We investigate when two generalized real Bott manifolds of height 2 have isomorphic cohomology rings with Z/2 coefficients and also when they are diffeomorphic. It turns out that cohomology rings with Z/2 coefficients do not distinguish those manifolds up to diffeomorphism in general. This gives a counterexample to the cohomological rigidity problem for real toric manifolds posed in \cite{ka-ma08}. We also prove that generalized real Bott manifolds of height 2 are diffeomorphic if they are homotopy equivalent.
We show the strong cohomological rigidity of Hirzebruch surface bundles over Bott manifolds. As a corollary, we have that the strong cohomological rigidity conjecture is true for Bott manifolds of dimension $8$.
A Bott tower is an iterated $\CP ^1$-bundle over a point, where each $\CP ^1$-bundle is the projectivization of a rank $2$ decomposable complex vector bundle. For a Bott tower, the filtered cohomology is naturally defined. We show that isomorphism classes of Bott towers are distinguished by their filtered cohomology rings. We even show that any filtered cohomology ring isomorphism between two Bott towers is induced by an isomorphism of the Bott towers.
We show that the strong cohomological rigidity conjecture for Bott manifolds is true. Namely, any graded cohomology ring isomorphism between two Bott manifolds is induced by a diffeomorphism.
In the present paper, we characterize Fano Bott manifolds up to diffeomorphism in terms of three operations on matrix. More precisely, we prove that given two Fano Bott manifolds $X$ and $X'$, the following conditions are equivalent: (1) the upper triangular matrix associated to $X$ can be transformed into that of $X'$ by those three operations; (2) $X$ and $X'$ are diffeomorphic; (3) the integral cohomology rings of $X$ and $X'$ are isomorphic as graded rings. As a consequence, we affirmatively answer the cohomological rigidity problem for Fano Bott manifolds.
It is proved that if two quasitoric manifolds of dimension $\le 2p^2-4$ for a prime $p$ have isomorphic cohomology rings, then they have the same $p$-local stable homotopy type.
Every cohomology ring isomorphism between two non-singular complete toric varieties and quasitoric manifolds, respectively, with second Betti number $2$ is realizable by a diffeomorphism and homeomorphism, respectively.
We formulate the notion of an isomorphism of GKM graphs. We then show that two GKM graphs have isomorphic graph equivariant cohomology algebras if and only if the graphs are isomorphic.
A quasitoric manifold is a smooth manifold with a locally standard torus action for which the orbit space is identified with a simple polytope. For a class of topological spaces, the class is called strongly cohomologically rigid if any isomorphism of cohomology rings can be realized as a homeomorphism. This paper shows the strong cohomological rigidity of the class of quasitoric manifolds over $I^3$.
We prove that for a toric manifold $M$, any graded ring isomorphism $H^\ast(M) \to H^\ast(\prod_{i=1}^{m}\CP^{n_i})$ is induced by a diffeomorphism $\prod_{i=1}^m \CP^{n_i} \to M$.
By Hantzsche-Wendt manifold (for short HW-manifold) we understand any oriented closed Riemannian manifold of dimension n with a holonomy group (Z_2)^{n-1}. Two HW-manifolds M_1 and M_2 are cohomological rigid if and only if a homeomorphism between M_1 and M_2 is equivalent to an isomorphism of graded rings H^{*}(M_1,F_2) and H^{*}(M_2,F_2). We prove that HW-manifolds are cohomological rigid.
