We present an approach to estimate 3D poses of multiple people from multiple camera views. In contrast to the previous efforts which require to establish cross-view correspondence based on noisy and incomplete 2D pose estimations, we present an end-to-end solution which directly operates in the $3$D space, therefore avoids making incorrect decisions in the 2D space. To achieve this goal, the features in all camera views are warped and aggregated in a common 3D space, and fed into Cuboid Proposal Network (CPN) to coarsely localize all people. Then we propose Pose Regression Network (PRN) to estimate a detailed 3D pose for each proposal. The approach is robust to occlusion which occurs frequently in practice. Without bells and whistles, it outperforms the state-of-the-arts on the public datasets. Code will be released at https://github.com/microsoft/multiperson-pose-estimation-pytorch.

While the voxel-based methods have achieved promising results for multi-person 3D pose estimation from multi-cameras, they suffer from heavy computation burdens, especially for large scenes. We present Faster VoxelPose to address the challenge by re-projecting the feature volume to the three two-dimensional coordinate planes and estimating X, Y, Z coordinates from them separately. To that end, we first localize each person by a 3D bounding box by estimating a 2D box and its height based on the volume features projected to the xy-plane and z-axis, respectively. Then for each person, we estimate…

To improve the generalization of 3D human pose estimators, many existing deep learning based models focus on adding different augmentations to training poses. However, data augmentation techniques are limited to the "seen" pose combinations and hard to infer poses with rare "unseen" joint positions. To address this problem, we present CameraPose, a weakly-supervised framework for 3D human pose estimation from a single image, which can not only be applied on 2D-3D pose pairs but also on 2D alone annotations. By adding a camera parameter branch, any in-the-wild 2D annotations can be fed into our…

Human pose estimation from single images is a challenging problem in computer vision that requires large amounts of labeled training data to be solved accurately. Unfortunately, for many human activities (\eg outdoor sports) such training data does not exist and is hard or even impossible to acquire with traditional motion capture systems. We propose a self-supervised approach that learns a single image 3D pose estimator from unlabeled multi-view data. To this end, we exploit multi-view consistency constraints to disentangle the observed 2D pose into the underlying 3D pose and camera rotation.…

Active camera relocalization (ACR) is a new problem in computer vision that significantly reduces the false alarm caused by image distortions due to camera pose misalignment in fine-grained change detection (FGCD). Despite the fruitful achievements that ACR can support, it still remains a challenging problem caused by the unstable results of relative pose estimation, especially for outdoor scenes, where the lighting condition is out of control, i.e., the twice observations may have highly varied illuminations. This paper studies an illumination-invariant active camera relocalization method, it…
Camera traps are a proven tool in biology and specifically biodiversity research. However, camera traps including depth estimation are not widely deployed, despite providing valuable context about the scene and facilitating the automation of previously laborious manual ecological methods. In this study, we propose an automated camera trap-based approach to detect and identify animals using depth estimation. To detect and identify individual animals, we propose a novel method D-Mask R-CNN for the so-called instance segmentation which is a deep learning-based technique to detect and delineate ea…
Egocentric 3D human pose estimation with a single fisheye camera has drawn a significant amount of attention recently. However, existing methods struggle with pose estimation from in-the-wild images, because they can only be trained on synthetic data due to the unavailability of large-scale in-the-wild egocentric datasets. Furthermore, these methods easily fail when the body parts are occluded by or interacting with the surrounding scene. To address the shortage of in-the-wild data, we collect a large-scale in-the-wild egocentric dataset called Egocentric Poses in the Wild (EgoPW). This datase…

Understanding the abundance of a species is the first step towards understanding both its long-term sustainability and the impact that we may be having upon it. Ecologists use camera traps to remotely survey for the presence of specific animal species. Previous studies have shown that deep learning models can be trained to automatically detect and classify animals within camera trap imagery with high levels of confidence. However, the ability to train these models is reliant upon having enough high-quality training data. What happens when the animal is rare or the data sets are non-existent? T…
The highest accuracy object detectors to date are based either on a two-stage approach such as Fast R-CNN or one-stage detectors such as Retina-Net or SSD with deep and complex backbones. In this paper we present TigerNet - simple yet efficient FPN based network architecture for Amur Tiger Detection in the wild. The model has 600k parameters, requires 0.071 GFLOPs per image and can run on the edge devices (smart cameras) in near real time. In addition, we introduce a two-stage semi-supervised learning via pseudo-labelling learning approach to distill the knowledge from the larger networks. For…

