Recent advances in quantum resource theories have been driven by the fact that many quantum information protocols make use of different facets of the same physical features, e.g. entanglement, coherence, etc. Resource theories formalise the role of these important physical features in a given protocol. One question that remains open until now is: How quickly can a resource be generated or degraded? Using the toolkit of quantum speed limits we construct bounds on the minimum time required for a given resource to change by a fixed increment, which might be thought of as the power of said resource, i.e., rate of resource variation. We show that the derived bounds are tight by considering several examples. Finally, we discuss some applications of our results, which include bounds on thermodynamic power, generalised resource power, and estimating the coupling strength with the environment.
The resource theory of quantum coherence studies the off-diagonal elements of a density matrix in a distinguished basis, whereas the resource theory of purity studies all deviations from the maximally mixed state. We establish a direct connection between the two resource theories, by identifying purity as the maximal coherence which is achievable by unitary operations. The states that saturate this maximum identify a universal family of maximally coherent mixed states. These states are optimal resources under maximally incoherent operations, and thus independent of the way coherence is quantif…
The Bremermann-Bekenstein bound is a fundamental bound on the maximal rate with which information can be transmitted. However, its derivation relies on rather weak estimates and plausibility arguments, which make the application of the bound impractical in the laboratory. In this paper, we revisit the bound and extend its scope by explicitly accounting for the back action of quantum measurements and refined expressions of the quantum speed limit. Our result can be interpreted as an upper bound on the maximal rate of quantum learning, and we show that the Bremermann-Bekenstein bound follows as …
The maximal clique problem, to find the maximally sized clique in a given graph, is classically an NP-complete computational problem, which has potential applications ranging from electrical engineering, computational chemistry, bioinformatics to social networks. Here we develop a quantum algorithm to solve the maximal clique problem for any graph $G$ with $n$ vertices with quadratic speed-up over its classical counterparts, where the time and spatial complexities are reduced to, respectively, $O(\sqrt{2^{n}})$ and $O(n^{2})$. With respect to oracle-related quantum algorithms for the NP-comple…
Recent work has studied entanglement between the spin and momentum components of a single spin-1/2 particle and showed that maximal entanglement is obtained only when boosts approach the speed of light. Here we extend the boost scenario to general geometries and show that, intriguingly, maximal entanglement can be achieved with boosts less than the speed of light. Boosts approaching the speed of light may even decrease entanglement. We also provide a geometric explanation for this behavior.
We construct quantum coherence resource theories in symmetrized Fock space (QCRTF), thereby providing an information-theoretic framework that connects analyses of quantum coherence in discrete-variable (DV) and continuous variable (CV) bosonic systems. Unlike traditional quantum coherence resource theories, QCRTF can be made independent of the single-particle basis and allow to quantify coherence within and between particle number sectors. For example, QCRTF can be formulated in such a way that neither Bose-Einstein condensates nor Heisenberg-Weyl coherent states are considered as quantum many…
Three-qubit mixed states are used as a channel for controlled quantum teleportation (CQT) of single-qubit states. The connection between different channel parameters to achieve maximum controlled teleportation fidelity is investigated. We show that for a given multipartite entanglement and mixedness, a class of non-maximally entangled mixed $X$ states ($X-$NMEMS) achieves optimum controlled quantum teleportation fidelity, interestingly a class of maximally entangled mixed $X$ states ($X-$MEMS) fails to do so. This demonstrates, for a given spectrum and mixedness, that $X-$MEMS are not sufficie…
Quantum resource theories (QRTs) provide a unified theoretical framework for understanding inherent quantum-mechanical properties that serve as resources in quantum information processing, but resources motivated by physics may possess intractable mathematical structure to analyze, such as non-uniqueness of maximally resourceful states, lack of convexity, and infinite dimension. We investigate state conversion and resource measures in general QRTs under minimal assumptions to figure out universal properties of physically motivated quantum resources that may have such intractable mathematical s…
It is recognized that Grover arrived at his original quantum search algorithm inspired by his comprehension of the interference of classical waves originating from an array of antennas. It is also known that quantum-mechanical characterization of electromagnetic radiation is isomorphic to the treatment of the orientation of a spin-1/2 particle. In this paper, motivated by Grover's original intuition and starting from this mathematical equivalence, we present a quantitative link between the geometry of time-independent optimal-speed Hamiltonian evolutions on the Bloch sphere and the geometry of…
We study the one-shot distillation of general quantum resources, providing a unified quantitative description of the maximal fidelity achievable in this task, and revealing similarities shared by broad classes of resources. We establish fundamental quantitative and qualitative limitations on resource distillation applicable to all convex resource theories. We show that every convex quantum resource theory admits a meaningful notion of a pure maximally resourceful state which maximizes several monotones of operational relevance and finds use in distillation. We endow the generalized robustness …

