The event rates for WIMP-nucleus and neutrino-nucleus scattering processes, expected to be detected in ton-scale rare-event detectors, are investigated. We focus on nuclear isotopes that correspond to the target nuclei of current and future experiments looking for WIMP- and neutrino-nucleus events. The nuclear structure calculations, performed in the context of the deformed shell model, are based on Hartree-Fock intrinsic states with angular momentum projection and band mixing for both the elastic and the inelastic channels. Our predictions in the high-recoil-energy tail show that detectable distortions of the measured/expected signal may be interpreted through the inclusion of the non-negligible incoherent channels
We review recent developments in the study of deep inelastic scattering from light nuclei, focusing in particular on deuterium, helium, and lithium. Understanding the nuclear effects in these systems is essential for the extraction of information on the neutron structure function.
We introduce a generalised relaxation-time-approximation form of the collision term in the Boltzmann kinetic equation that allows for using different relaxation times for elastic and inelastic collisions. The efficacy of the proposed framework is demonstrated with the numerical calculations that describe systems with different relations between the two relaxation times and the evolution time of the system.
The nuclear enhancement observed in inelastic photoproduction of $J/Ψ$ should not be interpreted as evidence for an increased gluon density in nuclei. The nuclear suppression of the production rate due to initial and final state interactions is calculated and a novel two-step color exchange process is proposed, which is able to explain the data.
A covariant formulation of spin-dependent deep-inelastic scattering from nuclei is presented. In the relativistic impulse approximation the inclusive nuclear cross section is described in terms of the amplitude for forward, virtual-photon scattering from an off-mass-shell nucleon. The general structure of the off-shell nucleon hadronic tensor is derived, and the leading behavior of the off-shell nucleon structure functions computed in the Bjorken limit. The formalism, which is valid for nucleons bound inside nuclei with spin 1/2 or 1, is applied to the case of the deuteron.
The Bloom-Gilman local duality of the inelastic structure function of the proton, the deuteron and light complex nuclei is investigated using available experimental data in the squared four-momentum transfer range from 0.3 to 5 (GeV/c)**2. The results of our analysis suggest that the onset of the Bloom-Gilman local duality is anticipated in complex nuclei with respect to the case of the protonand the deuteron. A possible interpretation of this result in terms of a rescaling effect is discussed with particular emphasis to the possibility of reproducing the damping of the nucleon-resonance trans…
We have made a thorough investigation of the nuclear structure function W_2A in the region of 0.8 < x < 1.5 and Q^2 < 20 GeV^2, separating the quasielastic and inelastic plus deep inelastic contributions. The agreement with present experimental data is good giving support to the results for both channels. Predictions are made in yet unexplored regions of x and Q^2 to assert the weight of the quasielastic or inelastic channels. We find that at Q^2 < 4 GeV^2 the structure function is dominated by the quasielastic contributions for x < 1.5, while for values of Q^2 > 15 GeV^2 and the range of x st…
The structure functions calculated in the Chiral bag model reproduce quite well, after appropriate perturbative evolution to large energy scales, the experimental data. We use these results to interpret the structure of the $EMC$ data as a quenching of the pion decay constant due to the in medium behavior of the nucleon. This explanation supports recent proposals of this phenomenon whose origin is the scale invariance of the $QCD$ lagrangian.
We investigate hadron formation in deep inelastic lepton scattering on N, Kr and Xe nuclei in the kinematic regime of the HERMES experiment. The elementary electron-nucleon interaction is described within the event generator PYTHIA while a full coupled-channel treatment of the final state interactions is included by means of a BUU transport model. We find a good agreement with the measured charged hadron multiplicity ratio $R_M^h$ for N and Kr targets by accounting for the deceleration and absorption of the primarily produced particles as well as for the creation of secondary hadrons in the fi…
A light front treatment of the nuclear wave function is developed and applied, using the mean field approximation, to infinite nuclear matter. The nuclear mesons are shown to carry about a third of the nuclear plus momentum; but their momentum distribution has support only at for vanishingly small values of the plus momentum, so the mesons do not contribute to nuclear deep inelastic scattering. This zero mode effect occurs because the meson fields are independent of space-time position.