Occlusion is probably the biggest challenge for human pose estimation in the wild. Typical solutions often rely on intrusive sensors such as IMUs to detect occluded joints. To make the task truly unconstrained, we present AdaFuse, an adaptive multiview fusion method, which can enhance the features in occluded views by leveraging those in visible views. The core of AdaFuse is to determine the point-point correspondence between two views which we solve effectively by exploring the sparsity of the heatmap representation. We also learn an adaptive fusion weight for each camera view to reflect its …

Recognizing scenes and objects in 3D from a single image is a longstanding goal of computer vision with applications in robotics and AR/VR. For 2D recognition, large datasets and scalable solutions have led to unprecedented advances. In 3D, existing benchmarks are small in size and approaches specialize in few object categories and specific domains, e.g. urban driving scenes. Motivated by the success of 2D recognition, we revisit the task of 3D object detection by introducing a large benchmark, called Omni3D. Omni3D re-purposes and combines existing datasets resulting in 234k images annotated …

We present VoxelTrack for multi-person 3D pose estimation and tracking from a few cameras which are separated by wide baselines. It employs a multi-branch network to jointly estimate 3D poses and re-identification (Re-ID) features for all people in the environment. In contrast to previous efforts which require to establish cross-view correspondence based on noisy 2D pose estimates, it directly estimates and tracks 3D poses from a 3D voxel-based representation constructed from multi-view images. We first discretize the 3D space by regular voxels and compute a feature vector for each voxel by av…
Predicting 3D human pose from images has seen great recent improvements. Novel approaches that can even predict both pose and shape from a single input image have been introduced, often relying on a parametric model of the human body such as SMPL. While qualitative results for such methods are often shown for images captured in-the-wild, a proper benchmark in such conditions is still missing, as it is cumbersome to obtain ground-truth 3D poses elsewhere than in a motion capture room. This paper presents a pipeline to easily produce and validate such a dataset with accurate ground-truth, with w…

Camera traps are used worldwide to monitor wildlife. Despite the increasing availability of Deep Learning (DL) models, the effective usage of this technology to support wildlife monitoring is limited. This is mainly due to the complexity of DL technology and high computing requirements. This paper presents the implementation of the light-weight and state-of-the-art YOLOv5 architecture for automated labeling of camera trap images of mammals in the Bialowieza Forest (BF), Poland. The camera trapping data were organized and harmonized using TRAPPER software, an open source application for managin…
One major challenge for monocular 3D human pose estimation in-the-wild is the acquisition of training data that contains unconstrained images annotated with accurate 3D poses. In this paper, we address this challenge by proposing a weakly-supervised approach that does not require 3D annotations and learns to estimate 3D poses from unlabeled multi-view data, which can be acquired easily in in-the-wild environments. We propose a novel end-to-end learning framework that enables weakly-supervised training using multi-view consistency. Since multi-view consistency is prone to degenerated solutions,…

This paper proposes MCSSL, a self-supervised learning approach for building custom object detection models in multi-camera networks. MCSSL associates bounding boxes between cameras with overlapping fields of view by leveraging epipolar geometry and state-of-the-art tracking and reID algorithms, and prudently generates two sets of pseudo-labels to fine-tune backbone and detection networks respectively in an object detection model. To train effectively on pseudo-labels,a powerful reID-like pretext task with consistency loss is constructed for model customization. Our evaluation shows that compar…

Non intrusive monitoring of animals in the wild is possible using camera trapping framework, which uses cameras triggered by sensors to take a burst of images of animals in their habitat. However camera trapping framework produces a high volume of data (in the order on thousands or millions of images), which must be analyzed by a human expert. In this work, a method for animal species identification in the wild using very deep convolutional neural networks is presented. Multiple versions of the Snapshot Serengeti dataset were used in order to probe the ability of the method to cope with differ…
We propose a method to reconstruct global human trajectories from videos in the wild. Our optimization method decouples the camera and human motion, which allows us to place people in the same world coordinate frame. Most existing methods do not model the camera motion; methods that rely on the background pixels to infer 3D human motion usually require a full scene reconstruction, which is often not possible for in-the-wild videos. However, even when existing SLAM systems cannot recover accurate scene reconstructions, the background pixel motion still provides enough signal to constrain the ca…

Due to the lack of camera parameter information for in-the-wild images, existing 3D human pose and shape (HPS) estimation methods make several simplifying assumptions: weak-perspective projection, large constant focal length, and zero camera rotation. These assumptions often do not hold and we show, quantitatively and qualitatively, that they cause errors in the reconstructed 3D shape and pose. To address this, we introduce SPEC, the first in-the-wild 3D HPS method that estimates the perspective camera from a single image and employs this to reconstruct 3D human bodies more accurately. First, …

