standing problem in theoretical and mathematical physics. The usual approach to this problem consists mainly in the numerical investigation of the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff and of the mass continuity equations, which describes the hydrostatic stability of the dense stars. In the present paper we introduce an alternative approach for the study of the relativistic fluid sphere, based on the relativistic mass equation, …
We revisit the problem of radial pulsations of neutron stars by computing four general-relativistic polytropic models, in which "density" and "adiabatic index" are involved with their discrete meanings: (i) "rest-mass density" or (ii) "mass-energy density" regarding the density, and (i) "constant" or (ii) "variable" regarding the adiabatic index. Considering the resulting four discrete combinations, we construct corresponding models and compute for each model the frequencies of the lowest three radial modes. Comparisons with previous results are made. The deviations of respective frequencies o…
We study the polytropic gas scenario as the unification of dark matter and dark energy. We fit the model parameters by using the latest observational data including type Ia supernovae, baryon acoustic oscillation, cosmic microwave background, and Hubble parameter data. At 68.3% and 95.4% confidence levels, we find the best fit values of the model parameters as $\tilde{K}=0.742_{-0.024}^{+0.024}(1σ)_{-0.049}^{+0.048}(2σ)$ and $n=-1.05_{-0.08}^{+0.08}(1σ)_{-0.16}^{+0.15}(2σ)$. Using the best fit values of the model, we obtain the evolutionary behaviors of the equation of state parameters of the …
We study self-gravitating stars in the bootstrapped Newtonian picture for polytropic equations of state. We consider stars that span a wide range of compactness values. Both matter density and pressure are sources of the gravitational potential. Numerical solutions show that the density profiles can be well approximated by Gaussian functions. Later we assume Gaussian density profiles to investigate the interplay between the compactness of the source, the width of the Gaussian density profile and the polytropic index. We also dedicate a section to comparing the pressure and density profiles of …
We solve the equation of the equilibrium of the gravitating body, with a polytropic equation of state of the matter $P=Kρ^γ$, with $γ=1+1/n$, in the frame of the Newtonian gravity, with non-zero cosmological constant $Λ$. We consider the cases with $n=1,\,\,1.5,\,\,3$ and construct series of solutions with a fixed value of $Λ$. For each value of $n$, the non-dimensional equation of the static equilibrium has a family of solutions, instead of the unique solution of the Lane-Emden equation at $Λ=0$. The equilibrium state exists only for central densities $ρ_0$ larger than the critical value $ρ_c…
The Einstein-Maxwell equations with anisotropic pressures and electromagnetic field are studied with a polytropic equation of state. New exact solutions to the field equations are generated in terms of elementary functions. Special cases of the uncharged solutions of Feroze and Siddiqui (Gen Relativ Gravit 43: 1025, 2011) and Maharaj and Mafa Takisa (Gen Relativ Gravit 44: 1419, 2012) are recovered. We also obtain exact solutions for a neutral anisotropic gravitating body for a polytrope from our general treatment. Graphical plots indicate that the energy density, tangential pressure and aniso…
We set up in detail the general formalism to model polytropic general relativistic stars with anisotropic pressure. We shall consider two different possible polytropic equations, all of which yield the same Lane-Emden equation in the Newtonian limit. A heuristic model based on an ansatz to obtain anisotropic matter solutions from known solutions for isotropic matter is adopted to illustrate the effects of the pressure anisotropy on the structure of the star. In this context, the Tolman mass, which is a measure of the active gravitational mass, is invoked to explain some features of the models.…
We investigate spherical, isothermal and polytropic steady accretion models in the presence of the cosmological constant. Exact solutions are found for three classes of isothermal fluids, assuming the test gas approximation. The cosmological constant damps the mass accretion rate and - above certain limit - completely stops the steady accretion onto black holes. A "homoclinic-type" accretion flow of polytropic gas has been discovered in AdS spacetimes in the test-gas limit. These results can have cosmological connotation, through the Einstein--Straus vacuole model of embedding local structures…
This paper explored the physical acceptability conditions for anisotropic matter configurations in General Relativity. The study considered a generalized polytropic equation of state $P=κρ^γ+αρ-β$ for a heuristic anisotropy. We integrated the corresponding Lane-Emden equation for several hundred models and found the parameter-space portion ensuring the configurations' acceptability. Polytrope based on the total energy density are more stable than those with baryonic density, and small positive local anisotropies produce acceptable models. We also found that polytropic configurations where tang…
