The problem of comparing the entire second order structure of two functional processes is considered and a $L^2$-type statistic for testing equality of the corresponding spectral density operators is investigated. The test statistic evaluates, over all frequencies, the Hilbert-Schmidt distance between the two estimated spectral density operators. Under certain assumptions, the limiting distribution under the null hypothesis is derived. A novel frequency domain bootstrap method is introduced, which leads to a more accurate approximation of the distribution of the test statistic under the null than the large sample Gaussian approximation derived. Under quite general conditions, asymptotic validity of the bootstrap procedure is established for estimating the distribution of the test statistic under the null. Furthermore, consistency of the bootstrap-based test under the alternative is proved. Numerical simulations show that, even for small samples, the bootstrap-based test has a very good size and power behavior. An application to a bivariate real-life functional time series illustrates the methodology proposed.
We consider strictly stationary stochastic processes of Hilbert space-valued random variables and focus on fully functional tests for the equality of the lag-zero autocovariance operators of several independent functional time series. A moving block bootstrap-based testing procedure is proposed which generates pseudo random elements that satisfy the null hypothesis of interest. It is based on directly bootstrapping the time series of tensor products which overcomes some common difficulties associated with applications of the bootstrap to related testing problems. The suggested methodology can …

In this paper we develop methodology for testing relevant hypotheses about functional time series in a tuning-free way. Instead of testing for exact equality, for example for the equality of two mean functions from two independent time series, we propose to test the null hypothesis of no relevant deviation. In the two sample problem this means that an $L^2$-distance between the two mean functions is smaller than a pre-specified threshold. For such hypotheses self-normalization, which was introduced by Shao (2010) and Shao and Zhang (2010) and is commonly used to avoid the estimation of nuisanc…
Frequently econometricians are interested in verifying a relationship between two or more time series. Such analysis is typically carried out by causality and/or independence tests which have been well studied when the data is univariate or multivariate. Modern data though is increasingly of a high dimensional or functional nature for which finite dimensional methods are not suitable. In the present paper we develop methodology to check the assumption that data obtained from two functional time series are independent. Our procedure is based on the norms of empirical cross covariance operators …
We consider the problem of testing equality of functions $f_j:[0,1]\to \mathbb{R}$ for $j=1,2,...,J$ the basis of $J$ independent samples from possibly different distributions under the assumption that the functions are monotone. We provide a uniform approach that covers testing equality of monotone regression curves, equality of monotone densities and equality of monotone hazards in the random censorship model. Two test statistics are proposed based on $L_1$-distances. We show that both statistics are asymptotically normal and we provide bootstrap implementations, which are shown to have crit…
We derive and study a significance test for determining if a panel of functional time series is separable. In the context of this paper, separability means that the covariance structure factors into the product of two functions, one depending only on time and the other depending only on the coordinates of the panel. Separability is a property which can dramatically improve computational efficiency by substantially reducing model complexity. It is especially useful for functional data as it implies that the functional principal components are the same for each member of the panel. However such …
In this article, we focus on the problem of testing the equality of several high dimensional mean vectors with unequal covariance matrices. This is one of the most important problem in multivariate statistical analysis and there have been various tests proposed in the literature. Motivated by \citet{BaiS96E} and \cite{ChenQ10T}, a test statistic is introduced and the asymptomatic distributions under the null hypothesis as well as the alternative hypothesis are given. In addition, it is compared with a test statistic recently proposed by \cite{SrivastavaK13Ta}. It is shown that our test statist…
This paper concerns a method of testing equality of distribution of random convex compact sets and the way how to use the test to distinguish between two realisations of general random sets. The family of metrics on the space of distributions of random convex compact sets is constructed using the theory of N-distances and characteristic functions of random convex compact sets. Further, the approximation of the metrics through its finite dimensional counterparts is proposed, which lead to a new statistical test for testing equality in distribution of two random convex compact sets. Then, it is …
There has been an increasing interest in testing the equality of large Pearson's correlation matrices. However, in many applications it is more important to test the equality of large rank-based correlation matrices since they are more robust to outliers and nonlinearity. Unlike the Pearson's case, testing the equality of large rank-based statistics has not been well explored and requires us to develop new methods and theory. In this paper, we provide a framework for testing the equality of two large U-statistic based correlation matrices, which include the rank-based correlation matrices as s…
In this paper, we investigate the testing problem that the spectral density matrices of several, not necessarily independent, stationary processes are equal. Based on an $L_2$-type test statistic, we propose a new nonparametric approach, where the critical values of the tests are calculated with the help of randomization methods. We analyze asymptotic exactness and consistency of these randomization tests and show in simulation studies that the new procedures posses very good size and power characteristics.