During inference, we predict the target color image by designing a color prediction network with efficient Global Context Transformer modules. The latter effectively leverage global information to learn consistent color and tone mappings. We further propose …
Image provenance can represent crucial knowledge in criminal investigation and journalistic fact checking. In the last two decades, numerous algorithms have been proposed for obtaining information on the source camera and distribution history of an image. For a fair ranking of these techniques, it is important to rigorously assess their performance on practically relevant test cases. To this end, a number of datasets have been proposed. However, we argue that there is a gap in existing databases: to our knowledge, there is currently no dataset that simultaneously satisfies two goals, namely a)…
Trail camera imagery has increasingly gained popularity amongst biologists for conservation and ecological research. Minimal human interference required to operate camera traps allows capturing unbiased species activities. Several studies - based on human and wildlife interactions, migratory patterns of various species, risk of extinction in endangered populations - are limited by the lack of rich data and the time-consuming nature of manually annotating trail camera imagery. We introduce a challenging wildlife camera trap classification dataset collected from two different locations in Southw…

Bundle adjustment jointly optimizes camera intrinsics and extrinsics and 3D point triangulation to reconstruct a static scene. The triangulation constraint, however, is invalid for moving points captured in multiple unsynchronized videos and bundle adjustment is not designed to estimate the temporal alignment between cameras. We present a spatiotemporal bundle adjustment framework that jointly optimizes four coupled sub-problems: estimating camera intrinsics and extrinsics, triangulating static 3D points, as well as sub-frame temporal alignment between cameras and computing 3D trajectories of …

Delivering immersive, 3D experiences for human communication requires a method to obtain 360 degree photo-realistic avatars of humans. To make these experiences accessible to all, only commodity hardware, like mobile phone cameras, should be necessary to capture the data needed for avatar creation. For avatars to be rendered realistically from any viewpoint, we require training images and camera poses from all angles. However, we cannot rely on there being trackable features in the foreground or background of all images for use in estimating poses, especially from the side or back of the head.…
The use of gait for person identification has important advantages such as being non-invasive, unobtrusive, not requiring cooperation and being less likely to be obscured compared to other biometrics. Existing methods for gait recognition require cooperative gait scenarios, in which a single person is walking multiple times in a straight line in front of a camera. We aim to address the challenges of real-world scenarios in which camera feeds capture multiple people, who in most cases pass in front of the camera only once. We address privacy concerns by using only motion information of walking …
In contrast to the current literature, we address the problem of estimating the spectrum from a single common trichromatic RGB image obtained under unconstrained settings (e.g. unknown camera parameters, unknown scene radiance, unknown scene contents). We aim to infer 3D shape and pose of object from a single image and propose a learning-based approach that can train from unstructured image collections, supervised by only segmentation outputs from off-the-shelf recognition systems (i.e. 'shelf-supervised'). We first infer a volumetric representation in a canonical frame, along with the camera pose. We enforce the representation geometrically consistent with both appearance and masks, and also that the synthesized novel views are indistinguishable from image collections. The coarse volumetric prediction is then converted to a mesh-based repre…
The hypothesis that image datasets gathered online "in the wild" can produce biased object recognizers, e.g. preferring professional photography or certain viewing angles, is studied. A new "in the lab" data collection infrastructure is proposed consisting of a drone which captures images as it circles around objects. Crucially, the control provided by this setup and the natural camera shake inherent to flight mitigate many biases. It's inexpensive and easily replicable nature may also potentially lead to a scalable data collection effort by the vision community. The procedure's usefulness is …

Without requiring annotations of 3D mesh, 2D keypoints, or camera pose for each video frame, we pose video-based reconstruction as a self-supervised online adaptation problem applied to any incoming test video. We first learn a category-specific 3D reconstruction model from a collection of single-view images of the same category that jointly predicts the shape, texture, and camera pose of an image. Then, at inference time, we adapt the model to a test video ov…

Aerial vehicles are revolutionizing applications that require capturing the 3D structure of dynamic targets in the wild, such as sports, medicine, and entertainment. The core challenges in developing a motion-capture system that operates in outdoors environments are: (1) 3D inference requires multiple simultaneous viewpoints of the target, (2) occlusion caused by obstacles is frequent when tracking moving targets, and (3) the camera and vehicle state estimation is noisy. We present a real-time aerial system for multi-camera control that can reconstruct human motions in natural environments wit…
Camera traps, unmanned observation devices, and deep learning-based image recognition systems have greatly reduced human effort in collecting and analyzing wildlife images. However, data collected via above apparatus exhibits 1) long-tailed and 2) open-ended distribution problems. To tackle the open-set long-tailed recognition problem, we propose the Temporal Flow Mask Attention Network that comprises three key building blocks: 1) an optical flow module, 2) an attention residual module, and 3) a meta-embedding classifier. We extract temporal features of sequential frames using the optical flow…
