We overview some recent results in the field of uncertainty quantification for kinetic equations and related problems with random inputs. Uncertainties may be due to various reasons, such as lack of knowledge on the microscopic interaction details or incomplete information at the boundaries or on the initial data. These uncertainties contribute to the curse of dimensionality and the development of efficient numerical methods is a challenge. After a brief introduction on the main numerical techniques for uncertainty quantification in partial differential equations, we focus our survey on some of the recent progress on multi-fidelity methods and stochastic Galerkin methods for kinetic equations.
We consider traffic flow models at different scales of observation. Starting from the well known hierarchy between microscopic, kinetic and macroscopic scales, we will investigate the propagation of uncertainties through the models using the stochastic Galerkin approach. Connections between the scales will be presented in the stochastic scenario and numerical simulations will be performed.
Uncertainty quantification based on stochastic spectral methods suffers from the curse of dimensionality. This issue was mitigated recently by low-rank tensor methods. However, there exist two fundamental challenges in low-rank tensor-based uncertainty quantification: how to automatically determine the tensor rank and how to pick the simulation samples. This paper proposes a novel tensor regression method to address these two challenges. Our method uses an $\ell_{q}/ \ell_{2}$-norm regularization to determine the tensor rank and an estimated Voronoi diagram to pick informative samples for simu…
In this paper, we review modified Cahn-Hilliard equation for image inpainting and explore the effect when the initial condition is uncertain. We study the statistical properties of the solution when the noise is present. The generalized polynomial chaos and the perturbation expansion are used to analyze the equation. Experimental results are attached for comparison of solution behavior.
We develop a weakly intrusive framework to simulate the propagation of uncertainty in solutions of generic hyperbolic partial differential equation systems on graph-connected domains with nodal coupling and boundary conditions. The method is based on the Stochastic Finite Volume (SFV) approach, and can be applied for uncertainty quantification (UQ) of the dynamical state of fluid flow over actuated transport networks. The numerical scheme has specific advantages for modeling intertemporal uncertainty in time-varying boundary parameters, which cannot be characterized by strict upper and lower (…
The quantification of multivariate uncertainties in partial differential equations can easily exceed any computing capacity unless proper measures are taken to reduce the complexity of the model. In this work, we propose a multidimensional Galerkin Proper Orthogonal Decomposition that optimally reduces each dimension of a tensorized product space. We provide the analytical framework and results that define and quantify the low-dimensional approximation. We illustrate its application for uncertainty modeling with Polynomial Chaos Expansions and show its efficiency in a numerical example.
In this note we consider spectral cut-off estimators to solve a statistical linear inverse problem under arbitrary white noise. The truncation level is determined with a recently introduced adaptive method based on the classical discrepancy principle. We provide probabilistic oracle inequalities together with quantification of uncertainty for general linear problems. Moreover, we compare the new method to existing ones, namely early stopping sequential discrepancy principle and the balancing principle, both theoretically and numerically.
We consider kinetic vehicular traffic flow models of BGK type. Considering different spatial and temporal scales, those models allow to derive a hierarchy of traffic models including a hydrodynamic description. In this paper, the kinetic BGK-model is extended by introducing a parametric stochastic variable to describe possible uncertainty in traffic. The interplay of uncertainty with the given model hierarchy is studied in detail. Theoretical results on consistent formulations of the stochastic differential equations on the hydrodynamic level are given. The effect of the possibly negative diff…
In this manuscript we propose and analyze weighted reduced order methods for stochastic Stokes and Navier-Stokes problems depending on random input data (such as forcing terms, physical or geometrical coefficients, boundary conditions). We will compare weighted methods such as weighted greedy and weighted POD with non-weighted ones in case of stochastic parameters. In addition we will analyze different sampling and weighting choices to overcome the curse of dimensionality with high dimensional parameter spaces.
In this paper, we study a physics-informed algorithm for Wasserstein Generative Adversarial Networks (WGANs) for uncertainty quantification in solutions of partial differential equations. By using groupsort activation functions in adversarial network discriminators, network generators are utilized to learn the uncertainty in solutions of partial differential equations observed from the initial/boundary data. Under mild assumptions, we show that the generalization error of the computed generator converges to the approximation error of the network with high probability, when the number of sample…
The standard electrocardiogram (ECG) is a point-wise evaluation of the body potential at certain given locations. These locations are subject to uncertainty and may vary from patient to patient or even for a single patient. In this work, we estimate the uncertainty in the ECG induced by uncertain electrode positions when the ECG is derived from the forward bidomain model. In order to avoid the high computational cost associated to the solution of the bidomain model in the entire torso, we propose a low-rank approach to solve the uncertainty quantification (UQ) problem. More precisely, we explo…
We propose a numerical method for discovering unknown parameterized dynamical systems by using observational data of the state variables. Our method is built upon and extends the recent work of discovering unknown dynamical systems, in particular those using deep neural network (DNN). We propose a DNN structure, largely based upon the residual network (ResNet), to not only learn the unknown form of the governing equation but also take into account the random effect embedded in the system, which is generated by the random parameters. Once the DNN model is successfully constructed, it is able to…
We propose an efficient surrogate modeling technique for uncertainty quantification. The method is based on a well-known dimension-adaptive collocation scheme. We improve the scheme by enhancing sparse polynomial surrogates with conformal maps and adjoint error correction. The methodology is applied to Maxwell's source problem with random input data. This setting comprises many applications of current interest from computational nanoplasmonics, such as grating couplers or optical waveguides. Using a non-trivial benchmark model we show the benefits and drawbacks of using enhanced surrogate mode…
