In this paper we extend the quasitopological electromagnetism, recently introduced by H.-S. Liu et al. [arXiv:1907.10876], to arbitrary dimensions by introducing a fundamental $p$-form field. This allows us to construct new dyonic black hole solutions in odd dimensions, as well as regular $D$-dimensional black holes and solitons. The three-dimensional system consists of a Maxwell field interacting with a scalar field, leading to a deformation of the Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black hole. We present the general formulas defining the black hole solutions in arbitrary dimensions in Lovelock theory and explore the thermal properties of the asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes in the gravitational framework of general relativity. In five dimensions, the latter black holes possess a rich phase space structure in the canonical ensemble, giving rise to as many as five different black hole phases at a fixed temperature, for a given range of the parameters.
Quasitopological electromagnetism has an important influence on the strong gravity of dyonic black hole. For example three photon spheres with one being stable are found and we wish to test them with the observed black hole shadow. We are primarily concerned with the thermodynamics and phase transition for a dyonic anti-de Sitter (AdS) black hole when the quasitopological electromagnetism is included.Unlike in a black hole solution without quasitopological electromagnetism, we observe a triple point phase structure by varying the coupling parameters. Of particular interest, for certain paramet…
In this work, we provide consistent compactifications of Einstein-Maxwell and Einstein-Maxwell-Lovelock theories on direct product spacetimes of the form $\mathcal{M}_D=\mathcal{M}_d\times\mathcal{K}^{p}$, where $\mathcal{K}^p$ is a Euclidean internal manifold of constant curvature. For these compactifications to take place, it is required the distribution of a precise flux of $p$-forms over the internal manifold. The dynamic of the $p$-forms are demanded to be controlled by two types of interaction. First, by specific couplings with the curvature tensor and, second, by a suitable interaction …
In this paper, we formulate two new classes of black hole solutions in higher curvature quartic quasitopological gravity with nonabelian Yang-Mills theory. At first step, we consider the $SO(n)$ and $SO(n-1,1)$ semisimple gauge groups. We obtain the analytic quartic quasitopological Yang-Mills black hole solutions. Real solutions are only accessible for the positive value of the redefined quartic quasitopological gravity coefficient, $μ_{4}$. These solutions have a finite value and an essential singularity at the origin, $r=0$ for space dimension higher than $8$. We also probe the thermodynami…
In this paper we shall elucidate some of the effects of the quartic quasitopological term for Lifshitz-symmetric black holes. The field equations of this theory are difficult to solve exactly; here we will use numerical solutions both to verify previous exact solutions for quartic quasitopological AdS black holes as well as to examine new quasitopological Lifshitz-symmetric black hole solutions, in order to determine the effect of the quartic coupling parameter on the black hole's thermodynamic behavior. We shall find that the quartic parameter controls solutions very similarly to the cubic pa…
We introduce the surface term for quasitopological gravity in order to make the variational principle of the action well-defined. We also introduce the charged black branes of quasitopological gravity and calculate the finite action through the use of counterterm method. Then we compute the thermodynamic quantities of the black brane solution by use of Gibbs free energy and investigate the first law of thermodynamics by introducing a Smarr-type formula. Finally, we generalize our solutions to the case of rotating charged solutions.
