We study the cohomological rigidity problem of two families of manifolds with torus actions: the so-called moment-angle manifolds, whose study is linked with combinatorial geometry and combinatorial commutative algebra; and topological toric manifolds, which are topological generalizations of toric varieties. In this paper we prove that when a simplicial sphere satisfies certain combinatorial conditions, the corresponding moment-angle manifold and topological toric manifolds are cohomologically rigid, i.e. their homeomorphism classes in their own families are determined by their cohomology rings. In the case of toric varieties, cohomology even determine the isomorphism classes of varieties. Our main strategy is to show that the combinatorial types of these simplicial spheres are determined by the $\mathrm{Tor}$-algebras of their face rings. This turns out to be a solution to a known problem in combinatorial commutative algebra for a class of spheres.
The cohomological rigidity problem for toric manifolds asks whether toric manifolds are diffeomorphic (or homeomorphic) if their integral cohomology rings are isomorphic. Many affirmative partial solutions to the problem have been obtained and no counterexample is known. In this paper, we study the diffeomorphism classification of toric Fano $d$-folds with $d=3,4$ or with Picard number $\ge 2d-2$. In particular, we show that those manifolds except for two toric Fano $4$-folds are diffeomorphic if their integral cohomology rings are isomorphic. The exceptional two toric Fano $4$-folds (their ID…
We show the strong cohomological rigidity of Hirzebruch surface bundles over Bott manifolds. As a corollary, we have that the strong cohomological rigidity conjecture is true for Bott manifolds of dimension $8$.
We show that the strong cohomological rigidity conjecture for Bott manifolds is true. Namely, any graded cohomology ring isomorphism between two Bott manifolds is induced by a diffeomorphism.
We investigate when two generalized real Bott manifolds of height 2 have isomorphic cohomology rings with Z/2 coefficients and also when they are diffeomorphic. It turns out that cohomology rings with Z/2 coefficients do not distinguish those manifolds up to diffeomorphism in general. This gives a counterexample to the cohomological rigidity problem for real toric manifolds posed in \cite{ka-ma08}. We also prove that generalized real Bott manifolds of height 2 are diffeomorphic if they are homotopy equivalent.
A Bott tower is an iterated $\CP ^1$-bundle over a point, where each $\CP ^1$-bundle is the projectivization of a rank $2$ decomposable complex vector bundle. For a Bott tower, the filtered cohomology is naturally defined. We show that isomorphism classes of Bott towers are distinguished by their filtered cohomology rings. We even show that any filtered cohomology ring isomorphism between two Bott towers is induced by an isomorphism of the Bott towers.
In the present paper, we characterize Fano Bott manifolds up to diffeomorphism in terms of three operations on matrix. More precisely, we prove that given two Fano Bott manifolds $X$ and $X'$, the following conditions are equivalent: (1) the upper triangular matrix associated to $X$ can be transformed into that of $X'$ by those three operations; (2) $X$ and $X'$ are diffeomorphic; (3) the integral cohomology rings of $X$ and $X'$ are isomorphic as graded rings. As a consequence, we affirmatively answer the cohomological rigidity problem for Fano Bott manifolds.
It is proved that if two quasitoric manifolds of dimension $\le 2p^2-4$ for a prime $p$ have isomorphic cohomology rings, then they have the same $p$-local stable homotopy type.
Every cohomology ring isomorphism between two non-singular complete toric varieties and quasitoric manifolds, respectively, with second Betti number $2$ is realizable by a diffeomorphism and homeomorphism, respectively.
We formulate the notion of an isomorphism of GKM graphs. We then show that two GKM graphs have isomorphic graph equivariant cohomology algebras if and only if the graphs are isomorphic.
A simple convex polytope $P$ is \emph{cohomologically rigid} if its combinatorial structure is determined by the cohomology ring of a quasitoric manifold over $P$. Not every $P$ has this property, but some important polytopes such as simplices or cubes are known to be cohomologically rigid. In this article we investigate the cohomological rigidity of polytopes and establish it for several new classes of polytopes including products of simplices. Cohomological rigidity of $P$ is related to the \emph{bigraded Betti numbers} of its \emph{Stanley--Reisner ring}, another important invariants coming…
A quasitoric manifold is a smooth manifold with a locally standard torus action for which the orbit space is identified with a simple polytope. For a class of topological spaces, the class is called strongly cohomologically rigid if any isomorphism of cohomology rings can be realized as a homeomorphism. This paper shows the strong cohomological rigidity of the class of quasitoric manifolds over $I^3$.
We prove that for a toric manifold $M$, any graded ring isomorphism $H^\ast(M) \to H^\ast(\prod_{i=1}^{m}\CP^{n_i})$ is induced by a diffeomorphism $\prod_{i=1}^m \CP^{n_i} \to M$.
