The $k$-parallel subdivision graph $S_k(G)$ is generated from $G$ which each edge of $G$ is replaced by $k$ parallel paths of length 2. The $2k$-parallel subdivision graph $S_{2k}(G)$ is constructed from $G$ which each edge of $G$ is replaced by $k$ parallel paths of length 3. In this paper, the normalized Laplacian spectra of $S_k(G)$ and $S_{2k}(G)$ are given. They turn out that the multiplicities of the corresponding eigenvalues are only determined by $k$. As applications, the expected hitting time, the expected commute time and any two-points resistance distance between vertices $i$ and $j$ of $S_k(G)$, the normalized Laplacian spectra of $S_k(G)$ and $S_{2k}(G)$ with $r$ iterations are given. Moreover, the multiplicative degree Kirchhoff index, Kemeny's constant and the number of spanning tress of $S_k(G)$, $S_k^r(G)$, $S_{2k}(G)$ and $S_{2k}^r(G)$ are respectively obtained. Our results have generalized the previous works in Xie et al. and Guo et al. respectively.
In this paper, we determine the two normalized Laplacian spectrum of generalized subdivision- vertex corona, subdivision-edge corona for a connected regular graph with an arbitrary reg- ular graph in terms of their normalized Laplacian eigenvalues. Moreover, applying these results, we find some non-regular normaliaed Laplacian cospectral graphs. These results generalize the existing results in [11].
In this paper we present new L-borderenergetic graphs, this is, graphs which are L-noncospectral with Kn but have the same Laplacian energy. We also present some graphs which are noncospectral to respective normalized Laplacian energy and they have the same normalized Laplacian energy.
The spectral theory of the normalized Laplacian for chemical hypergraphs is further investigated. The signless normalized Laplacian is introduced and it is shown that its spectrum for classical hypergraphs coincides with the spectrum of the normalized Laplacian for bipartite chemical hypergraphs. Furthermore, the spectra of special families of hypergraphs are established.
The eigenvalues of the normalized Laplacian of a graph provide information on its topological and structural characteristics and also on some relevant dynamical aspects, specifically in relation to random walks. In this paper we determine the spectra of the normalized Laplacian of iterated triangulations of a generic simple connected graph. As an application, we also find closed-forms for their multiplicative degree-Kirchhoff index, Kemeny's constant and number of spanning trees.
Let $G$ be a simple graph of order $N$. The normalized Laplacian Estrada index of $G$ is defined as $NEE(G)=\sum_{i=1}^Ne^{λ_i}$, where $λ_1,λ_2,\cdots,λ_N$ are the normalized Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$. In this paper, we give a tight lower bound for $NEE$ of general graphs. We also calculate $NEE$ for a class of treelike fractals, which contain some classical chemical trees as special cases. It is shown that $NEE$ scales linearly with the order of the fractal, in line with a best possible lower bound for connected bipartite graphs.
We consider the normalized Laplace operator for directed graphs with positive and negative edge weights. This generalization of the normalized Laplace operator for undirected graphs is used to characterize directed acyclic graphs. Moreover, we identify certain structural properties of the underlying graph with extremal eigenvalues of the normalized Laplace operator. We prove comparison theorems that establish a relationship between the eigenvalues of directed graphs and certain undirected graphs. This relationship is used to derive eigenvalue estimates for directed graphs. Finally we introduce…
The study and calculation of spectrum of networks can be used to describe networks structure and quantify analysis of networks performance. The fractal Möbius octagonal networks, denoted by $Q_n$, is derived from the inverse identification of the opposite lateral edges of fractal linear octagonal networks. In this paper, the normalized Laplacian spectrum of $Q_n$ is determined by two matrices $\mathcal {L}_A$ and $\mathcal {L}_S$. As an important application of our results, some topological indices (multiplicative degree-Kirchhoff index, the number of spanning trees) formulas of $Q_n$ are obta…
Given a connected graph $G$, the toughness $τ_G$ is defined as the minimum value of the ratio $|S|/ω_{G-S}$, where $S$ ranges over all vertex cut sets of $G$, and $ω_{G-S}$ is the number of connected components in the subgraph $G-S$ obtained by deleting all vertices of $S$ from $G$. In this paper, we provide a lower bound for the toughness $τ_G$ in terms of the maximum degree, minimum degree and normalized Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$. This can be viewed as a slight generalization of Brouwer's toughness conjecture, which was confirmed by Gu (2021). Furthermore, we give a characterization of th…
We show that, in the graph spectrum of the normalized graph Laplacian on trees, the eigenvalue 1 and eigenvalues near 1 are strongly related to minimum vertex covers. In particular, for the eigenvalue 1, its multiplicity is related to the size of a minimum vertex cover, and zero entries of its eigenvectors correspond to vertices in minimum vertex covers; while for eigenvalues near 1, their distance to 1 can be estimated from minimum vertex covers; and for the largest eigenvalue smaller than 1, the sign graphs of its eigenvectors take vertices in a minimum vertex cover as representatives.