Quantum coherence is a key element in topical research on quantum resource theories and a primary facilitator for design and implementation of quantum technologies. However, the resourcefulness of quantum coherence is severely restricted by environmental noise, which is indicated by the loss of information in a quantum system, measured in terms of its purity. In this work, we derive the limits imposed by the mixedness of a quantum system on the amount of quantum coherence that it can possess. We obtain an analytical trade-off between the two quantities that upperbound the maximum quantum coher…
Connections between the resource theories of coherence and purity (or non-uniformity) are well known for discrete-variable, finite-dimensional, quantum systems. We establish analogous results for continuous-variable systems, in particular Gaussian systems. To this end, we define the concept of maximal coherence at fixed energy, which is achievable with energy-preserving unitaries. We show that the maximal Gaussian coherence (where states and operations are required to be Gaussian) can be quantified analytically by the relative entropy. We then propose a resource theory of non-uniformity, by co…
We introduce the sudden variant (SNZ) of the Net Zero scheme realizing controlled-$Z$ (CZ) gates by baseband flux control of transmon frequency. SNZ CZ gates operate at the speed limit of transverse coupling between computational and non-computational states by maximizing intermediate leakage. The key advantage of SNZ is tuneup simplicity, owing to the regular structure of conditional phase and leakage as a function of two control parameters. We realize SNZ CZ gates in a multi-transmon processor, achieving $99.93\pm0.24\%$ fidelity and $0.10\pm0.02\%$ leakage. SNZ is compatible with scalable s…
We study the maximum speed of quantum computation and how it is affected by limitations on physical resources. We show how the resulting concepts generalize to a broader class of physical models of computation within dynamical systems and introduce a specific algebraic structure representing these speed limits. We derive a family of quantum speed limit results in resource-constrained quantum systems with pure states and a finite dimensional state space, by using a geometric method based on right invariant action functionals on $SU(N)$. We show that when the action functional is bi-invariant, t…
Entanglement between the constituents of a quantum system is an essential resource in the implementation of many quantum processes and algorithms. Indeed, universal quantum computation is possible by measuring individual qubits comprising highly entangled cluster states. In this work it is shown that the unique gapped ground state of non-interacting fermions hopping on a specially prepared lattice is equivalent to a cluster state, where the entanglement between qubits results solely by fermionic indistinguishability and antisymmetry. A deterministic strategy for universal measurement-based qua…
Quantum teleportation enables deterministic and faithful transmission of quantum states, provided a maximally entangled state is pre-shared between sender and receiver, and a one-way classical channel is available. Here, we prove that these resources are not only sufficient, but also necessary, for deterministically and faithfully sending quantum states through any fixed noisy channel of maximal rank, when a single use of the cannel is admitted. In other words, for this family of channels, there are no other protocols, based on different (and possibly cheaper) sets of resources, capable of rep…
We obtain the maximal average fidelity corresponding to the standard quantum teleportation protocol for an arbitrary isotropic distribution of input states and an arbitrary resource state. We extend this result to a family of von Neumann measurements, which includes the projections onto the computational and Bell basis, considering a Bell-diagonal resource state. We focus on three specific isotropic distributions of input states: 1) completely mixed input states, 2) states with a certain (fixed) degree of purity, and 3) quasi-pure input states. We show that the standard quantum teleportation p…
We consider the problem of teleporting superposed coherent state using non-maximally entangled coherent state as quantum channel and study the effect of entanglement over quality of teleportation. We show that if maximally entangled coherent state (MECS) used by Van Enk and Hirota [Phys. Rev. A 64, 022313 (2001)] and by H Prakash et al. [Phys. Rev. A 75, 044305 (2007)] is replaced by a particular non-maximally entangled coherent state (NMECS), average fidelity of quantum teleportation increases appreciably at small coherent amplitudes. Since it is very challenging to produce superposed coheren…
While it is known that shared quantum entanglement can offer improved solutions to a number of purely cooperative tasks for groups of remote agents, controversy remains regarding the legitimacy of quantum games in a competitive setting--in particular, whether they offer any advantage beyond what is achievable using classical resources. We construct a competitive game between four players based on the minority game where the maximal Nash-equilibrium payoff when played with the appropriate quantum resource is greater than that obtainable by classical means, assuming a local hidden variable model…
We prove a maximal velocity bound for the dynamics of Markovian open quantum systems. The dynamics are described by one-parameter semi-groups of quantum channels satisfying the von Neumann-Lindblad equation. Our result says that dynamically evolving states are contained inside a suitable light cone up to polynomial errors. We also give a bound on the slope of the light cone, i.e., the maximal propagation speed. The result implies an upper bound on the speed of propagation of local perturbations of stationary states in open quantum systems.