Based on periodogram-ratios of two univariate time series at different frequency points, two tests are proposed for comparing their spectra. One is an Anderson-Darling-like statistic for testing the equality of two time-invariant spectra. The other is the maximum of Anderson-Darling-like statistics for testing the equality of two spectra no matter that they are time-invariant and time-varying. Both of two tests are applicable for independent or dependent time series. Several simulation examples show that the proposed statistics outperform those that are also based on periodogram-ratios but con…
We propose a robust test for the equality of the covariance structures in two functional samples. The test statistic has a chi-square asymptotic distribution with a known number of degrees of freedom, which depends on the level of dimension reduction needed to represent the data. Detailed analysis of the asymptotic properties is developed. Finite sample performance is examined by a simulation study and an application to egg-laying curves of fruit flies.
In the classical two-sample problem, the conventional approach for testing distributions equality is based on the difference between the two marginal empirical distribution functions, whereas a test for independence is based on the contrast between the bivariate and the product of the marginal empirical distribution functions. In this article we consider the problem of testing independence and distributions equality when the observer is "colour blind" so he cannot distinguish the distribution which has generated each of the two measurements. Within a nonparametric framework, we propose an empi…
In many situations, when dealing with several populations, equality of the covariance operators is assumed. An important issue is to study if this assumption holds before making other inferences. In this paper, we develop a test for comparing covariance operators of several functional data samples. The proposed test is based on the Hilbert--Schmidt norm of the difference between estimated covariance operators. In particular, when dealing with two populations, the tests statistic is just the squared norm of the difference between the two covariance operators estimators. The asymptotic behaviour…
In this paper we study the problem of testing the null hypothesis that errors from k independent parametrically specified generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) models have the same distribution versus a general alternative. First we establish the asymptotic validity of a class of linear test statistics derived from the k residual-based empirical distribution functions. A distinctive feature is that the asymptotic distribution of the test statistics involves terms depending on the distributions of errors and the parameters of the models, and weight functions providin…

We investigate properties of a bootstrap-based methodology for testing hypotheses about equality of certain characteristics of the distributions between different populations in the context of functional data. The suggested testing methodology is simple and easy to implement. It resamples the original dataset in such a way that the null hypothesis of interest is satisfied and it can be potentially applied to a wide range of testing problems and test statistics of interest. Furthermore, it can be utilized to the case where more than two populations of functional data are considered. We illustra…
We develop a test of normality for spatially indexed functions. The assumption of normality is common in spatial statistics, yet no significance tests, or other means of assessment, have been available for functional data. This paper aims at filling this gap in the case of functional observations on a spatial grid. Our test compares the moments of the spatial (frequency domain) principal component scores to those of a suitable Gaussian distribution. Critical values can be readily obtained from a chi-squared distribution. We provide rigorous theoretical justification for a broad class of weakly…
Interest in functional time series has spiked in the recent past with papers covering both methodology and applications being published at a much increased pace. This article contributes to the research in this area by proposing a new stationarity test for functional time series based on frequency domain methods. The proposed test statistics is based on joint dimension reduction via functional principal components analysis across the spectral density operators at all Fourier frequencies, explicitly allowing for frequency-dependent levels of truncation to adapt to the dynamics of the underlying…
In the context of the widely used competing risks set-up we discuss different inference procedures for testing equality of two cumulative incidence functions, where the data may be subject to independent right-censoring or left-truncation. To this end we compare two-sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov- and Cramer-von Mises-type test statistics. Since, in general, their corresponding asymptotic limit distributions depend on unknown quantities, we utilize wild bootstrap resampling as well as approximation techniques to construct adequate test decisions. Here the latter procedures are motivated from testin…