Based on the modification to area-law due to thermal fluctuation at small horizon radius, we investigate the thermodynamics of charged quasitopological and charged rotating quasitopological black holes. In particular, we derive the leading-order corrections to the Gibbs free energy, charge and total mass densities. In order to analyse the behavior of the thermal fluctuations on the thermodynamics of small black holes, we draw a comparative analysis between the first-order corrected and original thermodynamical quantities. We also examine the stability and bound points of such black holes under…
As in the case of Einstein or Lovelock gravity, the action of quartic quasitopological gravity has not a well-defined variational principle. In this paper, we first introduce a surface term that makes the variation of quartic quasitopological gravity well defined. Second, we present the static charged solutions of quartic quasitopological gravity in the presence of a non linear electromagnetic field. One of the branch of these solutions presents a black brane with one or two horizons or a naked singularity depending on the charge and mass of the solution. The thermodynamic of these black brane…
We construct quartic quasitopological gravity, a theory of gravity containing terms quartic in the curvature that yields second order differential equations in the spherically symmetric case. Up to a term proportional to the quartic term in Lovelock gravity we find a unique solution for this quartic case, valid in any dimensionality larger than 4 except 8. This case is the highest degree of curvature coupling for which explicit black hole solutions can be constructed, and we obtain and analyze the various black hole solutions that emerge from the field equations in $(n+1)$ dimensions. We discu…
We investigate the thermodynamic behaviour of AdS quasitopological black hole solutions in the context of extended thermodynamic phase space, in which the cosmological constant induces a pressure with a conjugate volume. We find that the third order exact quasitopological solution exhibits features consistent with the third order Lovelock solutions for positive quasitopological coupling, including multiple reentrant phase transitions and isolated critical points. For negative coupling we find the first instances of both reentrant phase transitions and thermodynamic singularities in five dimens…
Based on the fact that some important theories like string and M-theories predict spacetime with higher dimensions, so, in this paper, we aim to construct a theory of quintic quasitopological gravity in higher dimensions ($n\geq5$). This $(n+1)$-dimensional quintic quasitopological gravity can also lead to the most second-order linearized field equations in the spherically symmetric spacetimes. These equations can not be solved exactly and so, we obtain a new class of $(n+1)$-dimensional static solutions with numeric methods. For large values of mass parameter $m$, these solutions yield to bla…
We show that the combination of cubic invariants defining five-dimensional quasitopological gravity, when written in four dimensions, reduce to the version of four-dimensional Einsteinian gravity recently proposed by Arciniega, Edelstein & Jaime, that produces second order equations of motion in a FLRW ansatz, with a purely geometrical inflationary period. We introduce a quartic version of the four-dimensional Einsteinian theory with similar properties, and study its consequences. In particular we found that there exists a region on the space of parameters which allows for thermodynamically st…
We identify a set of higher-derivative extensions of Einstein-Maxwell theory that allow for spherically symmetric charged solutions characterized by a single metric function $f(r)=-g_{tt}=1/g_{rr}$. These theories are a non-minimally coupled version of the recently constructed Generalized Quasitopological gravities and they satisfy a number of properties that we establish. We study magnetically-charged black hole solutions in these new theories and we find that for some of them the equations of motion can be fully integrated, enabling us to obtain analytic solutions. In those cases we show tha…
We explore the chaotic behavior of particle motion in a black hole with quasi-topological electromagnetism. The chaos bound is found to be violated in the higher order expansion of the metric function and the electric potential near the horizon. We draw the Poincare sections of particle motion corresponding to the chaos bound violated and non-violated cases, respectively. Then we study the relationship between the maximal Lyapunov exponent λ_s defined by the static equilibrium and the Lyapunov exponent of the particle geodesic motion near the Reissner-Nordstrom(RN) black hole and the black hol…
We address questions regarding construction and implications of gauge-invariant "dressed" observables in nontrivial background geometries such as that of a black hole. Formally, such observables can be constructed, e.g. by locating points with geodesics launched from infinity. However, practical complications arise in non-trivial geometries, and in particular for observables behind black hole horizons. Greater simplicity can be achieved by considering null constructions where the dressing lies along a null geodesic, or null surface such as a cone. We first investigate basic properties of these…
We investigate the thermodynamics of AdS black holes in Generalized Quasitopological Gravity with and without electric charge, concentrating on the version of the theory that is cubic in curvature. We study new aspects of Hawking-Page transitions that occur for these black holes. Working within the framework of black hole chemistry, we find a variety of familiar and new critical behaviour and phase transitions in four and higher dimensions for the charged black holes. We also consider some holographic aspects of our work, demonstrating how the ratio of viscosity to entropy is modified by inclu…
We introduce the quasi-topological electromagnetism which is defined to be the squared norm of the topological 4-form $F\wedge F$. A salient property is that its energy-momentum tensor is of the isotropic perfect fluid with the pressure being precisely the opposite to its energy density. It can thus provide a model for dark energy. We study its application in both black hole physics and cosmology. The quasi-topological term has no effect on the purely electric or magnetic Reissner-Nordström black holes, the dyonic solution is however completely modified. We find that the dyonic black holes can…
Black hole solutions to the Einstein equations coupled with the Born--Infeld electromagnetism associated with generalized nonlinear electrodynamics, carrying both electric and magnetic charges, often referred to as dyonically charged black holes, of finite energies, are constructed. These solutions give rise to relegated curvature singularities at the center of the matter sources of the black holes and approach the classical Reissner--Nordstrom black hole asymptotically.
