Higher-order theories of gravity have received much attention from several areas including quantum gravity, string theory and cosmology. This paper proposes a higher-order gravity whose action includes all curvature scalar terms up to the second-order corrections of general relativity, namely, $R^{2}$, $R^{3}$ and $R\square R$. Then, we explore spherically symmetric and static solutions in the weak-field regime and black holes context. All solutions in the weak-field regime due to a point mass are deduced, and by making a stability analysis of these solutions, we restrict them to Yukawa-type solutions. In regard to black hole solutions, we use the Lichnerovicz method to investigate the possibility of existence of non-Schwarzschild black holes. The results obtained show that non-Schwarzschild solutions might exist. However, for reasonable values of the parameters of the theory, its horizon radii are extremely small making macroscopic black holes different from Schwarzschild unfeasible.
We investigate the quasinormal modes of a class of static and spherically symmetric black holes with the derivative coupling. The derivative coupling has rarely been paid attention to the study of black hole quasinormal modes. Specifically, we study the effect of derivative coupling on the quasinormal modes for four kinds of black holes. They are Reissner-Nordstrom black holes, Bardeen black holes, noncommunicative geometry inspired black holes and dilaton black holes. These black holes are not the solutions of vacuum Einstein equations which guarantees the effect of derivative coupling is not…
We consider the interesting "near-horizon test" reported in (PRD84, 084006(2011), arXiv:1107.5727) for any static, spherically symmetric (SSS) black hole solution admitted in f(R) gravity. Before adopting the necessary conditions for the test, however, revisions are needed as we point out in this Comment.
We apply the Dirac-Bergmann algorithm for the analysis of constraints to gauge theories defined on spherically symmetric black hole backgrounds. We find that the constraints for a given theory are modified on such spacetimes through the presence of additional contributions from the horizon. As a concrete example, we consider the Maxwell field on a black hole background, and determine the role of the horizon contributions on the dynamics of the theory.

A non-diagonal spherically symmetric tetrad field, involving four unknown functions of radial coordinate $r$, is applied to the equations of motion of f(T) gravity theory. A special exact vacuum solution with one constant of integration is obtained. The scalar torsion related to this special solution vanishes. To understand the physical meaning of the constant of integration we calculate the energy associated with this solution and show how it is related to the gravitational mass of the system.
In this paper, we will consider a subclass of models of Horndeski theories of gravity and we will check for several Static Spherically Symmetric solutions. We will find a model which admits an exact black hole solution and we will study its thermodynamics by using the Euclidean Action. We will see that, in analogy with the case of General Relativity, the integration constant of the solution can be identified with the mass of the black hole itself. Other solutions will be discussed, by posing a special attention on the possibility of reproducing the observed profiles of the rotation curves of g…
We propose a new parametric framework to describe in generic metric theories of gravity the spacetime of spherically symmetric and slowly rotating black holes. In contrast to similar approaches proposed so far, we do not use a Taylor expansion in powers of M/r, where M and r are the mass of the black hole and a generic radial coordinate, respectively. Rather, we use a continued-fraction expansion in terms of a compactified radial coordinate. This choice leads to superior convergence properties and allows us to approximate a number of known metric theories with a much smaller set of coefficient…
A tetrad field with spherical symmetry is applied to the charged field equations of $f(T)$ gravity theory. A special spherically-symmetric charged-dS solution is obtained. The scalar torsion of this solution is a vanishing quantity. The spacetime of the derived solution is rewritten as a multiplication of three matrices: The first matrix is a special case of Euler$'$s angle "so(3)", the second matrix represents a boost transformation, while the third matrix is the square root of the spherically-symmetric charged-dS metric. It is shown that the boost matrix is important because it plays an esse…
We consider static spherically symmetric stellar configurations in Palatini theories of gravity in which the Lagrangian is an unspecified function of the form f(R,R_{μν}R^{μν}). We obtain the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkov equations corresponding to this class of theories and show that they recover those of f(R) theories and General Relativity in the appropriate limits. We compute exterior vacuum solutions and comment on the possible expected modifications, as compared to GR, of the interior solutions.