The log-normal distribution is one of the most common distributions used for modeling skewed and positive data. It frequently arises in many disciplines of science, specially in the biological and medical sciences. The statistical analysis for comparing the means of two independent log-normal distributions is an issue of significant interest. In this paper we present a robust test for this problem. The unknown parameters of the model are estimated by minimum density power divergence estimators (Basu et al 1998, Biometrika, 85(3), 549-559). The robustness as well as the asymptotic properties of…
Several procedures have been recently proposed to test the simplifying assumption for conditional copulas. Instead of considering pointwise conditioning events, we study the constancy of the conditional dependence structure when some covariates belong to general borelian conditioning subsets. Several test statistics based on the equality of conditional Kendall's tau are introduced, and we derive their asymptotic distributions under the null. When such conditioning events are not fixed ex ante, we propose a data-driven procedure to recursively build such relevant subsets. It is based on decisio…
We present a general approach to constructing permutation tests that are both exact for the null hypothesis of equality of distributions and asymptotically correct for testing equality of parameters of distributions while allowing the distributions themselves to differ. These robust permutation tests transform a given test statistic by a consistent estimator of its limiting distribution function before enumerating its permutation distribution. This transformation, known as prepivoting, aligns the unconditional limiting distribution for the test statistic with the probability limit of its permu…
This paper considers the problem of testing the equality of two unspecified distributions. The classical omnibus tests such as the Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Cramèr-von Mises are known to suffer from low power against essentially all but location-scale alternatives. We propose a new two-sample test that modifies the Neyman's smooth test and extend it to the multivariate case based on the idea of projection pursue. The asymptotic null property of the test and its power against local alternatives are studied. The multiplier bootstrap method is employed to compute the critical value of the multivaria…
We propose a novel test statistic for testing exogeneity in the functional linear regression model. In contrast to Hausman-type tests in finite dimensional linear regression setups, a direct extension to the functional linear regression model is not possible. Instead, we propose a test statistic based on the sum of the squared difference of projections of the two estimators for testing the null hypothesis of exogeneity in the functional linear regression model. We derive asymptotic normality under the null and consistency under general alternatives. Moreover, we prove bootstrap consistency res…
This article studies global testing of the slope function in functional linear regression model in the framework of reproducing kernel Hilbert space. We propose a new testing statistic based on smoothness regularization estimators. The asymptotic distribution of the testing statistic is established under null hypothesis. It is shown that the null asymptotic distribution is determined jointly by the reproducing kernel and the covariance function. Our theoretical analysis shows that the proposed testing is consistent over a class of smooth local alternatives. Despite the generality of the method…
We consider the estimation of quadratic functionals in a Gaussian sequence model where the eigenvalues are supposed to be unknown and accessible through noisy observations only. Imposing smoothness assumptions both on the signal and the sequence of eigenvalues, we develop a minimax theory for this problem. We propose a truncated series estimator and show that it attains the optimal rate of convergence if the truncation parameter is chosen appropriately. Consequences for testing problems in inverse problems are equally discussed: in particular, the minimax rates of testing for signal detection …
In a circular convolution model, we aim to infer on the density of a circular random variable using observations contaminated by an additive measurement error. We highlight the interplay of the two problems: optimal testing and quadratic functional estimation. Under general regularity assumptions, we determine an upper bound for the minimax risk of estimation for the quadratic functional. The upper bound consists of two terms, one that mimics a classical bias-variance trade-off and a second that causes the typical elbow effect in quadratic functional estimation. Using a minimax optimal estimat…