The main object of this work is the top-dimensional Laplacian operator of a simplicial complex $K$. We study its spectral limiting behavior under a given non-trivial subdivision procedure $\text{div}$. It will be shown that in case $\text{div}$ satisfies a property we call inclusion-uniformity its spectrum converges to a universal limiting distribution only depending on the dimension of $K$. This class of subdivisions contains important special cases such as the edgewise subdivision $\text{esd}_r$ for $r\geq 2$ and dimension $d=2$ or the barycentric subdivision $\text{sd}$. This parallels a re…
The spectrum of the Laplacian of successive Barycentric subdivisions of a graph converges exponentially fast to a limit which only depends on the clique number of the initial graph and not on the graph itself. The proof uses an explicit linear operator mapping the clique vector of a graph to the clique vector of the Barycentric refinement. The eigenvectors of its transpose produce integral geometric invariants for which Euler characteristic is one example.
Spectral theory has widely used in complex networks and solved some practical problems. In this paper, we investigated the Laplacian and normalized Laplacian spectra of Mobius polyomino networks by using spectral theory. Let Mn denote Mobius polyomino networks (n>=3). As applications of the obtained results, the Kirchhoff index, multiplicative degree-Kirchhoff index, Kemeny's constant and spanning trees of Mn are obtained. Moreover, it is surprising to find that the multiplicative degree-Kirchhoff index of Mn is nine times as much as the Kirchhoff index.
For a simple connected graph $ G $ of order $ n $, the normalized Laplacian is a square matrix of order $ n $, defined as $\mathcal{L}(G)= D(G)^{-\frac{1}{2}}L(G)D(G)^{-\frac{1}{2}}$, where $ D(G)^{-\frac{1}{2}} $ is the diagonal matrix whose $ i$-th diagonal entry is $ \frac{1}{\sqrt{d_{i}}} $. In this article, we find the normalized Laplacian eigenvalues of the joined union of regular graphs in terms of the adjacency eigenvalues and the eigenvalues of quotient matrix associated with graph $ G $. For a finite group $\mathcal{G}$, the power graph $\mathcal{P}(\mathcal{G})$ of a group $ \mathca…
Let $G$ be a connected undirected graph with $n$, $n\ge 3$, vertices and $m$ edges. Denote by $ρ_1 \ge ρ_2 \ge \cdots > ρ_n =0$ the normalized Laplacian eigenvalues of $G$. Upper and lower bounds of $ρ_i$, $i=1,2,\ldots , n-1$, are determined in terms of $n$ and general Randi\' c index, $R_{-1}$.
In this work, we define the Laplacian and Normalized Laplacian energies of vertices in a graph, we derive some of its properties and relate them to combinatorial, spectral and geometric quantities of the graph.
Many popular graph metrics encode average properties of individual network elements. Complementing these conventional graph metrics, the eigenvalue spectrum of the normalized Laplacian describes a network's structure directly at a systems level, without referring to individual nodes or connections. In this paper, we study the spectrum and their applications of normalized Laplacian matrices of hype-cubes, a special kind of Cayley graphs. We determine explicitly all the eigenvalues and their corresponding multiplicities by a recursive method. By using the relation between normalized Laplacian sp…
In this work, we study the spectrum of the regularized normalized Laplacian for random geometric graphs (RGGs) in both the connectivity and thermodynamic regimes. We prove that the limiting eigenvalue distribution (LED) of the normalized Laplacian matrix for an RGG converges to the Dirac measure in one in the full range of the connectivity regime. In the thermodynamic regime, we propose an approximation for the LED and we provide a bound on the Levy distance between the approximation and the actual distribution. In particular, we show that the LED of the regularized normalized Laplacian matrix…
We offer a new method for proving that the maximal eigenvalue of the normalized graph Laplacian of a graph with $n$ vertices is at least $\frac{n+1}{n-1}$ provided the graph is not complete and that equality is attained if and only if the complement graph is a single edge or a complete bipartite graph with both parts of size $\frac{n-1}2$. With the same method, we also prove a new lower bound to the largest eigenvalue in terms of the minimum vertex degree, provided this is at most $\frac{n-1}{2}$.
In this note we give a simple proof of the fact that the determinant of Laplace operator in smooth metric over compact Riemann surfaces of arbitrary genus $g$ monotonously grows under the normalized Ricci flow. Together with results of Hamilton that under the action of the normalized Ricci flow the smooth metric tends asymptotically to metric of constant curvature for $g\geq 1$, this leads to a simple proof of Osgood-Phillips-Sarnak theorem stating that that within the class of smooth metrics with fixed conformal class and fixed volume the determinant of Laplace operator is maximal on metric o…
We study the symmetry properties of the spectra of normalized Laplacians on signed graphs. We find a new machinery that generates symmetric spectra for signed graphs, which includes bipartiteness of unsigned graphs as a special case. Moreover, we prove a fundamental connection between the symmetry of the spectrum and the existence of damped two-periodic solutions for the discrete-time heat equation on the graph.