By Hantzsche-Wendt manifold (for short HW-manifold) we understand any oriented closed Riemannian manifold of dimension n with a holonomy group (Z_2)^{n-1}. Two HW-manifolds M_1 and M_2 are cohomological rigid if and only if a homeomorphism between M_1 and M_2 is equivalent to an isomorphism of graded rings H^{*}(M_1,F_2) and H^{*}(M_2,F_2). We prove that HW-manifolds are cohomological rigid.
The cohomological rigidity problem for toric manifolds asks whether the cohomology ring of a toric manifold determines the topological type of the manifold. In this paper, we consider the problem with the class of one-twist Bott manifolds to get an affirmative answer to the problem. We also generalize the result to quasitoric manifolds. In doing so, we show that the twist number of a Bott manifold is well-defined and is equal to the cohomological complexity of the cohomology ring of the manifold. We also show that any cohomology Bott manifold is homeomorphic to a Bott manifold. All these resul…
We introduce the category of {\it locally $k$-standard $T$-manifolds} which includes well-known classes of manifolds such as toric and quasitoric manifolds, good contact toric manifolds and moment-angle manifolds. They are smooth manifolds with well-behaved actions of tori. We study their topological properties, such as fundamental groups and equivariant cohomology algebras. Then, we discuss when the torus equivariant cohomology algebra distinguishes them up to weakly equivariant homeomorphism.
A complex projective tower or simply a $\mathbb CP$-tower is an iterated complex projective fibrations starting from a point. In this paper we classify all 6-dimensional $\mathbb CP$-towers up to diffeomorphism, and as a consequence, we show that all such manifolds are cohomologically rigid, i.e., they are completely determined up to diffeomorphism by their cohomology rings. We also show that cohomological rigidity is not valid for 8-dimensional $\mathbb CP$-towers by classifying $\mathbb CP^1$-fibrations over $\mathbb CP^3$ up to diffeomorphism. As a corollary we show that such $\mathbb CP$-t…
A real Bott manifold is the total space of iterated RP^1 bundles starting with a point, where each RP^1 bundle is projectivization of a Whitney sum of two real line bundles. We prove that two real Bott manifolds are diffeomorphic if their cohomology rings with Z/2 coefficients are isomorphic. A real Bott manifold is a real toric manifold and admits a flat riemannian metric invariant under the natural action of an elementary abelian 2-group. We also prove that the converse is true, namely a real toric manifold which admits a flat riemannian metric invariant under the action of an elementary abe…
We study cohomological obstructions to extending group actions on the boundary $\partial M$ of a $3$-manifold to a $C^0$-action on $M$ when $\partial M$ is diffeomorphic to a torus or a sphere. In particular, we show that for a $3$-manifold $M$ with torus boundary which is not diffeomorphic to a solid torus, the torus action on the boundary does not extend to a $C^0$-action on $M$.
In this paper, based upon the basic theory for glued manifolds in M.W. Hirsch (1976) \cite[Chapter 8, §2 Gluing Manifolds Together]{h}, we give a method of constructing homeomorphisms between two small covers over simple convex polytopes. As a result we classify, up to homeomorphism, all small covers over a 3-dimensional prism $P^3(m)$ with $m\geq 3$. We introduce two invariants from colored prisms and other two invariants from ordinary cohomology rings with ${\Bbb Z}_2$-coefficients of small covers. These invariants can form a complete invariant system of homeomorphism types of all small cove…
A family of closed manifolds is called cohomologically rigid if a cohomology ring isomorphism implies a diffeomorphism for any two manifolds in the family. We establish cohomological rigidity for large families of 3-dimensional and 6-dimensional manifolds defined by 3-dimensional polytopes. We consider the class P of 3-dimensional combinatorial simple polytopes, different from a tetrahedron, whose facets do not form 3- and 4-belts. This class includes mathematical fullerenes, i.e. simple 3-polytopes with only 5-gonal and 6-gonal facets. By a theorem of Pogorelov, any polytope from P admits a r…
The long-standing Halperin--Carlsson conjecture (basically also known as the toral rank conjecture) states that the sum of all Betti numbers of a well-behaved space $X$ (with cohomology taken with coefficients in the cyclic group $\zz_p$ in characteristic $p>0$ respectively with rational coefficients for characteristic 0) is at least $2^n$ where $n$ is the rank of an $n$-torus $\zz_p \times \stackrel{(n)}...\times \zz_p$ (in characteristic $p>0$) respectively $\s^1 \times \stackrel{(n)}...\times \s^1$ (in characteristic 0) acting freely (characteristic $p>0$) respectively almost freely (charac…
If $B$ is a toric manifold and $E$ is a Whitney sum of complex line bundles over $B$, then the projectivization $P(E)$ of $E$ is again a toric manifold. Starting with $B$ as a point and repeating this construction, we obtain a sequence of complex projective bundles which we call a generalized Bott tower. We prove that if the top manifold in the tower has the same cohomology ring as a product of complex projective spaces, then every fibration in the tower is trivial so that the top manifold is diffeomorphic to the product of complex projective spaces. This gives a supporting evidence to what we…

As mentioned in the comments, the proposed construction of the canonical quadratic refinement on a mapping torus contains a gap. In addition, the claim in the appendix that the spin cobordism group vanishes in dimensions 4k+3 is incorrect, although it does vanish for the case of dimension 7, relevant for physics.
