Machine learning (ML) methods and neural networks (NN) are widely implemented for crop types recognition and classification based on satellite images. However, most of these studies use several multi-temporal images which could be inapplicable for cloudy regions. We present a comparison between the classical ML approaches and U-Net NN for classifying crops with a single satellite image. The results show the advantages of using field-wise classification over pixel-wise approach. We first used a Bayesian aggregation for field-wise classification and improved on 1.5% results between majority voting aggregation. The best result for single satellite image crop classification is achieved for gradient boosting with an overall accuracy of 77.4% and macro F1-score 0.66.
We propose Spatio-temporal Crop Aggregation for video representation LEarning (SCALE), a novel method that enjoys high scalability at both training and inference time. Our model builds long-range video features by learning from sets of video clip-level features extracted with a pre-trained backbone. To train the model, we propose a self-supervised objective consisting of masked clip feature prediction. We apply sparsity to both the input, by extracting a random set of video clips, and to the loss function, by only reconstructing the sparse inputs. Moreover, we use dimensionality reduction by w…

Hyperspectral Imagining is a type of digital imaging in which each pixel contains typically hundreds of wavelengths of light providing spectroscopic information about the materials present in the pixel. In this paper we provide classification methods for determining crop type in the USGS GHISACONUS data, which contains around 7,000 pixel spectra from the five major U.S. agricultural crops (winter wheat, rice, corn, soybeans, and cotton) collected by the NASA Hyperion satellite, and includes the spectrum, geolocation, crop type, and stage of growth for each pixel. We apply standard LDA and QDA …

In recent years, an abundance of feature attribution methods for explaining neural networks have been developed. Especially in the field of computer vision, many methods for generating saliency maps providing pixel attributions exist. However, their explanations often contradict each other and it is not clear which explanation to trust. A natural solution to this problem is the aggregation of multiple explanations. We present and compare different pixel-based aggregation schemes with the goal of generating a new explanation, whose fidelity to the model's decision is higher than each individual…

We propose a novel optimization framework that crops a given image based on user description and aesthetics. Unlike existing image cropping methods, where one typically trains a deep network to regress to crop parameters or cropping actions, we propose to directly optimize for the cropping parameters by repurposing pre-trained networks on image captioning and aesthetic tasks, without any fine-tuning, thereby avoiding training a separate network. Specifically, we search for the best crop parameters that minimize a combined loss of the initial objectives of these networks. To make the optimizati…

At present, the majority of the proposed Deep Learning (DL) methods provide point predictions without quantifying the models uncertainty. However, a quantification of the reliability of automated image analysis is essential, in particular in medicine when physicians rely on the results for making critical treatment decisions. In this work, we provide an entire framework to diagnose ischemic stroke patients incorporating Bayesian uncertainty into the analysis procedure. We present a Bayesian Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) yielding a probability for a stroke lesion on 2D Magnetic Resonance (…
Global operations, such as global average pooling, are widely used in top-performance image restorers. They aggregate global information from input features along entire spatial dimensions but behave differently during training and inference in image restoration tasks: they are based on different regions, namely the cropped patches (from images) and the full-resolution images. This paper revisits global information aggregation and finds that the image-based features during inference have a different distribution than the patch-based features during training. This train-test inconsistency negat…

The progression of breast cancer can be quantified in lymph node whole-slide images (WSIs). We describe a novel method for effectively performing classification of whole-slide images and patient level breast cancer grading. Our method utilises a deep neural network. The method performs classification on small patches and uses model averaging for boosting. In the first step, region of interest patches are determined and cropped automatically by color thresholding and then classified by the deep neural network. The classification results are used to determine a slide level class and for further …
Multiple instance (MI) learning with a convolutional neural network enables end-to-end training in the presence of weak image-level labels. We propose a new method for aggregating predictions from smaller regions of the image into an image-level classification by using the quantile function. The quantile function provides a more complete description of the heterogeneity within each image, improving image-level classification. We also adapt image augmentation to the MI framework by randomly selecting cropped regions on which to apply MI aggregation during each epoch of training. This provides a…