For a given graph $\mathcal{G}$ of order $n$ with $m$ edges, and a real symmetric matrix associated to the graph, $M\left(\mathcal{G}\right)\in\mathbb{R}^{n\times n}$, the interlacing graph reduction problem is to find a graph $\mathcal{G}_{r}$ of order $r<n$ such that the eigenvalues of $M\left(\mathcal{G}_{r}\right)$ interlace the eigenvalues of $M\left(\mathcal{G}\right)$. Graph contractions over partitions of the vertices are widely used as a combinatorial graph reduction tool. In this study, we derive a graph reduction interlacing theorem based on subspace mappings and the minmax theory. …
We prove Cheeger inequalities for p-Laplacians on finite and infinite weighted graphs. Unlike in previous works, we do not impose boundedness of the vertex degree, nor do we restrict ourselves to the normalized Laplacian and, more generally, we do not impose any boundedness assumption on the geometry. This is achieved by a novel definition of the measure of the boundary which is using the idea of intrinsic metrics. For the non-normalized case, our bounds on the spectral gap of p-Laplacians are already significantly better for finite graphs and for infinite graphs they yield non-trivial bounds …
The work in this thesis concerns the investigation of eigenvalues of the Laplacian matrix, normalized Laplacian matrix, signless Laplacian matrix and distance signless Laplacian matrix of graphs. In Chapter 1, we present a brief introduction of spectral graph theory with some definitions. Chapter $2$ deals with the sum of $ k $ largest Laplacian eigenvalues $ S_{k}(G) $ of graph $ G $ and Brouwer's conjecture. We obtain the upper bounds for $ S_{k}(G) $ for some classes of graphs and use them to verify Brouwer's conjecture for these classes of graphs. Also, we prove Brouwer's conjecture for mo…
In this article, we develop a perturbative technique to construct families of non-isomorphic discrete graphs which are isospectral for the standard (also called normalised) Laplacian and its signless version. We use vertex contractions as a graph perturbation and spectral bracketing with auxiliary graphs which have certain eigenvalues with high multiplicity. There is no need to know explicitly the eigenvalues or eigenfunctions of the corresponding graphs. We illustrate the method by presenting several families of examples of isospectral graphs including fuzzy complete bipartite graphs and subd…
The Cheeger inequality for undirected graphs, which relates the conductance of an undirected graph and the second smallest eigenvalue of its normalized Laplacian, is a cornerstone of spectral graph theory. The Cheeger inequality has been extended to directed graphs and hypergraphs using normalized Laplacians for those, that are no longer linear but piecewise linear transformations. In this paper, we introduce the notion of a submodular transformation $F:\{0,1\}^n \to \mathbb{R}^m$, which applies $m$ submodular functions to the $n$-dimensional input vector, and then introduce the notions of its…
In this paper, we settle in the affirmative the Jakobson-Levitin-Nadirashvili-Nigam-Polterovich conjecture, stating that a certain singular metric on the Bolza surface, with area normalized, should maximize the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian.
We report our experiments in identifying large bipartite subgraphs of simple connected graphs which are based on the sign pattern of eigenvectors belonging to the extremal eigenvalues of different graph matrices: adjacency, signless Laplacian, Laplacian, and normalized Laplacian matrix. We compare the performance of these methods to a local switching algorithm based on the Erdos bound that each graph contains a bipartite subgraph with at least half of its edges. Experiments with one scale-free and three random graph models, which cover a wide range of real-world networks, show that the methods…
Cheeger's inequality states that a tightly connected subset can be extracted from a graph $G$ using an eigenvector of the normalized Laplacian associated with $G$. More specifically, we can compute a subset with conductance $O(\sqrt{ϕ_G})$, where $ϕ_G$ is the minimum conductance of a set in $G$. It has recently been shown that Cheeger's inequality can be extended to hypergraphs. However, as the normalized Laplacian of a hypergraph is no longer a matrix, we can only approximate to its eigenvectors; this causes a loss in the conductance of the obtained subset. To address this problem, we here co…
We study the $p$-independence of spectra of Laplace operators on graphs arising from regular Dirichlet forms on discrete spaces. Here, a sufficient criterion is given solely by a uniform subexponential growth condition. Moreover, under a mild assumption on the measure we show a one-sided spectral inclusion without any further assumptions. We study applications to normalized Laplacians including symmetries of the spectrum and a characterization for positivity of the Cheeger constant. Furthermore, we consider Laplacians on planar tessellations for which we relate the spectral $p$-independence to…