We present calculations of deuteron elastic and inelastic breakup cross sections and angular distributions at deuteron energies below 100 MeV obtained using the post-form DWBA approximation. The elastic breakup cross section was extensively studied in the past. Very few calculations of inelastic breakup have been performed, however. We also analyze the angular momentum - energy distributions of the cross section for formation of the compound nucleus after inelastic breakup.
A light-front treatment for the scalar and vector meson momentum distribution functions is developed using a model in which the nucleus is treated a static source of radius $R$. The limit $R\to \infty$ corresponds to infinite nuclear matter. In this limit, the scalar mesons are shown to carry a vanishing momentum fraction of the nuclear plus momentum $k^+$, but the vector mesons carry a significant fraction, all occuring at the experimentally inaccessible value of $k^+=0$. This confirms earlier work. A study of the $R$ dependence for sizes of real nuclei shows that a fraction of the scalar and…
We propose simple Monte Carlo method for calculating parton distribution in nuclei. The EMC effect is automatically included by means of two parameters, which characterize the change of nuclear pion field. Good agreement with experimental data in the broad range of variable x is obtained.
It is shown that in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (DIS) of electrons off a complex nucleus A, the detection, in coincidence with the scattered electron, of a nucleus (A-1) in the ground state, as well as of a nucleon and a nucleus (A-2), also in the ground state, may provide unique information on several long standing problems, such as : i) the nature and the relevance of the final state interaction in DIS; ii) validity of the spectator mechanism in DIS; iii) the medium induced modifications of the nucleon structure function; iv) the origin of the EMC effect.
Multiple scattering leads to transverse momentum broadening of the struck quark in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scatterings (SIDIS). Nuclear broadening of the transverse momentum squared at the leading twist is determined by the twist-four collinear quark-gluon correlation function of the target nucleus that is in turn related to the jet transport parameter inside the nuclear medium. The twist-six contributions to the transverse momentum broadening are calculated as power corrections $\sim 1/Q^2$. Such power corrections are found to have no extra nuclear enhancement beyond the twist-four ma…
We present a comprehensive analysis of deep inelastic scattering from He-3 and H-3, focusing in particular on the extraction of the free neutron structure function, F_2^n. Nuclear corrections are shown to cancel to within 1-2% for the isospin-weighted ratio of He-3 to H-3 structure functions, which leads to more than an order of magnitude improvement in the current uncertainty on the neutron to proton ratio F_2^n/F_2^p at large x. Theoretical uncertainties originating from the nuclear wave function, including possible non-nucleonic components, are evaluated. Measurement of the He-3 and H-3 str…
The effects of the final state interaction (FSI) in semi inclusive deep inelastic electron scattering processes $A(e,e'p)X$ off nuclei are investigated in details. Proton production is described within the spectator and the target fragmentation mechanisms whose relevance to the experimental study of the deep inelastic structure functions of bound nucleons and the non perturbative hadronization process is analyzed. Particular attention is paid to the deuteron target within kinematical conditions corresponding to the available and forthcoming experimental data at Jlab. We argue that there are ki…
Using kinetic theory, we analyze the interplay of elastic and inelastic collisions in the thermalization of the quark-gluon plasma. The main focus is the dynamics and equilibration of long wavelength modes.
