The extraction of a scene graph with objects as nodes and mutual relationships as edges is the basis for a deep understanding of image content. Despite recent advances, such as message passing and joint classification, the detection of visual relationships remains a challenging task due to sub-optimal exploration of the mutual interaction among the visual objects. In this work, we propose a novel transformer formulation for scene graph generation and relation prediction. We leverage the encoder-decoder architecture of the transformer for rich feature embedding of nodes and edges. Specifically, we model the node-to-node interaction with the self-attention of the transformer encoder and the edge-to-node interaction with the cross-attention of the transformer decoder. Further, we introduce a novel positional embedding suitable to handle edges in the decoder. Finally, our relation prediction module classifies the directed relation from the learned node and edge embedding. We name this architecture as Relation Transformer Network (RTN). On the Visual Genome and GQA dataset, we have achieved an overall mean of 4.85% and 3.1% point improvement in comparison with state-of-the-art methods. Our experiments show that Relation Transformer can efficiently model context across various datasets with small, medium, and large-scale relation classification.
Previous studies such as VizWiz find that Visual Question Answering (VQA) systems that can read and reason about text in images are useful in application areas such as assisting visually-impaired people. TextVQA is a VQA dataset geared towards this problem, where the questions require answering systems to read and reason about visual objects and text objects in images. One key challenge in TextVQA is the design of a system that effectively reasons not only about visual and text objects individually, but also about the spatial relationships between these objects. This motivates the use of 'edge…

Transformers have shown preferable performance on many vision tasks. However, for the task of person re-identification (ReID), vanilla transformers leave the rich contexts on high-order feature relations under-exploited and deteriorate local feature details, which are insufficient due to the dramatic variations of pedestrians. In this work, we propose an Omni-Relational High-Order Transformer (OH-Former) to model omni-relational features for ReID. First, to strengthen the capacity of visual representation, instead of obtaining the attention matrix based on pairs of queries and isolated keys at…
The simultaneous recognition of multiple objects in one image remains a challenging task, spanning multiple events in the recognition field such as various object scales, inconsistent appearances, and confused inter-class relationships. Recent research efforts mainly resort to the statistic label co-occurrences and linguistic word embedding to enhance the unclear semantics. Different from these researches, in this paper, we propose a novel Transformer-based Dual Relation learning framework, constructing complementary relationships by exploring two aspects of correlation, i.e., structural relat…
Computer vision applications such as visual relationship detection and human object interaction can be formulated as a composite (structured) set detection problem in which both the parts (subject, object, and predicate) and the sum (triplet as a whole) are to be detected in a hierarchical fashion. In this paper, we present a new approach, denoted Part-and-Sum detection Transformer (PST), to perform end-to-end visual composite set detection. Different from existing Transformers in which queries are at a single level, we simultaneously model the joint part and sum hypotheses/interactions with c…
Video Visual Relation Detection (VidVRD), has received significant attention of our community over recent years. In this paper, we apply the state-of-the-art video object tracklet detection pipeline MEGA and deepSORT to generate tracklet proposals. Then we perform VidVRD in a tracklet-based manner without any pre-cutting operations. Specifically, we design a tracklet-based visual Transformer. It contains a temporal-aware decoder which performs feature interactions between the tracklets and learnable predicate query embeddings, and finally predicts the relations. Image captioning is shown to be able to achieve a better performance by using scene graphs to represent the relations of objects in the image. The current captioning encoders generally use a Graph Convolutional Net (GCN) to represent the relation information and merge it with the object region features via concatenation or convolution to get the final input for sentence decoding. However, the GCN-based encoders in the existing methods are less effective for captioning due to two reasons. First, using the image captioning as the objective (i.e., Maximum Likelihood Estimation) rather than a rela…

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are inherently equivariant to translation. Efforts to embed other forms of equivariance have concentrated solely on rotation. We expand the notion of equivariance in CNNs through the Polar Transformer Network (PTN). PTN combines ideas from the Spatial Transformer Network (STN) and canonical coordinate representations. The result is a network invariant to translation and equivariant to both rotation and scale. PTN is trained end-to-end and composed of three distinct stages: a polar origin predictor, the newly introduced polar transformer module and a classif…
Human activity recognition is an emerging and important area in computer vision which seeks to determine the activity an individual or group of individuals are performing. The applications of this field ranges from generating highlight videos in sports, to intelligent surveillance and gesture recognition. Most activity recognition systems rely on a combination of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to perform feature extraction from the data and recurrent neural networks (RNNs) to determine the time dependent nature of the data. This paper proposes and designs two transformer neural networks …

In this thesis, we propose a pioneering work on sparse keypoints tracking across images using transformer networks. In order to address these shortcomings, we propose to study the particular case of real-time and robust keypoints tracking. Specifically, we propose a novel architecture which ensures a fast and rob…

We present recurrent transformer networks (RTNs) for obtaining dense correspondences between semantically similar images. Our networks accomplish this through an iterative process of estimating spatial transformations between the input images and using these transformations to generate aligned convolutional activations. Visual Relationship Detection (VRD) impels a computer vision model to 'see' beyond an individual object instance and 'understand' how different objects in a scene are related. The traditional way of VRD is first to detect objects in an image and then separately predict the relationship between the detected object instances. Such a disjoint approach is prone to predict redundant relationship tags (i.e., predicate) between the same object pair with similar semantic meaning, or incorrect ones that have a similar meaning to the ground truth but are semantically incorrect.