We establish various general results concerning static and spherically symmetric black hole solutions of general higher-derivative extensions of Einstein gravity. We prove that the only theories susceptible of admitting solutions with $g_{tt}g_{rr}=-1$ and representing the exterior field of a spherically symmetric distribution of mass are those that only propagate a massless and traceless graviton on the vacuum. Then, we provide a simple (and computationally powerful) sufficient condition for a theory to admit solutions of that kind, as well as a systematic way for constructing them for a give…

We shortly outline the principal results concerning the reparametrization-invariant world-volume Lagrangian formulation of lightlike brane dynamics and its impact as a source for gravity and (nonlinear) electromagnetism in black hole and wormhole physics.
We consider the axially symmetric coupled system of gravitation, electromagnetism and a dilaton field. Reducing from four to three dimensions, the system is described by gravity coupled to a non-linear $σ$-model. We find the target space isometries and use them to generate new solutions. It seems that it is only possible to generate rotating solutions from non-rotating ones for the special cases when the dilaton coupling parameter $a=0, \pm \sqrt{3}$. For those particular values, the target space symmetry is enlarged.
A sum rule for tidal Love number is derived from quantum field theory computations, which relates tidal susceptibility of a spinless body to transition rates of its single graviton emission processes. An analogous sum rule for electromagnetism is given as an example, which is substantiated by comparing to the solved problem of the hydrogen atom. Based on the semiclassical Hawking radiation spectrum, a finite nonvanishing value for quantum corrections to the Love number of Schwarzschild black holes in general relativity is computed using the sum rule, which is known to classically vanish.
Regular black hole solutions are found among the Guilfoyle exact solutions. These are spherically symmetric solutions of general relativity coupled to Maxwell's electromagnetism and charged matter where the metric potentials and electromagnetic fields are related in some particularly simple form. We show that, for certain ranges of the parameters, there are objects which correspond to regular charged black holes, whose interior region is filled by an electrically charged phantom-like fluid, or, in the limiting case, a de Sitter false vacuum fluid, and whose exterior region is Reissner-Nordströ…
Phase diagrams of the boson stars and shells of the $U(1)$ gauged $\mathbb{C}P^N$ nonlinear sigma model are studied. The solutions of the model exhibit both the ball- and the shell-shaped charge density depending on $N$. There appear four independent regions of the solutions which are essentially caused from the coexistence of electromagnetism and gravity. We examine several phase diagrams of the boson stars and the shells and discuss what and how the regions are emerged. A coupling with gravity allows for harboring of the charged black holes for the $Q$-shell solutions. Some solutions are str…
An electrically charged black hole solution with scalar hair in four dimensions is presented. The self-interacting scalar field is real and it is minimally coupled to gravity and electromagnetism. The event horizon is a surface of negative constant curvature and the asymptotic region is locally an AdS spacetime. The asymptotic fall-off of the fields is slower than the standard one. The scalar field is regular everywhere except at the origin, and is supported by the presence of electric charge which is bounded from above by the AdS radius. In turn, the presence of the real scalar field smooths …
Recent work has shown the existence of a unique nonlinear extension of electromagnetism which preserves conformal symmetry and allows for the freedom of duality rotations. Moreover, black holes and gravitational waves have been found to exist in this nonlinearly extended electrovacuum. We generalise these dyonic black holes in two major ways: with the relaxation of their horizon topology and with the inclusion of magnetic mass. Motivated by recent attention to traversable wormholes, we use this new family of Taub-NUT spaces to construct AdS wormholes. We explore some thermodynamic features by …