Possibilities to extract information on the strange form factors of the nucleon from neutrino (antineutrino) inelastic scattering on nuclei, in an energy range from 200 MeV to 1 GeV and more, are investigated in detail. All calculations are performed within two relativistic independent particle models (Fermi gas and shell model); the final state interactions of the ejected nucleon are taken into account through relativistic optical model potentials. We have shown that the values of the cross sections significantly depend on the nuclear model (especially in the lower energy range). However the …
In this paper, we investigate deep inelastic and elastic scattering on a polarized spin-1/2 hadron using gauge/string duality. This spin-1/2 hadron corresponds to a supergravity mode of the dilatino. The polarized deep inelastic structure functions are computed in supergravity approximation at large t' Hooft coupling $λ$ and finite $x$ with $λ^{-1/2}\ll x<1$. Furthermore, we discuss the moments of all structure functions, and propose an interesting sum rule $\int_{0}^{1} \textrm{d}x g_2(x, q^2) =0$ for $g_2$ structure function which is known as the Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule in QCD. In the …
In this paper we investigate the role of inelastic collisions in the kinetic evolution of a highly overpopulated gluon system starting from Glasma-type initial condition. Using the Gunion-Bertsch formula we derive the inelastic collision kernel under the collinear and small angle approximations. With both numerics and analytic analysis, we show that the inelastic process has two effects: globally changing (mostly reducing) the total particle number, while locally at small momentum regime always filling up the infrared modes extremely quickly. This latter effect is found to significantly speed …
The importance of the effects of nucleon-nucleon (NN) short-range correlations (SRC) and Gribov inelastic shadowing (IS) on various high energy scattering processes involving nuclear targets is demonstrated within an improved Glauber-Gribov approach.
We study deep inelastic scattering on isospin asymmetric nuclei. In particular, the difference of the nuclear structure functions and the Gottfried sum rule for the lightest mirror nuclei, 3He and 3H, are investigated. It is found that such systems can provide significant information on charge symmetry breaking and flavor asymmetry in the nuclear medium. Furthermore, we propose a new method to extract the neutron structure function from radioactive isotopes far from the line of stability. We also discuss the flavor asymmetry in the Drell-Yan process with isospin asymmetric nuclei.
The contributions to the reaction cross section from the elastic and inelastic breakup processes, calculated within the post-form distorted wave Born-approximation theory, are used as constraints to determine the contributions to the imaginary part of the deuteron optical potentials (IPDOP) due to the breakup channels. The Coulomb part of this potential due to the elastic breakup process is seen to account for the long range absorption in the optical potential. The nuclear parts of the IPDOP due to the elastic and inelastic breakup modes peak in different regions of the nuclear surface, with t…
The semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of electrons off a nucleus A with detection of a slow nucleus (A-1) in the ground or low excitation states, i.e. the process A(e,e'(A-1))X, can provide useful information on the origin of the EMC effect and the mechanisms of hadronization. The theoretical description of the process is reviewed and the results of several calculations on few-body systems and complex nuclei are presented.
The folding formalism for the nucleon-nucleus optical potential and inelastic form factor is applied to study elastic and inelastic proton scattering on 30-40S isotopes. A recently developed realistic density dependent M3Y interaction, well tested in the folding analysis of nucleus-nucleus elastic and inelastic scattering, is used as effective NN interaction. The nuclear ground state and transition densities (for the 2+ excitations in Sulfur isotopes) are obtained in the Hartree-Fock-BCS and QRPA approaches, respectively. The best fit ratios of transition moments Mn/Mp for the lowest 2+ states…
We explore the possibility to measure the elastic and inelastic $ωN$ cross section in $p{+}d{\to}d{+}ω{+}p_{sp}$ and $p{+}A$ reactions. Our studies indicate that the elastic scattering cross sections can be determined for $ω$ momenta above 1 GeV/c in $p{+}d$ reactions by gating on high proton spectator momenta whereas the $ωN$ absorption cross section down to low relative $ω$ momenta is most effectively studied in $p{+}A$ reactions at beam energies 2.0--2.7 GeV
We extend our previous study of elastic pion-nucleon scattering in the framework of chiral perturbation theory by performing a combined analysis of the reactions $πN \to πN$ and $πN \to ππN$. The calculation is carried out to fourth order in the chiral expansion using the heavy baryon approach and the covariant formulation supplemented with a modified version of the extended on-mass-shell renormalization scheme. We demonstrate that a combined fit to experimental data in both channels leads to a reduced amount of correlations between the low-energy constants. A satisfactory description of the e…
The nuclear structure function F_2A(x) has been studied in the Bjorken limit for (l, l') scattering on nuclei in the region of x > 1 and was found to be very sensitive to the information contained in the nucleon spectral function in nuclei, particularly the correlations between momenta and energies in the region of large momenta. Calculations were done in a local density approximation using two different spectral functions for nuclear matter. Results are compared to those obtained for a spectral function which has been evaluated directly for the finite nucleus, ^{16}O, under consideration. For…
Based on the isospin-dependent Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck transport model and the scaling model according to nucleon effective mass, effects of elastic and inelastic NN scattering cross sections on pion-/pion+ in the neutron-rich reaction of Ca48+Ca48 at a beam energy of 400 MeV/nucleon are studied. It is found that cross-section effects of both NN elastic and inelastic scatterings affect Delta_1232, pion- and pion+ production, as well as the value of pion-/pion+.