We determine the k-essence Lagrangian of a relativistic barotropic fluid. The equation of state of the fluid can be specified in different manners depending on whether the pressure is expressed in terms of the energy density (model I), the rest-mass density (model II), or the pseudo rest-mass density for a complex scalar field in the Thomas-Fermi approximation (model III). In the nonrelativistic limit, these three formulations coincide. In the relativistic regime, they lead to different models that we study exhaustively. We provide general results valid for an arbitrary equation of state and s…
We consider both mode calculations and time evolutions of axial r-modes for relativistic uniformly rotating non-barotropic neutron stars, using the slow-rotation formalism, in which rotational corrections are considered up to linear order in the angular velocity Ω. We study various stellar models, such as uniform density models, polytropic models with different polytropic indices n, and some models based on realistic equations of state. For weakly relativistic uniform density models, and polytropes with small values of n, we can recover the growth times predicted from Newtonian theory when sta…
A main question in astrophysics and cosmology has been the severe stability of the astrophysical objects, whether a particular equilibrium configuration is stable. In this article, we study the relativistic self-gravitating, hydrostatic spheres with a polytropic equation of state , considering structures with the polytropic indices and illustrates the results for the relativistic parameters . We determined the critical relativistic parameter at which the mass of the polytrope has a maximum value and represents the first mode of radial instability. For n=1 (0.5)-2.5, stable relativistic polytro…
Dark matter halos modeled by polytropic spheres influenced by the relict cosmological constant and trapping polytropes forming supermassive black holes
In this paper we present a new approach to the inverse problem for relativistic stars using the piecewise polytropic parametrization of the equation of state. The algorithm is a piecewise polytropic meshing and refinement method that reconstructs the neutron star equation of state from experimental data of the mass and the tidal Love parameter. We use an initial mesh of 65536 equations of state in a 4-volume of piecewise polytropic parameters that contains most of the candidate equations of state used today. The refinement process drives us to the reconstruction of the equation of state with a…
The present paper reports a study on the cosmological consequences arising from reconstructing $f(T)$ gravity through new holographic-polytropic dark energy. We assume two approaches, namely a particular form of Hubble parameter $H$ and a solution for $f(T)$. We obtain the deceleration parameter, effective equation of state as well as torsion equation of state parameters from total density and pressure in both cases. It is interesting to mention here that the deceleration and torsion equation of state represent transition from deceleration to acceleration phase. We study the statefinder parame…
The inner structure of a star or a primordial interstellar cloud is a major topic in classical and relativistic physics. The impact that General Relativistic principles have on this structure has been the subject of many research papers. In this paper we consider within the context of General Relativity a prototype model for this problem by assuming that a star consists of polytropic gas. To justify this assumption we observe that stars undergo thermodynamically irreversible processes and emit heat and radiation to their surroundings. Due to the emission of this energy it is worthwhile to cons…
We study the primordial Universe in a cosmological model where inflation is driven by a fluid with a polytropic equation of state $p = αρ+ kρ^{1 + 1/n}$. We calculate the dynamics of the scalar factor and build a Universe with constant density at the origin. We also find the equivalent scalar field that could create such equation of state and calculate the corresponding slow-roll parameters. We calculate the scalar perturbations, the scalar power spectrum and the spectral index.
We consider spherically symmetric accretion onto a small, possibly primordial, black hole residing at the center of a neutron star governed by a cold nuclear equation of state (EOS). We generalize the relativistic Bondi solution for such EOSs, approximated by piecewise polytropes, and thereby obtain analytical expressions for the steady-state matter profiles and accretion rates. We compare these rates with those found by time-dependent, general relativistic hydrodynamical simulations upon relaxation and find excellent agreement. We consider several different candidate EOSs, neutron star masses…
The equations governing general relativistic, spherically symmetric, hydrodynamic accretion of polytropic fluid onto black holes are solved in Schwarzschild metric to investigate some of the transonic properties of the flow. Only stationary solutions are discussed. For such accretion, it has been shown that real physical sonic points may form {\it even for flow with $γ< {4/3}$ or $γ> {5/3}$}. Behaviour of some flow variables in the close vicinity of the event horizon are studied as a function of specific energy and polytropic index of the flow.
