Decoherence and non-Hermiticity are two different effects of the open quantum systems. Both of them have triggered many interesting phenomena. In this paper, we theoretically study an open two-level non-Hermitian system coupling to a dissipative environment by solving the vectorized Lindblad equation. This scheme provides us a powerful framework to address widespread open systems with gain, loss and dissipation. Our results show that there exist a new class of exceptional points (EPs) and steady states due to the interplay between non-Hermiticity and decoherence. Furthermore, we also demonstrate new-type topological properties of eigenstates with zero real-part of eigenvalues ($Re[λ]=0$) which are corresponding to Fermi arcs. It is revealed that the phases of eigenstates located in Fermi arcs regime have a topological phase $|π/2|$ which is totally unaffected by the dissipative environment. Our results provide a promising approach for further uncovering and understanding the intriguing properties of non-Hermitian open systems.
We propose a scheme for parameter estimation with the steady states of non-Hermitian spin chains. The parameters to be estimated are encoded in the system via the external magnetic field that imposed on the first site of the chain. We obtain the analytical spectrum for the spin chain of two sites. We find that the quantum Fisher information (QFI) about the amplitude of the imposing field diverges while the QFI about the azimuthal angle reaches to the maximum at exceptional points. Moreover, the QFI is enhanced as the system size increasing and saturates for sufficiently long spin chain because…
In the absence of decay, the conditional dynamics for an opensystem is often describable by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. This study investigates spin squeezing (SS) in non-Hermitian one-axis twisting (OAT) model. Somewhat surprisingly, SS close to the limit of Hermitian two-axis counter twisting (TACT) Hamiltonian is achievable for some parameters, which significantly improves upon the optimal value realizable by Hermitian OAT model. The drawback is like with all conditional schemes, it takes on average longer time to evolve into steady state, and the probability of no decay or success decreas…
We describe a diagrammatic technique for non-Hermitian fermionic systems that is applicable in the steady state, and which allows addressing correlations effects by systematic expansion. Applying this method to exceptional points or rings, we find that nodal objects in non-Hermitian systems are generically displaced in momentum-space due to interactions. This in turn can be connected to the fact that exceptional points invariably break a class of orthonormal symmetries that are generally present for nodal points in Hermitian systems, and which protect the integrity of the node at low energy sc…
The cooperation between non-Hermiticity and interaction brings about a lot of counterintuitive behaviors, which are impossible to exist in the framework of the Hermitian system. We study the effect of a non-Hermitian impurity on the Hubbard model in the context of $η$ symmetry. We show that the non-Hermitian Hubbard Hamiltonian can respect a full real spectrum even if a local non-Hermitian impurity is applied to. The balance between dissipation of single fermion and on-site pair fluctuation results in a highest-order coalescing state with off-diagonal long-range order (ODLRO). Based on the cha…
We show how generic non-Hermitian tight-binding lattice models can be realized in an unconditional, quantum-mechanically consistent manner by constructing an appropriate open quantum system. We focus on the quantum steady states of such models for both fermionic and bosonic systems. Surprisingly, key features and spatial structures in the steady state cannot be simply understood from the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian alone. Using the 1D Hatano-Nelson model as a paradigmatic example, we show that the steady state has a marked sensitivity to boundary conditions. This dependence however is qualitativ…
A longstanding tool to characterize the evolution of open Markovian quantum systems is the GKSL (Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad) master equation. However, in some cases, open quantum systems can be effectively described with non-Hermitian Hamiltonians, which have attracted great interest in the last twenty years due to a number of unconventional properties, such as the appearance of exceptional points. Here, we present a short review of these two different approaches aiming in particular to highlight their relation and illustrate different ways of connecting non-Hermitian Hamiltonian to…
We introduce non-Hermitian generalizations of Majorana zero modes (MZMs) which appear in the topological phase of a weakly dissipative Kitaev chain coupled to a Markovian bath. Notably, the presence of MZMs ensures that the steady state in the absence of decoherence events is two-fold degenerate. Within a stochastic wavefunction approach, the effective Hamiltonian governing the coherent, non-unitary dynamics retains BDI classification of the closed limit, but belongs to one of four non-Hermitian "flavors" of the ten-fold way. We argue for the stability of MZMs due to a generalization of partic…