We classify all the six derivative Lagrangians of gravity, whose traced field equations are of second or third order, in arbitrary dimensions. In the former case, the Lagrangian in dimensions greater than six, reduces to an arbitrary linear combination of the six dimensional Euler density and the two linearly independent cubic Weyl invariants. In five dimensions, besides the independent cubic Weyl invariant, we obtain an interesting cubic combination, whose field equations for static spherically symmetric spacetimes are of second order. In the later case, in arbitrary dimensions we obtain two …
We studied spherically symmetric solutions in scalar-torsion gravity theories in which a scalar field is coupled to torsion with a derivative coupling. We obtained the general field equations from which we extracted a decoupled master equation, the solution of which leads to the specification of all other unknown functions. We first obtained an exact solution which represents a new wormhole-like solution dressed with a regular scalar field. Then, we found large distance linearized spherically symmetric solutions in which the space asymptotically is AdS.
We find a crucial miscalculation in [arXiv:1501.00365 [gr-qc]] which leads to the wrong master equation. This follows that there is no wormhole-like solution for hyperbolic scalar potential and the solution at large distances differs from that of [arXiv:1501.00365 [gr-qc]].
Recently a {\it local} true (completely gauge fixed) Hamiltonian for spherically symmetric collapse was derived in terms of Ashtekar variables. We show that such a local Hamiltonian follows directly from the geometrodynamics of gravity theories that obey a Birkhoff theorem and possess a mass function that is constant on the constraint surface in vacuum. In addition to clarifying the geometrical content, our approach has the advantage that it can be directly applied to a large class of spherically symmetric and 2D gravity theories, including $p$-th order Lovelock gravity in D dimensions. The re…
We study some features of static and spherically symmetric solutions (SSS) with a horizon in $f(R)$ theories of gravitation by means of a near-horizon analysis. A necessary condition for an $f(R)$ theory to have this type of solution is obtained. General features of the effective potential are deduced, and it is shown that there exists a limit on the curvature at the horizon, in both cases for any $f(R$). Finally, we calculate the expression for the energy of the collision of two masive particles in the center of mass frame.
We have found some new exact static spherically symmetric interior solutions of metric $f(R)$ gravitational theories describing the equilibrium configuration of a star. Then the solution is matched to the exterior solution and thus gives a complete description of a star in $R^{1-n/2}$ theory.
In this work we study a more restricted class of quasi-topological gravity theories where the higher curvature terms have no contribution to the equation of motion on general static spherically symmetric metric where $g_{tt} g_{rr} \ne \mathrm{constant}$. We construct such theories up to quintic order in Riemann tensor and observe an important property of these theories: the higher order term in the Lagrangian vanishes identically when evaluated on the most general non-stationary spherically symmetric metric ansatz. This not only signals the higher terms could only have non-trivial effects whe…
We study spherically symmetric perturbations determined by alternative theories of gravity to the gravitational field of a central mass in General Relativity. In particular, we focus on perturbations in the form of power laws and calculate their effect on the secular variations of the orbital elements of a Keplerian orbit. We show that, to lowest approximation order, only the argument of pericentre and mean anomaly undergo secular variations; furthermore, we calculate the variation of the orbital period. We give analytic expressions for these variations which can be used to constrain the impac…
We present new second derivative, generally covariant theories of gravity for spherically symmetric spacetimes (general covariance is in the $t-r$ plane) belonging to the class where the spherically symmetric Einstein-Hilbert theory is modified by the presence of $g_{θθ}$ dependent functions. In $3+1$ dimensional vacuum spacetimes there is three-fold infinity of freedom in constructing such theories as revealed by the presence of three arbitrary $g_{θθ}$ dependent functions in the Hamiltonian (matter Hamiltonian also has the corresponding freedom). This result is not a contradiction to the the…
We present the ghost-free infinite-derivative extensions of the Spherically-Reduced Gravity (SRG) and Callan-Giddings-Harvey-Strominger (CGHS) theories in two space-time dimensions. For the case of SRG, we specify the Schwarzschild-type gauge and diagonalise the quadratic action for field perturbations after taking the background fields to be those of the flat-space solution with a linear dilaton. Using the obtained diagonalisation, we construct ghost-free infinite-derivative modifications of the SRG theory. In the context of this modified SRG theory we derive a non-local modification of the l…
In this paper, we investigate Einstein's gravity induced from higher-derivative scalar field theories. We develop an approach utilizing an effective theory of multiple fields for the higher-derivative theory. The expressions for induced cosmological constant and the induced gravitational constant are obtained in the present scenario of induced gravity in D dimensions. We also show that finite values for the induced constants can be extracted in certain infinite-derivative theories.