A simple convex polytope $P$ is \emph{cohomologically rigid} if its combinatorial structure is determined by the cohomology ring of a quasitoric manifold over $P$. Not every $P$ has this property, but some important polytopes such as simplices or cubes are known to be cohomologically rigid. In this article we investigate the cohomological rigidity of polytopes and establish it for several new classes of polytopes including products of simplices. Cohomological rigidity of $P$ is related to the \emph{bigraded Betti numbers} of its \emph{Stanley--Reisner ring}, another important invariants coming…
The cohomological rigidity problem for toric manifolds asks whether toric manifolds are diffeomorphic (or homeomorphic) if their integral cohomology rings are isomorphic. Many affirmative partial solutions to the problem have been obtained and no counterexample is known. In this paper, we study the diffeomorphism classification of toric Fano $d$-folds with $d=3,4$ or with Picard number $\ge 2d-2$. In particular, we show that those manifolds except for two toric Fano $4$-folds are diffeomorphic if their integral cohomology rings are isomorphic. The exceptional two toric Fano $4$-folds (their ID…
The cohomological rigidity problem for toric manifolds asks whether the cohomology ring of a toric manifold determines the topological type of the manifold. In this paper, we consider the problem with the class of one-twist Bott manifolds to get an affirmative answer to the problem. We also generalize the result to quasitoric manifolds. In doing so, we show that the twist number of a Bott manifold is well-defined and is equal to the cohomological complexity of the cohomology ring of the manifold. We also show that any cohomology Bott manifold is homeomorphic to a Bott manifold. All these resul…
We introduce the category of {\it locally $k$-standard $T$-manifolds} which includes well-known classes of manifolds such as toric and quasitoric manifolds, good contact toric manifolds and moment-angle manifolds. They are smooth manifolds with well-behaved actions of tori. We study their topological properties, such as fundamental groups and equivariant cohomology algebras. Then, we discuss when the torus equivariant cohomology algebra distinguishes them up to weakly equivariant homeomorphism.
A complex projective tower or simply a $\mathbb CP$-tower is an iterated complex projective fibrations starting from a point. In this paper we classify all 6-dimensional $\mathbb CP$-towers up to diffeomorphism, and as a consequence, we show that all such manifolds are cohomologically rigid, i.e., they are completely determined up to diffeomorphism by their cohomology rings. We also show that cohomological rigidity is not valid for 8-dimensional $\mathbb CP$-towers by classifying $\mathbb CP^1$-fibrations over $\mathbb CP^3$ up to diffeomorphism. As a corollary we show that such $\mathbb CP$-t…
A real Bott manifold is the total space of iterated RP^1 bundles starting with a point, where each RP^1 bundle is projectivization of a Whitney sum of two real line bundles. We prove that two real Bott manifolds are diffeomorphic if their cohomology rings with Z/2 coefficients are isomorphic. A real Bott manifold is a real toric manifold and admits a flat riemannian metric invariant under the natural action of an elementary abelian 2-group. We also prove that the converse is true, namely a real toric manifold which admits a flat riemannian metric invariant under the action of an elementary abe…
In this paper, based upon the basic theory for glued manifolds in M.W. Hirsch (1976) \cite[Chapter 8, §2 Gluing Manifolds Together]{h}, we give a method of constructing homeomorphisms between two small covers over simple convex polytopes. As a result we classify, up to homeomorphism, all small covers over a 3-dimensional prism $P^3(m)$ with $m\geq 3$. We introduce two invariants from colored prisms and other two invariants from ordinary cohomology rings with ${\Bbb Z}_2$-coefficients of small covers. These invariants can form a complete invariant system of homeomorphism types of all small cove…
A family of closed manifolds is called cohomologically rigid if a cohomology ring isomorphism implies a diffeomorphism for any two manifolds in the family. We establish cohomological rigidity for large families of 3-dimensional and 6-dimensional manifolds defined by 3-dimensional polytopes. We consider the class P of 3-dimensional combinatorial simple polytopes, different from a tetrahedron, whose facets do not form 3- and 4-belts. This class includes mathematical fullerenes, i.e. simple 3-polytopes with only 5-gonal and 6-gonal facets. By a theorem of Pogorelov, any polytope from P admits a r…
Equivariant elliptic cohomology with complex coefficients was defined axiomatically by Ginzburg, Kapranov and Vasserot and constructed by Grojnowski. We give an invariant definition of S^1-equivariant elliptic cohomology, and use it to give an entirely cohomological proof of the rigidity theorem of Witten for the elliptic genus. We also state and prove a rigidity theorem for families of elliptic genera.