The beam-splitter (BS) is one of the most common and important components in modern optics, and lossless BS which features unitary transformation induces Hermitian evolution of light. However, the practical BS based on the conversion between different degree of freedoms are naturally non-Hermitian, as a result of essentially open quantum dynamics. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate a non-Hermitian BS for the interference between traveling photonic and localized magnonic modes. The non-Hermitian magnon-photon BS is achieved by the coherent and incoherent interaction mediated by the exc…
Quantized response is one distinguishing feature of a topological system. In non-Hermitian systems, the spectral winding topology yields quantized steady-state response. By considering two weakly coupled non-Hermitian chains, we discover that the spectral winding topology of one chain can be probed by a steady-state response defined solely on the other chain, even when other important properties, e.g., {energetics} and entanglement entropy, indicate that eigen-solutions are effectively {not hybridized} between the two chains. This intriguing phenomenon, as carefully investigated in a large par…
Quantum phase transitions also occur in non-Hermitian systems. In this work we show that density functional theory, for the first time, uncovers universal behaviors for phase transitions in non-Hermitian many-body systems. To be specific, we first prove that the non-degenerate steady state of a non-Hermitian quantum many-body system is a universal function of the first derivative of the steady state energy with respect to the control parameter. This finding has far-reaching consequences for non-Hermitian systems: (i) It bridges the nonanalytic behavior in physical observable and nonanalytic be…
We consider strongly interacting systems of effective spins, subject to dissipative spin-flip processes associated with optical pumping. We predict the existence of novel magnetic phases in the steady-state of this system, which emerge due to the competition between coherent and dissipative processes. Specifically, for strongly anisotropic spin-spin interactions, we find ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, spin-density-wave, and staggered-XY steady states, which are separated by nonequilibrium phase transitions meeting at a Lifshitz point. These transitions are accompanied by quantum correlation…
We study quantum phase transitions in non-Hermitian XY and transverse-field Ising spin chains, in which the non-Hermiticity arises from the imaginary magnetic field. Analytical and numerical results show that at exceptional points, coalescing eigenstates in these models close to W, distant Bell and GHZ states, which can be steady states in dynamical preparation scheme proposed by T. D. Lee et. al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 250401 (2014)). Selecting proper initial states, numerical simulations demonstrate the time evolution process to the target states with high fidelity.
We propose a mechanism of unconventional Rydberg pumping (URP) via simultaneously driving each Rydberg atom by two classical fields with different strengths of Rabi frequencies. This mechanism differs from the general Rydberg blockade or Rydberg antiblockade since it is closely related to the ground states of atoms, i.e. two atoms in the same ground state are stable while two atoms in different ground states are resonantly excited. Furthermore, we find the URP can be employed to simplify some special quantum information processing tasks, such as implementation of a three-qubit controlled phase…
We investigate steady-state properties of a two-dimensional incoherent-pumped dissipative Bose-Hubbard model, which describes a photon square lattice. This incoherent pumping exhibits an important environment-induced higher-order fluctuation effect, which induces a strong competition between the driven-dissipative channel, the photon-photon interaction, and the photon hopping in multi-photon processes. This new competition gives rise to a spontaneous breaking of the U(1) symmetry of system. As a result, we predict a many-body steady-state localized-delocalized phase transition and an anti-bloc…
In this work, we study the time evolution of a coherent spin state under the action of a non-hermitian hamiltonian. The hamiltonian is modeled by a one-axis twisting term plus a Lipkin-type interaction. We show that when the Lipkin interaction is switched on, depending on the relative values of the coupling constants, the initial state evolves into a steady squeezed state which minimizes the Uncertainty Relations, Intelligent Spin State. We apply this result to look for the generation of an steady intelligent spin state from an ensemble of nitrogen vacancy colour centers in diamond coupled to …
Recently, the study of non-Hermitian physics has attracted considerable attention. The modified bulk-boundary correspondence has been proposed to understand topological edge states in non-Hermitian static systems. Here we report a new experimental observation of edge states in non-Hermitian periodically driven systems. Some unconventional edge states are found not to be satisfied with the bulk-boundary correspondence when the system belongs to the broken parity-time (PT) symmetric phase. The experiments are performed in our constructed non-Hermitian light quantum walk platform with left and ri…
