In this manuscript we propose and analyze weighted reduced order methods for stochastic Stokes and Navier-Stokes problems depending on random input data (such as forcing terms, physical or geometrical coefficients, boundary conditions). We will compare weighted methods such as weighted greedy and weighted POD with non-weighted ones in case of stochastic parameters. In addition we will analyze different sampling and weighting choices to overcome the curse of dimensionality with high dimensional parameter spaces.
Performing uncertainty quantification (UQ) and sensitivity analysis (SA) is vital when developing a patient-specific physiological model because it can quantify model output uncertainty and estimate the effect of each of the model's input parameters on the mathematical model. By providing this information, UQ and SA act as diagnostic tools to evaluate model fidelity and compare model characteristics with expert knowledge and real world observation. Computational efficiency is an important part of UQ and SA methods and thus optimization is an active area of research. In this work, we investigat…
Efficient uncertainty quantification algorithms are key to understand the propagation of uncertainty -- from uncertain input parameters to uncertain output quantities -- in high resolution mathematical models of brain physiology. Advanced Monte Carlo methods such as quasi Monte Carlo (QMC) and multilevel Monte Carlo (MLMC) have the potential to dramatically improve upon standard Monte Carlo (MC) methods, but their applicability and performance in biomedical applications is underexplored. In this paper, we design and apply QMC and MLMC methods to quantify uncertainty in a convection-diffusion m…
In this work, we implement goal-oriented error control and spatial mesh adaptivity for stationary fluid-structure interaction. The a posteriori error estimator is realized using the dual-weighted residual method in which the adjoint equation arises. The fluid-structure interaction problem is formulated within a variational-monolithic framework using arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian coordinates. The overall problem is nonlinear and solved with Newton's method. We specifically consider the FSI-1 benchmark problem in which quantities of interest include the elastic beam displacements, drag, and lift…
We study the Stokes problem over convex polyhedral domains on weighted Sobolev spaces. The weight is assumed to belong to the Muckenhoupt class $A_q$ for $q \in (1,\infty)$. We show that the Stokes problem is well-posed for all $q$. In addition, we show that the finite element Stokes projection is stable on weighted spaces. With the aid of these tools, we provide well-posedness and approximation results to some classes of non-Newtonian fluids.
Due to the computational complexity of micro-swimmer models with fully resolved hydrodynamics, parameter estimation has been prohibitively expensive. Here, we describe a Bayesian uncertainty quantification framework that is highly parallelizable, making parameter estimation for complex forward models tractable. Using noisy in-silico data for swimmers, we demonstrate the methodology's robustness in estimating the fluid and elastic swimmer parameters. Our proposed methodology allows for analysis of real data and demonstrates potential for parameter estimation for various types of micro-swimmers.…
We develop a weakly intrusive framework to simulate the propagation of uncertainty in solutions of generic hyperbolic partial differential equation systems on graph-connected domains with nodal coupling and boundary conditions. The method is based on the Stochastic Finite Volume (SFV) approach, and can be applied for uncertainty quantification (UQ) of the dynamical state of fluid flow over actuated transport networks. The numerical scheme has specific advantages for modeling intertemporal uncertainty in time-varying boundary parameters, which cannot be characterized by strict upper and lower (…
This paper presents a comparison of two multi-fidelity methods for the forward uncertainty quantification of a naval engineering problem. Specifically, we consider the problem of quantifying the uncertainty of the hydrodynamic resistance of a roll-on/roll-off passengers ferry advancing in calm water and subject to two operational uncertainties (ship speed and payload). The first four statistical moments (mean, variance, skewness, kurtosis), and the probability density function for such quantity of interest (QoI) are computed with two multi-fidelity methods, i.e., the Multi-Index Stochastic Col…
We consider parameter estimation of ordinary differential equation (ODE) models from noisy observations. For this problem, one conventional approach is to fit numerical solutions (e.g., Euler, Runge--Kutta) of ODEs to data. However, such a method does not account for the discretization error in numerical solutions and has limited estimation accuracy. In this study, we develop an estimation method that quantifies the discretization error based on data. The key idea is to model the discretization error as random variables and estimate their variance simultaneously with the ODE parameter. The pro…
A variety of methods is available to quantify uncertainties arising with\-in the modeling of flow and transport in carbon dioxide storage, but there is a lack of thorough comparisons. Usually, raw data from such storage sites can hardly be described by theoretical statistical distributions since only very limited data is available. Hence, exact information on distribution shapes for all uncertain parameters is very rare in realistic applications. We discuss and compare four different methods tested for data-driven uncertainty quantification based on a benchmark scenario of carbon dioxide stora…