We prove that if $Γ$ is a lattice in the group of isometries of a symmetric space of non-compact type without euclidean factors, then the virtual cohomological dimension of $Γ$ equals its proper geometric dimension.
If $B$ is a toric manifold and $E$ is a Whitney sum of complex line bundles over $B$, then the projectivization $P(E)$ of $E$ is again a toric manifold. Starting with $B$ as a point and repeating this construction, we obtain a sequence of complex projective bundles which we call a generalized Bott tower. We prove that if the top manifold in the tower has the same cohomology ring as a product of complex projective spaces, then every fibration in the tower is trivial so that the top manifold is diffeomorphic to the product of complex projective spaces. This gives a supporting evidence to what we…

A real Bott manifold is the total space of an iterated $\RP ^1$-bundles over a point, where each $\RP^1$-bundle is the projectivization of a Whitney sum of two real line bundles. In this paper, we characterize real Bott manifolds which admit a symplectic form. In particular, it turns out that a real Bott manifold admits a symplectic form if and only if it is cohomologically symplectic. In this case, it admits even a Kähler structure. We also prove that any symplectic cohomology class of a real Bott manifolds can be represented by a symplectic form. Finally, we study the flux of a symplectic re…
The main goal of this article is to study the cohomology rings and their applications of moment-angle complexes associated to Gorenstein* complexes, especially, the applications in combinatorial commutative algebra and combinatorics. First, we give a topological characterization of Gorenstein* complexes in terms of Alexander duality (as an application we give a topological proof of Stanley's Theorem). Next we give some cohomological transformation formulae of $\mathcal {Z}_{K}$, which are induced by some combinatorial operations on the Gorenstein* complex $K$, such as the connected sum operati…
Toric topology assigns to each $n$-dimensional combinatorial simple convex polytope $P$ with $m$ facets an $(m+n)$-dimensional moment-angle manifold $\mathcal{Z}_P$ with an action of a compact torus $T^m$ such that $\mathcal{Z}_P/T^m$ is a convex polytope of combinatorial type $P$. A simple $n$-polytope is called $B$-rigid, if any isomorphism of graded rings $H^*(\mathcal{Z}_P,\mathbb Z)= H^*(\mathcal{Z}_Q,\mathbb Z)$ for a simple $n$-polytope $Q$ implies that $P$ and $Q$ are combinatorially equivalent. An ideal almost Pogorelov polytope is a combinatorial $3$-polytope obtained by cutting off …
Kawakubo and Uchida showed that, if a closed oriented $4k$-dimensional manifold $M$ admits a semi-free circle action such that the dimension of the fixed point set is less than $2k$, then the signature of $M$ vanishes. In this note, by using $G$-signature theorem and the rigidity of the signature operator, we generalize this result to more general circle actions. Combining the same idea with the remarkable Witten-Taubes-Bott rigidity theorem, we explore more vanishing results on spin manifolds admitting such circle actions. Our results are closely related to some earlier results of Conner-Floy…
The rigidity theorem of Witten-Bott-Taubes-Hirzebruch tells us that, if the circle group acts on a closed almost complex (or more generally unitary) manifold whose first Chern class is divisible by a positive integer N greater than 1, then its equivariant elliptic genus of level N is rigid. Applying this to a non-singular compact toric variety, we see that its elliptic genus of level N is rigid if its first Chern class is divisible by N. But, using a vanishing theorem of Hirzebruch, we can show moreover that the genus actually vanishes. In this note we shall extend this result to torus manifol…
We construct a canonical Thom isomorphism in Grojnowski's equivariant elliptic cohomology, for virtual T-oriented T-equivariant spin bundles with vanishing Borel-equivariant second Chern class, which is natural under pull-back of vector bundles and exponential under Whitney sum. It extends in the complex-analytic case the non-equivariant sigma orientation of Hopkins, Strickland, and the author. The construction relates the sigma orientation to the representation theory of loop groups and Looijenga's weighted projective space, and sheds light even on the non-equivariant case. Rigidity theorems …
