We consider the nonadiabatic energy fluctuations of a many-body system in a time-dependent harmonic trap. In the presence of scale-invariance, the dynamics becomes self-similar and the nondiabatic energy fluctuations can be found in terms of the initial expectation values of the second moments of the Hamiltonian, square position, and squeezing operators. Nonadiabatic features are expressed in terms of the scaling factor governing the size of the atomic cloud, which can be extracted from time-of-flight images. We apply this exact relation to a number of examples: the single-particle harmonic oscillator, the one-dimensional Calogero-Sutherland model, describing bosons with inverse-square interactions that includes the non-interacting Bose gas and the Tonks-Girdardeau gas as limiting cases, and the unitary Fermi gas. We illustrate these results for various expansion protocols involving sudden quenches of the trap frequency, linear ramps and shortcuts to adiabaticity. Our results pave the way to the experimental study of nonadiabatic energy fluctuations in driven quantum fluids.

Quantum computation with quantum gates induced by geometric phases is regarded as a promising strategy in fault tolerant quantum computation, due to its robustness against operational noises. However, because of the parametric restriction of previous schemes, the main robust advantage of holonomic quantum gates is smeared. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a solution scheme, demonstrating nonadiabatic holonomic single qubit quantum gates with optimal control in a trapped Yb ion based on three level systems with resonant drives, which also hold the advantages of fast evolution and convenient …
We develop a general approach for calculating the characteristic function of the work distribution of quantum many-body systems in a time-varying potential, whose many-body wave function can be cast in the Slater determinant form. Our results are applicable to a wide range of systems including an ideal gas of spinless fermions in one dimension (1D), the Tonks-Girardeau (TG) gas of hard-core bosons, as well as a 1D gas of hard-core anyons. In order to illustrate the utility of our approach, we focus on the TG gas confined to an arbitrary time-dependent trapping potential. In particular, we use …
Nonadiabatic geometric quantum computation (NGQC) and nonadiabatic holonomic quantum computation (NHQC) have been proposed to reduce the run time of geometric quantum gates. However, in terms of robustness against experimental control errors, the existing NGQC and NHQC scenarios have no advantage over standard dynamical gates in most cases. Here, we give the reasons why nonadiabatic geometric gates are sensitive to the control errors and, further, we propose a scheme of super-robust nonadiabatic geometric quantum control, in which the super-robust condition can guarantee both high speed and ro…
Quantum gates induced by geometric phases are intrinsically robust against noise due to their global properties of the evolution paths. Compared to conventional nonadiabatic geometric quantum computation (NGQC), the recently proposed nonadiabatic noncyclic geometric quantum computation (NNGQC) works in a faster fashion, while still remaining the robust feature of the geometric operations. Here, we experimentally implement the NNGQC in a single trapped ultracold $^{40}$Ca$^{+}$ ion for verifying the noise-resilient and fast feature. By performing unitary operations under imperfect conditions, w…
We put forth a hitherto unexplored control strategy that enables finite-speed, high-fidelity transport of a quantum wavepacket through a low-temperature dissipative medium. The control consists in confining the wavepacket within a shallow anharmonic trap (tweezer), whose nonuniform velocity is steered so as to maximize the transfer fidelity between two locations. A relevant scenario is a quantum impurity moving through an ultracold gas. Unlike shortcuts to adiabaticity, our approach can simultaneously cope with wavepacket leakage via non-adiabatic and phonon-mediated processes, provided both a…
We derive the probability distribution of the efficiency of a quantum Otto engine. We explicitly compute the quantum efficiency statistics for an analytically solvable two-level engine. We analyze the occurrence of values of the stochastic efficiency above unity, in particular at infinity, in the nonadiabatic regime and further determine mean and variance in the case of adiabatic driving. We finally investigate the classical-to-quantum transition as the temperature is lowered.

Our goal is to provide a new approach to the construction of geometry-induced entanglement between a pair of $Λ$ type atoms in a system consists of $N$ identical atoms by means of nonadiabatic quantum holonomies. By employing the quantum Zeno effect, we introduce a tripod type interaction Hamiltonian between two selected atoms trapped in an optical cavity, which allows arbitrary geometric entangling power. This would be a substantial step toward resolving the feasibility of realizing universal nonadiabatic holonomic entangling two-qubit gates.
In this chapter, we illustrate how a trapped ion system can be used for the experimental study of quantum thermodynamics, in particular, quantum fluctuation of work. As technology of nano/micro scale develops, it becomes critical to understand thermodynamics at the quantum mechanical level. The trapped ion system is a representative physical platform to experimentally demonstrate quantum phenomena with excellent control and precision. We provide a basic introduction of the trapped ion system and present the theoretical framework for the experimental study of quantum thermodynamics. Then we bri…
We study zero-temperature quantum fluctuations in harmonically trapped one-dimensional interacting Bose gases, using the self-consistent multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree method. We define $phase$ $fluctuations$ from the full single-particle density matrix by the spatial decay exponent of off-diagonal long-range order. In a regime of mesoscopic particle numbers and moderate contact couplings, we derive the spatial dependence of the amplitude of phase fluctuations, determined from the {\em self-consistently} derived shape of the field operator orbitals and Fock space orbital occupatio…
We study phase-dependent fluctuations of the resonance fluorescence of a single $Λ$-type three-level atom in the regime near coherent population trapping, i.e., alongside the two-photon detuning condition. To this end, we employ the method of conditional homodyne detection (CHD) which considers squeezing in the weak driving regime, and extends to non-Gaussian fluctuations for saturating and strong fields. In this framework, and using estimated parameter settings of the resonance fluorescence of a single trapped $^{138} \mathrm{Ba}^{+}$ ion, the light scattered from the probe transitions is fou…

How a closed interacting quantum many-body system relaxes and dephases as a function of time is a fundamental question in thermodynamic and statistical physics. In this work, we analyse and observe the persistent temporal fluctuations after a quantum quench of a tunable long-range interacting transverse-field Ising Hamiltonian realized with a trapped-ion quantum simulator. We measure the temporal fluctuations in the average magnetization of a finite-size system of spin-$1/2$ particles. We experiment in a regime where the properties of the system are closely related to the integrable Hamiltonia…
The dynamics of the quantum Rabi model in the deep strong coupling regime is theoretically analyzed in a trapped-ion setup. Recognizably, the main hallmark of this regime is the emergence of collapses and revivals, whose faithful observation is hindered under realistic magnetic dephasing noise. Here we discuss how to attain a faithful implementation of the quantum Rabi model in the deep strong coupling regime which is robust against magnetic field fluctuations and at the same time provides a large tunability of the simulated parameters. This is achieved by combining standing wave laser configu…
The creation of matter and structure in our universe is currently described by an intricate interplay of quantum field theory and general relativity. Signatures of this process during an early inflationary period can be observed, while direct tests remain out of reach. Here, we study an experimental analog of the process based on trapped atomic ions. We create pairs of phonons by tearing apart quantum vacuum fluctuations. Thereby, we prepare ions in an entangled state of motion. Controlling timescales and the coupling to environments should permit optimizing efficiencies while keeping the effe…
Two-dimensional crystals of ions stored in Penning traps are a leading platform for quantum simulation and sensing experiments. For small amplitudes, the out-of-plane motion of such crystals can be described by a discrete set of normal modes called the drumhead modes, which can be used to implement a range of quantum information protocols. However, experimental observations of crystals with Doppler-cooled and even near-ground-state-cooled drumhead modes reveal an unresolved drumhead mode spectrum. In this work, we establish in-plane thermal fluctuations in ion positions as a major contributor …