We investigate absolutely maximally entangled (AME) states, which are multipartite quantum states that are maximally entangled with respect to any possible bipartition. These strong entanglement properties make them a powerful resource for a variety of quantum information protocols. In this paper, we show the existence of AME states for any number of parties, given that the dimension of the involved systems is chosen appropriately. We prove the equivalence of AME states shared between an even number of parties and pure state threshold quantum secret sharing (QSS) schemes, and prove necessary a…
It has been shown [M.-Y. Ye, Y.-S. Zhang, and G.-C. Guo, Phys. Rev. A 69, 022310 (2004)] that it is possible to perform exactly faithful remote state preparation using finite classical communication and any entangled state with maximal Schmidt number. Here we give an explicit procedure for performing this remote state preparation. We show that the classical communication required for this scheme is close to optimal for remote state preparation schemes of this type. In addition we prove that it is necessary that the resource state have maximal Schmidt number.
We study the power of dephasing-covariant operations in the resource theories of coherence and entanglement. These are quantum operations whose actions commute with a projective measurement. In the resource theory of coherence, we find that any two states are asymptotically interconvertible under dephasing-covariant operations. This provides a rare example of a resource theory in which asymptotic reversibility can be attained without needing the maximal set of resource non-generating operations. When extended to the resource theory of entanglement, the resultant operations share similarities w…

The Bremermann-Bekenstein bound sets a fundamental upper limit on the rate with which information can be processed. However, the original treatment heavily relies on cosmological properties and plausibility arguments. In the present analysis, we derive equivalent statements by relying on only two fundamental results in quantum information theory and quantum dynamics -- Fannes inequality and the quantum speed limit. As main results, we obtain Bremermann-Bekenstein-type bounds for the rate of change of the von Neumann entropy in quantum systems undergoing open system dynamics, and for the rate o…
Bounds of the minimum evolution time between two distinguishable states of a system can help to assess the maximal speed of quantum computers and communication channels. We study the quantum speed limit time of a composite quantum states in the presence of nondissipative decoherence. For the initial states with maximally mixed marginals, we obtain the exactly expressions of quantum speed limit time which mainly depend on the parameters of the initial states and the decoherence channels. Furthermore, by calculating quantum speed limit time for the time-dependent states started from a class of i…
We compute the quantum maximal correlation for bipartite Gaussian states of continuous-variable systems. Quantum maximal correlation is a measure of correlation with the monotonicity and tensorization properties that can be used to study whether an arbitrary number of copies of a resource state can be locally transformed into a target state without classical communication, known as the local state transformation problem. We show that the required optimization for computing the quantum maximal correlation of Gaussian states can be restricted to local operators that are linear in terms of phase-…
Quantum states can in a sense be thought of as generalizations of classical probability distributions, but are more powerful than probability distributions when used for computation or communication. Quantum speedup therefore requires some feature of quantum states that classical probability distributions lack. One such feature is interference. We quantify interference and show that there can be no quantum speedup due to a small number of operations incapable of generating large amounts of interference (although large numbers of such operations can in fact lead to quantum speedup). Low-interfe…
Manipulation and quantification of quantum resources are fundamental problems in quantum physics. In the asymptotic limit, coherence distillation and dilution have been proposed by manipulating infinite identical copies of states. In the non-asymptotic setting, finite data-size effects emerge, and the practically relevant problem of coherence manipulation using finite resources has been left open. This letter establishes the one-shot theory of coherence dilution, which involves converting maximally coherent states into an arbitrary quantum state using maximally incoherent operations, dephasing…
We consider the physical situations where the resource theories of coherence and thermodynamics play competing roles. In particular, we study the creation of quantum coherence using unitary operations with limited thermodynamic resources. We first find the maximal coherence that can be created under unitary operations starting from a thermal state and find explicitly the unitary transformation that creates the maximal coherence. Since coherence is created by unitary operations starting from a thermal state, it requires some amount of energy. This motivates us to explore the trade-off between t…
The Lieb-Robinson bound asserts the existence of a maximal propagation speed for the quantum dynamics of lattice spin systems. Such general bounds are not available for most bosonic lattice gases due to their unbounded local interactions. Here we establish for the first time a general ballistic upper bound on macroscopic particle transport in the paradigmatic Bose-Hubbard model. The bound is the first to cover a broad class of initial states with positive density including Mott states, which resolves a longstanding open problem. It applies to Bose-Hubbard type models on any lattice with not to…