Quantum corrected effective action for gravity contains massive spin-2 ghost degrees of freedom and admits a topological term which couples longitudinal vector degrees of freedom of the massive spin-2 to Maxwell's electromagnetism. We argue that in the presence of otherwise unobservable gravimagnetic poles this topological term induces an electric charge on a black hole which can be probed through the associated electric and magnetic fields. In particular, we discuss the electromagnetic follow up from the LIGO-sensitive charged black hole binary coalescence due to the synchrotron radiation fro…
We introduce and study in some detail the properties of a novel class of Weyl-conformally invariant p-brane theories which describe intrinsically lightlike branes for any odd world-volume dimension. Their dynamics significantly differs from that of the ordinary (conformally non-invariant) Nambu-Goto p-branes. We present explicit solutions of the Weyl-invariant lightlike brane- (WILL-brane) equations of motion in various gravitational models of physical relevance exhibiting various new phenomena. In D=4 the WILL-membrane serves as a material and charged source for gravity and electromagnetism i…
We describe the full nonlinear development of the superradiant instability for a charged massless scalar field, coupled to general relativity and electromagnetism, in the vicinity of a Reissner-Nordstrom-AdS black hole. The presence of the negative cosmological constant provides a natural context for considering perfectly reflecting boundary conditions and studying the dynamics as the scalar field interacts repeatedly with the black hole. At early times, small superradiant perturbations grow as expected from linearized studies. Backreaction then causes the black hole to lose charge and mass un…
To have the correct picture of a black hole as a whole it is of crucial importance to understand its interior. The singularities that lurk inside the horizon of the usual Kerr-Newman family of black hole solutions signal an endpoint to the physical laws and as such should be substituted in one way or another. A proposal that has been around for sometime, is to replace the singular region of the spacetime by a region containing some form of matter or false vacuum configuration that can also cohabit with the black hole interior. Black holes without singularities are called regular black holes. I…
A black hole image contains a bright ring of photons that have closely circled the black hole on their way from the source to the detector. Here, we study the photon ring of a rotating black hole which is pierced by a global hyper-light axion-type cosmic string. We show that the coupling $ϕF \tilde{F}$ between the axion $ϕ$ and the photon can give rise to a unique polarimetric structure of the photon ring. The structure emerges due to an Aharonov-Bohm type effect that leads to a change of the polarization directions of linear polarized photons when they circle the black hole. For several param…
Recent results on the infrared structure of gravity and electromagnetism have suggested that the deep infrared is much richer than previously appreciated. This article presents a generalisation of these findings within the context of abelian and nonabelian soft (i.e. zero-energy) gauge charges. As a warm up, we describe the emergence of an infinity of soft magnetic charges even in the absence of magnetic monopoles. We show that two infinite sets of soft charges arise in the nonabelian theory as well. In light of the concomitant conservation laws associated with the soft charges, we revisit the…
We study gravitini zero modes in four dimensional $\mathcal{N} = 2$ pure supergravity theory. The gravitini zero modes we study are solutions to the Rarita-Schwinger equations of motion in the background of the purely bosonic Majumdar-Papapetrou background. We start with a very generic ansatz for the gravitini that involves $32$ ansatz functions and reduce the Rarita-Schwinger equations to a set of linear coupled partial differential equations on $\mathbf{R}^3$: the kind familiar from electromagnetism with divergences, curls etc. We first show how the gravitini zero modes due to broken supersy…
We show that primordial (nearly) extremal black holes with a wide range of masses from the Planck scale to around $10^9$ g could be cosmologically stable and explain dark matter, given a dark electromagnetism and a heavy dark electron. For individual black holes, Hawking radiation and Schwinger discharge processes are suppressed by near-extremality and the heaviness of the dark electron, respectively. In contrast, the merger events of binary systems provide an opportunity to directly observe Hawking radiation. Because the merger products are not extremal, they rapidly evaporate and produce tra…