The experimental data on elastic and inelastic scattering of 270 MeV 3He particles to several low lying states in 90Zr, 116Sn and 208Pb are analyzed within the double folding model (DFM). Fermi density distribution (FDD) of target nuclei is used to obtain real potentials with different powers. DF results are introduced into modified DWUCK4 code to calculate the elastic and inelastic scattering cross sections. Two choices of potentials form factors; Woods Saxon (WS) and Woods Saxon Squared (WS2) for real potential are used, while the imaginary part is taken as phenomenological Woods Saxon (PWS)…
We propose a possible perturbative QCD solution to the heavy quark tomography problem posed by recent non-photonic single electron data from central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 200$ AGeV. Jet quenching theory is extended to include (1) elastic as well as (2) inelastic parton energy losses and (3) jet path length fluctuations. The three effects combine to reduce the discrepancy between theory and the data without violating the global entropy bounds from multiplicity and elliptic flow data. We also check for consistency with the pion suppression data out to 20 GeV. Fluctuations of the geomet…
We present the LHC predictions for the WHDG model of radiative, elastic, and path length fluctuating energy loss. We find the pT dependence of RAA is qualitatively very different from AWS-based energy loss extrapolations to the LHC; the large pT reach of the year one data at the LHC should suffice to distinguish between the two. We also discuss the importance of requiring a first elastic scatter before any medium-induced elastic or radiative loss occurs, a necessary physical effect not considered in any previous models.
We show a relationship between elastic electron scattering observables and the elastic neutrino cross section that provides a straightforward determination of the latter from experimental data of the former and relates their uncertainties. An illustration of this procedure is presented using a Hartree-Fock mean field for the nuclear structure of a set of even-even nuclear targets, using the spectra of the neutrinos produced in pion decay at rest. We also analyze the prospects to measure the incoherent axial contribution to the neutrino elastic scattering in odd targets.
The inclusive pion double charge exchange process on nuclei is considered in the framework of the Gribov-Glauber approach. It is shown that inelastic rescatterings related to production of two (and more) pions in the intermediate state give an important contribution to the process of double charge exchange at kinetic energies above ~ 0.5 GeV. This mechanism dominates at energies greater or about 1 GeV and allows to explain the weak energy dependence of the double charge exchange cross section observed experimentally.
The microscopic coupled-channel calculation of inelastic proton scattering is performed for the study of neutron excitations in $2^+_1$ states of $^{18}$O, $^{10}$Be, $^{12}$Be, and $^{16}$C. Proton-nucleus potentials in the coupled-channel calculation are microscopically derived by folding the Melbourne $g$-matrix $NN$ interaction with matter and transition densities of target nuclei obtained by the structure model calculation of antisymmetrized molecular dynamics. The calculated result reasonably reproduces the elastic and inelastic proton scattering cross sections, and supports the dominant…
The Faddeev equation for three-body scattering at arbitrary energies is formulated in momentum space and directly solved in terms of momentum vectors without employing a partial wave decomposition. For identical bosons this results in a three-dimensional integral equation in five variables, magnitudes of relative momenta and angles. The cross sections for both elastic and breakup processes in the intermediate energy range up to about 1 GeV are calculated based on a Malfliet-Tjon type potential, and the convergence of the multiple scattering series is investigated.