This paper examines the problem of nonparametric testing for the no-effect of a random covariate (or predictor) on a functional response. This means testing whether the conditional expectation of the response given the covariate is almost surely zero or not, without imposing any model relating response and covariate. The covariate could be univariate, multivariate or functional. Our test statistic is a quadratic form involving univariate nearest neighbor smoothing and the asymptotic critical values are given by the standard normal law. When the covariate is multidimensional or functional, a pr…
Along the lines of Janssen's and Pfanzagl's work the testing theory for statistical functionals is further developed for non-parametric one-sample problems. Efficient tests for the one-sided and two-sided problems are derived for nonparametric statistical functionals. The asymptotic power function is calculated under implicit alternatives and hypotheses, which are given by the functional itself, for the one- sided and two-sided cases. Under mild regularity assumptions it is shown that these tests are asymptotic most powerful. The combination of the modern theory of Le Cam and approximation in …
We consider the problem of testing a particular type of composite null hypothesis under a nonparametric multivariate regression model. For a given quadratic functional $Q$, the null hypothesis states that the regression function $f$ satisfies the constraint $Q[f]=0$, while the alternative corresponds to the functions for which $Q[f]$ is bounded away from zero. On the one hand, we provide minimax rates of testing and the exact separation constants, along with a sharp-optimal testing procedure, for diagonal and nonnegative quadratic functionals. We consider smoothness classes of ellipsoidal form…
We propose an estimator of the Hilbert-Schmidt Independence Criterion obtained from an appropriate modification of the usual estimator. We then get asymptotic normality of this estimator both under independence hypothesis and under the alternative hypothesis. A new test for independence of random variables valued into metric spaces is then introduced, and a simulation study that allows to compare the proposed test to an existing one is provided
Consider a Poisson point process with unknown support boundary curve $g$, which forms a prototype of an irregular statistical model. We address the problem of estimating non-linear functionals of the form $\int Φ(g(x))\,dx$. Following a nonparametric maximum-likelihood approach, we construct an estimator which is UMVU over Hölder balls and achieves the (local) minimax rate of convergence. These results hold under weak assumptions on $Φ$ which are satisfied for $Φ(u)=|u|^p$, $p\ge 1$. As an application, we consider the problem of estimating the $L^p$-norm and derive the minimax separation rates…
The greatest root statistic arises as the test statistic in several multivariate analysis settings. Suppose there is a global null hypothesis that consists of different independent sub-null hypotheses, and suppose the greatest root statistic is used as the test statistic for each sub-null hypothesis. Such problems may arise when conducting a batch MANOVA or several batches of pairwise testing for equality of covariance matrices. Using the union-intersection testing approach and by letting the problem dimension tend to infinity faster than the number of batches, we show that the global null can…
For the multi-sample equal covariance function (ECF) testing problem, Zhang (2013) proposed an $L^{2}$-norm based test. However, its asymptotic power and finite sample performance have not been studied. In this paper, its asymptotic power is investigated under some mild conditions. It is shown that the $L^2$-norm based test is root-$n$ consistent. In addition, intensive simulation studies demonstrate that in terms of size-controlling and power, the $L^{2}$-norm based test outperforms the dimension-reduction based test proposed by Fremdt et al. (2013) when the functional data are less correlate…
In this paper, we propose two new tests for testing the equality of the covariance functions of several functional populations, namely a quasi GPF test and a quasi $F_{\max}$ test. The asymptotic random expressions of the two tests under the null hypothesis are derived. We show that the asymptotic null distribution of the quasi GPF test is a chi-squared-type mixture whose distribution can be well approximated by a simple scaled chi-squared distribution. We also adopt a random permutation method for approximating the null distributions of the quasi GPF and $F_{\max}$ tests. The random permutati…
In this paper we consider some hypothesis tests within a family of Wishart distributions, where both the sample space and the parameter space are symmetric cones. For such testing problems, we first derive the joint density of the ordered eigenvalues of the generalized Wishart distribution and propose a test statistic analog to that of classical multivariate statistics for testing homoscedasticity of covariance matrix. In this generalization of Bartlett's test for equality of variances to hypotheses of real, complex, quaternion, Lorentz and octonion types of covariance structures.