We investigate close binary neutron stars in quasiequilibrium states in a general relativistic framework. We assume conformal flatness for the spatial metric and irrotational velocity field for the neutron stars. We adopt the polytropic equation of state. The computation is performed for the polytropic index n(=0.5, 0.66667, 0.8, 1, 1.25), and compactness of neutron stars M/R(=0.03 - 0.3). Results of this paper are as follows. (i) The sequences of the irrotational binary are always terminated at an innermost orbit where a cusp (inner Lagrange point)appears at the inner edges of the stellar sur…
A general formalism recently proposed to study Newtonian polytropes for anisotropic fluids is here extended to the relativistic regime. Thus, it is assumed that a polytropic equation of state is satisfied by, both, the radial and the tangential pressures of the fluid. Doing so the generalized Lane--Emden equations are obtained and solved. Some specific models are obtained, and their physical properties are discussed.
We consider the cosmology of a 3-brane universe, in a five dimensional space time (Bulk). We present some solutions to the five-dimensional Einstein equation, where a perfect fluid is confined to the 3-brane. We investigate the evolution of brane for two models of bulk. We choose ordinary and modified polytropic gas in brane and it is seen that these models have some new features.
In a recent paper we investigated stationary, relativistic Bondi-type accretion in Schwarzschild-(anti-)de Sitter spacetimes. Here we study their stability, using the method developed by Moncrief. The analysis applies to perturbations satisfying the potential flow condition. We prove that global isothermal flows in Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter spacetimes are stable, assuming the test-fluid approximation. Isothermal flows in Schwarzschild-de Sitter geometries and polytropic flows in Schwarzschild-de Sitter and Schwarzschild-anti-de Sitter spacetimes can be stable, under suitable boundary condit…
In this paper we present a new approach to the inverse problem for relativistic stars using quasinormal modes and the piecewise polytropic parametrization of the equation of state. The algorithm is a piecewise polytropic meshing and refinement method that reconstructs the neutron star equation of state from experimental data of the mass and the $wI$-quasinormal modes. We present an algorithm able to numerically calculate axial quasinormal modes of neutron stars in an efficient way. We use an initial mesh of $27440$ equations of state in a $4$-volume of piecewise polytropic parameters that cont…
In this paper we will discuss charged stars with polytropic equation of state, where we will try to derive an equation analogous to the Lane-Emden equation. We will assume that these stars are spherically symmetric, and the electric field have only the radial component. First we will review the field equations for such stars and then we will proceed with the analog of the Lane-Emden equation for a polytropic Newtonian fluid and their relativistic equivalent. These kind of equations are very interesting because they transform all the structure equations of the stars in a group of differential e…
Spherically symmetric relativistic stars with the polytropic equation of state (EoS), which possess the local pressure anisotropy, are considered within the framework of general relativity. The generalized Lane-Emden equations are derived for the arbitrary anisotropy parameter $Δ=p_t-p_r$ ($p_t$ and $p_r$ being the transverse and radial pressure, respectively). They are then applied to some special ansatz for the anisotropy parameter in the form of the differential relation between the anisotropy parameter $Δ$ and the metric function $ν$. The analytical solutions of the obtained equations are …
The Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue equation for eigenmodes of the radial oscillations is determined for spherically symmetric perfect fluid configurations in spacetimes with a nonzero cosmological constant and applied in the cases of configurations with uniform distribution of energy density and polytropic spheres. It is shown that a repulsive cosmological constant rises the critical adiabatic index and decreases the critical radius under which the dynamical instability occurs.
The spherically symmetric steady accretion of polytropic perfect fluids onto a black hole is the simplest flow model that can demonstrate the effects of backreaction. Backreaction keeps intact most of the characteristics of the sonic point. For any such system the mass accretion rate achieves maximal value when the mass of the fluid is 1/3 of the total mass. Fixing the total mass of the system, one observes the existence of two weakly accreting regimes, one overabundant and the other poor in fluid content.
We found type I critical collapses of compact objects modeled by a polytropic equation of state (EOS) with polytropic index $Γ=2$ without the ultra-relativistic assumption. The object is formed in head-on collisions of neutron stars. Further we showed that the critical collapse can occur due to a change of the EOS, without fine tuning of initial data. This opens the possibility that a neutron star like compact object, not just those formed in a collision, may undergo a critical collapse in processes which slowly change the EOS, such as cooling.
