Mumford's well-known characterization of the hyperelliptic locus of the moduli space of ppavs in terms of vanishing and non-vanishing theta constants is based on Neumann's dynamical system. Poor's approach to the characterization uses the cross ratio. A key tool in both methods is Frobenius' theta formula, which follows from Riemann's theta formula. In a 2004 paper Grushevsky gives a different characterization in terms of cubic equations in second order theta functions. In this note we first show the connection between the methods by proving that Grushevsky's cubic equations are strictly related to Frobenius' theta formula and we then give a new proof of Mumford's characterization via Gunning's multisecant formula.
We give explicit formulas for the Kawazumi-Zhang invariant and Faltings delta-invariant of a compact and connected Riemann surface of genus three. The formulas are in terms of two integrals over the associated jacobian, one integral involving the standard Riemann theta function, and another involving a theta function particular to genus three that was discovered by Frobenius. We review part of Frobenius' work on his theta function and connect our results with a formula due to Bloch, Hain and Bost describing the archimedean height pairing of Ceresa cycles in genus three.
We show that the logarithm $\log_q$ of the Frobenius morphism $x\to x^q$ is given by the formula $x\to x\log x$ (the natural logarithm). In particular, it does not depend on $q$. This is the explicit (although heuristical) formula for the operator conjectured by Hilbert whose eigenvalues coincide with the zeroes of the zeta function.
We give an algebraic method to compute the fourth power of the quotient of any even theta constants associated to a given non-hyperelliptic curve in terms of geometry of the curve. In order to apply the method, we work out non-hyperelliptic curves of genus 4, in particular, such curves lying on a singular quadric, which arise from del Pezzo surfaces of degree 1. Indeed, we obtain a complete 2-level structure of the curves by studying their theta characteristic divisors via exceptional divisors of the del Pezzo surfaces as the structure is required for the method.
The formula of expanding the Abel variety theta function restricted to Abel subvariety into theta functions of this subvariety is obtained. With the help of this formula the solution of differential equations with Jacobi theta functions, restricted on a nonprincipally polarized Abel subvariety and their translations are rewritten in terms of the theta functions of these subvarieties. This is exemplified by the CKP equations, the Bogoyavlenskij system, and the Toda $g_2^{(1)}$-chain.
Effective reconstruction formulas of a curve from its theta hyperplanes are known classically in genus 2 (where the theta hyperplanes are Weierstrass points), and 3 (where, for a generic curve, the theta hyperplanes are bitangents to a plane quartic). However, for higher genera, no formula or algorithm are known. In this paper we give an explicit (and simple) algorithm for computing a generic genus 4 curve from it's theta hyperplanes.
For a proper (not necessarily smooth) variety over a finite field with q elements, Berthelot-Bloch-Esnault proved a trace formula which computes the number of rational points modulo q in terms of the Witt vector cohomology. We show the analogous formula for Witt vector cohomology of finite length. In addition, we prove a vanishing result for the compactly supported étale cohomology of a constant p-torsion sheaf on an affine Cohen-Macaulay variety in positive characteristic p.
We use the theory of p-curvature of connections to analyze stable vector bundles of rank 2 on curves of genus 2 which pull back to unstable bundles under the Frobenius morphism. We take two approaches, first using explicit formulas for p-curvature to analyze low-characteristic cases, and then using degeneration techniques to obtain an answer for a general curve by degenerating to an irreducible rational nodal curve, and applying the results of math.AG/0409145 and math.AG/0407445. We also apply our explicit formulas to give a new description of the strata of curves of genus 2 of different p-ran…
We use Young's raising operators to introduce and study double theta polynomials, which specialize to both the theta polynomials of Buch, Kresch, and Tamvakis, and to double (or factorial) Schur S-polynomials and Q-polynomials. These double theta polynomials give Giambelli formulas which represent the equivariant Schubert classes in the torus-equivariant cohomology ring of symplectic Grassmannians, and we employ them to obtain a new presentation of this ring in terms of intrinsic generators and relations.
For a finite group $G$, Frobenius found a formula for the values of the function $\sum_{\mathrm{Irr} G} (\dim\, π)^{-s}$ for even integers $s$, where $\mathrm{Irr} G$ is the set of irreducible representations of $G$. We generalize this formula to the relative case: for a subgroup $H$, we find a formula for the values of the function $\sum_{\mathrm{Irr} G} (\dim\, π)^{-s} (\dim\, π^H)^{-t}$. We apply our results to compute the E-polynomials of Fock--Goncharov spaces and to relate the Gelfand property to the geometry of generalized Fock--Goncharov spaces.
As a noncommutative generalization of the addition formula of theta functions, we construct a class of theta functions which are closed with respect to the Moyal star product of a fixed noncommutative parameter. These theta functions can be regarded as bases of the space of holomorphic homomorphisms between holomorphic line bundles over noncommutative complex tori.
The paper develops the result of second Thomae theorem in hyperelliptic case. The main formula, called general Thomae formula, provides expressions for values at zero of the lowest non-vanishing derivatives of theta functions with singular characteristics of arbitrary multiplicity in terms of branch points and period matrix. We call these values derivative theta constants. First and second Thomae formulas follow as particular cases. Some further results are derived. Matrices of second derivative theta constants (Hessian matrices of zero-values of theta functions with characteristics of multipl…
We prove a formula, which, given a principally polarized abelian variety $(A,λ)$ over the field of algebraic numbers, relates the stable Faltings height of $A$ with the Néron--Tate height of a symmetric theta divisor on $A$. Our formula completes earlier results due to Bost, Hindry, Autissier and Wagener. The local non-archimedean terms in our formula can be expressed as the tropical moments of the tropicalizations of $(A,λ)$.
We give a general formula relating self cup products in cohomology to connecting maps in nonabelian cohomology, and apply it to obtain a formula for the self cup product associated to the Weil pairing.
Vector-valued Siegel modular forms are the natural generalization of the classical elliptic modular forms as seen by studying the cohomology of the universal abelian variety. We show that for g>=4, a new class of vector-valued modular forms, defined on the Teichmuller space, naturally appears from the Mumford forms, a question directly related to the Schottky problem. In this framework we show that the discriminant of the quadric associated to the complex curves of genus 4 is proportional to the square root of the products of Thetanullwerte χ_{68}, which is a proof of the recently rediscovered…
A stream of new theta relations is obtained. They follow from the general Thomae formula, which is a new result giving expressions for theta derivatives (the zero values of the lowest non-vanishing derivatives of theta functions with singular half-period characteristics) in terms of branch points and the period matrix of a hyperelliptic Riemann surface. The new theta relations contain (i) linear relations on the vector space of first order theta derivatives which are arranged in gradients, (ii) relations between second order theta derivatives and symmetric bilinear forms on the vector space of…
We give an exposition of Dwork's construction of Frobenius structures associated to generalized hypergeometric equations via the interpretation of the latter due to Gelfand-Kapranov-Zelevinsky in the language of A-hypergeometric systems. As a consequence, we extract some explicit formulas for the degeneration at 0 in terms of the Morita p-adic gamma function.
We give a geometric proof of a formula, due to Segal and Wilson, which describes the order of vanishing of the Riemann theta function in the direction which corresponds to the direction of the tangent space of a Riemann surface at a marked point. While this formula appears in the work of Segal and Wilson as a by-product of some non-trivial constructions from the theory of integrable systems (loop groups, infinite-dimensional Grassmannians, tau functions, Schur polynomials, ...) our proof only uses the classical theory of linear systems on Riemann surfaces.