The parametrization schemes of the effective nucleon-nucleon interaction proposed by Geramb and by Nakayama and Love are compared in their ability to reproduce the inelastic scattering observables of polarized protons from $^{12}$C with the excitation of the $1^+$ level with T=1. The off-shell behavior of the effective $t$ matrix is shown to be important. Density dependence of the effective interaction is also analyzed.
The elastic scattering cross section measured at energies $E\lesssim 10$ MeV/nucleon for some light heavy-ion systems having two identical cores like $^{16}$O+$^{12}$C exhibits an enhanced oscillatory pattern at the backward angles. Such a pattern is known to be due to the transfer of the valence nucleon or cluster between the two identical cores. In particular, the elastic $α$ transfer has been shown to originate directly from the core-exchange symmetry in the elastic $^{16}$O+$^{12}$C scattering. Given the strong transition strength of the $2^+_1$ state of $^{12}$C and its large overlap with…
We study inelastic neutrino scattering off hot nuclei for temperatures relevant under supernova conditions. The method we use is based on the quasiparticle random phase approximation extended to finite temperatures within the thermo field dynamics (TQRPA). The method allows a transparent treatment of upward and downward transitions in hot nuclei, avoiding the application of Brink's hypothesis. For the sample nuclei $^{56}$Fe and $^{82}$Ge we perform a detailed analysis of thermal effects on the strength distributions of allowed Gamow-Teller (GT) transitions which dominate the scattering proces…
We present a detailed description of high-energy neutrino and antineutrino inelastic inclusive scattering off nuclei in terms of nuclear structure functions. In our approach we take into account a QCD description of the nucleon structure functions as well as a number of basic nuclear effects including nuclear shadowing, Fermi motion and binding, nuclear pion excess and off-shell correction to bound nucleon structure functions. These effects prove to be important in the studies of charged-lepton deep-inelastic scattering. We discuss similarities and dissimilarities in the calculation of nuclear…
A theory of nucleus-nucleus collisions has been developed for kinetic energies substantially in excess of the binding energy. The very high pressure produced in the compound system as a result of the fusion of the two colliding nuclei is the reason for the subsequent hydrodynamic expansion of the nuclear medium. The energy and angular distributions of the reaction products are investigated. The charge distribution is also determined in the case where the nucleon and ion components of the reaction products are predominant. A solution is found for the expansion into vacuum of a sphere in which t…
Electron scattering is a tool that can provide relatively clean view of the nuclear structure in both ground and excited states, as it depends on the well-known electromagnetic interaction. But since the common expressions for its cross section were derived with certain assumptions, in this paper we describe several nontrivial steps necessary for a proper theoretical calculation within the current density-functional framework, namely with Skyrme QRPA for axial nuclei, with aim to enable comparison of the theoretically predicted low-lying $1^-$ toroidal modes with future (e,e') experiments.
Information on the equation of state (EOS) of neutron matter may be gained from studies of 208Pb. Descriptions of 208Pb require credible models of structure, taking particular note also of the spectrum. Such may be tested by analyses of scattering data. Herein, we report on such analyses using an RPA model for 208Pb in a folding model of the scattering. No a posteriori adjustment of parameters are needed to obtain excellent agreement with data. From those analyses, the skin thickness of 208Pb is constrained to lie in the range 0.13-0.17 fm.
The observed cross sections of quasi-elastic scattering of 6He, 7Be, and 8B nuclei by 12C nuclei are described within the framework of the diffraction nuclear model and the model of nucleus-nucleus scattering in the high-energy approximation with a double folding potential, for intermediate energies of the incident particles. The calculations make use of realistic distributions of nucleon densities and take account of the Coulomb interaction and inelastic scattering with excitation of low-lying collective states of the target.