Let the compact torus $T^{n-1}$ act on a smooth compact manifold $X^{2n}$ effectively with nonempty finite set of fixed points. We pose the question: what can be said about the orbit space $X^{2n}/T^{n-1}$ if the action is cohomologically equivariantly formal (which essentially means that $H^{odd}(X^{2n};\mathbb{Z})=0$). It happens that homology of the orbit space can be arbitrary in degrees $3$ and higher. For any finite simplicial complex $L$ we construct an equivariantly formal manifold $X^{2n}$ such that $X^{2n}/T^{n-1}$ is homotopy equivalent to $Σ^3L$. The constructed manifold $X^{2n}$ i…
Given a closed manifold M, we prove the upper bound of (n+d)/2 for the length of a product of systoles that can form a curvature-free lower bound for the total volume of M, in the spirit of M. Gromov's systolic inequalities. Here n is the dimension of M, while d is the is the cohomological dimension of its fundamental group. We apply this upper bound to show that, in the case of a 4-manifold, the Lusternik--Schnirelmann category is an upper bound for such length. Furthermore we prove a systolic inequality on a manifold M with b_1(M)=2 in the presence of a nontrivial self-linking class of the t…
Quasitoric manifolds are manifolds that admit an action of the torus that is locally as the standard action of T^n on C^n. It is known that the quotients of such actions are nice manifolds with corners. We prove that such manifolds are equivariantly rigid i.e., that any other manifold that is T^n-homotopy equivalent to a quasitoric manifold, is T^n-homeomorphic to it.
This article announces joint work with Frank Connolly and Jim Davis. We generalize our classification of pseudo-free involutions on the n-torus, by studying the action of the associated infinite group with torsion in the universal cover. Included is a non-Riemannian example obtained from the restriction of the action of a Coxeter group on a CAT(0) manifold.
The rigidity theorem of Witten-Bott-Taubes-Hirzebruch tells us that, if the circle group acts on a closed almost complex (or more generally unitary) manifold whose first Chern class is divisible by a positive integer N greater than 1, then its equivariant elliptic genus of level N is rigid. Applying this to a non-singular compact toric variety, we see that its elliptic genus of level N is rigid if its first Chern class is divisible by N. But, using a vanishing theorem of Hirzebruch, we can show moreover that the genus actually vanishes. In this note we shall extend this result to torus manifol…
We present the length, a numerical cohomological index theory, of $ G $-spaces which are cohomology spheres and $ G $ is a $p$-torus or a torus group, where $p$ is a prime. As a consequence, we obtain Borsuk-Ulam and Bourgin-Yang type theorems in this context. A sharper version of the Bourgin-Yang theorem for topological manifolds is also proved. Also, we give some general results regarding the upper and lower bound for the length.
A torus manifold is an even-dimensional manifold acted on by a half-dimensional torus with non-empty fixed point set and some additional orientation data. It may be considered as a far-reaching generalisation of toric manifolds from algebraic geometry. The orbit space of a torus manifold has a rich combinatorial structure, e.g., it is a manifold with corners provided that the action is locally standard. Here we investigate relationships between the cohomological properties of torus manifolds and the combinatorics of their orbit quotients. We show that the cohomology ring of a torus manifold is…
We investigate small covers and quasitoric over the duals of neighborly simplicial polytopes with small number of vertices in dimensions $4$, $5$, $6$ and $7$. In the most of the considered cases we obtain the complete classification of small covers. The lifting conjecture in all cases is verified to be true. The problem of cohomological rigidity for small covers is also studied and we have found a whole new series of weakly cohomologically rigid simple polytopes. New examples of manifolds provide the first known examples of quasitoric manifolds in higher dimensions whose orbit polytopes have …
We prove there is only one involution (up to conjugacy) on the n-torus which acts as $-\mathrm{Id}$ on the first homology group when $n$ is of the form $4k$, is of the form $4k+1$, or is less than $4$. In all other cases we prove there are infinitely many such involutions up to conjugacy, but each of them has exactly $2^n$ fixed points and is conjugate to a smooth involution. The key technical point is that we completely compute the equivariant structure set for the corresponding crystallographic group action on $\mathbb{R}^n$ in terms of the Cappell $\mathrm{UNil}$-groups arising from its inf…
The toral rank conjecture speculates that the sum of the Betti numbers of a compact manifold admitting a free action of a torus of rank $r$ is bounded from below by $2^r$. Clearly, such an action yields a torus bundle, and, more generally, the same cohomological bound is conjectured for total spaces of suitable topological torus fibrations by Félix--Oprea--Tanré. In this article we show that this generalised toral rank conjecture cannot hold by providing various different counter-examples to it (for each rank $r\geq 5$). In particular, we show that there are sequences of smooth nilpotent fibre…