We discuss possible instabilities in higher-derivative matter fields theories. These theories has two free parameters $β_1$ and $β_4$. By using dynamical system approach we explicitly demonstrate that for stability of Minkowski space in expanding Universe it is need condition $β_4<0$. By using quantum field theory approach we also find additional restriction for parameters $β_1>-\frac{1}{3}β_4$ which is need to avoid tachyon-like instability.
Canonical quantum theories with discrete space may imply interesting effects. This article presents a general effective description, paying due attention to the role of higher spatial derivatives in a local expansion and differences to higher time derivatives. In a concrete set of models, it is shown that spatial derivatives one order higher than the classical one are strongly restricted in spherically symmetric effective loop quantum gravity. Moreover, radial holonomy corrections cannot be anomaly-free to this order.
In this paper we wish to find the corresponding Gibbons-Hawking-York term for the most general quadratic in curvature gravity by using Coframe slicing within the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) decomposition of spacetime in four dimensions. In order to make sure that the higher derivative gravity is ghost and tachyon free at a perturbative level, one requires infinite covariant derivatives, which yields a generalised covariant infinite derivative theory of gravity. We will be exploring the boundary term for such a covariant infinite derivative theory of gravity.
Extensions of Einstein gravity with quadratic curvature terms in the action arise in most effective theories of quantised gravity, including string theory. This article explores the set of static, spherically symmetric and asymptotically flat solutions of this class of theories. An important element in the analysis is the careful treatment of a Lichnerowicz-type `no-hair' theorem. From a Frobenius analysis of the asymptotic small-radius behaviour, the solution space is found to split into three asymptotic families, one of which contains the classic Schwarzschild solution. These three families …
Static spherically symmetric black holes and particle like solutions with self interacting minimally coupled scalar field ϕ are analyzed. They are asymptotically flat or anti-de Sitter (AdS). We express them in terms of a single function ρ which undergoes simple conditions. If ϕ is nontrivial the ADM mass M has to be positive. No-hair theorems are generalized to the AdS asymptotic. For both asymptotics the Killing horizon is nondegenerate and its radius cannot be bigger than 2M. Derivatives of ρ at singularity determine properties of admissible potentials V(ϕ) as regularity, boundedness and be…
We develop a new covariant formalism to treat spherically symmetric spacetimes in metric} f(R) theories of gravity. Using this formalism we derive the general equations for a static and spherically symmetric metric in a general f(R)-gravity. These equations are used to determine the conditions for which the Schwarzschild metric is the only vacuum solution with vanishing Ricci scalar. We also show that our general framework provides a clear way of showing that the Schwarzschild solution is not a unique static spherically symmetric solution, providing some incite on how the current form of Birkh…
We numerically examine the exterior solution of spherically symmetric and static configuration in scalar-tensor theories by using the nonminimally coupled scalar field with zero potential as our sample model. Our main purpose in this work is to fit the resulting data of the numerical solutions in the interested region by seeking for approximate analytical expressions which are weakly dependent of the parameters of a model, such as the nonminimal coupling constant in the present case. To this end, we determine the main forms of the mass and the metric functions in terms of the scalar field and …
We discuss the relation between canonical and metric energy-momentum tensors for field theories with actions that can depend on the higher derivatives of tensor fields in a flat spacetime. In order to obtain it we use a modification of the Noether's procedure for curved space-time. For considered case the difference between these two tensors turns out to have more general form than for theories with no more than first order derivatives. Despite this fact we prove that the difference between corresponding integrals of motion still has the form of integral over 2-dimensional surface that is infi…
We study spherically symmetric solutions in a four-parameter Einstein-Cartan-type class of theories. These theories include torsion, as well as the metric, as dynamical fields, and contain only two physical excitations (around flat spacetime): a massless spin-2 excitation and a massive spin-2 one (of mass $ m_2 \equiv κ$). They offer a geometric framework (which we propose to call "torsion bigravity") for a modification of Einstein's theory that has the same spectrum as bimetric gravity models. We find that the spherically symmetric solutions of torsion bigravity theories exhibit several remar…