In this work we study many-body 'steady states' that arise in the non-Hermitian generalisation of the non-interacting Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model at a finite density of fermions. We find that the hitherto known phase diagrams for this system, derived from the single-particle gap closings, in fact correspond to distinct non-equilibrium phases, which either carry finite currents or are dynamical insulators where particles are entrapped. Each of these have distinct quasi-particle excitations and steady state correlations and entanglement properties. Looking at finite-sized systems, we further modu…
We systematically investigate possible helix states in XXZ Heisenberg model with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. Exact solutions show that a set of precession helix states can be constructed by deliberate superposition of degenerate eigenstates of the Hamiltonian under the resonant condition. When a non-Hermitian balance boundary term is imposed as a quenching action, the quench dynamics shows that a steady helix state emerges from some easily prepared initial states, including saturate and maximally mixed ferromagnetic states, according to the analysis of perturbation method. The corr…
Physically, one tends to think of non-Hermitian systems in terms of gain and loss: the decay or amplification of a mode is given by the imaginary part of its energy. Here, we introduce an alternative avenue to the realm of non-Hermitian physics, which involves neither gain nor loss. Instead, complex eigenvalues emerge from the amplitudes and phase-differences of waves backscattered from the boundary of insulators. We show that for any strong topological insulator in a Wigner-Dyson class, the reflected waves are characterized by a reflection matrix exhibiting the non-Hermitian skin effect. This…
Non-Hermiticity can destroy Anderson localization and lead to delocalization even in one dimension. However, the unified understanding of the non-Hermitian delocalization has yet to be established. Here, we develop a scaling theory of localization in non-Hermitian systems. We reveal that non-Hermiticity introduces a new scale and breaks down the one-parameter scaling, which is the central assumption of the conventional scaling theory of localization. Instead, we identify the origin of the unconventional non-Hermitian delocalization as the two-parameter scaling. Furthermore, we establish the th…

Non-unitary quantum mechanics has been used in the past to study irreversibility, dissipation and decay in a variety of physical systems. In this letter, we propose a general scheme to deal with systems governed by non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. We argue that the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism gives a natural description for those problems. To elucidate the method, we study a simple model inspired by mesoscopic physics --an asymmetric junction. The system is governed by a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian which captures essential aspects of irreversibility.
Both non-Hermitian systems and the behaviour of emitters coupled to structured baths have been studied intensely in recent years. Here we study the interplay of these paradigmatic settings. In a series of examples, we show that a single quantum emitter coupled to a non-Hermitian bath displays a number of unconventional behaviours, many without Hermitian counterpart. We first consider a unidirectional hopping lattice whose complex dispersion forms a loop. We identify peculiar bound states inside the loop as a manifestation of the non-Hermitian skin effect. In the same setting, emitted photons m…
Non-Hermiticity and dephasing, collaborating in an unusual wave packet dynamics, realizes unconventional entanglement evolution in a disordered, interacting and asymmetric (non-reciprocal) quantum medium. Taking the Hatano-Nelson model as a concrete example, we first consider how wave packet spreads in a non-Hermitian disordered system for demonstraing that it is very different from the Hermitian case. Interestingly, a cascade like wave packet spreading as in the Hermitian case is suppressed in the clean limit and at weak disorder, while it revives in the vicinity of the localization-delocaliz…
Non-Hermitian quantum many-body systems are attracting widespread interest for their exotic properties, including unconventional quantum criticality and topology. Here we study how quantum information and correlations spread under a quantum quench generated by a prototypical non-Hermitian spin chain. Using the mapping to fermions we solve exactly the problem and compute the entanglement entropy and the correlation dynamics in the thermodynamic limit. Depending on the quench parameters, we identify two dynamical phases. One is characterized by rapidly saturating entanglement and correlations. T…

As a hallmark of pure quantum effect, quantum entanglement has provided unconventional routes to condensed matter systems. Here, from the perspective of quantum entanglement, we disclose exotic quantum physics in non-Hermitian quasicrystals. We present a class of experimentally realizable models for non-Hermitian quasicrystal chains, in which asymmetric hopping and complex potential coexist. We diagnose global phase diagram by means of entanglement from both real-space and momentum-space partition. By measuring entanglement entropy, we numerically determine the metal-insulator transition point…