The evolution speed in projective Hilbert space is considered for Hermitian Hamiltonians and for non-Hermitian (NH) ones. Based on the Hilbert-Schmidt norm and the spectral norm of a Hamiltonian, resource-related upper bounds on the evolution speed are constructed. These bounds are valid also for NH Hamiltonians and they are illustrated for an optical NH Hamiltonian and for a non-Hermitian $\mathcal{PT}-$symmetric matrix Hamiltonian. Furthermore, the concept of quantum speed efficiency is introduced as measure of the system resources directly spent on the motion in the projective Hilbert space…
Mixed entangled states are generic resource for quantum teleportation. Optimal teleportation fidelity measures the success of quantum teleportation. The relevance of rank in the teleportation process is investigated by constructing three new maximally entangled mixed states (MEMS) of different ranks. Linear entropy, concurrence, optimal teleportation fidelity and Bell function are obtained for each of the state analytically. It is found that mixed states with higher rank are better resource for teleportation. In order to achieve a fixed value of optimal teleportation fidelity, we find that low…
Entanglement generation can be robust against noise in approaches that deliberately incorporate dissipation into the system dynamics. The presence of additional dissipation channels may, however, limit fidelity and speed of the process. Here we show how quantum optimal control techniques can be used to both speed up the entanglement generation and increase the fidelity in a realistic setup, whilst respecting typical experimental limitations. For the example of entangling two trapped ion qubits [Lin et al., Nature 504, 415 (2013)], we find an improved fidelity by simply optimizing the polarizat…
The quantum speed limit indicates the maximal evolution speed of the quantum system. In this work, we determine speed limits on the informational measures, namely the von Neumann entropy, maximal information, and coherence of quantum systems evolving under dynamical processes. These speed limits ascertain the fundamental limitations on the evolution time required by the quantum systems for the changes in their informational measures. Erasing of quantum information to reset the memory for future use is crucial for quantum computing devices. We use the speed limit on the maximal information to o…
A quantum mechanical limit on the speed of orthogonality evolution justifies the last remaining assumption in Caianiello's derivation of the maximal acceleration. The limit is perfectly compatible with the behaviour of superconductors of the first type.
The average time $T$ required for high-fidelity readout of quantum states can be significantly reduced via a real-time adaptive decision rule. An adaptive decision rule stops the readout as soon as a desired level of confidence has been achieved, as opposed to setting a fixed readout time $t_f$. The performance of the adaptive decision is characterized by the "adaptive-decision speedup," $t_f/T$. In this work, we reformulate this readout problem in terms of the first-passage time of a particle undergoing stochastic motion. This formalism allows us to theoretically establish the maximum achieva…
One central study that constitutes a major branch of quantum resource theory is the hierarchy of states. This provides a broad understanding of resourcefulness in certain tasks in terms of efficiency. Here, we investigate the maximal superposition states, i.e., golden states, of the resource theory of superposition. Golden states in the resource theory of coherence are very well established; however, it is a very challenging task for superposition due to the nonorthogonality of the basis states. We show that there are sets of inner product settings that admit a golden state in high-dimensional…
Despite intensive research, the physical origin of the speed-up offered by quantum algorithms remains mysterious. No general physical quantity, like, for instance, entanglement, can be singled out as the essential useful resource. Here we report a close connection between the trace speed and the quantum speed-up in Grover's search algorithm implemented with pure and pseudo-pure states. For a noiseless algorithm, we find a one-to-one correspondence between the quantum speed-up and the polarization of the pseudo-pure state, which can be connected to a wide class of quantum statistical speeds. Fo…

We provide a method for witnessing nonseparability of quantum processes on shared systems, which uses the channel-state duality. The method uses a maximally entangled state as a resource. We show that using the resource provides significant advantage over the corresponding protocol for nonseparability detection without the resource.
Entanglement is an indispensable quantum resource for quantum information technology. In continuous-variable quantum optics, photon subtraction can increase the entanglement between Gaussian states of light, but for mixed states the extent of this entanglement increase is poorly understood. In this work, we use an entanglement measure based the Rényi-2 entropy to prove that single-photon subtraction increases bipartite entanglement by no more than log 2. This value coincides with the maximal amount of bipartite entanglement that can be achieved with one photon. The upper bound is valid for all…
Numerical optimization is used to design linear-optical devices that implement a desired quantum gate with perfect fidelity, while maximizing the success rate. For the 2-qubit CS (or CNOT) gate, we provide numerical evidence that the maximum success rate is $S=2/27$ using two unentangled ancilla resources; interestingly, additional ancilla resources do not increase the success rate. For the 3-qubit Toffoli gate, we show that perfect fidelity is obtained with only three unentangled ancilla photons -- less than in any existing scheme -- with a maximum $S=0.00340$. This compares well with $S=(2/2…
We study quantum teleportation with the resource of non-orthogonal qubit states. We first extend the standard teleportation protocol to the case of such states. We investigate how the loss of teleportation fidelity resulting for the use of non-orthogonal states compares to a similar loss of fidelity when noisy or non-maximally entangled states as used as teleportation resource. Our analysis leads to certain interesting results on the teleportation efficiency of both pure and mixed non-orthgonal states compared to that of non-maximally entangled and mixed states.