Direct dark matter detection focuses on elastic scattering of dark matter particles off nuclei. In this study, we explore inelastic scattering where the nucleus is excited to a low-lying state of 10-100 keV, with subsequent prompt de-excitation. We calculate the inelastic structure factors for the odd-mass xenon isotopes based on state-of-the-art large-scale shell-model calculations with chiral effective field theory WIMP-nucleon currents. For these cases, we find that the inelastic channel is comparable to or can dominate the elastic channel for momentum transfers around 150 MeV. We calculate…
The possibility of a reliable extraction of the neutron deep inelastic structure function, $F_2^n(x)$, for $ x < 0.85$ from joint measurements of deep inelastic structure functions of deuteron, $^{3}He$ and $^{3}H$ is investigated. The model dependence in this extraction, linked to the possible different interactions between nucleons in nuclei, is shown to be weak, if the nuclear structure effects are properly taken into account. A combined analysis of the deep inelastic structure functions of these nuclei is proposed to study effects beyond the impulse approximation.
We use several diverse parameterizations of diffractive parton distributions, extracted in leading twist QCD analyses of the HERA diffractive deep inelastic scattering (DIS) data, to make predictions for leading twist nuclear shadowing of nuclear quark and gluon distributions in DIS on nuclei. We find that the HERA diffractive data are sufficiently precise to allow us to predict large nuclear shadowing for gluons and quarks, unambiguously. We performed detailed studies of nuclear shadowing for up and charm sea quarks and gluons within several scenarios of shadowing and diffractive slopes, as w…

The elastic and inelastic proton scattering on $^{18,20,22}$O nuclei are studied in a folding model formalism of nucleon-nucleus optical potential and inelastic form factor. The DDM3Y effective interaction is used and the ground state densities are obtained in continuum Skyrme-HFB approach. A semi-microscopic approach of collective form factors is done to extract the deformation parameters from inelastic scattering analysis while the microscopic approach uses the continuum QRPA form factors. Implications of the values of the deformation parameters, neutron and proton transition moments for the…
We study nuclear effect in the $F^A_3(x)$ structure function in the deep inelastic neutrino reactions on iron by taking into account Fermi motion, binding, target mass correction, shadowing and anti-shadowing corrections. Calculations have been done in a local density approximation using relativistic nuclear spectral functions which include nucleon correlations for nuclear matter. Results for $F^A_3(x)$ have been compared with the results reported at NuTeV and also with some of the older experiments reported in the literature.
The results of an experiment on inclusive electron scattering from an oxygen jet target, performed in a wide range of energy and momentum transfer covering both quasi-elastic and $Δ$(1232) resonance regions, are reported. In the former region the theoretical predictions, obtained including effects of nucleon-nucleon correlations in both initial and final states, give a good description of the experimental data. In the inelastic region a broadening as well as a damping of the resonant part of the cross section with respect to the free nucleon case is observed. The need of more detailed calculat…
We systematically derive a length scale characterizing the size of a low-lying, beta stable nucleus from empirical data for the diffraction peak angle in the proton inelastic differential cross section of incident energy of \sim 1 GeV. In doing so, we assume that the target nucleus in the ground state is a completely absorptive "black" sphere of radius a. The cross section πa^2, where a is determined in such a way as to reproduce the empirical proton diffraction peak angle in the elastic channel, is known to agree with empirical total reaction cross sections for incident protons to within erro…
Recent calculations of the effects of hadronization and final state interaction (FSI) in semi-exclusive deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) $A(e,e'(A-1))X$ processes are reviewed. The basic ingredient underlying these calculations, {\it viz} the time-dependent effective debris-nucleon cross section is illustrated, and some relevant results on complex nuclei and the deuteron are presented. In the latter case, particular attention is paid to the choice of the kinematics, for such a choice would in principle allow one to investigate both the structure function of a bound nucleon as well as the hadron…
Angular distributions for elastic and inelastic scattering of $^3$He from $^{12}$C were measured at energies 50.5 and 60 MeV. The Airy minimum of the prerainbow scattering was clearly observed in the angular distributions for the 0$_2^+$ (7.65 MeV) state of $^{12}$C (Hoyle state). The experimental results were analyzed with a coupled channels method with double folding potentials derived from the microscopic wave functions for the ground 0$_1^+$, 2$^+$ (4.44 MeV), 3$^-$ (9.64 MeV) and 0$_2^+$ states. The analysis supports the view that the Hoyle state is a three alpha particle condensate with …