We study the quasi-normal modes (QNMs) of static, spherically symmetric black holes in $f(R)$ theories. We show how these modes in theories with non-trivial $f(R)$ are fundamentally different from those in General Relativity. In the special case of $f(R) = αR^2$ theories, it has been recently argued that iso-spectrality between scalar and vector modes breaks down. Here, we show that such a break down is quite general across all $f(R)$ theories, as long as they satisfy $f''(0)/(1+f''(0)) \neq 0$, where a prime denotes derivative of the function with respect to its argument. We specifically disc…
We study late-time behaviors of massive scalar fields in general static and spherically symmetric extremal black hole spacetimes in arbitrary dimensions. We show the existence of conserved quantities on the extremal black hole horizons for specific mass squared and multipole modes of the scalar fields. Those quantities on the horizon are called the Aretakis constants and are constructed from the higher-order derivatives of the fields. Focusing on the region near the horizon at late times, where is well approximated by the near-horizon geometry, we show that the leading behaviors of the fields …
Recently, motivated by certain loop quantum gravity inspired corrections, it was shown that for spherically symmetric midisuperspace models infinitely many second derivative theories of gravity exist (as revealed by the presence of three arbitrary functions in the corresponding Lagrangian/Hamiltonian) and not just those allowed by spherically symmetric general relativity. This freedom can be interpreted as the freedom to accommodate certain quantum gravity corrections in these models even in the absence of higher curvature terms (at a semi-classical level, at least). For a particular choice of…
Static, spherically symmetric solutions representing stars made of barotropic perfect fluid are studied in the context of two theories of type-II minimally modified gravity, VCDM and VCCDM. Both of these theories share the property that no additional degree of freedom is introduced in the gravity sector, and propagate only two gravitational waves besides matter fields, as in General Relativity (GR). We find that, on imposing physical boundary conditions on the Misner-Sharp mass of the system, the solutions in V(C)CDM exactly coincide with the ones in GR, namely they also satisfy the Tolman-Opp…
We consider a massive scalar field living on the recently found exact quantum space-time corresponding to vacuum spherically symmetric loop quantum gravity. The discreteness of the quantum space time naturally regularizes the scalar field, eliminating divergences. However, the resulting finite theory depends on the details of the micro physics. We argue that such dependence can be eliminated through a finite renormalization and discuss its nature. This is an example of how quantum field theories on quantum space times deal with the issues of divergences in quantum field theories.
Recently, a class of theories of massive gravity has been shown to be ghost-free. We study the spherically symmetric solutions in the bigravity formulation of such theories. In general, the solutions admit both a Lorentz invariant and a Lorentz breaking asymptotically flat behaviour and also fall in two branches. In the first branch, all solutions can be found analitycally and are Schwarzschild-like, with no modification as is found for other classes of theories. In the second branch, exact solutions are hard to find, and relying on perturbation theory, Yukawa-like modifications of the static …
We consider a generic scalar-tensor theory involving a shift-symmetric scalar field and minimally coupled matter fields. We prove that the Noether current associated with shift-symmetry vanishes in regular, spherically symmetric and static spacetimes. We use this fact to prove the absence of scalar hair for spherically symmetric and static stars in Horndeski and beyond theories. We carefully detail the validity of this no-hair theorem.
We investigate the existence of black hole and soliton solutions to four dimensional, anti-de Sitter (adS), Einstein-Yang-Mills theories with general semisimple connected and simply connected gauge groups, concentrating on the so-called "regular" case. We here generalise results for the asymptotically flat case, and compare our system with similar results from the well-researched adS $\mathfrak{su}(N)$ system. We find the analysis differs from the asymptotically flat case in some important ways: the biggest difference is that for $Λ<0$, solutions are much less constrained as $r\rightarrow\inft…
